Brachycephalic Breed Bans in Europe - Can It Happen in the US?

Brachycephalic Breed Bans in Europe - Can It Happen in the US? In January 2022, Norway approved a legal ban on breeding Bulldogs and Cavaliers, citing animal welfare violations. A similar ban and breeding restrictions has growing support from UK and other European veterinary organizations. Could the US be next to ban brachycephalic breeds? Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT weigh the pros and cons of brachycephalic breed bans - and whether American dog lovers and veterinary professionals would support such mandates and regulations in this week's episode. Beckie shares the recent Norwegian court ruling and how this could affect other countries, including the US. Dr. Ward cites several studies that validate increased health risks of brachycephalics and how this impacts their welfare. Viewfinders, this is a very tough topic for both our hosts and you may feel some of the same personal conflict! It's a good discussion! Dr. Ward challenges us to view the issue both from the pet parents' perspective of increased cost, care, and medical conditions associated with these breeds, but also from the pet's welfare: how it feels to struggle to breathe, walk, or play. Both hosts agree we need to do a better job encouraging more responsible breeding, promote cross-breeding of these at-risk breeds, and educate the public about the health - and welfare - risks associated with brachycephalic. Both stop far short of breed bans, but believe we can improve the overall health and wellbeing of brachycephalics by being more proactive on this issue. Viewfinders, what do you think about this issue? How can we inspire conversations in both the veterinary profession and breeders? Why aren't more veterinary professionals talking about this issue! Now's your chance! In this episode, we have some very special guests. The owners of @monte.thepit join us on the show to share their experiences and insight on owning an American Pitbull Terrier in Ontario. Ontario has implemented "Breed Specific Legislation" towards American Pitbull Terriers and Staffordshire Breeds. This has created a large community in the province fighting against the breed ban.

Three brutal attacks on elderly couples near Vancouver by pit bulls sparks breed ban demands while in Montreal the SPCA got an injunction to stop a breed ban and the Province of Ontario has one in place. Many American cities and entire European countries have passed breed bans against pit bulls and sometimes other breeds too like Rottweilers, but do they work? Are pit bulls that different from other dogs? They are over represented in fatal bite statistics but is that stat relevant to the mutt you might meet at the dog park who looks like a pit bull? Deborah asks Stan these questions and points out that she's experienced other breeds that more dangerous and met many pit bulls and pit bull crosses who are lovely. Dr. Stanley Coren explains the truth about pit bulls, Staffies, Rotties, Cane Corsos, Dogo Argentinos, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Jack Russels, behind the stats and stories and gives you solid advice for you and your kids on how to avoid being a bite victim. Is your dog kinda strange? Does he or she do something odd or weird? If you have any ‘why' type questions about the behavior of your dog please send them to me and I'll ask Dr. Stanley Coren your questions next time we are on-air in January. Questions or Comments? Get the show notes at: http://myrescuerocks.net/40  It’s October, and that means it’s also Pit Bull awareness month, so we’re mixing it up a little bit! Instead of our regularly scheduled Q&U episodes, I thought it would be great to bring a couple of experts onto the show to talk about some of the issues that are near and dear to my heart.  If you’re new to this show you might not know that my soul mutt is a short-haired, stocky girl with droopy jowls and a block for a head. Her head might be big, but it’s tiny when you compare it to her heart. Ever since we adopted her I’ve been rudely awakened to the stereotypes that surround dogs that look like her, and some other breeds of dogs that have been classified as quote on quote dangerous. If you’ve ever struggled to find a place to live or an insurance company that would cover you because of your dog’s appearance or breed, this episode is going to give you resources and tactics that’ll help. There are even a few tips here that are gold for ALL dog parents… so even if you’ve never dealt with breed discrimination, I hope you’ll still listen, learn, and help to spread awareness about this issue. I met today’s expert on Instagram, someone tagged her on an old Q&U question when I asked the rescue community what steps we could take to get rid of breed specific discrimination. That particular episode had already been recorded, but she had a ton of info on the topic, specifically on finding housing. At the time, my housing crisis was still fresh in my mind. My boyfriend and I had struggled for nearly a year to find a place that would accept our whole family, and that deal almost fell through because of the Pit Bull stereotype… I knew I wasn’t alone, and I knew this topic deserved it’s own show, and so here we are today! Today’s expert is not only the Executive Director of My Pit Bull is Family, she’s also a burlesque dancer, a grad student, and, of course, a proud rescue momma… I’m so excited to share with you my conversation with Shannon Glenn. To access links to resources and see some photos submitted by our expert, please visit http://myrescuerocks.net/40 Please help us spread our rescue stories by sharing this show with a friend, PAWlease, I’d really appreciate it!  You can also help out by subscribing, and leaving a rating and review on either iTunes or Stitcher. Thanks so much for your support!
