When people talk about raw feeding, the conversation often begins - and ends - with pathogens. But what if that's causing us to overlook much bigger questions? In Part 2 of my conversation with veterinarian and canine nutrition researcher Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman of the University of Helsinki's independent research group, DogRisk, we explore what researchers are beginning to discover now that raw-fed dogs are finally being studied more closely. We dive into one of the most controversial topics in canine nutrition: food safety and pathogen risk. But we also look beyond the headlines to examine how risk is assessed, what the evidence actually shows, and whether our focus on acute hazards sometimes prevents us from investigating potential long-term health outcomes. From there, we explore some of the most fascinating questions emerging from fresh feeding research:• What benefits are researchers seeing repeatedly in fresh-fed dogs?• Are the advantages of fresh feeding linked to rawness itself, or simply reduced processing?• How should we think about the relationship between dogs, wolves, and diet?• Do dogs actually need plants?• Why does nutrient form matter as much as nutrient quantity?• What happens metabolically when dogs consume fresh foods versus ultra-processed diets?• Why might healthy fresh-fed dogs display different bloodwork values than conventionally fed dogs? This is a thoughtful, nuanced conversation about evidence, curiosity, and the questions we may not have been asking.Whether you feed raw, gently cooked, kibble with fresh additions, or are simply curious about canine nutrition, this episode offers a fascinating look at what we're learning as research begins to catch up with practice.Connect with Dr Anna and the DogRisk team: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/dogrisk-health-via-nutrition-epidemiology-and-disease-detection-dogshttps://instagram.com/dogriskConnect with me!Website: https://mysticdogmama.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/mysticdogmamaI'd love to invite you to join my free Facebook community, The Nourished Pack. Send us Fan MailRoutine stifle exploration during canine cranial cruciate ligament surgery sounds like common sense, until you ask the uncomfortable question: what if “doing more” doesn't reliably improve long-term function for most dogs? We sit down with Dr. Dan Low to unpack long-term outcomes after high tibial osteotomy procedures (TPLO and CCWO) performed without routine arthroscopy or arthrotomy and without proactive meniscal evaluation, a real-world approach many clinicians use but rarely see studied in depth. We break down what high tibial osteotomy actually changes in the cruciate-deficient stifle, then get practical about evidence. Dan explains why this large case series matters, how uncommon events become easier to estimate with bigger numbers, and why validated owner-reported tools like LOAD (Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs) and the Canine Orthopedic Index give us a more standardized view of recovery than vague “good” or “excellent” labels. We also discuss one of the most debated points in veterinary orthopedics: late meniscectomy. When a meniscal sparing strategy produces a low late-intervention rate that looks similar to rates reported in explored joints, it raises a bigger issue about which meniscal lesions are truly clinically meaningful. We don't pretend one study settles the debate. You'll hear the strongest criticisms of this design, the patient groups where exploration still makes sense (uncertain diagnosis, revision cases), and the unanswered research questions that could reshape how we balance morbidity, time, and cost in dog knee surgery. If you treat CCL disease, refer cruciate cases, or counsel owners through surgical options, this conversation will sharpen how you explain risk-benefit decisions without defaulting to habit.Subscribe for more evidence-focused veterinary conversations, share this episode with a colleague, and leave a rating or review wherever you listen.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.25.11.0736INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ?JAVMA ® : https://avma.org/JAVMAAuthorsAJVR ® : https://avma.org/AJVRAuthorsFOLLOW US:JAVMA ® :Facebook: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association - JAVMA | FacebookInstagram: JAVMA (@avma_javma) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: JAVMA (@AVMAJAVMA) / Twitter AJVR ® : Facebook: American Journal of Veterinary Research - AJVR | FacebookInstagram: AJVR (@ajvroa) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: AJVR (@AJVROA) / TwitterJAVMA ® and AJVR ® LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/company/avma-journals

