In June 2024, a woman in Columbia, Maryland, took her dogs out for a routine late-night walk—only to find herself locking eyes with an 8-foot-tall, white-furred entity lurking at the edge of a powerline field. It didn't growl. It didn't charge. She just watched. When she retreated into her apartment and locked the door, the knob rattled seconds later. A silent message was delivered: You are not alone. That same month, new reports have surfaced from Alabama, West Virginia, Oregon, and North Carolina—dozens of them—each describing eerily similar encounters with upright, canine-like beings. Are we truly facing a rise in cryptid canine activity? Or are we simply becoming more aware—more connected—through the digital lens of our curiosity and fear? In tonight's presentation, we'll explore the possibility that something fundamental is happening… but also ask the more complex questions. Are we witnessing a surge of actual phenomena—or a modern myth evolving in real time?Let's begin by walking the timeline: From historic Rougarou tales whispered in Louisiana's swamps, to the snarling beast that shattered a kitchen door in Clarksville, Maryland, to a man in Oregon who swears a creature watched him release a mouse into the woods before vanishing into the trees. These accounts span generations and geography—but now, they're being shared faster, louder, and more often than ever. Could social media, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, and even AI-generated visuals be shaping our perception? Could the so-called "Digital Dogman" be a modern folklore fed by virality, deepfakes, and algorithmic belief bubbles? At the same time, there are real-world shifts that can't be ignored. Wildlife habitats are shrinking. Climate extremes are forcing animals into new territories. The post-pandemic boom in hiking, camping, and rural living has driven humans into areas we once left alone. More people may be simply encountering what's always been there—or misinterpreting what they want to believe is there. And let's not forget the psychological factors: heightened global anxiety, uncertainty, and our deep-rooted tendency to anthropomorphize shadows in the dark.Still, we can't dismiss the sincerity of the people coming forward. Whether it's a mistake, a trick of the light, or something we haven't yet classified—what matters is that witnesses are being shaken to their core. And that demands our attention. So tonight, we look at it all: the genuine reports, the hoaxes, the social media influence, the science, the speculation—and the enduring mystery. Stay with me. And if you've seen something you can't explain, I want to hear from you.

Natalie Marks, DVM, CVJ, CCFP, Elite FFC-V, is an award-winning small animal veterinarian with over 20 years of clinical experience, previous practice owner, industry consultant, educator, media expert, co-owner of Veterinary Ownership Advocates, and CEO of VANE (the Veterinary Angel Network for Entrepreneurs). She is committed to supporting innovation in the animal health space and mentoring and supporting young founders and practice owners. Joya Griffin, DVM, DACVD, is an Ohio native and graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. While attending Cornell, she earned numerous awards, including the Dermatology Service Award for her aptitude in clinical dermatology and her research on Malassezia otitis externa. After graduation, she completed an internship at VCA Berwyn and Aurora Animal Hospitals in Chicago where she was awarded the Intern Abstract Award for her presentation on Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Griffin returned to Cornell University in 2007 for a residency in dermatology and, after completing her residency-training program, served one year as an instructor of dermatology teaching fourth-year clinical students as well as lecturing to underclassmen on bacterial, fungal, and immune-mediated skin diseases. Griffin became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD) in August 2010 and joined the Animal Dermatology Group. She has a special interest in fungal and immune-mediated skin diseases as well as feline and equine dermatology. She enjoys lecturing to fellow veterinarians, mentoring residents, and teaching the veterinary students who extern with her. Griffin also stars in the Nat Geo WILD television series, “Pop Goes the Vet with Dr. Joya,” which highlights the challenging and mysterious cases she encounters in veterinary dermatology. Griffin always strives to care for her patients as if they are her own pets and loves building a long-lasting relationship with their pet parents. Outside of work, Griffin enjoys spending time with her family and pets. She is happily married to Forrest Cummings, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), a veterinary internal medicine specialist, and they have 3 children - Caden and boy/girl twins, Coby and Carter. They have two cats, Donut and Peach Coffee, and two dogs, Guri and Magic. She loves traveling, entertaining and working out. Julia Miller, DVM, DACVD, is an Upstate NY native who grew up in the hallways of Cornell's vet school. She tried her hand at vocal performance (opera) in undergrad at Indiana University and in spite of having a blast singing all day long, she decided that her first true love, animals, offered a more stable and satisfying career. She graduated from Cornell's vet school in 2012 and then completed a large animal rotating internship at the University of Georgia. Mixed animal general practice kept her busy for the next few years where she also found herself falling in love with dermatology. She made her way back to Cornell and completed a dermatology residency after which she stayed on as faculty. When not ooing and aaahing over the grossest skin you can find Julia playing with her three bully-breed dogs (the squish!), singing in a rock cover band, or riding any horse that she can sit on.

