What to listen for:Robin Greubel and Crystal Wing return with the brilliant Katylynn Sloan for part two of their conversation on the intersection between chemistry and K9 detection!“Train with as much variety as often as you can, in the weirdest of circumstances you can possibly get to, with as many groups and as many people as you can.”Katylynn dives into one of the most misunderstood topics in the detection world: training aids. She breaks down why the term “pseudo” is falling out of favor, replaced by “alternative training aids,” and classifies them into four types: dilution, absorption, mimic, and vigilance. Each has its pros and pitfalls. Mimics, for instance, rely on human interpretation of what's important for a dog to smell—sometimes right, sometimes not. And vigilance aids? They're about maintaining search behavior, not the odor itself.Katylynn also emphasizes the importance of language. As a member of standards boards like ASB and OSAC, she helps shape definitions so handlers, trainers, and scientists are all speaking the same language in courtrooms and classrooms alike. It's not just about what you know, but how clearly you can explain it. Her advice to aspiring canine scientists? Master problem-solving, communication, and the humility to say, “I don't know.”She also touches on the challenges of HRD training, the evolving definitions of “real” odor, and how even “duh” science needs to be written down. Her message to handlers? Train broadly. Generalization is key. Get variety in odors, people, places, and aids—because you never know what the real world will throw at your dog.Dogs are really good. But they're even better when guided by thoughtful, curious humans willing to adapt, collaborate, and learn. Katylynn's passion isn't just informative—it's contagious.Key Topics:Revising Standards and Defining "Real" Odor (0:59)Introduction to Alternative Training Aids (03:27)Mimics and Human Interpretation in Training Aids (07:30)Applying Dilution/Absorption Concepts to HRD (15:14)Public Comment Process and Impact on Standards (17:18)Skills and Traits for Aspiring K9 Scientists (22:53)Final Takeaways: Variety, Generalization, and Collaboration (39:52)Resources:The manipulation of odor availability of training aids used in detection canine trainingAAFS Academy Standards BoardLindsay Waldrop's LabWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Fromt he Claremont PD, Officer DJ O'Sullivan is here as we talk about the canine program in Claremont, having 2 dogs in rotation, what it takes to be a dog handler, the training involved, what his dog's specialty is, what happens after a K9 retires, and more.
Primordial Fight comes from within not from the illusion. Whats the illusion? Possession....... This niche community have lost the way to the "Sport Dog" concept, they use bite suits and equipment for fun, not for protection. This "Specialized Being" we call a Working K9 has been diluted by Possesssion. Intellect is taking over Intelligence.. Then breeding is causing generational trauma that get amplified thru epigenetics (subconscious impulses) triggered by the environment handed out to LE, Military / Home Owners where they don't perform properly in a neutral state. This episode I go over Love and Fear emotions in a K9 and how possession is an addiction that is causing Conflict, in the dogs and the handlers. Primordial Fight is a way of life for both handler and the K9. This is a topic that is lacking Intelligence in this niche community.
This month's episode of Public Safety Thursday with Captain Warren Gosnell from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office featured an in-depth conversation about their K9 Unit. Captain Gosnell shared with host Janet Michael about the vital role these specialized officers and their canine partners play in public safety. He addresses the complex responsibilities and essential duties performed by the K9 unit. The discussion centered around the nuanced roles these canines play—from tracking and trailing to detecting illegal substances. Captain Gosnell elaborated on the types of dogs in the unit, mentioning Enzo the Dutch Shepherd, Milo the German Shepherd, and Blue the Bloodhound, among others. He emphasized the specialized training these dogs undergo and the ongoing commitment required from their handlers. For instance, Captain Gosnell shared an experience from a recent training exercise where a dog tracked a hidden handler across different terrains—grass, pavement, and more—demonstrating their impressive olfactory abilities. Training sessions are rigorous and continuous to ensure the dogs remain at the top of their game, especially when tasked with real-world emergencies. Janet and Goz joshed about the intricacies of their own pet care routines, drawing a parallel to the intense training and responsibility shouldered by K9 handlers. The hosts also discussed the emotional bonds that form between the handlers and their dogs, making it understandable why most handlers choose to adopt their partners upon the dogs' retirement. Captain Gosnell explained the master deputy ranking system and how these specially-trained deputies have accumulated years of experience and mastery in their field. Five of the six deputies in the unit have earned this prestigious title, highlighting their dedication and expertise. As the show wrapped up, Janet and Goz encouraged listeners to consider adopting or rescuing pets. Captain Gosnell lifted the mood by acknowledging the various officers and their respective canine partners, offering a heartfelt salute to their invaluable service to the community. The broadcast was a fascinating peek into the world of K9 units, their training, and the unyielding commitment of both the officers and their dogs to public safety. If you weren't already a fan of these four-legged heroes, today's enlightening discussion surely gave you paws for thought.

