Did the reality TV show Biggest Loser permanently damage contestants' metabolisms, or is that just another excuse we tell ourselves? In this episode, we dive into the behind-the-scenes world of The Biggest Loser with former trainer Kim Lyons. Kim breaks her silence after years of staying quiet and shares her firsthand experiences from seasons three and four, and reveals what really happened behind the cameras, why the "damaged metabolism" theory makes her blood boil, and the shocking truth about why contestants really gained their weight back. Kim doesn't hold back as she exposes the difference between what made good TV versus what actually worked for weight loss, shares the real calorie numbers contestants were eating (spoiler: they weren't starving), and explains why she's tired of hearing medical experts who know nothing about the behind-the-scenes reality give opinions about the show. From the dangerous challenges that actually concerned her to the environmental factors that determined long-term success, this episode will change everything you think you know about extreme weight loss, metabolism, and what's really possible for transformation. Plus, Kim shares her controversial take on the current GLP-1 craze and why she believes the future of weight loss looks completely different than what we're seeing in Hollywood right now. In this compelling episode, Heather Creekmore unpacks the cultural impact of Netflix's Fit for TV: The Biggest Loser Documentary. With her trademark blend of vulnerability and biblical wisdom, Heather examines how The Biggest Loser influenced society's attitudes toward weight loss, body image, health, and the meaning of transformation. Drawing from years of body image ministry and personal experience, she delves into the most damaging messages perpetuated by the show and offers hope for those seeking authentic freedom—especially Christian women who have struggled under the weight of diet culture. Key Topics Discussed: The Damaging Legacy of ‘The Biggest Loser’ TV Show How The Biggest Loser established a false definition of "salvation" through weight loss The cultural obsession with before-and-after photos and the illusion of transformation Exploring the "Biggest Loser Gospel" vs. the true Gospel of Jesus Disordered Fitness & Diet Standards The normalization of extreme calorie deficits and dangerous exercise routines How toxic weight loss methods impacted contestants’ metabolisms and overall health The misleading belief that weight loss equates to happiness, rest, and peace Mental Health & Emotional Consequences The toll of public weight shaming and abusive coaching tactics Why extreme methods for body transformation often worsen fixation on food and body image The Illusion of Control Over Body Size Dispelling the myth that weight is just a matter of discipline and self-control The harm in assuming all bodies can—and should—fit a narrow ideal Christian Perspective on Body Image Why body shaming and weight stigma are incompatible with biblical teachings Understanding the sin of favoritism and prejudice based on appearance (James 2) Embracing our purpose as part of the body of Christ—beyond body size or shape Finding True Freedom from Diet Culture Heather’s call to reject the idolatry of thinness and pursue holistic health and spiritual purpose Wisdom for women navigating body image struggles in the church and beyond Links & Resources Mentioned: ImproveBodyImage.com – 40-Day Body Image Freedom Challenge, resources for Christian women HeatherCreekmore.com – Books, speaking, and 10 days of encouragement Takeaways:Whether you followed The Biggest Loser or felt its ripple effects in your life, this episode offers compassionate clarity. The unavoidable question of the week: why is Jillian Michaels on CNN commenting on slavery, exactly? As it turns out, Netflix provides the answer. The three-part docuseries, Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser, creeps behind the scenes of this uber-popular and uber-disturbing reality show that weirdly promoted fat-shaming while simultaneously pretending to alleviate it. As we'll discuss today, we can't shake the feeling that the biggest loser from this entire mess is all of us. From 2009 to 2020, The Biggest Loser was a phenomenon. A huge cultural moment. What it wasn't, however, was a show about healthy lifestyles and healthy weight loss. Netflix's Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser examines what it was like for some contestants on the show and some members of the production. The push to keep the show in the spotlight wreaked havoc on lives, relationships, and, in some cases, health. Does the documentary series exploit the contestants in a similar way to the show did?Josh Hajjar, who has personal experience with significant weight loss, joins in as guest cohost. On today's P1 Podcast, we break down the once popular show "The Biggest Loser" after Eddie's viewing of the tell all documentary on Netflix and how it may have caused him to do something
