That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership
We have the amazing privilege to have Chris Marohn on this episode where he shares a valuable story from early in his career to remind us to surround ourselves with smart people who are willing to disagree with us. Chris illustrates the value of meeting people where they are while taking the time to communicate to people that they are important and that their voices are heard. He advocates for mental health awareness and reminds us that there is a lot of work trauma in many of our past experiences. He shares that we aren't the person that can reach everyone, but we can show them enough love to get them moving in a positive direction. We don't have to do things the way they have always been done and we need to work harder to recognize our own implicit biases. Many don't want to face or even overcome their biases because it would force them to change or leave their comfort zone. We can lead others even those we don't have authority over by showing interest in them and by asking for their sincere help because people want to feel needed and connected and that is why we need to take the time to get to know them and pay attention to the members on our teams so we can help offer them right opportunities to grow at the most opportune time. Chris started his career in politics. He was encouraged by all those around him to get involved and make the changes he wanted to see in the world. During his high school and undergraduate years, he worked with various political and policy organizations to help farmworkers in the Sacramento Valley. He continued his passion for elimination of bias and anti-racism during his time working at various levels of political campaigning and government. He has served in posts from Washington DC to local city government in the pursuit of equity under the law. Currently, Chris is working with The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law as the Director of Employer Relations in the Office of Career and Employment Services. Previously, he was the Director of the Continuing Legal Education program at ASU Law. In his current role, Chris, is responsible for Diversity Summer Clerkship hiring and advising. He meets with students of diverse backgrounds encouraging and mentoring them into achieving their legal career goals, while trying to diversify the legal profession. Chris has recently been tasked with overseeing the pipeline to law school program with Phoenix Unified School District, with the focus of helping underserved communities get the tools needed to be successful in law school. Chris graduated in 2012 from Monterey College of Law in Monterey, California. During this time we worked full time, campaigned for members of congress and local office, was president of the Student Bar Association and local chapter of Delta Theta Phi. Chris and his wife, Megan, have been married for ten years and are passionate about advocacy in ending Breed Specific Legislation, as they have a loving American Staffordshire Terrier, and coaching Special Olympics Baseball. Animal Attorney, Kristina Bergsten, interviews Quinn Pigott with Replace Denver BSL. Breed-Specific Legislation discriminates against false, stereotypically-aggressive dog breeds such as pitbulls, german shepherds, and more. Replace Denver BSL wants a breed-neutral safety law that will improve public safety, reduce the incidence of dog bites, and come at a lower cost to the taxpayer. In November of 2020, Denver voters took a step in the right direction by voting to lift the 30-year pit bull ban in favor of a breed-restricted permitting program. Kristina and Quinn discuss the current success of the organization, as well as the future. This week Anna is joined by Beverley Cuddy who amongst other dog-centric roles, is one of the Patrons of SAMPA - the Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance. They chat about the great news that government are introducing new legislation - the Pet Abduction Law to make penalties for dog theft in line with the crime. With specific legislation that recognises that dogs are clearly not ‘property' or chattel with consequences of up to seven years in prison for ‘abducting' a dog. The hope is that dog theft will decrease. A long time coming, this law has been campaigned for years, not least by Debbie Matthews, and Vets get Scanning. For years criminals have optimised a loophole in the Theft Act 1968 where dogs have been previously classified along with laptops and lawnmowers! The surge in dog theft through the pandemic when the demand for dogs outstripped their supply, made national headlines and brought the attention to the pain and suffering and complete devastation that stealing someone's dog has on families. Government's change to classify dogs separately and not as part of the Theft Act 1968, which clearly has left families vulnerable to nasty criminals, has been spear-headed by Sir Iain Duncan-Smith. Having championed #PetTheftReform, he has helped bring massive change in only a few months. And a major move under their new Animal Action Plan which aims to make Britain a leader in animal welfare globally. The term ‘abduction' implies another aspect of their ‘plan' to classify animals as sentient beings, which is significant and in line with modern socio-economic trends where dogs are now firmly considered as family members and not as property under the Theft Act 1968. We are living with dogs in such different ways now, and dog ownership has soared compared to back in the day as we seek dogs constant companionship, their skills as de-stressors, and their gateway to the outdoors.Discussing the positive changes Government have initiated, we also discuss why the legislation around Breed Specific Legislation isn't as