What happens when a police canine is given just two weeks to live? For Chris Bingham, Tambo's cancer diagnosis became more than a fight for survival. It became a story of loyalty, hope, healing, and reconciliation. In this episode of the Starter Girlz Podcast, Jennifer Loehding sits down with Chris Bingham, veteran law enforcement officer and handler to retired federal police K9 Tambo, for a powerful conversation about the bond between a handler and his canine partner. Tambo was once labeled difficult to bond with. But Chris saw something deeper in him—a reflection of his own story, his own wounds, and his own desire to be seen beyond the labels placed on him. After Tambo was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer and given about two weeks to live, Chris chose to fight for more time. What followed was a journey that inspired thousands, reached people facing cancer themselves, and unexpectedly helped Chris reconnect with his father before it was too late. This is a story about loyalty under pressure, the healing power of second chances, and the way one dog's fight became bigger than anyone could have imagined. ⭐ About Chris Bingham Chris Bingham is a veteran law enforcement officer, K9 handler, author, and advocate for retired police and military working dogs. His partnership with retired federal police K9 Tambo has become a powerful story of loyalty, resilience, and hope after Tambo was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer. Text Me Your QuestionsFireworks can turn the Fourth of July into a terrifying experience for many dogs. Trembling, hiding, pacing, excessive panting, drooling, escape attempts, and panic are not signs of stubbornness or disobedience. They are signs of genuine fear, anxiety, and, in many cases, noise phobia. In this episode of Dog Training Today, Certified Canine Behaviorist Will Bangura explains the science behind fireworks anxiety in dogs and why so many dogs struggle during Independence Day celebrations. You'll learn what happens inside the canine brain during fear and panic, why obedience training alone does not solve noise sensitivity, and how evidence-based behavior modification can help dogs feel safer and more confident. Will discusses the gold-standard behavior modification techniques of desensitization and counterconditioning, how to create a safe refuge room during fireworks events, common myths about fearful dogs, the role of veterinary behavioral medicine, and when professional help may be necessary.Topics Covered:• Fireworks anxiety in dogs• Noise phobia and sound sensitivity• Understanding the canine fear response• Desensitization and counterconditioning• Creating a safe room for fireworks season• Why punishment makes fear worse• Common myths about comforting fearful dogs• Veterinary behaviorists and behavioral medication• When to seek professional help• Evidence-based dog behavior modificationRead the complete guide:https://phoenixdogtraining.com/dogs-scared-of-fireworks/Need professional help? Will Bangura, M.S., CAB-ICB, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, FDM, FFCP is a Certified Canine Behaviorist with more than 35 years of experience helping pet parents resolve dog aggression, anxiety, fears, phobias, reactivity, separation anxiety, and other serious behavior problems through science-based, force-free methods.Phoenix Dog Training:https://phoenixdogtraining.comDogBehaviorist.com:https://dogbehaviorist.comSchedule a behavior consultation:https://phoenixdogtraining.com/dog-behavior-consultations/Hosted by Will Bangura, Certified Canine Behaviorist and host of the Dog Training Today Podcast.Support the showIf you need professional help please visit my Dog Behaviorist website.Go here for Free Dog Training Articles

Do you know you can learn a secret power from dogs that will change your life? It is called extending loving energy without expectation. On this week's episode of Love University, we explore how dogs offer a simple but profound lesson in elevated human connection. They give affection freely, stay emotionally present, and express warmth without constantly calculating what they will receive in return. You can benefit greatly when you apply this kind of unconditional loving energy in your relationships, work, and everyday interactions. Here are three ways to utilize the dog love secret in your own life: Show Genuine Interest in Other People Dogs pay close attention to humans. They follow them, observe them, and stay emotionally engaged. Human beings often do the opposite, becoming trapped in self-consciousness and constantly thinking about their own worries, appearance, or needs. One of the most attractive qualities you can develop is the ability to display sincere interest in others. Ask people about their goals, passions, struggles, and dreams. Listen carefully instead of waiting for your turn to speak. When you focus on others with curiosity and empathy, people feel seen and appreciated. That emotional connection