The new Fit for TV documentary on The Biggest Loser has us fired up. This reality show wasn't just “entertainment,” it reshaped diet culture, fitness, and the way we think about bodies in ways that were harmful, abusive, and dehumanizing. In this episode, we're breaking down why the show was so damaging and what it means for how we approach health today. This documentary was a stark reminder that your body isn't a spectacle, you don't owe anyone a before-and-after picture, and health should never come at the cost of your dignity. In this episode: How The Biggest Loser normalized extreme and unsafe weight loss practices. The ripple effects it created in gyms, workplaces, and wellness programs across the country. Why diet culture about profit, not health. Weighing benefits vs costs of weight loss programs. Red flags to look out for in trainers, programs, and “health” challenges. What compassionate, sustainable, and whole-person wellness actually looks like. This episode is brought to you by Jukestir. Learn more here: https://jukestir.com/ Connect with us! No, Jillian Michael doesn't appear. Aidan and Noah watch shows so you don't have to and this week they dove headfirst into Netflix's Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser, the explosive three-part documentary exposing what really happened behind the scenes of America's most infamous weight-loss competition. We break down shocking moments like contestant Tracey's near-fatal collapse, the producers' obsession with bigger starting weights, and scandals so messy they could only get printed by the New York Post. Along the way, we talk about The Biggest Loser's legacy: the lasting metabolic and emotional toll on contestants, the rise of body-shaming as entertainment, and whether an “ethical” weight-loss competition could ever exist. In this episode of the Next Level Health and Fitness Podcast, Craig and I sat down to recap the brand-new Biggest Loser documentary on Netflix. It's a three-part series that dives into one of the most controversial weight loss shows ever — and we went deep breaking it all down. We talked about the pros, the cons, and what the show got completely wrong when it comes to creating lasting results. More importantly, we shared what you can actually take away from watching it — and how those lessons apply to dieting and choosing a more sustainable approach. We also dug into the 2016 research study that followed Biggest Loser contestants years after the show. We gave our take on the findings, what they revealed about metabolism, and what it means for anyone out there trying to lose weight and keep it off. Here's what you'll hear in this episode: Our honest thoughts on Netflix's Biggest Loser documentary The good, the bad, and the ugly of the show's approach Why extreme dieting never works long-term Insights from the 2016 metabolism study Why ownership and sustainability are the real keys to success If you've ever felt frustrated with dieting, struggled to keep weight off, or wondered what really happens when you take extreme approaches to weight loss, you're going to get a lot from this one. Hour 1 Jerry and Willie Colon fill in for Boomer and Gio. The Mets bounced back, despite another poor Kodai Senga start (the new human rain delay), scoring many runs with two outs. Mark Vientos is red hot, and Willie says it's time for the Mets to stack wins; Sean Manaea needs to step up tonight. The game was delayed for 10 minutes because the Phillies complained about parabolic mics. Jerry was impressed with the Mets' response. The Yankees did what they needed to do in a lose-lose series. Andrew Bogusch's first update covers the Yankees' win, Jazz Chisholm's 25th homer, Luis Torrens' 5 RBIs, and Francisco Alvarez's potential rehab assignment. Kodai Senga struggled again. With McLaurin and Hendrickson signed, Micah Parsons is the lone hold-in; Dak Prescott is unbothered, and Jerry Recco believes Jerry Jones will get a deal done. Jerry and Willie discuss paying Parsons with a Cowboys fan and Jerry updates his bat situation (the exterminator was jacked). Hour 2 Jerry and Willie discussed Aaron Rodgers' interview, agreeing he tried with the Jets and expect him to excel in Pittsburgh. Terry McLaurin and Trey Hendrickson secured new contracts. The guys believe the Giants, with Russell Wilson, will surprise people and beat the Commanders. Bogusch provided an update, and Jerry mentioned Willie and Eddie Scozzare considering yoga. The Mets won big, and Cam Schlittler had a good start for the Yankees. Willson Contreras had a dugout meltdown. The hour concluded with a yoga call and a discussion about The Biggest Loser documentary. Hour 3 Willie believes Eddie and Fliegs have untapped athletic potential, but they and Jerry disagree. Jerry wonders what activities people spend a lot on but never master, like golf, with top X responses including sex, marriage, gambling, and skiing. Willie was a bad bowler early in his NFL career. The guys discuss the Jets and Giants' offensive and defensive lines. Bogusch updates on Tommy DeVito being waived by the Giants (Willie and Jerry expect him to be picked up) and plays Rodgers' message to Jets fans. The Yankees and Mets both crushed their opponents. Jerry is concerned about the bullpen tonight if Sean Manaea doesn't pitch deep. LIU is getting paid to play Florida, which helps financially, but Jerry and Willie worry about injuries. Finally, Jerry looks at examples of athletes with one standout season and surprising attendance numbers. Jerry thinks Raleigh, not Aaron Judge, should be MVP. Hour 4 The final hour discusses the Mets' win, Willie's concerns about Mendoza's team, and the Jets possibly claiming Tommy DeVito. Jerry and Willie debate why some college players fail in the NFL and agree not to rush Jaxson Dart. Bogusch's update covers DeVito's cut, the Jets' receiver search, and Yankees/Mets blowout wins. The show also questions Ohio State banning Dave Portnoy, features Willie the Yogi, and concludes with a dessert debate: key lime pie vs. chocolate, and cone vs. cup.
