The modern zoo bears little resemblance to those you, or your parents, may remember. The cramped dirty cages that characterized the zoos of a prior era have now been replaced by more open settings that may mimic an animal's natural habitat. One of the principal architects of that transformation was longtime Columbus Zoo director Jack Hanna. He took over an aging and decrepit facility and turned it into a showplace, attracting thousands of visitors. In this 1989 interview Hanna discusses his autobiography Monkeys On The Interstate. War, genocide, human population growth, food insecurity, poaching, limited range, climate change and land use policies are just some of the reasons why mountain gorillas have been on the brink of extinction for decades. A reality made more stark given the subspecies was only "discovered" by the West as recently as 1902. Today, the Mountain Gorilla, made part of the public consciousness by the embedded research and advocacy efforts of the late Dr. Dian Fossey, and later by modern zoos and zoo media personalities like Jack Hanna, has rebounded somewhat in the beautiful central African country of Rwanda. While these conservation gains are far from guaranteed, concentrated research, public education, greater security, and well-managed ecotourism efforts have preserved mountain gorillas for now. Join Zoo Logic from the field for a real time glimpse at what trekking to see this charismatic species entails for them and for humans in a small country still coping with the legacy of genocide.  Animal Care Software Kigali Genocide Memorial

But I'm exhausted. Today the other half of my mouth had LANAP and it was less painful today, for a number of reasons, but it still wiped me out. I sat on Ben T. Davis Beach for 3 hours trying to re-center myself, but had to be home for a webinar on our data management tool. We are upgrading, and it's going to be great, but it was really hard to focus. As soon as that call ended Howie led a call with Senator Portman's staff about him being our Republican sponsor for the Big Cat Public Safety Act. His staff made it clear that they see Columbus Zoo (ie: Jack Hanna) as their “constituents”, so we are going to have to pull out all the stops to get people in Ohio to come out against cub petting. I think I'll run our new anti cub petting video to Ohioans only and create a petition for Portman's office. Going after a beloved and well financed figure, like Jack Hanna means we will have to prove our beliefs beyond a shadow of a doubt, not only to avoid a slander lawsuit, but also in order to not turn ignorant animal lovers against us when we reveal that their childhood hero was one of the most influential characters in the war against protecting wildcats from being used as pets, props and parts.  I think this film will have the Blackfish effect on the cub petting industry and no one will be able to justify ripping cubs from their moms to use this way any more.    I searched my hard drive for an image of Jack and found this 2000 photo of him and Diana McCourt.  Here is the story I wrote after we rescued 4 tigers and 2 lions from her in 2007:   It took the combined efforts of USDA, undercover agents and concerned citizens seven years to shut down Diana McCourt (aka Cziraky) and her Siberian Tiger Foundation. It wasn't until her landlords, Donnalynn and Christian Laver were able to evict her from the property that Knox County was able to seize the six cats who had been used for years as props in Diana McCourt's “tiger training” scheme.   By the end of the ordeal eye witnesses said that the cats were starving and they still have inadequate shelter from the elements.  Even though McCourt lost her USDA license to operate the tiger-tamer camp in 2000, and permanently in 2006, she still continued to charge people to come into her back yard in Gambier, OH and pet the adult lions and tigers.   The cats would often be chained down so that people could touch them or have their photos made with the cats.  To make the cats more pliable McCourt had their teeth and claws removed. (Joseph still has his canine teeth) Despite the abusive violations to their bodies and mobility, the USDA investigation included eight allegations of attacks on visitors in an 8 month period.   Most cases that 6 years or more to prosecute so animals suffer most or all of their lives waiting for help to arrive.  The only way to put an end to the suffering is to end the private possession of big cats and eliminate the USDA loophole that allows people to keep big cats if they have a $40 USDA license.  It is too easy to get and too hard to lose to provide any sort of enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. Thank goodness my enemies are such weirdos!   Photo is unrelated, other than it was at the ABC studio where Jamie and I talked about the upcoming Fur Ball gala for Big Cat Rescue.   https://www.thedailybeast.com/gun-toting-zoo-owners-in-showdown-with-peta-and-the-feds-over-baby-tigers   Gun-Toting Zoo Owners in Showdown With PETA and the Feds Over Baby Tigers   A Florida zoo featured on ‘Good Morning America' for its tiger-cub ‘swims' is facing lawsuits from PETA and state and federal agencies over its charity and treatment of the cats.   