Here comes the heat! Turned on the AC in the house yesterday and it's a nice 64° inside. Thankfully, it's going to cool off tomorrow with some showers & thunderstorms expected in the area. In the news this morning, multiple injuries in a "targeted attack" in Colorado, RIP to Loretta Swit, an update on some of the road construction happening in the La Crosse area, a UTV crashed into a K9 squad car, and the Bloomer Brewing Company closed it's doors over the weekend. In sports, the Brewers have won 7 in a row…including a weekend sweep of the Phillies, the Pacers beat the Knicks on Saturday to advance to the NBA finals, the Stanley Cup final begins on Wednesday, Ryan Blaney won in Nashville last night, the Rockies set new record for futility in MLB, and Zion Williamson has been accused of rape & abuse by an ex-girlfriend. Elsewhere in sports, Scott Hanson will be back on RedZone this year, John Brenkus from ESPN's "Sports Science" has died, and the world of boxing has new "sex testing" policies. Talked about what's on TV today and some of the trailers that came out this weekend, including "Happy Gilmore 2" and the new "Frankenstein" film. Plus, the schedule for the final season of "Stranger Things". Very cool story about a recent high school grad who had to work his shift at Burger King right after his graduation ceremony, and another great story about a toddler that was rescued by police after it got onto the luggage belt at an airport. Today is "National Leave Work Early Day", so we looked at some popular excuses for cutting out of work early…and we also discussed a list of things that happened a decade ago. Some food stuff this morning, including jalapenos in your wine, a caviar & cocktail combo that costs $33,000, Starbucks looking for influencers to fly around the world, Did you catch Peyton Manning playing golf this weekend with Scottie Scheffler? Needless to say, it didn't go well for the former Colts QB. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a naked flight attendant, a bunch of bees that escaped from a semi-truck, a woman who was stealing items from graves in cemeteries, a woman who woke up to a stranger sucking on her toes in Sacramento, and a snake that bit a dude's wiener when he was trying to take a piss. Send us a textWe truly enjoyed interviewing Tony. There will likely be a second episode. After listening to this one we know you'll see why we need to have him on again. Lots of subjects were covered in a slightly longer episode than normal. Tony Pallotta started training dogs in 1993, with over 25 years of experience thus far, his knowledge and experience has made him a leader within his industry. Like most it is not uncommon he started out in obedience training and found within him the passion and desire to learn, absorb and to become more competent and proficient within. It was with that mindset and goal he began to study and train in the sport of Schutzhund. Once he became proficient in Schutzhund as a successful handler and decoy. He realized early on that he felt there were some key components missing that caused him to raise some questions about what was being achieved and what was being taught to believe in. Subsequently he continued on with his desire to study and research and he began to prepare dogs for protection sports. This tested the handler's skills as well as the dog's skills to work in un-patterned programs. This is known as a real street type application in personal protection for both K9 and Handler. This experience allowed the furthering of comprehension and knowledge base by competing in protection venues such as, K9 Pro Sport's, Sundog Protection Pro Series and Iron dog.His desire to understand and specialize within the field took him to Italy. While in Italy working with Renzo Zolli and his community of training partners reaching into Austria and abroad, there a re-affirmation of skill set and