Jerry and Willie discussed Aaron Rodgers, agreeing his Jets tenure didn't work out, and expect him to excel in Pittsburgh. Terry McLaurin signed with the Commanders. The Bengals extended Trey Hendrickson; Willie doubts their defense. The guys believe the Giants will surprise with Russell Wilson and beat the Commanders. Bogusch returned for an update. Jerry overheard Willie and Eddie Scozzare considering yoga. The Mets won big against the Phillies, and Cam Schlittler had a good Yankees start. When The Biggest Loser hit TV in the early 2000s, it was a cultural force that shaped how we think about weight, health, and discipline. Now, the new documentary Fit for TV revisits the show's legacy. In this episode, I share my reflections on the documentary through the lens of a non-diet dietitian who grew up watching The Biggest Loser.I break down what the documentary actually got right — and where it fell short. We'll cover:The moments that exposed the physical and psychological harms of the show.Where the doc reinforced fatphobia instead of unpacking weight stigma. The unsustainable and dangerous practices contestants endured How The Biggest Loser dehumanized people in larger bodies for entertainment and profit. The deeper truth about diet culture, capitalism, and who really benefits when you feel your body isn't good enough.Resources mentioned: Download your free research guide PDF: https://leahkernrd.kartra.com/page/8Tz185 Reasons Why Your Weight Doesn't Determine Your Health episode: https://leahkernrd.com/%F0%9F%91%89-5-reasons-why-your-weight-doesnt-determine-your-health/More From Leah:

Episode Summary: In this episode, I'm unpacking the new Netflix documentary Fit for TV about The Biggest Loser—and the uncomfortable parallels to today's GLP-1 craze. On The Biggest Loser, contestants were willing to humiliate themselves, punish their bodies, and risk their health for rapid results. Fast forward 20 years, and we're seeing the same mentality play out in a different form—this time with injections. Just like the show, GLP-1s promise dramatic, fast weight loss. But behind the glamor lies a dangerous truth: severe caloric restriction, significant muscle loss, and a metabolism that slows to a crawl. And when the meds stop—because of side effects, cost, or insurance changes—most people find themselves right back where they started, but worse off. This isn't about hating the drugs. It's about raising a flag. It's about questioning our obsession with extremes and asking: why are we willing to do the most drastic things for a quick fix, but so resistant to the slow, sustainable path that actually works? The truth is, real change doesn't come from the extremes. It comes from mastering the basics and building consistency—the thing no one wants to talk about because it feels too slow. But slow is the only way that lasts. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why Fit for TV is a cautionary tale for the GLP-1 craze The hidden costs of extreme approaches—whether it's reality TV or injections How muscle loss and metabolic slowdown set you up for long-term struggle Why the slow, unglamorous work is the only thing that sticks How to shift out of the “one chance” mindset and into daily, consistent action Ready to Stop Chasing Extremes? If you're tired of quick fixes that don't last, The Consistency Course is for you. This program is designed to help you finally master the basics and build the steady, sustainable habits that actually work—for life. It's not flashy, and it's not about overnight transformations. It's about consistency. It's about proving to yourself that you can stay in the game. It's about freedom from the cycle of starting over again and again.

