THE PERSON BEHIND THE PERSON BEHIND THE CAMERA—Close your eyes and picture a classic Rolling Stone cover. Dozens probably come to mind—portraits of music legends, movie stars, political icons, cultural rebels. Bruce. Bono. Madonna. These images are etched into our cultural memory as more than mere photographs. They're statements. But when we remember the cover, and maybe even the photographer, how often do we remember the person who made it all happen? The one who dreamed up the concept, found the right photographer, navigated the logistics, managed the personalities, and ultimately brought that unforgettable image to life? It's the photo editor. But who thinks about the photo editor?Photo editors are essential—especially at a magazine like Rolling Stone—for decades its covers defined our visual culture. Behind every iconic cover is a photo director making hundreds of invisible decisions under pressure and facing tight budgets, unpredictable talent, and shifting editorial winds. They're the ones keeping shoots on track when the talent shows up two hours late. They're the ones coaxing photographers into greatness—the person behind the people behind the camera. Photo editors are expected to be tastemakers, producers, diplomats, caterers, and art directors all at once. Although their work is everywhere, their names are not. They're under-thanked. Underseen. Too often unknown. This is the paradox of their work: When a shoot goes well, it looks effortless. When it doesn't, they take the bullet.Laurie Kratochvil, Rolling Stone's visionary director of photography from 1982 to 1994, knows this all too well.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Commercial Type and Freeport Press. A recovering attorney and the founder of Going with Grace, a death doula training and end-of-life planning organization, Alua has been featured on The Doctors and in Disney's Limitless docu-series with Chris Hemsworth, as well as Vogue, InStyle, the Los Angeles Times, The Cut, The New Yorker, and the New York Times. Her TED talk entitled “Why Thinking About Death Helps You Live a Better Life,” went online in July 2023 and has already received over 1.5 million views. Alua has appeared on dozens of podcasts, and a Refinery29 video feature on Arthur and her work received ten million views across social platforms. For her clients and everyone who has been inspired by her humanity, Alua Arthur is a friend at the end of the world. As our country's leading death doula, she's spreading a transformative message: thinking about your death—whether imminent or not—will breathe wild, new potential into your life. Warm, generous, and funny AF, Alua supports and helps manage end-of-life care on many levels. The business matters, medical directives, memorial planning; but also honoring the quiet moments, when monitors are beeping and loved ones have stepped out to get some air—or maybe not shown up at all—and her clients become deeply contemplative and want to talk. Aching, unfinished business often emerges. Alua has been present for thousands of these sacred moments—when regrets, fears, secret joys, hidden affairs, and dim realities are finally said aloud. When this happens, Alua focuses her attention at the pulsing center of her clients' anguish and creates space for them, and sometimes their loved ones, to find peace. Going with Grace, Alua's work Alua's TED Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/alua_arthur_why_thinking_about_death_helps_you_live_a_better_life This has had a profound effect on Alua, who was already no stranger to death's periphery. Her family fled a murderous coup d'état in Ghana in the 1980s. She has suffered major, debilitating depressions. And her dear friend and brother-in-law died of lymphoma. Advocating for him in his final months is what led Alua to her life's calling. She knows firsthand the power of bearing witness and telling the truth about life's painful complexities, because they do not disappear when you look the other way. They wait for you. Briefly Perfectly Human is a life-changing, soul-gathering debut, by a writer whose empathy, tenderness, and wisdom shimmers on the page. Alua Arthur combines intimate storytelling with a passionate appeal for loving, courageous end-of-life care—what she calls “death embrace.” Hers is a powerful testament to getting in touch with something deeper in our lives, by embracing the fact of our own mortality. “Hold that truth in your mind,” Alua says, “and wondrous things will begin to grow around it.

When I met Keni, I knew that there was something special about her. When I heard part of her story, and listened to how impassioned she is about certain topics, I knew there was something extraordinary about her! Keni Silva is a multi-talented American model of Russian heritage, a TV personality, film investor, real estate professional, certified divorce coach, and philanthropist. A red carpet darling, she has graced numerous international events, and has also received acclaimed press for her fashion style and beauty savvy in Vanity Fair, Forbes, WWD, Vogue, Page Six, Daily Mail, InStyle, People and other notable outlets. Keni is deeply committed to philanthropy, serving on the board of the Children's Oncology Support Fund (COSF) and supporting such charitable organizations including Baby2Baby, Second Harvest Food Bank, Visionary Women, Women Cancer Research Fund and more. She is, quite obviously, a giver. This requires deep compassion. It is this compassion that has led her, in part, to write a book. Keni is also the author of Divorce As An Opportunity, a transformative guide designed to reshape the narrative surrounding divorce, and to help empower women to emerge from self-abandonment and reclaim their goddess-ness. Full Plate: Ditch diet culture, respect your body, and set boundaries.
Shira Rosenbluth, LCSW, returns to discuss what it means to live a full life in a fat body. She catches us up on eating disorder recovery (two years after her first time on the pod), coming out as queer, how her relationship with her fiance has impacted her body image, planning a wedding as a plus-size bride, and what it's felt like to witness the constant chatter of GLP-1s while recovering from a life-long eating disorder. Last time she was on the pod, we spoke about her experience with atypical anorexia and quasi- recovery. Now, two years later, we hear about how her recovery has solidified, why restriction is no longer an option for her, and what has helped her stay firm in that place -- despite the negative thoughts and noise from diet culture. Listen to hear more about: What's on Shira's plate How her recovery has been going since the last time she was on the pod Why lab values are not always a good indicator of how sick you are Realizing that restrictive behaviors no longer serve her How her relationship with her fiance has changed her view on restriction Why creating a life outside of eating disorder behaviors is just as important as stopping the behaviors themselves Why being nourished enables room for reliance in other aspects of life Her experience coming out as queer and living authentically herself That people in all sized bodies find love, and thinness is not a prerequisite for finding a loving relationship How recovery is full of ups and downs and is not always blissful Planning for a wedding in a larger body Making sure you utilize resources to support you navigating recovery The impact of Ozempic on eating disorder recovery So much more!
