High Point Market: Passion Sucks. It's All About the Money! Today in the Lounge, we have a live recording of Nick's panel "Passion Sucks. It's all about the Money!" at Universal Furniture's event room during High Point Market. Nick hosted this panel with superstars Kelli Ellis, Chad James, Steven Favreau, and Nina Magon. Also on the episode, Nick talks with Jill Erwin of Jill Erwin Interiors. Jill talks about her how she transitioned from fashion into interior design, how she runs her business and all about her killer marketing tactics. Passion Sucks. It's All About the Money! All of us in the interior design industry are passionate about interior design, but that doesn't mean all of us are successful. Passion can only take us so far, so what differentiates those that are successful, from those that are trying to become successful? Nick talks to industry-leading design firms from across the country, to learn how they've broken out of mediocre to build stand-out design firms. Learn not only how to get press coverage but also how to make REAL dollars. Panel Summary Kelli Ellis is an interior designer, licensing LLC, author, business coach and TV personality. While design is her passion, it's also her business. Nina Magon was an economics and finance major turned interior design. She was on American Dream Builders with Nate Berkus in 2013 as a semi-finalist. Nina just completed her project on 51fifteen Cuisine and Cocktails with Sax Fifth Avenue in Houston, Texas and does both residential and commercial design. Before Steven Favreau became an interior designer, he was a professional dancer and singer. Based out of Boston, Steven is opening up the Favreau's Factory, which is an 11,000 square foot think tank for himself, architects, high tech web people and photographers. It will launch January of 2018. Chad James is based out of Nashville, Tennessee but he has a plethora of clients all over the World including in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands. He originally studied Architecture at Auburn University and five years into his career he decided to start designing the interiors his buildings. His company does Architecture Consulting and 75% of their projects are residential, the rest are Commercial. Steven relays that one of the things you learn in becoming a successful designer is to always be looking for clients with large budgets. If you are able to do what you'd like without limitation, you will be better at your job and be able to show this off. For Steven, it's all about how you present yourself to clients. If he is put up against other designers for a job, he always makes the client feel comfortable that's he is the right choice because he is going to get it done right. Steven believes social media is where it's at but, networking, such as going High Point, is also important. Nina has been called the number one contemporary designer in Texas. To make her firm stand out, she has a no-nonsense policy. This policy means that they don't fool around with clients or their money and they deliver the best customer service. She only hires people who believe in her brand and who are modern and forward thinking. Four staff members out of her 12-person firm were educated in Columbia. They are able to bring new and innovative ideas to her company which help set her apart. Nina receives new clients by making all her previous clients very happy. Word of mouth goes a long way. For every project, Nina shoots to make 35%. Her firm charges $250 an hour with $20,000 minimum. Nina is involved in every aspect of the project and everyone she works with is an extension of herself. Nina prefers working on full houses and high profile projects which help get her name out there.  The first time Kelli started to feel successful in her career was when she started getting knocked off. She doesn't see this as a negative because she broadcasts so much of what she does and has a “look at me” kind of company,