naturally draws them closer to you. Bring More Enthusiasm Into Daily Life Dogs greet life with enthusiasm. They play, explore, run, jump, and approach ordinary moments with excitement. Adults often lose that spirit through routine, stress, and emotional heaviness. Enthusiasm changes your emotional presence. This week, aim to be more playful and laugh more freely. Enjoy spontaneous moments and approach life with greater openness and less rigidity. People will be drawn to you when you radiate energy, warmth, and humor. Do Nice Things Without Keeping Score Dogs show affection naturally. They comfort people, stay close during difficult moments, and offer companionship without worrying about what they will receive back. Your relationships become more loving and joyful when you give in a similar spirit. You can have a tremendous emotional impact on others when you offer a kind word, listen empathetically without judgement, and help someone through a hard time. When you give from your genuine goodwill rather than hidden expectations, you strengthen both yourself and those you help. This creates more rewarding relationships, greater emotional peace, and a deeper sense of fulfillment. Start today. Apply the loving energy of the dog and learn the secrets of authentic connection. Love without expectation and your world will be transformed

What if one of the biggest problems in canine nutrition is that we've barely studied fresh food at all?In this deep and thought-provoking conversation, I sit down with veterinarian and researcher Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman from the University of Helsinki's DogRisk research group - one of the only independent, university-connected teams in the world researching raw feeding and fresh food diets in dogs. But this episode isn't about telling you what you should feed your dog. It's about asking a much bigger question:How do we actually know what we know about canine nutrition?Together, we explore how pet food research is conducted, why so much of it focuses on ultra-processed diets, and what happens when fresh and raw food are finally brought into the scientific conversation.Dr Anna shares her own journey from conventional veterinary medicine into a more integrative approach to canine health — including acupuncture, nutrition, and preventative care — and why she became passionate about researching the relationship between food and chronic disease. We also dive into:why there is still surprisingly little independent long-term research on canine nutrition, how veterinary nutrition education is shaped, what “complete and balanced” actually means, why the form of a nutrient matters just as much as the nutrient itself, how processing changes the way a dog's body metabolizes and utilizes food, and why fresh-fed dogs may require entirely different frameworks for feeding guidelines, lab reference ranges, and health evaluation. This is a conversation about nuance, evidence, and curiosity beyond fear, marketing, and polarized internet debates.Whether you feed raw, gently cooked, wet food, kibble, or somewhere in between, this episode invites us to think more deeply about what health really looks like for our dogs - and how science can evolve when we begin asking better questions. And this is only part one.In the next episode, Anna and I will dive into one of the most controversial aspects of this conversation: pathogens, risk, food safety, and the myths surrounding raw feeding. If this episode resonated with you, please share it with a fellow dog guardian, leave a review, or tag us on Instagram @mysticdogmama with your biggest takeaway. These conversations matter because the future of canine health depends on the questions we're willing to ask.More about DogRisk:https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/dogrisk-health-via-nutrition-epidemiology-and-disease-detection-dogsRegister for the DogRisk Seminar: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/health-via-nutrition-epidemiology-and-disease-detection-dogs/news-and-happenings/save-the-date-the-8th-dogrisk-seminar-2026Connect with me!Website: https://mysticdogmama.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/mysticdogmamaCome join my free Facebook group, First Light. This episode is sponsored by Zoetis. Canine osteoarthritis is far more common, and far more underdiagnosed, than most veterinary professionals realize. In a recent episode of the Vet Blast Podcast presented by dvm360, Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, sat down with Mikayla Mayland, DVM, DACVS, to discuss the latest thinking on osteoarthritis in dogs and why early recognition matters more than ever.Throughout the episode, the duo challenges everything veterinary professionals thought they knew about canine osteoarthritis, from which dogs are actually at risk to what the real first step of OA management is.