advancement occurred. The realization that there was so much more to learn he continued on his travels to study disciplines and to further acquire a knowledge of skills and excellence, it was then that he landed in the Netherlands and began working with Erik Huft in the KNPV program. This was an unanticipated, eye opening experience for Tony and a catapult into a whole new style of training in the world of working dogs. At that time little was known about the Royal Dutch Police Dog Association Program outside of the Netherlands. Many of the world's Elite Military and police K9's have come from this program and it was with great honor for Tony to have been given the opportunity to work and study with such high caliber trainer's.https://workingk9.ca/workingk9-trainer.htmlWe are pleased to announce that Vested Interest in K9's has become our newest sponsor. Today we are sitting with one of our East coast brothers in retired Braintree Massachusetts PD and founder of the KITT Foundation, Billy Cushing. Billy was a 17-year veteran of the Braintree Police Department where he served as a patrol K9 Handler for 10 of those years. He is a two-time recipient of the Geroge Hannah Award for Valor among other honors. In this episode Billy tells the story of his K9 partner, Kitt, and the bond and partnership they shared. On June 4th, 2021 Billy, Kitt, and backup officers responded to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex on McCusker Drive, in which the suspect fled to a wooded area. Billy and Kitt began their trek to locate the suspect when they were ambushed by the suspect, who was hiding. Kitt, upon locating the suspect, advanced into the hail of gunfire. Kitt was struck by 3 fatal bullets and Billy was hit 5 times and Officer Donoghue was hit once during this gunfight. The suspect was eliminated during this gunbattle. Billy was critically injured during this incident but recovered to start a new mission and journey to honor his hero partner Kitt. In the wake of Kitts death Billy organized a Foundation, named the KITT Foundation, that would connect members of the public interested in providing support to K9 Teams across the country. Dallas Police K9 Handler, Scott Jay sat in as a cohost. HTTPS://K9KITTFOUNDATION.COM

t's been10 days since siblings Lily and Jack Sullivan were reported missing by their mother in rural Canada, with no sightings of the two.The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have scoured through dense forest with 160 trained volunteers alongside drones and K9 units, before announcing mid-week that they would "scale back" search efforts, The Guardian reported. After days of searching around Pictou County where Jack, 4, and Lily, 6, were last seen at home, Sergeant Robert McCamon said confidence was dropping in finding the siblings. What happened to these two children? In this powerful episode of The MisFitNation, host Rich LaMonica sits down with Ben Vernon, a U.S. Air Force veteran whose journey from military K9 handler to successful dog training entrepreneur is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and passion. Ben's story begins with zero prior experience with dogs before the Air Force assigned him to be a canine handler. Through his military training, he developed a deep understanding of K9 behavior, training techniques, and security operations. His skills led him to an elite Secret Service mission, providing security for President Trump in 2020. Inspired by conversations with Secret Service K9 handlers, Ben pursued an opportunity with them—only to have the door close at the last minute. Instead of letting that setback define him, Ben pivoted to dog training as a career, realizing it was both profitable and deeply fulfilling. Taking a leap of faith, he and his wife relocated to Tampa, Florida, ranked as one of the most dog-friendly cities in the U.S., to turn his passion into a full-time business.

