(Part 2 of 2) David Akeman affectionately known as “Stringbean” was born on June 17, 1915 to a farm family in Annville, Kentucky. Anneville is a small town in Jackson County, Kentucky. Stringbean's love for music began at an early age. Before he was 8 years old, he built his first instrument out of a shoebox and thread. He most likely developed his early love for music from his father who was a successful banjo player who often played throughout the community. By the time Stringbean was 12, he bought his own banjo and then began playing at local dances and built a reputation as an excellent musician. While working construction type work building roads and planting trees, he continued playing his banjo with a goal of making it big in the music business. His career began when he entered a contest being judged by singer-guitarist-musical saw player Asa Martin. After impressing Martin, he soon joined Martin's band.During a performance, Martin had forgotten David Akeman's name. So he just introduced Akeman as “String Beans” The nickname was given to him based on his tall lanky frame. Apparently, the name stuck and David Akeman would become known simply as String Bean. Not only did Stringbean become known for his musical abilities, he also became known for being a funny guy. Stringbean became known as a comedian musician. He also broadcast on WLAP out of Lexington, Kentucky, and played with different groups during the late 1930s. Strange enough, old country music back in the 30s didn't include much banjo playing. However, Stringbean was able to keep banjo playing relevant in country music.Interesting enough, Stringbean was also a decent semi pro baseball player. His baseball playing skills became known to Bill Monroe, who had his own semi pro club. Monroe was so impressed with Stringbean that he added Stringbean to his band. He played in Monroe's band from 1943 until 1945.After Stringbean left Monroe in 1945, he was replaced by another popular banjo player named Earl Scruggs, who had a different sound than Stringbean. Stringbean would also go on marry his sweetheart Estelle Stanfill in 1945. The following year he would begin working with another banjo player named Louis Marshall Jones, affectionately known as Grandpa Jones. The two men would both be together doing comedy in the television program Hee Haw. Grandpa Jones was a WWII veteran and would become Stringbean's closest friend. The men also became neighbors in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.Akeman was one of the Opry's top stars throughout the 1950s. Oddly enough, he didn't begin recording on his own until the early '60s, when he signed to the Starday label. He had hits with "Chewing Gum" and "I Wonder Where Wanda Went," and recorded seven albums between 1961 and 1972.His first album was titled Old Time Pickin' and Grinnin' with Stringbean which was released in 1961. His music was considered folk stories with a taste of comedy. At the time, Stringbean and his buddy Grandpa Jones became the two biggest old time banjo players of their era.In 1969, a country style comedy would come to television. The program would be called Hee Haw and was on television from 1969 to 1993. The program lasted for 26 seasons and recorded 655 episodes. Any popular country musician who was anybody appeared on the show.Unfortunately, Stringbean and his wife Estelle would be tragically murdered on November 10, 1973. After the couple returned home from a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, they walked in on a robbery by two men. Stringbean was shot to death in front of his fireplace and his wife Estelle was shot to death outside their home while trying to flee the robbers. It would be Grandpa Jones who would find the bodies of his beloved friends the next day. Grandpa Jones had plans to pick Stringbean up the next day for a a planned hunting trip. Grandpa Jones would learn the sad truth when he pulled up to his friend's cabin at 2308 Baker Road near Ridgetop, Tennessee. According to author Taylor Hagood, Stringbean and Estelle didn't believe in using banks. Both were alive during the Great Depression when many people who had money in their banks lost it all.Stringbean was known to keep thousands of dollars in cash laying around his house. Grandpa warned him many times to not keep his money in the house. He told Stringbean that one day, keeping that cash around the house would get him killed. When Grandpa found the bodies of his murdered friends, he knew the day he worried about had finally come. The murders shocked Nashville residents. Author Taylor Hagood would write a book about Strinbean's life and death. For his book about Stringbean, Hagood interviewed one of the lead investigators in the case, surviving members of Stringbean's family and fellow musicians who knew Stringbean personally. He then compiled his findings into the book titled Stringbean: The Life and Murder of a Country Legend. If you enjoy reading. Gabe and Brett recap the weekend in college football. Asa Martin joins the show at the bottom of the hour to talk about the loss against East Carolina, bounced back after back-to-back losses and his road to Memphis.