Bio Rodney Kaufman In an industry often defined by good intentions, Rodney Kaufman has built his reputation on something far more powerful: standards. As the founder of Corporate Canine Therapy, Rodney is not only shaping how therapy dog programs are delivered across the GTA and Ottawa; he is influencing how organizations think about psychological safety, risk management, and human wellness through the lens of canine-assisted support. With more than 10,000 hours of hands-on field experience, his work has taken place in the environments where excellence is not optional: hospitals, complex care units, schools, large corporate workplaces, and first responder settings. This is not theory. This is lived expertise. From Frontline Volunteering to Advanced Hospital Placements Rodney's career began with years of volunteering through St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Services, progressing through every handler level and culminating in advanced placements at SickKids. Working alongside his soul dog, Harlow, he supported paediatric patients, families, and peer support initiatives that included first responders. Their work in complex care environments required a rare level of stability, intuition, and trust. The very qualities that now define the teams he mentors. In recognition of her extraordinary impact, Harlow was awarded Volunteer of the Year at SickKids for her work with children under one year of age. Today, Rodney's work continues with Juno, his Great Dane and the current mascot of Corporate Canine Therapy who is a visible symbol of the calm, confident presence that has become the organization's signature. As Corporate Canine Therapy continues to grow, Rodney's role is increasingly that of mentor, evaluator, and thought leader. Developing the next generation of therapy dog teams while helping institutions integrate canine-assisted wellness in a way that is ethical, effective, and sustainable. Because in the right hands, a therapy dog program is not a visit. It is a strategy. www.corporatecaninetherapy.ca Corporatecaninetherapy@gmail.com

Send us Fan MailMetronidazole has been the reflex prescription for canine acute diarrhea for years and that habit is hard to break. We sit down with Dr. Erin Fry to unpack what the data actually says about outcomes in mild to moderate acute diarrhea, including cases with bloody stool, and why supportive care often matches antibiotics for speed of recovery. Along the way, we get honest about the real reasons “we know better” doesn't always translate into “we do it” when a worried client is sitting in front of us. We walk through what uncomplicated acute diarrhea looks like in practice and what supportive care really means: hydration plans, a highly digestible diet, smart fiber use, and when probiotics may fit. Erin also explains why the gut microbiome is now central to the conversation, and how antibiotic-associated dysbiosis can linger for weeks to months, with special concern for puppies and kittens. If you've ever prescribed “just in case” because you feared missing something, this conversation gives you a clearer risk-benefit frame grounded in randomized controlled trials and day-to-day clinical reality. Then we zoom out to the culture of prescribing. Peer expectations inside a hospital, mixed standards between clinics, client demand for instant gratification, and the challenges faced by newer grads or relief doctors all shape decisions. Erin shares practical tools for behavior change, including practice-wide talking points, team alignment from front desk to exam room, and a concrete starting point using the AVMA antimicrobial stewardship checklist. If you want a clearer, evidence-based approach to treating canine acute diarrhea without unnecessary antibiotics, listen now, share this with a colleague, and leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.25.10.0686AVMA veterinary checklist for antimicrobial stewardship: Veterinary-Checklist-Antimicrobial-Stewardship.pdfINTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ?JAVMA ® : https://avma.org/JAVMAAuthorsAJVR ® : https://avma.org/AJVRAuthorsFOLLOW US:JAVMA ® :Facebook: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association - JAVMA | FacebookInstagram: JAVMA (@avma_javma) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: JAVMA (@AVMAJAVMA) / Twitter AJVR ® : Facebook: American Journal of Veterinary Research - AJVR | FacebookInstagram: AJVR (@ajvroa) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: AJVR (@AJVROA) / TwitterJAVMA ® and AJVR ® LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/company/avma-journals

If your dog goes to heaven, will she see Jesus as a dog? Kaitlyn and Mike explore what the Bible actually says about animals, God's care for creation, and whether the pets we love might be part of the new creation. They tackle why Jesus became human and why that particular, embodied humanity still matters today. The conversation leads to a bigger question many adults quietly assume: is Jesus whoever we want him to be? And what happens when the real Jesus challenges the version we've made in our own image. 0:00 - Theme Song 1:05 - Will Jesus Look Like a Dog to Dogs? 5:04 - God Loves Animals 12:11 - Is Jesus Still Human? 19:00 - Sponsor - Toups and Co Organics - Simplify your routine and feel good about what you put on your skin.