Remember The Biggest Loser? I was obsessed. That show was appointment TV if there ever was such a thing! That show was everywhere in the 2000s—17 (!!) seasons of extreme workouts, starvation diets, and public weigh-ins packaged as “inspiration.”Netflix just released a three-part documentary about it. And while it covered some drama behind the scenes, I was more shocked about what it didn't cover:The food. Contestants were eating as little as 800 calories a day—yet the show framed it as “healthy” and barely glossed over it.The fallout. What did that kind of treatment do to contestants' self-worth, body image, and relationship with food? (Spoiler: the doc barely touched it.)The viewers. Millions of us—including me—were glued to it every week. What did that obsession do to us culturally? And what echoes of it are still shaping diet culture today?I share what I think the documentary missed, my own (kinda shocking) memories of being obsessed with the show, and the ripple effects we're still living with.Because the real story isn't just about a TV show. It's about the way we're taught to believe weight loss equals happiness—and how that belief is still sold to us in new packaging today (including by this documentary). Thanks for watching and listening!Gordon discussed plans to rebrand his podcast and shared his review of the Netflix series "Fit for TV," which examines the reality show "The Biggest Loser." He critically analyzed the show's approach to weight loss, highlighting controversies around contestant treatment and health implications while expressing sympathy for those facing health challenges. Gordon emphasized the importance of professional medical guidance for health-related decisions and encouraged viewers to pursue sustainable lifestyle changes rather than relying on entertainment-focused weight loss shows. Thanks again!

In episode 294 of Fitness & Sushi, we pull back the curtain on one of diet culture's most damaging exports: The Biggest Loser. What looked like “just TV” was actually cultural programming that rewired a generation of women to believe their worth was tied to shrinking their bodies. Contestants were pushed past the point of safety, trainers used shame and abuse as “motivation,” and viewers absorbed it all as truth. The fallout? Broken metabolisms, broken trust in our bodies, and decades of food and body obsession. In this episode — Fit for TV: How The Biggest Loser Broke Us — and How We Heal — you'll learn…

On this episode of The Adam Carolla Show, comedian Adam Yenser joins Adam in the studio! Adam kicks things off by venting about his ongoing communication struggles with everyone in his life, before discussing a frustrating encounter at Home Depot's Pro Counter, which sparks a conversation about the absurdities of everyday errands. Adam Yenser reflects on performing stand-up comedy on cruise ships and why those audiences aren't always the sharpest, while the two riff on everything from Ozempic for dogs to Andy Warhol's BMW art car worth tens of millions.Elisha Krauss stops by to cover the latest news headlines, starting with Joy Reid's controversial claim that white men are incapable of inventing anything. Her comments spark a spirited back-and-forth about race, culture, and historical achievements. The crew also weighs in on a viral Reddit debate about whether it's rude to ask for a to-go box when someone else is footing the bill, and they cap it off by reacting to Rosie O'Donnell's harsh criticism of Jay Leno after Netflix's Biggest Loser docuseries revealed his cruel behavior toward a contestant. Finally, candidate for Governor of California Leo Zacky joins the show to share his campaign platform and vision for the state. He outlines his plan to undo what he calls the destructive policies of liberal progressives, citing corruption, wasteful spending, and failed projects like the high-speed rail. Adam suggests that fixing California could be as simple as doing the opposite of Gavin Newsom, which leads to a broader discussion about racial issues, political dysfunction, and the urgent need for stronger leadership in California.Get it on.FOR MORE WITH ADAM YENSER:Show with Yakov Smirnoff – The GROVE IN ARKANSAS September 5th-6thMcCurdy's in Sarasota September 10th-14thYOUTUBE Show: The Cancelled NewsINSTAGRAM: @adamyenserTWITTER: @cleancomedian69FOR MORE WITH LEO ZACKY: Running for CA GovernorINSTAGRAM & TIKTOK: @leoszackyWEBSITE: www.leozacky.comFOR MORE WITH ELISHA KRAUSS: INSTAGRAM: @elishakraussWEBSITE: elishakrauss.com JOURNAL: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/author/elisha-krauss/Thank you for supporting our sponsors:BetOnlineIf you're 21 or older, get 25% OFF your first order + free shipping @IndaCloud with code Adam at https://inda.shop/Adam! #indacloudpodMINTMOBILE.com/ADAMoreillyauto.com/ADAMPluto.tvLIVE SHOWS: August 29 - Provo, UTAugust 31 - Torrance, CASeptember 6 - Charlotte, NCSeptember 12-13 - El Paso, TX (4 Shows)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If you watched The Biggest Loser doc and thought it was wild, you still have not heard the half of it. In this episode, Chalene spills a never before told story about a season 4 contestant who moved in with the Johnsons and what it revealed about the gamification of weight loss, reality TV rules, and those dramatic before and after photos. She connects it to the modern GLP 1 craze, influencer affiliate deals, and why rapid results can backfire physically and mentally. It is messy, it is honest, and it will change how you look at transformation culture.