In Episode 7 of Tigers on Tap, TJ and Trey preview the Tigers' week one matchup against Mississippi State. The Tigers are heading to Starkville to play a team that has revenge on their mind after last year's hard fought 31-29 loss to the Tigers at the Liberty Bowl. In the first segment, Trey and TJ discuss the two-deep depth charts that were announced by both teams. TJ discusses which players on the depth chart he was most surprised to see on the Tigers' depth chart. They were both expecting to see Asa Martin in the second position in the running back slot, but Northern Illinois transfer, Jeyvon Ducker, filled that place. Silverfield and Co has expressed throughout the offseason that they were looking for a consistent threat at the running back position, instead of resorting to a running back by committee. Clearly, Jeyvon has recovered from an offseason injury and has learned the playbook to a point that the coaches feel comfortable having him get a lot of touches throughout the game. They also discuss Iowa State transfer, Joseph Scates, and the role he will fill for the Tigers at the wide receiver position. They see Joseph as a deep threat to spread out the field for Seth Henigan. They transition to discuss redshirt freshman, Makylan Pounders, starting at right tackle on the offensive line. Both guys believe that Silverfield and Cramsey are investing into their future with Makylan, who will have four years of eligibility coming into this year. Trey and TJ discuss the overall age of the depth chart. Ryan Silverfield has mentioned 42% of his starters will be freshman and sophomores. But Trey and TJ believe that their age does not negate the level of experience the Tigers will have on the field. Mississippi State brings a veteran-laden team to the field on Saturday. Their team is littered with 5th-year seniors and transfers. The guys believe this will be a major part of the storyline for this game. The Tigers' youth versus Mississippi State's experience. Rain is in the forecast for the game on Saturday. The guys discuss how that will impact both Mississippi State and Memphis. Mississippi State is a pass-oriented offense and if the game is sloppy then Memphis can grind out the Mississippi State defense. The guys focus in on the offensive and defensive lines for Memphis and Mississippi State as the matchups they are looking at the most. Mississippi State has an extremely athletic and physical defensive line, and the Tigers' offensive line will have to keep them away from Seth in the backfield. Emmanuel Forbes, an all-SEC cornerback for the Bulldogs, will more than likely be matched up against Eddie Lewis, so they expect the Tigers to stay away from his side of the field. In the second segment, Trey and TJ talk about both teams' offense. The Bulldogs and Tigers are in the same boat with their receivers. Both teams have lost their major playmakers in Makai Polk and Calvin Austin III. Which receivers will step up and prove themselves worthy of being the go to guy for their respective team's offense. Both offensive lines have had major shifts in positions. LIke the Tigers, Mississippi State has linemen that have switched positions from where they played last year. Both TJ and Trey are interested in seeing how the offensive lines will be able to protect their respective quarterbacks. Both teams look to have revamped their special teams this year. Mississippi State fans experienced the same woes in the kicking game that the Tigers felt last year. Chris Howard, a transfer from Florida, assumes the field goal kicking role for the Tigers while Massimo Biscardi will have the honors for Mississippi State. To end the episode, Trey and TJ give their predictions on the final result of the game with projected scores. About Tigers on Tap Tigers on Tap is a podcast for fans by fans. Welcome back to Tigers on Tap Episode 6: Kick Off the Season Part 2. In this episode, Trey and TJ give their full breakdown of the 2-deep depth chart from their point of view. There are a few positions that are pretty set in stone, such as the quarterback position with Seth Henigan and Ryan Glover as the 1 and 2, but there are also many positions where the starters are not yet named. Specifically, in the running back, wide receiver, and offensive line rooms. Trey and TJ both think that redshirt sophomore, Brandon Thomas, will get the nod as the starter against Mississippi State with Asa Martin as his backup. In their opinion Brandon Thomas offers