Episode 109: Michael League is the founder of Snarky Puppy, the GroundUP Music label, and the GroundUP Music Festival, and he's one of the most independent minds working in music today. He sat down with us for a deep conversation about how he built the whole thing. This isn't an interview about bass tone or gear. It's about how the entire machine actually works: how a bandleader turns a college project into a five-time Grammy-winning institution, an artist-first record label, and an international festival, all on his own terms, and all without a major label calling the shots. We trace the whole arc. League started Snarky Puppy in 2004 at the University of North Texas because he wasn't getting to play, so he built his own band. It transformed when he immersed himself in the Dallas gospel and R&B scene, absorbing the mentorship of the late Bernard Wright, the "North Star" who reshaped its feel. Out of that came the Snarky Puppy sound and the rotating cast fans call "the Fam," nearly 40 players who launched solo careers like Cory Henry's ("Lingus" is one of the most-watched instrumental performances online), Bill Laurance, Mark Lettieri, Larnell Lewis, Robert "Sput" Searight, and more. Michael pulls back the curtain: how he leads and pays this rotating collective, schedules a year out so everyone gets bandstand time, and sees himself, borrowing from Béla Fleck, as "a leader among equals." We get into why he founded GroundUP Music after growing disenchanted with the label system, how it works as an artist-friendly alternative to majors, and how the GroundUP Festival became a no-headliner gathering that's crossed the Atlantic. We also cover his life as collaborator: his partnership with David Crosby, whose late-career renaissance he helped spark; Lalah Hathaway entering the Snarky orbit; Family Dinner coming together; discovering Jacob Collier early; his band Elipsis with Antonio Sanchez and Pedrito Martinez; his love of the oud; and running it all from a 500-person Roman-era village in Spain. We talk making a living in music, sustainable careers for musicians, mentors and friends he's lost, and AI's effect on the industry. This is for musicians, bandleaders, producers, and label-builders and anyone who's wondered how to build something lasting without compromising the art. What if a puppy could bring comfort, reduce loneliness, and improve someone's quality of life, without ever needing to be fed or walked? In this inspiring episode, we explore the incredible story behind Tombot and its lifelike robotic puppy, Jennie, created to provide companionship for people living with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, mental health challenges, and others who can no longer safely care for a live pet. Tombot was inspired by founder Tom Stevens' mother, whose Alzheimer's diagnosis led to the heartbreaking decision to rehome her beloved dog, a moment that became the catalyst for creating a new kind of emotional support companion. We'll discuss:

Pat Nolan returns to discuss the science of early odor imprinting and how to properly train detection puppies from 8 weeks old. This isn't theoretical—Pat shares his exact methodology for building odor value, the two-can game foundation, common mistakes (like the one-box problem), and video evidence of puppies as young as 24 days responding to target odor. What We Cover:Why early odor imprinting creates lasting structural changes in the puppy's brainCritical periods: the window where early experiences matter mostAlan Goldblatt research: why puppies imprinted early learn faster laterStarting from birth: blowing odor in the whelping box (first 24-48 hours)The two-can game foundation (the easiest choice puppies will ever make)Progression from two cans to four cans (often in one session)Using UDC or NODA (laboratory odors that won't contaminate real-world searches)Why emotional state matters: frantic ≠ driveThe one-box mistake: teaching behavior vs. teaching odor detectionVariable interval training: the restaurant analogy that explains durationVideo proof: 24-day-old puppies seeking target odor, 6-week-old puppies choosing odor over playReasonable precision for puppies (don't ask too much too soon)Introducing distractions, blanks, and controls from day oneWhy puppies need patience, not pressureBuilding executive function skills through detection gamesPat discusses how early experiences create lasting neural pathways and why starting detection work young doesn't mean rushing—it means being thoughtful, having a plan, and understanding what success looks like at each stage.Critical Takeaway: You CAN train puppies on odor. The question is: do you know what you're doing? Have a plan. Know your benchmarks. Be aware of emotional state and developmental stages. This time on The Activity Continues, Megan