Las Vegas Market Live: Dann Foley Today in The Lounge, Nick talks with Dann Foley LIVE from the Phillips Collection Showroom at Las Vegas Market. Dann talks about how interior design entered his life as a kid, about how he runs his business with a staff of three, and he gives YOU advice for a successful life and career. Getting to Know Dann Dann's favorite fashion accessory is a blazer, he wears them all the time, even while living in the desert. His favorite vacation spot is Paris, which he calls his other home. To quote Audrey Hepburn, “Paris is always a good idea.” Dann has more than one room that he wouldn't put on Instagram because he prefers his privacy... he doesn't put any interior pictures of his home up on social media. When asked beer, wine, or cocktail, Dann chooses "none" because he doesn't drink and he never has. Dann only drinks water: living in Palm Springs, where this summer the temperature reached 122 degrees, you simply can not leave the house without a bottle of water. Drinking water all the time is also really good for the skin. Dann is gone for at least part of every month, traveling about 45% of the year. His favorite place to travel for business is Vegas Market because there is always something to do. When traveling, he can't be without his shoes. Even though Dann has accomplished a lot in interior design, he believes that there are still more plateaus to climb and always more to do and learn. How Dann Started in Interior Design Dann has always had an interest in interior design. His mom loves to tell the story that when he was a kid, his parents were afraid to go out to dinner because he would always rearrange the furniture when they left the house. As a result, his parents made sure he went to design school and got his degree. Dann went to Drexel University in Philadelphia. The idea of design school there is:' if you don't have good taste, we can't teach it to you.' They show you everything you need to know in order to work as a professional in the industry. At Drexel, he went to school year-around and worked in the industry for a paid position. Dann was given an interview for this job through their placement office. He worked at the design firm while in school and when he graduated he was offered a job there, but turned it down to pursue his own business. Dann has always looked really young. When he graduated from his university he met up with some clients, the builder and the general contractor, walked into the meeting and everyone's jaws dropped. He looked too young to be the designer. His very first client was a friend of his parents whom he worked with while he was still in school to get extra credit for his degree. Dann's first client outside of school was a developer, who built resorts.  The Business Today Dann's firm is called Dann Inc., they are primarily an interior design firm, though today he would call Dann Inc. a lifestyle design business. Over the years, when you get involved in doing someone's home, clients love having the full experience. Dann Inc. delivers a very personal touch, they weren't just giving people rooms, they were giving them a whole new life. Dann has never just done a single room for a client because afterward, the client will want their entire home done, right down to their closet and the wardrobe. Dann Inc. will even plan the parties to show off the client's new home, from designing the invitations to doing the catering menus and wardrobes.  Dann launched his own product line, Dann Foley Lifestyle, about four years ago. It coincided with the NBC's premiere of American Dream Builders, hosted by Nate Berkus. Dann's first product launch was with Phillips Collection. He has a brand new collection being launched at High Point this October. His products are about people being able to take his pieces and layer them with your own pieces of art. These are collections you are supposed to play with and make your own. Dann only has three full-time staff members and ...

Today I have the great honor of welcoming on the show my friend and design guru Nate Berkus. I've wanted to interview him since launching, but he’s had quite a busy year including celebrating the 20th anniversary of his design firm, and even more excitingly, becoming a father. He and husband Jeremiah are now the proud dads to Poppy Brent Berkus. Some background on Nate: In 2002 Nate was invited to make over a small space for “The Oprah Winfrey Show," after which he became a featured design expert for the show and continued to garner national press in publications such as Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Us Weekly, People, O Magazine, Lucky and InStyle, among others. Following the debut of his branded line of home products, Nate’s first book, "Home Rules" (Hyperion) was released in 2005 and went on to become a New York Times bestseller. “The Nate Berkus Show,” a daily syndicated first-run talk show hosted by Nate, launched in September 2010 and returned for a second season in the fall of 2011. I had the privilege of being a guest expert on the show and working with Nate to help families save money. In 2011, Nate also enjoyed a new role as executive producer on the Disney and DreamWorks film “The Help.” Nate’s design firm, Nate Berkus Associates, which he founded in 1995, continues to design interiors across the country and around the world. In fall 2012 Nate brought his branded line of home goods and accessories to Target stores nationwide. In addition, he published his second book, “The Things That Matter” (Spiegel & Grau). His fabric collection, which is sold at Calico Corners, launched in January 2013. It is also available at Fabricut and launched at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores in August 2014. Nate was host, judge and executive producer of NBC’s “American Dream Builders” which aired in spring 2014.

Top designers are talking about their strategies for ‘designer diagnosis,' sleuthing out what people really want in their interior design. Designers tread a careful path when trying to find out your true interior design dreams. What we say we like, isn't necessarily what we really want in our homes. It's the designer's challenge to decipher, extrapolate, and really compare your taste, style, and day-to-day lifestyle. Being able to translate what you say, who you are, and what you do into a design that comforts, inspires, and delights you is what separates the very best designers from the rest. We are talking to three extraordinary designers on today's show about their ‘designer diagnosis' style. The ‘Latina Martha Stewart'' Vanessa DeLeon and the ‘Two Lovely Gays' pair Russell Whitehead and Jordan Cluroe.  Vanessa DeLeon may be best recognized from NBC's ‘American Dream Builders.' She also has shared her design expertise on Food Networks, Restaurant Impossible, HGTV's Generation Renovation, Designer Challenge & more. Vanessa has a signature 'Glamilistic' style that's developed into luxurious and succulent design experiences. But it all started with designing a Barbie house. And, yes, we'll be talking about the ‘50 Shades of Grey' bedroom she designed, too.  The ‘Two Lovely Gays' Russell and Jordan became sensations in Britain after participating in the The Great Interior Design Challenge on BBC Two. With an exuberance and cutting-edge style the team are making over spaces that dazzle our senses. But the real star of their clan may be their dog Buckley.