Kate Briquelet 12.26.17 12:00 AM ET   One day in October, Randy Stearns walked out to a Florida campfire, dressed in a fringed leather top like a modern-day Davy Crockett. “Hello, friends, Randy the Tiger Man,” the animal trainer greeted the camera, which was set between a teepee and totem pole out in the woods near his family's Dade City zoo.   “You can't believe a damn thing you see on the news,” the 34-year-old declared in the filmed fireside chat posted on Facebook. “Just look at me. I'm the newest Charlie Sheen. Every time you go on, there's something on about us, the park…”   Then Stearns took aim at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)—a constant topic in The Tiger Man's online videos. “Kind of like Rambo, they drew first blood,” Stearns said. “We had to go out there, defend ourselves.”   Just two months before, the wannabe Jack Hanna stood guard at the zoo's gates with a holstered weapon, joining supporters flaunting neon “PETA Kills” T-shirts. They were protesting, and allegedly delaying, a court-ordered inspection of the private, unaccredited zoo's collection of adult and baby tigers.   Stearns and his parents run Dade City's Wild Things (DCWT), a 22-acre zoo about 44 miles northeast of Tampa. The attraction has more than 300 animals: jaguars, lions, bears, lemurs, macaques, porcupines, bearded dragons, and other reptiles.   But it's known for baby tigers, deployed for photo-ops and swim sessions in the zoo's chlorinated pool. In years past, the cubs appeared on Good Morning America and Fox & Friends for the seemingly adorable gimmick.   Yet behind the footage, there's allegedly a darker side to the tiger business, according to animal-welfare advocates—one that prematurely rips cubs away from their mothers and forces them into stressful encounters with humans for profit.   According to PETA, Dade City's Wild Things is contributing to a captive tiger overpopulation crisis by continually breeding them for photo-ops and ticket sales. Once cubs grow too large for customer interactions, they're left to languish for the rest of their days in cages, or sold off to other roadside attractions and collectors of exotic animals, PETA says.   The big cats are at the center of separate lawsuits brought by PETA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which respectively allege the zoo violated the Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act over its handling of the tigers.   The zoo also faces a state lawsuit for allegedly accepting donations while not registered as a nonprofit. Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services claims the zoo used hundreds of thousands in charity funds to foot the bills for Randy Stearns' nuptials and the bankruptcy payments of his mother, Kathy.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. Letter to Mike Webber re Terry Thompson Still looking for Terry Thompson notes but found cub age / size chart Jamie did that may be helpful.   https://bigcatrescue.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Tigers2-12weeks_Blackbox.jpg   What I remember from the call was that it was approaching dusk here and I was walking across the field out by the Party House when a call came in as UNKNOWN.  The man on the other end was screaming, "I hate you but I hate them more!"   I get a lot of rabid calls from crazy cat people so I rarely take note of their ramblings unless they will give me something concrete that I can use.  He was screaming, and just about every other word was foul and abusive cursing, but he was saying that everything I had suspected about how these cubs are bred, trucked across country with no permits or record keeping, used as pay to play props and then how they would just disappear was all true.   He said he knew it was true because he had been the one trucking them around the country between doc Antle, Joe Exotic, Kathy Stearns, Mario Tabraue, Gregg Woody, (another name that I recognized at the time but have forgotten now that he's long gone out of business) and a whole bunch of names that I either didn't know, or couldn't remember because he was firing them off so fast in between curses.   He said that he trucked baby tigers and other baby wild animals from coast to coast for all of the big guys on a regular basis because they were all a network of cub pimps who kept each other stocked so that they all always had cubs to offer.  He said many of them died in transit and that the conditions on both ends were often horrific.   He said cubs that outgrew the pay to play stage were often sold or given away to anyone who would take them but that a lot of them just disappeared.  He said they often died or were killed.  He said all of the players knew that there was no enforcement of the laws and they all knew how to circumvent the authorities.   