My prayer had turned into what I used to call on Hee Haw, Lulu's never-ending shopping list. You remember that old sketch, just going on and on, asking for this and that, never stopping to be grateful. And there I was, doing the exact same thing. Ask, ask, ask. Want, want, want.It got me thinking. If you sit down and try to count the things you do not have, that list is practically infinite. You don't have a mansion. You don't have a yacht. You don't have perfect health, a pain-free back, or enough hours in the day. You could spend every waking moment focused on what's missing, and you'd never reach the bottom of that list. Never.But here's where it gets interesting, and I think this is what Paul was getting at in First Timothy. What if you flipped the equation? What if, instead of the things I lack being greater than the things I have, you reversed those mathematical signs? What if everything God has already placed in my hands, this breath, this day, this family, this salvation, what if I let that become greater than everything I'm still reaching for?That's not settling. That's not giving up. That's actually the most radical act of faith you can perform.There was a missionary in the early 1900s named Frank Laubach who became famous for his literacy work around the world. But before all of that, he was a struggling, overlooked man on a hillside in the Philippines, feeling forgotten and passed by. One morning he sat on a hill and made a decision to spend every waking moment conscious of God's presence and God's provision, right where he was, with exactly what he had. He wrote in his journal that the moment he stopped cataloging what he lacked and started resting in what God had already given, something broke open inside him. Out of that surrender came a literacy movement that eventually taught over sixty million people to read. All of it born from one man learning the math of contentment.I'm too soon old and too late smart on this one, friend. I've spent far too many mornings rattling off my prayer list like I'm placing an order, when what God really wanted was for me to sit down and just say thank you.Godliness with contentment is great gain. Not godliness plus getting everything you asked for. Godliness, plus the quiet trust that what He's already given you is exactly enough for exactly right now. That is the gain. That is the freedom.So tonight, before you close your eyes, try something different. Instead of the shopping list, just start counting what you already have.Let's pray: Father, forgive me for all the asking and so little thanking. You have been so good to me, and I have looked right past it reaching for more. Tonight I want to say thank You, for exactly where I am and exactly what I have, because it came from Your hand. Charlie McCoy has an incredible musical CV to look back on. His relationship with Bob Dylan began when he was asked, at rather short notice, to join the session for “Desolation Row”. He went on to assemble the core band when Dylan decamped to Nashville to record his masterpiece “Blonde On Blonde”. He went on to play on “John Wesley Harding” and “Nashville Skyline” too.   Add to that, the many sessions he did for Elvis Presley, the work with Johnny Cash, and countless other sessions, you have a musical legacy few can match.   For 19 years he was music director for the Nashville TV show “Hee Haw”, and in 2022 he became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.   At age 85 he shows little sign of slowing down, and I was delighted he agreed to join me for the show.   Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

This week, radio & television legend and Country Music Hall of Fame member Grandpa Jones with his wife, Grand Old Opry star Ramona and family recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews and a live performance from the Jones Family. Aubrey Atwater presents “The Mother of Folk Music” Jean Ritchie, and Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original, Jim Bullard. Grandpa Jones was a performer during the golden age of radio, and later found success as a cast member on the syndicated television program, “Hee Haw.”  After years of living near Nashville, TN, Grandpa moved to Mountain View, Arkansas in the early 1980's. Along with his wife Ramona, they ran the Grandpa Jones Dinner Theater. The theater employed many musicians, many of whom are still around the Ozarks today including their son Mark and guitarist Danny Dozier. We'll dig deep into the archives this week for a set of music, featuring some of Grandpa's finest performances at Ozark Folk Center State Park. “The Jones Family Band” features a cast of all-star musicians, including Alisa and Mark Jones. This performance from the Jones Family Band was the last one recorded at the Ozark Folk Center State Park before Ramona passed in late 2015. Renowned folk musician Aubrey Atwater profiles influential folk music icons Jean Ritchie and the Ritchie Family, as well as explores the traditional Appalachian music and dance that the Ritchie Family helped to perpetuate into the modern American folk lexicon. This episode focuses on Jean Ritchie as a songwriter, and features Jean's performance of her original song “Black Water.” Mark Jones' “From the Vault” segment features a rare recording of Ozark original Jim Bullard, performing the traditional song “Glory Land,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives.