In this heartwarming episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty sits down with two incredible children's book creators who are redefining storytelling for young readers. Cyndi Marko and Taylor Wooley share deeply personal journeys that transform personal challenges into powerful narratives for children. Cyndi Marko's graphic novel "The Elephant in the Room, Mabel Makes (Up) A Friend" introduces readers to Mabel, a neurodivergent character inspired by Cyndi's own childhood experiences. Through Mabel's story, children learn about navigating changes, making friends, and understanding themselves. Cyndi candidly discusses her struggles with internal hyperactivity and how those experiences shaped her character's development. Taylor Wooley brings a delightful twist with "Earth Rover," a picture book about a basset hound dreaming of becoming a NASA lunar rover. Inspired by her own dog and childhood experiences, Taylor crafts a story that encourages children to pursue their dreams, regardless of how impossible they might seem. Both authors share a common thread: transforming personal challenges into opportunities for growth and storytelling. Cyndi's journey from a frequent-moving child to a celebrated author, and Taylor's triumph over spelling difficulties, demonstrate the power of persistence and creativity. The conversation goes beyond storytelling, touching on critical issues like childhood loneliness, the impact of social media, and the importance of nurturing children's imagination. These authors aren't just writing books; they're creating windows into complex emotional landscapes that help children understand themselves and the world around them. For parents looking to inspire their children, this episode offers more than book recommendations. It's a masterclass in supporting kids' creativity, embracing differences, and showing that everyone's unique story matters. Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply love children's literature, this episode promises to entertain, inspire, and remind us of the transformative power of storytelling. What if the behaviours that frustrate you most in your dog aren't just about them… but about you?In this episode of FETCH First Friday, we explore the tender and transformative topic of shadow work—the hidden parts of ourselves our dogs so often bring to light. You'll hear us talk about:What the “shadow” actually is (and why it's not bad)How dogs mirror the emotions and patterns we've pushed awayPersonal stories of the moments our dogs revealed something we didn't want to seeWhy reactivity, over-protectiveness, control, or guilt in our dogs often invite us to look inwardA gentle, step-by-step way to begin this work without shame or blameThis conversation sits at the heart of Curiosity and Holistic Health, two pillars of the FETCH framework.Because the truth is: our dogs are not just companions. They're sensitive, empathic beings who often carry or reflect what we're not yet ready to hold. And when we start to see these patterns with compassion, something shifts. Not just for them, but for us.If you've ever wondered why a certain behaviour from your dog feels so activating—or if you've sensed your dog is here to teach you something deeper—this episode is for you.Grab your FREE copy of our FETCH Starter Pack here, including our new shadow work guide: https://www.learnfetch.com/pages/fetch-starter-packDive into summer with our FETCH Summer Almanac https://www.learnfetch.com/products/the-f-e-t-c-h-almanac-summerJoin our FETCH First Light Facebook Group community! https://facebook.com/groups/fetchfirstlightInstagram https://instagram.com/learn.fetchhttps://mysticdogmama.comHttps://instagram.com/mysticdogmama

The K9PT Academy Podcast: Business lessons for canine rehab therapists
Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business! In this episode, we dive into a vital topic that often feels overwhelming for many canine rehab business owners — understanding your business metrics and financial structure. Dr Francisco shares the exact framework he uses (and teaches) to break down financials, simplify budgeting, and understand profitability without getting lost in the weeds. Whether you're solo and mobile or run a larger facility with a team, these insights will help you feel more confident navigating the numbers side of your business. Listen to the full episode as we discuss: Different business models = different metrics: Profit margins and financial expectations will vary greatly depending on whether you're a solo mobile provider or running a larger clinic with staff and overhead. Four main expense categories to track: Break down your budget into overhead, payroll, administrative/operational, and marketing to simplify tracking and avoid overwhelm. Ideal budget allocation framework: Aim for 10% overhead, 50–55% payroll, 15–20% admin, and 5–10% marketing to maintain a healthy 20% profit margin. Include yourself in the numbers: Don't forget to calculate your owner salary in payroll and understand if you're measuring profit before or after owner compensation and debt payments. Payroll is your biggest investment: Especially as you grow — plan for sustainable clinician and admin compensation while keeping overall costs in check. Marketing fuels the business: Invest in consistent, strategic marketing to grow sustainably — and expect higher spend early on or during growth phases. Profit is not a bad word: Profit allows your business to sustain, grow, and serve you and your community better — don't be afraid to make money. In today's very delayed podcast, we discuss the oft ignored aspect of a dog - it's mental health and well-being. This is tied directly to physical health as well, and is usually diagnosed as "stubborn", "stupid", "crazy",etc. Developing a well-balanced dog begins when you bring them home, and for the breeder, in the first 8 weeks. Mental health for humans is often overlooked or undervalued, and this is certainly true for our canine buddies.