This was at a time when it was still legal to be moving cubs of any age across state lines, as long as there was a USDA license at each end of the transfer to act as the middle man for anyone who wasn't.   I remember asking him to put it in writing because I wasn't where I could write it down.  He just kept screaming that he was sick of these people and that he wanted me to shut them down.  I told him (because I tell everyone) that I can't do anything based on what he tells me; I have to have it in writing, with names, dates, particulars that I can go on to make a case.   He said I could quote him because he didn't care what any of them thought now, but I remember telling him that wasn't enough.  I couldn't just say, "this guy told me..." and have it do any good.  He may have felt his name would make a difference, but I don't remember him telling me his name, and even if he had, I probably wouldn't have known who he was, since he would not have been on my radar given the fact he'd been in jail.   I could hardly understand him because he was so angry and was going on a mile a minute.  I figured he'd email me if he was serious.  I didn't think much of it.  Even the next day, when I awoke to the news of the Zanesville Massacre, I didn't immediately connect the two events, because it was weeks, if not months, before the story was fully known.   Once I had a better understanding of what had happened in Zanesville, it left me wondering if that call had been from Terry Thompson.  I remember trying to go back through my cell phone's past calls to see if I could tell if the call was from OH but I couldn't as no information appeared on a lot of calls marked UNKNOWN CALLER.   I didn't have much reason to try and document the call at the time because all I had was hearsay and if the police had found my number on Terry's phone, I figured they would call me.  I didn't know we'd be doing a movie about it 6 years later where it would have been pertinent for me to ask if Jack Hanna was one of his clients.  I wish I had more, but sans hypnosis, this is about it.   For the cats,  Carole Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. Mom's update about Dad: Vern had a very restless and painful night but the doctor has sent a strong pain medication and Vern is resting peacefully now.  Not eating anything for two days even with encouragement from the kids.   Howie's letter to Pat Craig of Wild Animal Sanctuary On Sunday after the conference is over they have organized a meeting from noon to 5 to brainstorm about the big cat issue.  I have no idea what will come of it.  Could be waste of time, or prove productive. But at the very least it should be interesting I think because the people currently on the list (below) that I do know are some very sharp folks and a pretty unique opportunity to be in a room with people from so many organizations.  The group is a rather unwieldy size so it will be interesting to see how they conduct it.   I have pasted the info below and the contact at PAWS is Catherine Doyle.  We went to the conference last year for the first time only because we were asked to speak. Agree hard to get away.  I think you could help us add a lot of on the ground experience to the group. Maybe you could arrange with Catherine just to come for Sunday?   Info on Sunday attached with Catherine contact info. Regarding the breeding I think you make interesting points.  Couple comments:   • The bill grandfathers in all current owners so they are not objecting based on their cats being taken away.  Ohio had a couple issues that I think drove what is happening.  One is they added caging requirements.  People not meeting those is what appears to be driving the confiscations, along with some idiots just refusing to do the simple paperwork to register was also an issue.  If they had just grandfathered in the existing owners like the federal bill does without adding requirements they would not have this issue. Second, they correctly did not exempt people with USDA licenses, which as you know is a huge loophole because anyone can get a license. So I think people with USDA licenses left the state for states where a USDA license exempts them from the state rules.  The bigger mistake Ohio made in my opinion was exempting ZAA, which I believe was driven by Kasich listening to Jack Hanna. • The meaningful opposition to the bill is not from owners.  Other than Antle and Tabraue, they don't have much a following or resources to oppose. Mario Tabraue and/or Antle have engaged a lobbyist to oppose the bill, and Ringling's Feld has lobbyists opposing even though we put in language to exempt Feld.  That is the main opposition.  A bigger issue really is ZAA.  While some states have refused to exempt them from state laws, once Ohio did, it set a precedent and some other states have followed, giving them undeserved credibility.  And, I have to give them credit, they have been smart.  They hired a very experienced lobbyist who is well known to state legislators around the country, Alan Smith, as E.D.  The guy is smooth.  I heard him speak to a committee hearing in TX and he makes this sow's ear sound like a silk purse.  