positive, where sadly only two MP's attended a debate in parliament on its possible change much to the disappointment of the dog community. In Beverley's long standing position as Editor of Dogs Today Magazine and founder of Tailwise we also talk about why Beverley has launched a new Awards called the Bark Marks. Recognising successes in the dog world from best TV Vet to best Politician, how chuffed were we to get the scoop that A DOG'S LIFE has been nominated for ‘Best Dog Podcast', which made our day! Chatting about the recent amazing success of Operation Ark to evacuate NOWZAD's animals and team, headed Pen Farthing, out of Afghanistan. And wonder who might play Pen in the movie! This week the RSPCA's Dog Welfare Specialist, Dr Sam Gaines, joins Anna to discuss the latest on Breed Specific Legislation. Following a recent debate in Parliament prompted by a petition urging for reform as the 30th Anniversary of the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991) approached on August 12th. We discuss that as a ‘nation of animal lovers' the UK is behind other countries in its approach to dogs and public safety. The banning of four breeds: the Pitbull, the Japanese Tosa, the Fila Brasiliero, and Dogo Argentino has not worked with dog bites rising year on year. We discuss other approaches not least education, bringing back dog licences, new bylaws that would be in the public's safety. We chat about the potential of an independent review and study to ascertain whether certain breeds are more ‘dangerous' than other breeds or cross breeds. If the independent review concludes there is insufficient evidence to support the Governments position on BSL, the hope is this aspect would have to be revised. Why introducing mandatory training and education courses for minor offences, similar to speed awareness courses for drivers would help nip problem behaviours in the bud, and offer support. We also highlight that currently animal welfare charities like The RSPCA are bound by law not to re-home breeds of a certain ‘type', even if they are temperament tested to be sound. Victims of certain measurements currently means that these dogs have to be destroyed. Causing heart break for vets and the staff, it's also an unnecessary waste of life and costs to these organisations. The current approach to dog control is plagued with deep structural problems, not least judging a book by its cover. Improvements to public safety that simultaneously safeguards animal welfare can only be achieved through an open minded engagement with new strategies. Currently the Government's lack of action on this front shows a disregard for dog welfare and is at odds with its proposed Animal Action Plan to bring in animal welfare legislation that sets a global precedent.Visit the RSPCA's websiteFor more about Anna go to annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhain Ap Gruffydd at Gruff PawtraitsTo advertise on or sponsor A Dog's Life email: info@theloniouspunkproductions.com

We recorded this episode months ago. Before Denver even knew they would be on the ballot. Before the campaign. Before the WIN. So when you hear any references to Denver, think 'post spring time loss due to Mayoral veto'.Breed Specific Legislation is disturbing and makes my soul sad. For me it roots down so much deeper then dogs perceived as pit bulls because I feel it's a direct reflection of how our society deals with things we fear. Exclude it. Push it out. Try to pretend it doesn't exist. These types of thoughts are humanity problems as far as I'm concerned. The cool thing is that when we see it happening in one area and we identify it's wrong, that gives us an opportunity to explore where else it's happening and consider how we feel about it. So that's the challenge for today. Learn. Identify. Consider. When we know better we do better right?!? I love that you're here to elevate your advocacy with us! Denver, Colorado has a ban on dogs perceived as pit bulls that has been in place for 30 years! Thousands of innocent dogs have perished, been displaced and suffered greatly simply because of their appearance. On November 3rd, the citizens of Denver have an opportunity to change the future for all pit bull type dogs! I had the privilege of visiting Denver a few weeks ago to work along side the beautiful people of Replace Denver BSL - a group of some of the most hard working and dedicated folks I've ever met.Enjoy my interview with Quinn, one of the organizers and founders of RDBSL. We had a great time sitting back and shooting the sh!t about Breed Specific Legislation, years of preparation, a devastating knock down and the monumental fortitude and perseverance it's taken to see the historical ballot measure 2J added to Denver's 2020 election!Successful replacement of this ban is inexplicably important to the health and happiness of dogs known as pit bulls... but I have to say that regardless of the outcome on November 3rd...I want ALL who took part in this campaign to know that you DID NOT FAIL. Ernie Ward and Cyndie Courtney along with registered veterinary technician Beckie Mossor weigh in on the ongoing UK push to ban certain breeds. What are the reasons, who are the folks leading the conversation, and what are the proposed solutions? This is a lively review of the current state of breed restrictions along with some of the trio’s own potential solutions. This episode also marks Cyndie’s last podcast with the team after nearly 2.5 years! Cyndie’s family is growing and she needs to take more time to be with her (almost) new child. Pit Bull media bias is the pits. They discuss Breed Specific Legislation, every decade's "Dog to Hate," and Vicky reads headlines about Golden Retrievers versus Pit Bulls. Justin maintains that there are no breed-specific