now there's a live dog. Did you watch Goodfellas back in 1990 and think “Hey, this should be a wacky comedy with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin”? If so, you're in luck. You're in so much luck.Like Goodfellas, My Blue Heaven is loosely based on the story of Henry Hill, the mobster who went into the witness protection program. Goodfellas ends with a vision of Hill standing in front of an dull suburban tract home, haunted and disappointed, an anonymous schnook. My Blue Heaven starts at that very moment, as Steve Martin's smooth criminal slides into suburbia like a streak of mercury. There, restless and bored, he meets his case handler, a buttoned-down bureaucrat played by Rick Moranis. From that point on the film becomes a perverse buddy comedy, as Martin teaches Moranis to loosen his buttons a bit, and Moranis teaches Martin… well, nothing really. But he writes an extremely entertaining book! Listen to Adam and Aidan talk about sartorial tips and merengue lessons below, or find us on your podmaker of choice.

Deremy Dove and Thomas Sena (Pop Culture Five Podcast) help me start one of several Martin Scorsese themed movie discussions these next few months with a double feature discussion about GOODFELLAS and its parody follow-up MY BLUE HEAVEN. TALKING POINTS INCLUDE: *How Henry Hill is an outsider, Goodfellas' iconic helicopter pursuit shot & how both films depict various Italian demographics *How the film prays on everyone's secret wants and needs *Is Goodfellas to date the only exception to the opening narration trope where it (mostly) works? *the influence on HBO's The Sopranos & mostly competent cable TV edits of Goodfellas prepared for primetime by Scorsese himself(!) *And what's the single best gag in My Blue Heaven? The band does a lot of time traveling at its rehearsals. In those two hours each week, the guys might start with a rock classic like “Hey Baby,” as they do in this track from last week's get-together.Then in the next moment The Flood Time Machine Lab might transport the lads back to, say, the Roarin' Twenties. There they can sample a song or two of the day, maybe “Dinah” or “Lady Be Good” or “My Blue Heaven.”Then switching gears again, they swoop down into the Thirties or the Forties to toy with tunes from the greats like Hoagy Carmichael (“Georgia on My Mind,” maybe) or Fats Waller (“Honeysuckle Rose”) or Duke Ellington (“Don't Get Around Much Any More”).Then it's back to the Sixties or the Seventies for a bit of Bob Dylan, John Prine or Tom Paxton, Jackson Browne or Neal Young. It's all about rocking the room. This Week's SongThe featured tune this week demonstrates the best part of all that temporal tramping, because it so often lets the guys revisit music of their youth. As reported earlier, “Hey Baby” was a 1961 chart-topper that 17-year-old Bruce Channel wrote with his friend Margaret Cobb. Over the past six decades, the song has brought joy to audiences ranging from the fledgling Beatles when they were starting out back in Liverpool to movie goers years later who packed theaters for films like Dirty Dancing. For more of the song's long history, click here. The Flood started revisiting “Hey Baby” a few years ago when the band was invited to perform it at a very special occasion: the wedding of Floodster Emerita Michelle Hoge; she and Rich Hoge married on May 21, 2022, and The Flood was there for the festivities. Since then, “Hey Baby” has lingered in the repertoire, as you'll hear in this track that started last week's rehearsal at the Bowen House.Want to Do Your Own Time Traveling? If you'd like ride shotgun in The Flood time machine, a new department in the newsletter helps you take your own dash through the decades.Called “Flood Tunes on the Timeline,” the page sorts dozens of the band's performances by the date of the songs' composition. Here's how to use it.Suppose you're in the mood for a little sumpin sumpin from the period that folksinger Dave Van Ronk once wryly called “The Great Folk Scare.” You could visit the tune timeline by clicking here, then scrolling down to “The Sixties” section, where you'll find songs grouped by individual years. For instance, Dylan's “Don't Think Twice, It's All Right” is tucked in under 1962. There's Bob Gibson's “Abilene” in the 1963 list. Paxton's “Ramblin' Boy” comes along in 1964, Eric Andersen's “Dusty Boxcar Wall” is in 1965, and Michael Peter Smith's “The Dutchman” shows up in 1968.Each listed song on the timeline is hyperlinked, so clicking its title takes you to a recent Flood performance. Each entry also has a little (or a lot) of the history of that particular song. The timeline indexes more than a century of music and is regularly updated as new songs and stories are added. Enjoy the ride! This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com
For the month of November, we're throwing a four-episode Friendsgiving celebration and inviting friends old and new to talk about some of their favorite films! We start with welcoming returning guest Frank Bonanno to discuss the Steve Martin/Rick Moranis mob movie My Blue Heaven, a de facto comedic sequel to Goodfellas (which came out a few weeks later). Writer Nora Ephron was married to Henry Hill biographer Nicholas Pileggi during the writing of Wiseguy and took real stories of Hill's time in witness protection as inspiration for her screenplay. We talk about the Goodfellas connections, the crazy casting process that at one point had Arnold Schwarzenegger playing mobster Vinnie Antonelli, Joan Cusack's excellent work as prosecutor Hannah Stubbs - who holds her own toe to toe with Martin's Antonelli and Moranis's Barney Coopersmith, the difficulties of finding good Italian food in certain parts of the country, and the idea of a heaven populated by mobsters in witness protection. Let's hit the dance floor and do the merengue--don't forget to overtip your server!