Mike Ritland served as a United States Navy SEAL for 12 years. During his service, he navigated the training ground and battlefield within the special operations community. While on deployment in Iraq with a group of Marines and their combat K9, this highly trained combat dog saved the Marines' lives during a dangerous operation, making the K9 a true hero. And just like that, a light switch went off for Mike. Using the knowledge gained as a SEAL and his growing experience with the most elite dogs in the world, he left the military in 2008 to start his own dog company, Trikos International. Trikos' reputation, forged from Mike's career as a SEAL, grew rapidly. The company was awarded government contracts with DHS, DOD, TSA, and Customs & Border Protection. Circa 2010, Mike Ritland and Trikos International accepted the contract as the training group for the West Coast SEAL Canine Program and reunited Mike with his former teammates. Trikos became a highly reputable dog training & procurement company that specialized in providing working K9s to a multitude of clients to include celebrities, private individuals, and government agencies. Mike's career brought him full circle while working on the West Coast. He discovered that former high-level working dogs were being euthanized when they could no longer serve. Most of these dogs were psychologically compromised from chaotic and traumatic experiences that occurred while “doing the job.” After years of service in some of the worst places on earth, they were physically broken down, causing many to default to aggression. Mike saw this as another opportunity to make an impact, so he started the Warrior Dog Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to prevent euthanization and provide care & dignity to retired working dogs who have served in any capacity. Some dogs are rehabbed or rehomed, if possible. For others, the goal is to make them comfortable while bringing them back to health. Since 2010, the foundation has cared for over 200 dogs who were all scheduled for euthanization. Training and rehabbing the finest working dogs on the globe provided empirical data for what all breeds require mentally, physically, and emotionally. The methods and proper canine nutrition required to care for these warriors further expanded Mike's experience, thus revolutionizing his methods. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. On November 11, 2016, Boise Police Sergeant Kevin Holtry's life changed forever. What began as a tactical search for a dangerous fugitive in a quiet Boise neighborhood turned into a brutal ambush that would leave Holtry shot multiple times, paralyzed from the waist down, and ultimately result in the amputation of his left leg. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The suspect, a violent parolee wanted for multiple shootings and a carjacking, had been released early from prison. After eluding officers in a stolen vehicle, he was believed to be hiding somewhere in a residential area. Sergeant Holtry, a member of the Boise Police Department's Special Operations Unit, joined the search along with fellow Sergeant Chris Davis. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms “He knew the risk,” said a department spokesperson. “But Kevin always put others before himself. That's the kind of officer he was.” As the team cleared backyards, Holtry took the lead position, a role both he and Davis understood carried the highest danger. As they entered one yard, the fugitive, armed and crouched behind trash receptacles, opened fire. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Newsbreak and Blogspot. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. Holtry was shot five times in the attack. One bullet instantly paralyzed him. Davis was also shot but survived. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect on scene. The team's K9 partner, Jardo, sustained fatal injuries in the firefight. “I was hit immediately,” Holtry later recalled in a podcast interview. “I couldn't move. I knew it was bad. I couldn't feel anything.” The attack marked a turning point in Holtry's life. After more than 16 surgeries, he remained paralyzed and lost his left leg. Despite the devastating injuries, Holtry continued to serve the Boise Police Department for several more years, becoming a symbol of resilience, service, and courage. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. In recognition of his heroism and continued dedication, Holtry was awarded the Medal of Honor, one of the department's highest honors. His journey has since become a beacon of inspiration in the law enforcement community and beyond. “Kevin exemplifies what it means to serve with honor,” said a Boise PD official. “He never gave up, not in the fight, not during recovery, and not when it came to helping others heal.” Holtry's story is featured on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast available as a free podcast on their website, available on Apple, Spotify, and most major platforms. In his episode, he shares raw details about the ambush, the intense physical and emotional recovery, and how he found purpose againthis time, through mentoring, sports, and public speaking. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. Outside of uniform, Holtry discovered a new way to find that same adrenaline rush through adaptive athletics. With support from the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), he competed in the 2019 San Diego Triathlon Challenge and participated in Nordic skiing, sledge hockey, and other sports that brought him joy and healing. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. “Sports saved me,” Holtry said. “Being active again gave me back a part of myself I thought was lost.” Holtry, who served three years in the U.S. Army and spent more than 20 years in law enforcement, mostly with Boise Police, had once left a career path in education to become an officer. Though he had a degree in English literature and a potential future in the classroom, he chose the streets instead. Check out the show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. “I wanted to serve,” he told a citizen's academy class, according to a Boise PD Facebook post. “That's what I was meant to do.” Even after his injuries, that service never stopped. Holtry continued to teach self-defense classes, mentor young officers, and speak to the community about the realities and rewards of police work. His story has been shared widely on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and in local and national news. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. “Just someone saying, ‘We appreciate your effort' that means the world,” Holtry said in one interview. “I'm a public servant. That's what we do. If you don't find a high in that, you're not human.” Despite the physical challenges, including bullet fragments still lodged in his body and a steel rod holding his right leg together, Holtry never allowed bitterness to take root. “I don't hate what happened,” he said. “It gave me a second chance to impact lives differently.” Today, with the help of a GRIT Freedom Chair provided through a grant from CAF Idaho, Holtry explores Idaho's outdoors, still healing, still teaching, still inspiring. His message is one of resilience, purpose, and pushing through the unimaginable.