In this episode, I unpack a conversation that came up repeatedly during recent strategy calls with canine rehabpreneurs—how to confidently raise your rates without fear, guilt, or second-guessing. If you've ever struggled with the thought of increasing your fees because of client pushback or fear of being judged, this one's for you. We'll explore how money mindset, fear of rejection, and the psychology of pricing all play a role—and more importantly, how you can shift that mindset to build a more sustainable and profitable business.. Listen to the full episode as we discuss: Fear of rejection—not pricing—often holds us back from charging what we're worth. Rejection isn't personal: it's usually due to a lack of trust, not your skill or value. Trust takes time—successful selling requires nurturing systems, not just a one-time pitch. Pricing communicates value—being “too cheap” can cause prospective clients to question your legitimacy. Fear of judgment from peers, clients, or even family often drives underpricing. Higher rates enable sustainability—to grow, delegate, and serve your clients better, you must charge accordingly. You're not charging more just to make more—you're charging for the business you want to build. The breakthrough starts with mindset—work on self-worth, confidence, and clarity around your value. Interproximal Reduction, When, Why, and How | 9 MINUTE SUMMARY In this episode, I dive into the fundamentals of interproximal reduction(IPR) when to use it, why it matters, and how to do it effectively. We'll cover how much IPR can safely be carried out, compare differentclinical protocols and their pros and cons, and take a critical look at howaligner software plans IPR (and where it may fall short). This summary is based on Dr. Flavia Artese's insightful lecture at therecent American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session in Philadelphia, along with insights from my own clinical research and experience. This week I'm talking with Dr Micah Halpern, a geneticist who has worked with many species including zoo animal population health, and is currently the pricipal scientist and owner of GenSol Diagnostics. Micah and I got nerdy about genetic testing for canine health and other traits - what are some of the different technologies involved, and how do we think about what "accurate" means in terms of results? I've had a long break from recording podcast episodes and I'm coming back gradually. My series of unfortunate injuries seem to be coalescing into chronic pain that makes working difficult. The Functional Dog Collaborative is a high priority for me but sometimes I do have to take a break from this podcast while I recover a bit, and this was one of those times. I hope to have episodes coming out more regularly, but also a bit more slowly than previously, for a while, while I improve and ramp them back up. I appreciate your patience.

Conditioning for Canine AthletesHost Laura Reeves is joined by Dr. Ashley Nixon to discuss conditioning our canine athletes, whether for the show ring, dock diving, agility and more."Cardio's good for everybody," Nixon said, "but I think it's really important to consider the sport you're doing and what you're asking your dog to do. They can be cardiovascularly fit, but maybe they don't have the propulsion to do some dock diving or agility, right? So I think it's super important to kind of keep that in mind and not just say, hey, I walk my dog, we go for a run, we're fit, we're good."I like a ton of stuff you can actually do at home with basic equipment (for conditioning work). You can have them do some push-ups on an unstable surface, like a little exercise ball. You can have them pivot. It's great. Front end up, back end up. I love sit to stands for these guys and you can do a ton of different variations. You can have them do it on a mattress, Fit Bones are great. Cavalettis are great for these guys. You can especially pick up some changes in their gait or change their gait."(Cavalettis) are super versatile and if you want some flexion, you can have serpentines over the cavalettis and arrange them in, you know, semi circles, get some nice spinal flexion. Like that."Listen to the full episode for more from:Dr Ashley Nixon DVM, CVA, CVMRT, CVSMT, FCOAC, CAMP, CSCCChief of StaffDr. Ashley Nixon knew she wanted to be a veterinarian since she was just 3 years old. That passion inspired her to obtain her DVM from St. Matthew's University School of Veterinary Medicine, and complete her clinical year at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She received her CVMRT (massage & rehabilitation) and CVSMT (spinal manipulation) certifications from the Healing Oasis, and was trained and certified in veterinary acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Veterinary Medicine. She passed additional testing to become a fellow of the College of Animal Chiropractors, and received a certification in arthritis management. She is certified in arthritis case management. Dr. Nixon has a special interest in sports and conditioning, and is certified through NC State. Prior to the ATC, she most recently worked at a specialty referral practice in the south as a rehabilitation veterinarian. She is active with multiple dog sports.