Plays on the "small business" sympathy and presents ZAA as the little guy's AZA.  Meantime, some AZA zoos have joined ZAA as well.  I think they do this to keep AZA off their backs - i.e. if AZA gives them a hard time, they just promote they are ZAA, and the generic public does not know any better.  But meantime, these AZA zoos joining gives ZAA even more credibility. The issue with ZAA is not that they oppose the bill. It is that they want to be exempted like AZA, claiming it is unfair to exempt AZA and not them.  To deal with this we have crafted different exemption language I can tell you more about. • Just banning breeding is interesting and worth considering.  One issue that comes to mind is enforcement  -  finding out who is breeding.  If someone has a tiger born after the bill is passed (those born before are grandfathered) how do we prove who bred it? I suppose one could try to draft language to address that by requiring records if you have a tiger so it was a serious violation not to have records of where it came from. So I think a bill that just addresses breeding is worth thinking about.  I don't think it will in any way reduce the opposition though.  Someone who is only concerned about keeping the cats they have is addressed by grandfathering. Someone who, on the other hand, wants to protect their ability to acquire cats in the future, will oppose a ban on breeding. • Regarding your concern that USFWS somehow use the law to shut down places like yours and ours, no matter what Van Norman or anyone else says, there is no way I see that happening.  First, the bill exempts sanctuaries with a definition that does not require GFAS, just a simple test I assume you would easily pass.  I.e. no breeding, buying, selling, taking offsite for exhibition. Regarding the FWS view that there should not be captive tigers, frankly I think that is a plus.  I wish USDA felt that way, i.e. recognized they don't belong in cages.  But, there is no way the bill is going to result in FWS coming in and euthanizing the animals at good sanctuaries.  First the language protects sanctuaries, second it grandfathers, but most compelling is there would be a huge public outcry.  No way I see that happening.  But, I also have no illusions that any of these points is going to change what I suspect is a deep rooted fear you have that this actually could happen.   Well, enough for now.  In hindsight would have been more efficient to talk versus type. If we discuss further maybe Skype or Facetime would be good. I'd enjoy continuing to brainstorm with you. Incidentally, although Dr. Gibbens could not meet me in person due to his travel, we did Facetime and had a great hour long chat.  People I run into speak more highly of him than I have heard about any other USDA official and I enjoyed getting to know him in the chat.   All for now - maybe more than you wanted!  :)   Howard Baskin Advisory Board Chairman Big Cat Rescue "The purity of a person's heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals."     I am thankful that Howie continues to try and bring on the voices of these recalcitrant sanctuarians.  The truth is that they have no other job options and don't want the problem to go away, but with increased transparency in this world (forced largely by us) they can't keep making up excuses to themselves and their donors.   I appreciate all the explore.org is doing for us to achieve a virtual reality experience that would end the desire to keep wild animals in cages.  I emailed again with Sumo Reality's Sean and James yesterday.  Explore.org gave us 50k to pay them to make an awesome experience.   I am using our cheap versions of their tools to try and make the most of our time filming with them, which has been set for Sept 6-8.   I'm glad there ARE cheap versions of their tools.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. What Makes Big Cat Rescue the Cat's Pajamas? Big Cat Rescue is the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated entirely to abused and abandoned big cats.  The nonprofit sanctuary began in 1992 and is home to more than 100 exotic big cats.  The cats at Big Cat Rescue are here for a variety of reasons, including:   • Abandoned by owners who wrongly thought they would make good pets • Abused by owners in order to force them to perform • Retired from performing acts • Saved from being slaughtered to make fur coats • Rescued as babies after hunters killed their mothers   Big Cat Rescue has many species of cats, many of whom are threatened, endangered or extinct now in the wild, including: Tigers, Lions, Leopards, Cougars, Bobcats, Lynx, Servals, Ocelots, Caracals   Big Cat Rescue's mission is to provide the best possible home for the animals in our care and try to stop the flow of exotic cats needing sanctuary by educating the public about the plight of the animals and supporting stronger laws to protect them.  This award winning sanctuary is situated on 55 acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa.  Our IRS Federal ID# is 59-3330495.  