and Amy rolled the dice and landed on The Holzer Files: Lambert Castle. What followed was a haunted castle, mysterious past-life connections, family secrets, psychic roadblocks, and one very persistent paranormal mystery that may or may not have been completely solved.Along the way, we also spent a surprising amount of time introducing Megan to Amy's newest foster-fail pup, discussing whether ghosts can keep secrets for over a century, and trying to decide if Lambert Castle was genuinely haunted or just really committed to being dramatic. This is the public (edited) version of this episode. And Deb says about last year's Superman movie, ‘Krypto get the toy'! if you don't know what that refers to watch the movie! Why should you send Deb Wolfe your pet questions and not AI? Because if you don't ask the exact right question to AI, specifying carefully what vetted sources to check, it defaults to general possibly out of date, often incorrect info. Swallows for example can be reached by cats if the birdhouse and nest are 8 feet off the ground, though AI told us to build it there. Contrary to the first AI answers swallows do not care about human scent and their nests can be moved successfully but it was only after specific searches to sources such as the Audubon Society and legitimate authorities that Deb found the correct answers and saved the baby birds.EPISODE NOTES: Trump Look-Alikes, Puppy Chaos & 230 Bear Attacks?!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/animal-party-dog-cat-news-animal-facts--6666735/support.

It’s been a great day. Your puppy has been an angel. And then out of nowhere, your puppy flips a switch. The biting gets more intense. They stop responding to anything you say. They’re lunging, they’re frantic, and for a second, you actually wonder if something is wrong with them. Or with you. This is puppy witching hour. And it is so much more common than you think. It usually hits in the evening, right when you’re tired, and your patience is running low. And if your puppy had a full, active day, that might actually be exactly why it’s happening. This is not a sign that your puppy is aggressive, out of control, or that you’re doing something wrong. This is a normal developmental phase, and once you understand what’s driving it, you’ll know exactly what to do and what to skip. In this episode, I talk about: What puppy witching hour actually looks like and why it’s so disorienting Why overstimulation and exhaustion trigger this kind of frantic behavior The toddler tantrum connection and what it tells us about puppy emotional development Why this is NOT the moment to discipline, redirect, or try and teach your puppy anything What your puppy actually needs in these moments (hint: it’s not more exercise) How the habits you’re building outside of these episodes will make them less frequent over time Enjoying this podcast? He goes by Puppy — but don't let the nickname fool you. At just 23 years old, Jan Goryl is helping to run job sites, operating Bobcats, and holding it down as a superintendent for Greenside while most guys his age are still figuring out what they want to do. In this episode, we get a rare look inside one of the most organized GC operations in the game, hear how Jan went from flipping houses with his dad in high school to managing multiple projects on his own, and dig into what it really takes to earn trust on a job site without waiting for someone to hand it to you. Plus — who's actually the boss at Greenside? Mike or John? Jan spills it. Don't miss this one.
What does it take to raise a field trial puppy that develops into a National Champion? In this episode, I sit down with amateur field trialer John Bacik to discuss the puppy-raising and foundation behind his remarkable success. This year, John's older Vizsla Shelby won the Vizsla Club of America's National Gun Dog Championship, while his younger dog Taylor won the Open Derby and earned her Amateur Field Championship at 17 months. What's especially interesting is that John doesn't have many of the resources people often assume are necessary for success. He doesn't own horses, an ATV, or a large training property. Instead, he relies on access to a hunting club, a loft of homing pigeons, an e-bike, and a clear vision for what he wants his dogs to become. We dive into how he structures a puppy's first year, the bird work he introduces early on, and why his approach differs from what many handlers are doing. Whether your goal is field trials, hunt tests, or simply developing a confident bird dog, you'll find practical insights into how early experiences can shape a dog's future performance. If you've ever wondered whether you need professional-level resources to produce a high-performing bird dog, this conversation may change your perspective.
