California's mental health conservatorship system has a 57% failure rate. More than half of the people released from conservatorships deteriorate afterward. The state's response? Follow-up care is voluntary.Nick Reiner was under a court-ordered LPS conservatorship in 2020. A judge found him gravely disabled. A licensed fiduciary named Steven Baer was appointed to oversee his treatment. He could be forced to take psychiatric medication. He could be placed in a locked facility against his will. The system intervened.Then the conservatorship expired in 2021. It wasn't renewed. And for four years, no one with legal authority was watching.On True Crime Today, we expose the seven structural failures built into California's conservatorship law. The "grave disability" threshold that disqualifies people whose families provide support. The appellate court ruling that "probabilistic pessimism"—concern about future danger—isn't grounds for intervention. The automatic one-year termination with no transition plan. The 2020 state audit showing only 9% of discharged patients get connected to ongoing care. The fact that families cannot petition for conservatorships or force renewals.Sources say Nick's medication was changed approximately one month before December 14th. Sources say he became agitated, erratic, suffered a "complete break from reality." Without a conservatorship in place, there was nothing anyone could legally do.The Reiners had money, connections, and access to the best treatment available. They got the conservatorship. They got the professional oversight. The Adrian Gonzales trial just took a devastating turn. Texas Rangers presented a 3D animation to jurors showing the former Uvalde CISD officer's movements during the Robb Elementary shooting, and what it allegedly reveals is damning. According to investigators, Gonzales arrived on scene before the gunman entered the building, drove past the shooter in the parking lot, parked his vehicle, radioed "shots fired," and then stood outside for approximately three minutes and forty seconds while 117 rounds were fired inside the fourth grade wing.Gonzales has pleaded not guilty to 29 counts of child endangerment. His defense attorney Nico LaHood is mounting an aggressive counter-strategy, pointing to other officers who also failed to engage. During tense cross-examination, LaHood got Lieutenant Nick Hill to admit that Officer Juan Saucedo had an AR-15, saw the shooter, and didn't fire. Three other patrol cars drove away from the school while shots rang out inside. LaHood's argument: why is Gonzales the only one on trial?The courtroom has been filled with raw emotion. Velma Duran, sister of murdered teacher Irma Garcia, was removed after an outburst. Teacher's aide Melodye Flores testified she told Gonzales multiple times where the gunman was going. Her words: "He just stayed there." And Jennifer Garcia shared how her nine-year-old daughter Eliana wanted to come home early that day but stayed for a pizza party. She would have turned ten eleven days later.This is the second time in American history a police officer has faced charges for inaction during a school shooting. Edwards described how Zinoviev issued a chilling warning: “‘You don't know who you're messing with and you need to be really careful. You are on Jeffrey's radar… you don't want to be on Jeffrey's radar',” to which Edwards asked, “Who am I messing with?” Zinoviev quietly responded with three letters: “C‑I‑A.”Digging deeper, Palmeri reports that, according to Edwards, Zinoviev said that in 2008—while Epstein was serving his work‑release sentence—he was sent to the CIA headquarters in Virginia.