Our 990s are available online at GuideStar.org with a complete breakdown of how your donations are spent.   We are: • Accredited by the Global Federation of Sanctuaries • Certified by Independent Charities of America as a “Best in America Charity” • A Member of the World Society for Protection of Animals • Rated 4 Stars by Charity Navigator (their highest rating) and has the highest score of any animal based charity   The high profile good that is being done by Big Cat Rescue has inspired awards such as:   PC Magazine Names Big Cat Rescue in Top 12 Favorite Charities 2011   Big Cat Rescue, which takes in retired circus lions and tigers, also rescues other big cats from people who tried to keep them as pets, and otherwise offers sanctuary to large cats that are not eligible for release into the wild. It's focused on educating people about the unsuitability of the animals as pets, working toward passing laws against roadside zoos, and shutting down breeding programs like the exotic pet trade. They also take in injured wild cats and rehabilitate them for release. The group has a video cam set up in the sanctuary, and they regularly post videos of the big cats. The cats eat a massive amount every day, naturally, so Big Cat Rescue relies on donations and paid tour groups to support them.—Arielle Rochette  PC Magazine   Thanks to all of you who voted for Big Cat Rescue, we won the People's Choice Award at the WEDU Be More Awards!  Big Cat Rescue won against 90 contenders for the People's Choice Award. WEDU has a viewing audience that includes 16 central Florida counties. Big Cat Rescue has won this award three years in a row, validating to us that many of your share our vision.   2011 Winner in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good  Big Cat Rescue was given a beautiful Toyota Tundra for being the top voted charity during their competition week.   9/2/2011  The Tampa Bay Business Journal awarded Big Cat Rescue in 3 categories:  Best Black Tie Event  Favorite Retreat and Team Building Venue and Second Best Fundraiser   With awards and recognition like these Big Cat Rescue has enjoyed the support of celebrities from all walks of life.  They have either visited, donated, helped further our mission or have done all three!  A few you might know are:   Animal Planet's Ms. Adventure, Jane Goodall, Bill Murphy, County Commissioners, Congresswoman Castor, NY Yankees, Sue Zelenko, Arch Deal, Tim Harrison, Jethro Tull, 2008 Pageant Queens, Bo Derek, Tippi Hedren, Tampabay Bucs, Harrison Ford, The Lightning, Kate Walsh, Jim Fowler, Paul Parmar, Jack Hanna, Doug Williams, 717 South, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Harris, Hell's Kitchen, Mary Poppins, Jersey Boys, Barbara Niven, Donna Vivino of Wicked, & Chadd & Kristi   The sanctuary receives no government support and relies on its educational activities, such as tours of the facility, and the generosity of donors for support of the cats. Donations are tax deductible. Because non program expenses (i.e. administration and fundraising) are funded from tour income, 100% of your donations go directly to support the cats.   Use of technology, which not only saves time, increases our ability to track a multitude of things and improve the health checkups the cats get by updating that information on a daily basis. Big Cat Rescue could have been Zanesville    Big Cat Rescue could have been Zanesville and it could happen any where.  For years to come people are going to be asking you if the Zanesville massacre was a freak event or if it could happen again.  While the following are not stories I want you sharing, I think it is important for you to understand just how dangerous it is to allow the private sector to keep dangerous wild animals, no matter how well intended the people may be.   My previous husband Don wasn't always crazy.  He was always a bit eccentric, thus the passion for collecting boats, planes and later big cats; but it wasn't until 1997 that he showed signs of clear dementia and was finally diagnosed as being bi-polar.  Sundari was born in 1996 and Don sneaked her off the property one day to take her out to yard sales with him to show off.  The reason people get big cats is because they want to show off.  Sundari never would walk on a leash, but rather did a great impression of the Winnie the Pooh character, Tigger, as she bounced endlessly and often over his head, as he would try to walk her.  Apparently he grew tired of her pouncing, biting and flipping out and put her in the van while he walked the neighborhood yard sale.   He didn't want her to get hot though, so he left the windows down.  It kind of gives you a sense for just how crazy he had become that he thought a full grown leopard would just sit in the van with the windows down.  I was at home and started getting calls from people saying there was a leopard running loose in their neighborhood.  I didn't know Don had taken her off property so I thought the first caller was hallucinating, but when there was a pattern in the same neighborhood, I began to wonder what the heck was going on.  