behaviors, and the group puts him to the test. Noah knows the facts about pit bulls, but is still weary to get one for his family. Justin tries to bring him to the good side and won't give up until Noah see the light. Kristen and Vicky judge chihuahuas. In this podcast we discuss Steve's new book Puppy Tales, Jordan's very public change in training methods after BBC's The One Show and Breed Specific Legislation. Jordan Shelley famously crossed over from punitive, dominance-based training methods after a stint on BBC's The One Show. He was aided in doing so by well known trainers like Ian Dunbar and Grisha Stewart. Now he's a professional training and behaviour specialist based in the New Forest in England that advocates for positive training and the end of breed specific legislation (BSL). Steve Goodall is co-author of the book Puppy Tales: Jack and Billy and runs Goodall Dog Training in Southampton, England with his wife Corrin. Together they co-host the Barking Mad Show podcast along with Gav Muldoon who unfortunately couldn't be here for this podcast. We’re back and as full of news for your pets as ever! We appreciate your patience. Now on to the animals! We make up for missing an episode with a bunch of news. To start, there’s another dog food recall, so be sure to check if your food is on the list. In some better news out of the FDA, there’s a new drug approved to help treat dogs with anxiety. And a report out of the UK shows that Breed Specific Legislation caused the deaths of hundreds on innocent dogs. Finally, Florida is trying to figure out what to do with all those greyhounds we mentioned last episode, and an Ikea in Italy is really taking the Christmas spirit to heart and allowing stray dogs to hang out in the store and on the furniture. Yes, there’s a video too. And your questions! My dog has dry skin, do I need to buy the fancy products from the vet? My pet doesn’t know it’s the holidays, don’t buy her my gifts! And how to secure your Christmas tree to make sure the cat won’t take it down.

Welcome to episode 3 of the Individual Animal, a podcast about animal welfare and discrimination. Today, we talk with Donald Cleary about how social constructs affect how we relate to dogs and in turn, how that affects how we relate to each other. Some of you might be surprised by a few things, including that moral panics about dogs extend beyond dogs labeled "pit bull." Don has an impressive bio, which we get into in the episode. What we don't touch on is that he's a co-author of the U.S. Department of Justice manual "The Problem of Dog-Related Incidents and Encounters," and of “Co-occurrence of potentially preventable factors in 256 dog bite-related fatalities in the United States (2000–2009),” a comprehensive study published in 2013 the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. We also reference The Relevance of Breed in Selecting a Companion Dog by Janis Bradley, which you can read here. And for anyone interested in a comprehensive look at how social constructs have affected "pit bull" dogs and their owners, Bronwen Dickey's book Pit Bull: The Battle Over an American Icon is a must-read.

People have created different breeds of dogs for a long time. The dog has been our companion for over 16,000 years. We have been counting on them, living with them and working with them. Breeding dogs was done to improve certain skill sets. Pointing, Hunting, Sniffing, Retrieving, Pulling Sleds, Tracking, you name it. Later also fashion and emotional traits became a reason to create a certain kind of dog. So what happens when a certain breed all of a sudden becomes 'out of vogue'? Is it really that the breed is now misbehaving? What are we creating with the projections, expectations and judgements we heap on certain dogs? Remember when it was dangerous to have a German Shepherd? A dog bred for herding? And then it was the Rottweiler that became the dangerous dog and the Doberman Pinscher. Now it's the Pit Bull's turn. What does Charlie have to say about the judgements that are being put on his breed? Are our dogs breed aware? Do they know if they are a Boxer, or a Yorkshire Terrier? What do we have to be aware of when we are around the dangerous dog of the year? Let's find out how Charlie sees the world of breeds!
Host Marie Hulett talks with Denise Fleck, author of book that covers everything from breed specific legislation to why black dogs in shelters have trouble getting adopted. Learn more at http://fixit-foundation.org/getyourfix/ NOTE: There is a slight technical issue at the beginning of this podcast. Last week's episode plays for about 5 minutes before the new episode begins. Fast forward about 5 minutes to get to the new episode. Enjoy!
Breed Specific Legislation allows the government to declare certain breeds of dogs as 'dangerous'. Jen Adams, an activist against BSL, speaks about the problems with this type of legislation, which discriminates against the breed of the dog and fails to address the treatment of the dog by its owner. Jen expresses the struggle to get the government to reconsider these laws, but also talks about the small victories she has achieved along the way, receiving support from the community. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/themissioncontrolpodcast/message
Are some dog breeds more aggressive because of biology, or because they were trained that way? What determines whether a dog is vicious-- its breed or whether its attacked a human, dog or cat? Some cities and states have breed-specific legislation which restricts or prohibits owning certain canine breeds. HearSay Veterinarian Phyllis Neumann from Todds Lane Veterinary Hospital in Hampton will discuss some of the pros and cons of breed-specific restrictions. We'll also take your pet health questions.