Chatter is everywhere when the band gathers each week for rehearsal at the Bowen House. News, gossip, jokes. But the best conversations usually don't involve words at all.The Flood Zone — like most tight-knit groups of friends — has developed its own language. It is a shorthand in which a grin and a nod could mean, “Wow — great solo. Cool new stuff!” while a shrug and a chuckle could tell everyone, “Oops — sorry about that, guys. Coulda sworn I knew what key we're in!”But beyond gestures and facial expressions, the nouns and verbs of this wordless patter are notes and chords, rhythms and rests. This track from last week's practice session is a perfect example.Anatomy of a GrooveRegularly proclaiming rehearsal as the best night of the week, Charlie Bowen usually tries to help things along with his choice of the opening warmup tune of the evening. His selection this time was a jaunty old jazz standard.Immediately, Danny Cox responds. Listen closely and you might hear the grins sailing around the room as his band mates enjoy the guitarist's finding cool new twists in the nooks and crannies of the old familiar tune.Jack Nuckols is the first to pick up on it, and right away he answers with innovations of his own, accents with his snare and high-hat cymbals that give the song a fresh shuffle.Meanwhile, Randy Hamilton, whose solid bass line is the reliably rich and warm current under all the Flood repertoire, replies with a wink and nod — uh-huh — when asked if he'd that like a turn at the solos. The infectious joy of this frolic in the Floodisphere is summed up in Bowen's laughing out loud at himself when he grandly muffs the lyrics at one turn in the tune. The point of it all is that, as in the spoken world, the best musical conversationalists are those who also know how to listen.About the SongThe vehicle for this outing is Walter Donaldson's jazz classic “My Blue Heaven,” which was introduced to the world by Eddie Cantor in the Ziegfeld Follies back in 1927, a year before it was a hit for crooner Gene Austin who sold a whopping five million copies of his rendition. For the story behind this fascinating old tune, see our earlier Flood Watch report by clicking here.More from This Year? Finally, if you'd like to hear more of the musical conversations emanating from the Bowen House nowadays, check the 2024 edition of the Radio Floodango free music streaming service. Who is the hardest person to believe and trust? My guest today is Tim Stearns. I am guessing his name isn't jumping out to you? Oh wait, wasn't he in that movie "My Blue Heaven" that great 1990 film? Fun fact he was. Sort of...Tim is here to read his letter to Bob his Step-Father that became so much more. Having an earthly father provides invaluable guidance, support, and love, serving as a foundational pillar in one's life. A father shapes a child's understanding of strength, compassion, and responsibility, helping to navigate the complexities of the world. Equally vital, however, is the relationship with our Heavenly Father. Knowing God and putting faith and trust in Jesus Christ is paramount, as He offers the ultimate salvation from sin. Jesus' sacrifice and teachings provide a path to eternal life, peace, and a profound sense of purpose. Embracing this divine relationship enriches our lives, offering hope and an unshakeable foundation that transcends earthly challenges. Join me as I walk in Tim's shoes.

What a day for a podcast, huh? This week, Andrea asked Jodie to watch one of her favorite movies, Nora Ephron's technically-kind-of sequel to Goodfellas, 1990's My Blue Heaven. It stars Steve Martin as mafia-informant Vinnie Antonelli, and Rick Moranis as Barney Coopersmith, the FBI agent tasked with watching over him in witness protection, and it is a capital-R Romp. We talk about the real life informant who inspired both Goodfellas and My Blue Heaven, why the real antagonist in this movie is small town cops, and the subversive masculinity of Steve Martin.Next week, we're watching a favorite movie of both Jodie's dad and the great Weird Al Yankovic, Top Secret! It features Val Kilmer in his debut role as a rock and roll singer who becomes involved in a secret plot to rescue a scientist imprisoned in East Germany. You can watch it a few different places.Referenced in this episode:"The Campy Masculinity of Steve Martin" - plazmaburn"'My Blue Heaven,' Steve Martin's Comedic, Spiritual Sequel to 'Goodfellas'" - Jake RossenLast week, Jodie and I mentioned the found footage movie that preceded The Blair Witch Project and, more importantly, takes place in New Jersey, The Last Broadcast. The Watchers are back in the woods this week for the last installment of our Movies That Are Thematically Appropriate to Watch in the Month of October series, and against her horror-averse judgment, Jodie picked what has become a classic in the world of found footage horror, 1999s The Blair Witch Project. She and Andrea talk about how this movie was a direct product of its time, the influence of reality TV and early horror novels on the found footage genre, the lasting effect Blair Witch had on its stars, and so much more. For a movie neither of us found particularly scary, we have a lot to share with you about this one.For next week, Jodie demanded some levity in Andrea's pick, so she chose a favorite movie from her childhood, My Blue Heaven. If you've never seen it, all you need to know is that Steve Martin plays a mobster named Vinnie Antonelli who goes into witness protection, and Rick Moranis plays the FBI agent assigned to watch over him, and HIS name is Barney Coopersmith.