Somehow Don managed to recapture her and came home and told me all about their adventures for the day and the calls began to make sense.   I began locking all of the dangerous cat cages.  It may interest you to know that there is still no state or federal requirement that there be locks on cages.  Don had a fit that I was locking him out of the cages so I made a HUGE ring of keys for him that really didn't open anything.  The ring was bigger than the one I carry now and I explained to him that every cage had to have a different key.  What I was counting on was that if he began trying to unlock a cage one of the volunteers, staff or I would catch him and divert his attention to something else.  He was obviously a danger to himself, to the cats and to the public.   This worked for a while, but sometimes he would get frustrated and just take bolt cutters to the cage.  You have surely noticed that there are squares cut out, all over the cages, that are big enough for a person to fit through, that have since been patched, but many of these were Don's handiwork.  Although I was taking him to specialists and trying to figure out what was wrong with him, the fact is that it is almost impossible to protect someone from their own mental deterioration unless they do something criminal.  Back in 1997 it wasn't criminal to take your leopard out for a walk in a neighborhood on a leash.  Any of you who are caring for elderly parents know how hard it was to get their car keys away from them.  Imagine if they owned 100+ dangerous predators how hard it would be to keep them out of trouble.   The fact of the matter is that the only people who hoard dangerous animals in their back yards are those who aren't normal to begin with.  When they finally go off the deep end tragedies like Zanesville are inevitable.  The only way to prevent such travesties is to ban the private possession of wild animals outside of accredited zoos and accredited sanctuaries so that there is someone, other than the government, making sure that things don't get out of hand.   Photo circa 1996 of Carole holding Sundari Leopard.  We do not display photos of people touching cats after 2004. Zanesville Timeline 10/18/2011, Terry Thompson, out of jail 2 weeks, set free 56 lions, tigers, bears, cougars, wolves and other wild animals.  Terry cut the doors off the cages, committed suicide, and his apparent goal was to wreak as much havoc as possible with his last actions. His horrific act of violence against the animals, and the community, turned out to be a catalyst for change.  Animal protection groups had been trying for years to ban the private possession of big cats.   1/6/2011 Ohio's outgoing Gov. Strickland passed emergency executive order to require registration of dangerous wild animals and ban criminals from possessing them.   3/2011 Incoming Gov. Kasich allowed the order to expire   7/25/2011 IFAW hosted 11 orgs, 18 million supporters, to come up with a 3 prong approach to ending the big cat crisis.   • Close USFWS generic tiger loophole • Cause USDA to end cub handling due to it being a breach of the Animal Welfare Act • Federal ban on private possession and cub handling   The 11 org coalition, which included IFAW, HSUS, Born Free & Big Cat Rescue, knew that the next major tragedy involving big cats was just right around the corner, because in our world it's pretty common place news.   10/18/11  When law enforcement had to find and kill 18 tigers, 17 lions, 8 bears, 3 cougars, 2 wolves, & 2 monkeys it was a 24 hour long blood bath that came to be known around the world as The Zanesville Massacre.  I'm pretty sure the first time that phrase was used was on our website.  No matter where you go, when you say "Zanesville Massacre” people know the story.  What made it so memorable, was that people just could not believe that it could be legal to privately own such dangerous animals.   So why is it still legal?  Celebrities have a lot of power in Washington and there are several people who have made their fortunes and found their fame by taking cute baby lions, tigers, snow leopards and other wild animals onto talk shows.  Some of the most well known, like Jack Hanna claim to be there with babies from the Columbus Zoo, but most of those babies are actually bred by private owners for the pay to play trade.   Those breeders would be banned under the Federal law we lobby for.  The celebrities are doing all they can to thwart our progress.  Media has hampered change by pandering to the romantic notion that you can touch the wild and be held out as a “Lion Whisper”.   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. Robert Mueller – How To Increase Your Dog’s Lifespan, Prevent Disease & Save Money By Feeding Your Dog The BARF Diet!

