Last week, I talked about invisible work, all of those small, well-intentioned tasks that quietly chip away at your profits. This week, I want to continue that conversation with one simple question: if you've switched to flat fees, are they actually flat enough? Because I see this all the time. Designers move away from hourly billings thinking, finally, no more time tracking, no more nickel and diming, no more surprises. But then the project ends, the designer is exhausted, the profits are thin, and they're wondering where all of their time went. And it's not that your number was wrong, it's that your flat fee wasn't flat enough. Today, I want to dive into the invisible work that's eating away at your profits. I think you know what I mean, right? They're the hours that never make it into a proposal, the tiny tasks that keep piling up, the “quick things” that somehow take all day. So if you've ever ended a project feeling like you worked twice as much as you got paid for, you probably did. I have been there many times, and I can tell you exactly where the money is slipping through the cracks. SummaryOn this Restaurant Owners Uncorked episode, Wil talks with Village Juice & Kitchen cofounders Clyde Harris and Lonnie Atkinson about building a clean-food concept that's as craveable as it is good for you. Born from Lonnie's California-shaped passion for fresh, minimally processed ingredients—and reinforced by Clyde's cancer journey—the brand grew from farmers' markets and a pop-up (first juice in 2015, first restaurant in 2016) to seven locations today: two corporate stores (Winston-Salem and the new Raleigh), one franchise (Optimist Hall, Charlotte), and four licensed university outlets (Wake Forest, Elon, USC—South Carolina, and High Point). They unpack price/value myths, menu pillars (cold-pressed juice, bowls, wraps, toasts, plant-based “Billy Cakes”), and an all-are-welcome approach to dietary needs. The growth plan is disciplined—more corporate stores across NC, selective university deals, and a push into hospitals (including a signed deal with UNC Health)—funded store-by-store to protect control and culture. Along the way: lessons in space efficiency (down to 550 sq ft), brand standards and audits, partnerships with college athletics, and the core belief that servant leadership and legendary hospitality make the operation work.10 Takeaways Mission in a line: “Food that tastes as good as it makes you feel.” Origin story matters: farmers' markets → pop-up → first shop; community pulled them forward. Seven locations, four of them campus licenses; Raleigh is the newest corporate store. Value over “cheap”: whole-food portions can out-value fast food, especially without the “juice add-on.” Menu discipline: scratch dressings, organic where it counts, gluten-free/vegan friendly, and customizable. Space mastery: proved the model in tiny footprints (550 sq ft food-hall unit) with smart line design. Athletic partnerships drive volume and credibility (pregame meals, practice smoothies). Hospitals are a natural next channel; UNC Health deal signed while they scout the on-campus spot. Grow slow, keep control: NC-first corporate expansion; fund each store with its own investor group. Culture wins: treat people exceptionally → low turnover, friendly service, consistent reviews.

As a “computer” at Harvard College Observatory, she spent countless hours examining photographic plates of stars, and in doing so discovered a relationship between the brightness and period of Cepheid variable stars. This “Leavitt Law” became the cosmic yardstick that allowed astronomers like Hubble to measure the true scale of the Milky Way and the expansion of the universe. Though she worked in relative obscurity during her lifetime, her insight remains one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology. Stop Treating High Point Like a Buying Trip. Do This Instead… High Point Market isn't just a place to shop for furniture. It's one of the most underused marketing tools you have at your disposal. Many designers make the mistake of approaching it like a giant showroom, simply hunting for products to fill their client projects. However, by doing so, they miss out on significant opportunities to grow their brand, expand their network, and establish themselves as industry experts in a way that truly sets them apart. What if you saw High Point as your personal marketing stage instead? Style Spotters do exactly that, turning tours, vendor visits, and social media coverage into a curated, client-attracting showcase of their aesthetic and expertise. By adopting this approach, you can transform every Market visit into a launchpad for building authority, forging real vendor relationships, and laying the groundwork for licensing deals or brand collaborations that elevate your business to the next level. You'll learn: ✅ How the Style Spotters program positions you as an industry authority (and how to get chosen). ✅ Ways to design tours and content that attract your dream clients, even if they're not at Market. ✅ Strategies for turning vendor relationships into collaborations and licensing deals. ✅ Tips for using social media to amplify your presence and make brands notice you. Johnny Hopper joins us in studio once again, and this time we dive into some controversy. At the post-race press conference after Round 4 at High Point, Johnny asked Aaron Plessinger a question about Eli Tomac's potential switch to KTM — a moment that sparked backlash across the industry. Some loved the question, others hated it, and we break it all down, including Steve Matthes' reaction. We also discuss whether Supercross should start a feeder series, if scoop tires should be regulated, whether Jorge Prado can figure out the Kawasaki, and how Chase Sexton might adjust to that platform if he makes the switch. The High Point Pro Motocross National was awesome! The weather that everyone feared all day finally rolled in and let loose just as the final 450-class moto got underway, and that made for some amazing racing that saw Eli Tomac score his second moto win of the season. At the same time, Jett Lawrence was forced to work through the pack after a poor start and a soft early race pace to earn his fourth overall of the series. And of course, Haiden Deegan rebounded with a vengeance after his Thunder Valley MX defeat to absolutely dominate both motos for his third win of the season. We cover itr all, and more, in this week's Kickstart Podcast.

One of the biggest inflection points for New World Pictures was when Roger Corman bought a former lumberyard and turned it into a studio to shoot BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, which jumpstarted many careers from James Cameron to this week's guest, editor Daniel Gross! Daniel may have started with New World on BATTLE, but he went on to work on New World films like TUFF TURF, SORCERESS and HIGHPOINT while also editing trailers and promotional materials for the company after Corman sold it. He also edited the New World films THE ANNIHILATORS, PRETTY SMART, and UNDER THE BOARDWALK! We discuss Daniel's long career, which also dipped into Cannon Films, worked with legendary genre directors Greydon Clark and Larry Cohen, and edited SPACED INVADERS! This interview discusses a wide range of New World films from two different eras, and Daniel is a hilarious guest with great stories so you don't want to miss this!