the Tigers the full running back skill set and, if he can remain healthy, will be the overall best running back the Tigers can put out on the field. Both TJ and Trey believe that true freshman running back, Sutton Smith, will get quite a bit of touches in the backfield this year based on the glowing reviews from head coach Ryan Silverfield and offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey. The wide receiver's room is up in the air. Losing Calvin Austin III and Sean Dykes has placed a spotlight on the receivers' room as to who will be the player that will step up and fill the shoes left behind by Austin. Trey and TJ both believe that Eddie Lewis and Javon Ivory will be the wideouts that will start, but there is a plethora of guys that can step in for them when they need a break. The guys believe Markcayll Jones, Roc Taylor, Joseph Scates, and Kobe Drake will fill in admirably. To end the first segment, they break down the offensive line depth chart, along with the defense and special teams. In the second segment, Trey and TJ go game by game through the schedule and predict a win/loss record for the 2022 Tiger team. Listen in as they both go in great detail on why the Tigers will win or lose each game. To sum up their projected records, Trey has the Tigers going 9-3 on the year and 6-2 in the AAC. TJ has the Tigers going 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the AAC. About Tigers on Tap Tigers on Tap is a podcast for fans by fans. Senior running back, Asa Martin, joined GoTigers247 in this latest episode of Off the Boards. Asa was a highly ranked recruit out of the state of Alabama in 2018 where he initially signed to play for the Auburn Tigers. After a quick stop in Miami, Asa joined the Tigers in 2019. Asa discussed his journey from a star recruit in high school to a member of the running back room in Memphis. He describes the journey as hard and not what he expected it to be. He believes the journey has been hard because of outside distractions but also because of decisions he made in his youth. He shares that the reason he came to Memphis was because of the success of Tony Pollard and Kenneth Gainwell prior to his arrival. Asa shared how he was impressed with the level of talent coming out of Memphis that was playing substantial minutes in the NFL and he wanted to join "Running Back U." Asa went into great detail on how his play at Memphis has not met the expectations he has for himself, and describes how he has worked during the offseason to grow mentally and physically in order to play at the level he knows he should be playing at. Asa credits his family for teaching him how to let perceived slights go, and teaching him how to grind and commit to becoming the person he knows he should be. In a gut-wrenching moment, Asa shares how the loss of his little brother, Awysum Harris, has impacted him. Even though he is still emotionally working through this tragic loss in his family, he describes the motivation that playing for his brother has provided for him coming into this make or break year. In the second segment, Asa speaks extremely highly of the running back room and the depth that the running backs add to the offense. He shares how the running backs consistently compete against each other, but in a way that helps them instead of trying to one up each other. Asa thinks that the running backs are going to be highly depended on this year for the Tigers' offense success. He shares how he believes that his skill set is designed to be effective in the hybrid role popularized by Kenneth Gainwell and Tony Pollard. To end the show, Kenny and Asa discuss how football has changed over the years and how the game is transitioning to exploit matchup advantages instead of lining up and exerting power. In this episode of Off the Boards, lead writer and host Christian Fowler is joined by GT247 founder Brooks Hansen and GT247 digital content producer Kenny Stubblefield to discuss Kenny Gainwell's decision to opt out of the 2020-2021 season. In his redshirt freshman season, Gainwell piled up 2,069 scrimmage yards and 16 total touchdowns. Throughout the year, Gainwell proved that he was arguably the best dual threat back in the country, and he was named a second team All-American by the Associated Press last week. During the episode, the crew discusses the news and which players will now have to step up with Gainwell gone. Rodrigues Clark, Asa Martin and Kylan Watkins are among the players that will have an expanded role this season. Memphis' season opener against Arkansas State is less than a week away, which will give the staff little time to figure out what they are going to do in the backfield. Fortunately for Memphis, Clark has been a major standout since fall practice started. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