Today we had a fascinating conversation with Robert Mueller. Robert is the author of a book called Living Enzymes: The World's Best Kept Pet Food Secret and he's an expert in the BARF (biologically appropriate raw food diet) diet for dogs and even other animals as well. We talked about a lot of fascinating information. One of the things that really stuck out to me during the show was just how bad conventional dog food is. Robert mentioned that when dogs die they get put to sleep usually using some kind of drug (I know because when I was in high school I worked at a vet clinic and had to assist the doctor in putting down dogs from time to time). He's one of the brains behind http://www.barfworld.com which is a company that provides the healthiest dog food on the planet. This drug (along with other chemicals like vaccinations, antibiotics and anesthesia if they've ever had surgery) get locked into their tissues and never really leave their bodies. What's particularly disturbing though is that these dogs that get killed because they're filled with cancer or some other disease get sent to the rendering plant where they get added to dog food! So dog's are essentially eating themselves when you buy them conventional dog food. They do the same thing with road kill that's been lying in the streets when rodents get hit by cars. They'll take these animals and add them to the rendering plant. Not to mention how disgusting all that is, but they'll typically sell this "food" in metal containers that leach heavy metals into the food. It's disgusting. And we wonder why our animals are getting cancer and other diseases. I believe you could add 5 or more happy and active (not to mention disease free and vet free) years to your dog's life if you were to feed them correctly as early as possible and giving them enough walks each day for exercise. I like to feed Maggie large amounts of spring water when we have it or alkaline water we get from Carlsbad. I never feed her tap water unless it's filtered using our water filter from Friends of Water (listen to our interview with the owner Timothy Hickey here). It's important that our furry little friends are not drinking water that contains fluoride or calcium in it. I would highly recommend looking into the BARF diet. It contains the perfect calcium to phosphorus ratio so your dog has strong bones and a great immune system. It has the right balance of organic, free range muscle meats, organ meats and bones to create the perfect PH balance in your dog's body. They come in perfect little frozen patties that your dog will love. We're going to be starting Maggie on a 90 program doing this BARF diet and see how she goes. We'll have Robert Mueller on again after to see how the expirement goes and how much she improves. Right now we feed her clean water and she already eats a raw food diet and gets about 3 20 minute walks per day. So she's pretty healthy but we want to see how healthy she can get. In the podcast today Melanie Boylan and Tonya Fitzpatrick discuss what makes World Footprints a social impact company. World Footprints is a heart-centered Social Impact travel media company where travelers of conscience and culture can come for information, education and inspiration in the travel space. From its inception in 2007, World Footprints has revealed untold narratives and has explored places that push beyond our comfort zones by opening a window to the world through powerful written and audio storytelling. It is through these stories that World Footprints helps people overcome their fears about traveling the world. World Footprints was founded by Tonya & Ian Fitzpatrick, two media-savvy lawyers who have merged their passion for meaningful travel and their support for social justice. The multi award-winning World Footprints podcast is the cornerstone of the socially conscious company. World Footprints continues to evolve but it is unique in its consistent illumination of our common humanity. The steadfast belief in our shared humanity is expressed in the foundational principle of Ubuntu, a Zulu word that translates “I am because we are” and also the Hindu phrase Tat tvam asi – “I see the other in myself and myself in others”. The philosophy of unity guides the impactful stories that are found throughout the World Footprints multimedia platform including the website, podcast and YouTube channel. World Footprints offers a space for all voices to be heard and for fuller narratives to be shared even if they are uncomfortable because of the value those stories offer for growth and cross-cultural understanding. In addition to the philosophical mission there are two prevailing messages that are amplified through World Footprints: the importance of ground-truthing–(finding your own truth about people and places in order to debunk misinformed opinions) and the transformative power of travel. Throughout its history, World Footprints has partnered with a number of non-profit and advocacy groups like the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking. It has also welcomed world figures, thought leaders and celebrities, such as Maya Angelou, Jack Hanna, Bobby Kennedy, Jr., Ken Burns, chef Cat Cora and others to share unique insights on places and people. Travel, culture, history and social impact are foundational to World Footprints.