Improvement isn't fun nor is it instant. How does one move the inertia of the heard? The field of donkeys with their heads in the sand lost in a haze of Netflix, porn, gossip, endless gaming, is seen from above as just rows of ignorant un-moving a******s. But they will kick you if you disturb them.When poison is made to taste like honey the fool will fight to keep it. The alcoholic clings to his destroyer like a baby bottle. The scroller feels naked without their phone. Take away the constant virtual reality and drugs and most people are bored with who they are for they are no one and are unsatisfied with real relationships for they made none. So back to the noise they will go, cursing anyone who interrupts them.Self deceivers will always hate the one that tells them the truth, for truth violently destroys falsehoods they have attached their identities to. A lie injures the intelligent. The truth hurts the confident but wrong.As Socrates said, “It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows. The mind once sealed by arrogance becomes deaf to truth and blind to growth. Knowledge doesn't enter a cup that believes itself full. It spills. It is wasted. But the current evils, sweat shop labor, exploitation, Jewish supremacy: challenging these things comes at a cost. Are you good or do you just wish to appear good?The less talent they have the more pride vanity and arrogance they have. All these fools however find other fools to applaud them. The ignorant always find comfort in the echo of their own stupidity. They praise one another not out of admiration, but out of fear, fear of seeing their own emptiness reflected in silence. Pride is their refuge, vanity their creed, and arrogance their mask. Wise need no applause, for truth is its own reward. Yet the fool blind to his ignorance mistakes noise for wisdom and flattery for honor. And so the world rewards appearances of substance, illusion over intellect. It is a strange comedy. Those who know least shout loudest. Those who know most must whisper to be heard.Noise and attention seeking make more money than telling the truth or tackling social ills. When Hee Haw first debuted in 1969 many saw it as a cornpone knockoff of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In and while the show did indeed trade in cornpone comedy it also carved out it's own niche, running in syndication until 1993. Hosted by country music Hall of Famers Buck Owens and Roy Clark, the show mixed regular features with bits involving special guests -- usually another top country musician. For much of urban America Hee Haw served as a gateway to country music and the show retains a devoted following through DVD releases and streaming. FilmIn the mid-1970s, a unique country song about truckers, CB radios, and the open road captured the imagination of America. It was called "Convoy," and it not only topped the charts but also inspired a Hollywood movie, solidifying its place in pop culture history. As any farmer can tell you, if you want to harvest a crop, you've got to get out of the office and go to work in the field.Why can't the Democratic Party grasp this basic reality when it comes to producing votes? This year was going to be different. Pressed by progressive rural activists, national party leaders agreed to open a network of get-out-the-vote offices in rural areas of battleground states. SPOILER ALERT: Kamala Harris won fewer votes there than Biden harvested four years earlier.What happened? Very little. And too late. Opening a campaign office is hardly the same as being there for the long haul, building trust and nurturing local support. Harris was behind from the start, though, since Joe Biden's Democratic Party operation had not bothered to hire any rural staffers or even prepare an agenda. Apparently, their idea of a good rural program was Hee-Haw.The Harris campaign did put out a plan, but in September – just two months before the vote! Also, they had too many “rural strategists” and too few ground-level organizers at campaign headquarters. Those organizers did their best, but were mostly disregarded by campaign consultants. For example, a good list of rural surrogates was recruited, but never used. Worse, Harris herself was absent – she was never scheduled to visit a farm, or even pay a culturally-symbolic visit to a state fair.This is Jim Hightower saying… The Democrats' real problem is not any one campaign, but more than a decade of policy and political abandonment of rural communities. Do the “smart” political honchos in Washington think that people out here don't notice the party's absence and disregard for them? For decades, country music has had a close and special relationship to the U.S. military. In his new book, Cold War Country, historian Joseph Thompson shows how the leaders of Nashville's Music Row found ways to sell their listeners on military service, at the same time they sold country music to people in uniform.Shane Harris spoke with Thompson about how, as he puts it, Nashville and the Pentagon “created the sound of American patriotism.” Thompson's story spans decades and is filled with famous singers like Roy Acuff, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, and Lee Greenwood. Collectively, Thompson says, these artists helped to forge the close bonds between their genre and the military, but also helped to transform ideas of race, partisanship, and influenced the idea of what it means to be an American.
