Years ago my pastor in Michigan told me that he sent to India to a preacher there for an anointed cloth for his grandson who had a growth on his leg. The cloth arrived by mail from India and they prayed and applied the cloth to the boy's leg. Right away there appeared a ring around the growth and in a few days the growth fell off the boy's leg. I had noticed great faith also in Jamaica when I went there later. A few years ago I became friends with Brother Samuel in India. Who asked me if I could hold Bible classes for him and several village pastor friends once a month by video call. This is part of the second lesson I helped with, on healing and prayer cloths.Two songs are included, Prayer Bells of Heaven and Send the Light.These brothers and sisters are in extreme poverty and are in need of help. I have the prayer cloths that we prayed over if there is a need beyond the needs I already know about.

This week we were privileged to welcome Brother Samuel to Top Church. Sam is a Franciscan friar who currently lives in a Friary in East London. He was with us to share talk about why we share ashes on Ash Wednesday and he also distributed ashes with us as part of the service.

What is life like for nuns and monks today? With a lack of new blood coming into the traditional monasteries and convents, Bishop Martin Shaw supports some of these aging communities in their painful final days as they are forced to leave their homes. His role as an official visitor, is also to receive the vows of any new nuns and monks joining religious orders, and to hear the concerns and complaints from each community. Sister Giovanna, Sister Clare and Brother Samuel, who are all from different religious communities, recount what life is like for them today. They also share their experiences of dedication over the years - from that first day in the chapel and hearing Gregorian Chant to outside keeping bees and pigs in the orchard, from teaching young children in inner cities to supporting the bereaved in hospitals. We get a glimpse of life in this unique and rarefied world of devotion and commitment, and hear how these communities have changed over the decades. Bishop Shaw has also witnessed these changes, but although monastic life as it has traditionally been lived is unlikely to survive, there are signs of new religious life beginning to emerge within the Church. Brother “Samuel” leads a media ministry in Pakistan, reaching out to Muslims with the gospel of Christ. It isn’t always a popular message: Samuel has been threatened, his staff has been beaten and his office has been attacked. Charges under Pakistan’s blasphemy law are a constant threat. But God is at work! Muslims are accessing ministry resources and meeting Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Listen as Samuel shares the challenges of serving Christ in Pakistan—“anything can happen at any time”—and how he constantly re-commits himself and his family to the ministry that God has called them to, whatever the cost may be. In spite of the danger, Samuel says it a privilege and joy to see God standing with them and see Muslims coming to faith in Christ.
