In Episode 7 of Tigers on Tap, TJ and Trey preview the Tigers' week one matchup against Mississippi State. The Tigers are heading to Starkville to play a team that has revenge on their mind after last year's hard fought 31-29 loss to the Tigers at the Liberty Bowl. In the first segment, Trey and TJ discuss the two-deep depth charts that were announced by both teams. TJ discusses which players on the depth chart he was most surprised to see on the Tigers' depth chart. They were both expecting to see Asa Martin in the second position in the running back slot, but Northern Illinois transfer, Jeyvon Ducker, filled that place. Silverfield and Co has expressed throughout the offseason that they were looking for a consistent threat at the running back position, instead of resorting to a running back by committee. Clearly, Jeyvon has recovered from an offseason injury and has learned the playbook to a point that the coaches feel comfortable having him get a lot of touches throughout the game. They also discuss Iowa State transfer, Joseph Scates, and the role he will fill for the Tigers at the wide receiver position. They see Joseph as a deep threat to spread out the field for Seth Henigan. They transition to discuss redshirt freshman, Makylan Pounders, starting at right tackle on the offensive line. Both guys believe that Silverfield and Cramsey are investing into their future with Makylan, who will have four years of eligibility coming into this year. Trey and TJ discuss the overall age of the depth chart. Ryan Silverfield has mentioned 42% of his starters will be freshman and sophomores. But Trey and TJ believe that their age does not negate the level of experience the Tigers will have on the field. Mississippi State brings a veteran-laden team to the field on Saturday. Their team is littered with 5th-year seniors and transfers. The guys believe this will be a major part of the storyline for this game. The Tigers' youth versus Mississippi State's experience. Rain is in the forecast for the game on Saturday. The guys discuss how that will impact both Mississippi State and Memphis. Mississippi State is a pass-oriented offense and if the game is sloppy then Memphis can grind out the Mississippi State defense. The guys focus in on the offensive and defensive lines for Memphis and Mississippi State as the matchups they are looking at the most. Mississippi State has an extremely athletic and physical defensive line, and the Tigers' offensive line will have to keep them away from Seth in the backfield. Emmanuel Forbes, an all-SEC cornerback for the Bulldogs, will more than likely be matched up against Eddie Lewis, so they expect the Tigers to stay away from his side of the field. In the second segment, Trey and TJ talk about both teams' offense. The Bulldogs and Tigers are in the same boat with their receivers. Both teams have lost their major playmakers in Makai Polk and Calvin Austin III. Which receivers will step up and prove themselves worthy of being the go to guy for their respective team's offense. Both offensive lines have had major shifts in positions. LIke the Tigers, Mississippi State has linemen that have switched positions from where they played last year. Both TJ and Trey are interested in seeing how the offensive lines will be able to protect their respective quarterbacks. Both teams look to have revamped their special teams this year. Mississippi State fans experienced the same woes in the kicking game that the Tigers felt last year. Chris Howard, a transfer from Florida, assumes the field goal kicking role for the Tigers while Massimo Biscardi will have the honors for Mississippi State. To end the episode, Trey and TJ give their predictions on the final result of the game with projected scores. About Tigers on Tap Tigers on Tap is a podcast for fans by fans. Trey Lasley and TJ Willis are lifelong Memphis fans and share their perspective of the happenings in Tiger athletics from a fan perspective. [We celebrate eminent North-of-the-border sportswriter Ed Willes' selection to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame's media wing last week - with a June 2018 archive re-release of one our most popular episodes!] As Johnny Manziel's pro football comeback journey wraps up a promising pre-season with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, we take a moment this week to reminisce on the approaching 25th anniversary of the CFL's bold, but ultimately ill-fated attempt to bring its exciting brand of pigskin south of the border in 1993. When the NFL put the brakes on its two-year World League of American Football experiment in the summer of 1992 (which included a franchise in Montreal, dubbed the “Machine”), an economically wobbly CFL sensed an opportunity to fill the gap in US markets newly comfortable with the notion of pro football, as well as a potential growth path for the tradition-rich Canadian game to expand outside the Provinces.  In fact, two WLAF owners, Fred Anderson (Sacramento Surge) and Larry Benson (San Antonio Riders) "crossed over" to the Canadian League and were awarded newly rechristened franchises for 1993 – Anderson's Sacramento Gold Miners and Benson's San Antonio Texans.  While the Gold Miners were the only ones to make it into the following season's expanded CFL schedule (Benson literally – and ominously – left the league at the altar by bowing out the day of the league's press conference announcing the expansion), the door was open to a wild three-season adventure that brought the wide-open Canadian game to far-flung American outposts in Baltimore, Las Vegas, Shreveport, Memphis, Birmingham, and, ironically (via eventual relocation from Sacramento), San Antonio. Longtime Vancouver Province sportswriter Ed Willes (End Zones and Border Wars: The Era of American Expansion in the CFL) joins the podcast to discuss the league's short-lived American expansion effort, which then-commissioner Larry Smith had hoped to eventually encompass ten US teams in a fully expanded 20-team league.   Among the misadventures, Willes recounts: the 1995 champion Baltimore Stallions (who operated as the nickname-less “CFLers” the previous season in a trademark dispute with the NFL over the “Colts” moniker); the woefully attended Las Vegas Posse (who practiced on the Strip in the Riviera Hotel's parking lot and were forced to play their last “home” game in Edmonton); the Memphis Mad Dogs' unique approach to fitting the longer/wider CFL field into the Liberty Bowl; why football-mad Birmingham couldn't draw flies for Barracuda games once college and high school seasons started; and the “Great Tucker Caper” – featuring the infamous brothers Glieberman and their attempt to steal away the Shreveport Pirates to the greener pastures of Norfolk, VA.

Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Jacob Likes joins us in the latest episode of Off the Boards. Jacob is a native Memphian who played high school ball at Christian Brothers High School before committing and ultimately enrolling at the University of Memphis in 2019. Last year he started and played in 11 games at center for the first time in his career. Jacob talks about the importance of the offensive line and how, under the leadership of OL coach Jim Bridge, they have adopted a "5 fingers/1 fist" mentality where all the linemen learn and master all 5 positions on the offensive line. Jacob described the continuity and trust that was built in the offensive line from last year and how there play made it easier for the Tigers to introduce two freshmen, Seth Henigan and Brandon Thomas, into skill positions. The 2021 offensive line was anchored by Dylan Parham, and Jacob goes into detail about his experience playing with a lineman like Dylan who was the rock of that group. Jacob shared the message that the veteran players at Memphis relay to the incoming freshman and young guys on the team. He understands how most young players come in to college and believe that the transition will be easy for them, but he explains how every players has a "Welcome to Memphis" moment where they are introduced to college football at its highest level. Because all the veteran players have experienced that "Welcome to Memphis" moment they are ready to help the young guys dig in and grind and grow into the player that they were recruited to be. His call to action to those players is that they need to put their head down, follow directions and get better before they can expect to see the field in a productive role. In the second segment, Jacob talks about his recruitment while he was at CBHS. He describes how he felt pressure from some at CBHS to hold out for SEC offers, but decided to join the Tigers because of the relationship he built with Ryan Silverfield. He describes a desire that he had to not waste the time of any school that was recruiting him, and because his relationship with the staff at Memphis was so good, he made the decision to commit early on. He shares how much he enjoys playing at the Liberty Bowl since he grew up watching the Tigers as a kid. Houston Cougar football, much to the delight of those of us who consider themselves fans of the Cougars' gridiron squad, returned to action last Saturday vs Memphis. Less to the delight of Cougar fans has to be the combination of a sluggish start and heartbreaking field goal that thwarted what looked like an inspired comeback at the Liberty Bowl. We dive into what happened last Saturday and look ahead to what's left in the 2020 football season. We also took a look at the early National Signing Day and what we think of the Cougar football's latest crop of signed recruits in this 2021 class. AND THAT'S NOT ALL, we talk the return of Cougar men's basketball after a COVID-19 pause and re-capping an inspired Cougar women's basketball win while missing their top scorer.
