In this week's episode we consider the Labour Party conference and what it all meant. We reflect on the odd goings on, like Labour Home Secretery Shabana Mahmood saying her political hero is Margaret Thatcher and we tackle Kier Starmer's conference speach. With Labour and Reform facing off on migration policy and plans for so called Brit Card compulsory ID Cards we look at what is motivating these policies and whether this is the type of country that you'd want to live in.We also ponder some interesting history that saw the archives of Scotland sink in a boat in the 17th century off the Northumbrian coast with no report very little knowledge or understanding of this event in Scottish consciousness.LinksEstonia The Baltic Tiger - YouTubeA Bleather O'Books  - TicketsSunday, November 2 · 10:30 - 11:30am (Doors at 10:15am)Robertson Room, Robert Burns Birthplace MuseumMurdoch's Lone Alloway KA7 4PQHow Cromwell and Edward I robbed Scotland of centuries of its historyhttps://www.thenational.scot/news/17300143.cromwell-edward-robbed-scotland-centuries-history/Lost to the Waveshttps://blog.historicenvironment.scot/2020/08/stormy-past/ ★ Support this podcast ★

First, we wrestle with Britain's latest flirtation with national ID cards — a grand plan that looks less like efficiency and more like Big Brother with a clipboard. Why should the average bloke need a barcode to buy a sandwich, when freedom is supposed to be stitched into the fabric of the nation? Then, across the Atlantic, we dip into the bizarre saga of Graceland. Fraudsters tried to swipe Elvis Presley's home with forged paperwork. Yes, really. The King's estate nearly went under the hammer, but the con unraveled faster than a karaoke wig. Lies may glitter for a moment, but truth eventually smashes through like a drum solo. Finally, we dust off the archaeology desk — scientists claim a million-year-old skull has been found, nudging human evolution further back in time. Headlines shout about ancestors with funny foreheads, but the real point is this: theories change, God's truth doesn't. Humanity is still created in His image, whether the skulls are dated one hundred years or a million. Mark has a poem, Pete brings the Bible, and together we serve up perspective with punch.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.

Fevzi Turkalp, the Gadget Detective, joins Clive Bull on LBC to discuss the announcement by the UK government of the introduction of a compulsory smartphone based digital ID, which could be required when working, renting a property, and a lot more. What information will the ID store, what form will it take, who would have access, and do we want so much information about us centrally stored with the ever present danger of the database being hacked, and is it an unwarranted intrusion on our privacy and security? Questions raised include - What happens if you lose your smartphone that contains the ID app? - What if you don't own or want a smartphone? - What if future governments have more authoritarian intentions? - What if you're homeless? - Is this a creeping Big Brother? - Are there other motives to these IDs? - Can we minimise the data we currently share? The Labour machine has whirred into gear to try and contain a certain Northern mayor's mischievous interventions this week, by announcing a big controversial piece of policy. The news that ID cards – Tony Blair's pet project – will be introduced has splashed all the front pages, demoting Andy Burnham to yesterday's news. It's a policy with broad public support, but with a passionate minority opposition including the leaders of the other major parties. The fact that it is being rebranded as a ‘Brit card' with the aim of tackling the migration crisis has also ruffled a few feathers. Will it work politically? And, more importantly, will it work in practice? Lucy Dunn speaks to Tim Shipman and James Heale. Produced by Oscar Edmondson. Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. In the penultimate episode of this season of Data Bytes, we look at how digital identity provisions will reshape the world as we know it. Physical ID cards may soon be a thing of the past, and that could have huge implications for society and businesses. Host Rhiannon Webster is joined by Ashurst colleague Fiona Ghosh to explain how digital IDs are swiftly changing how we live and work. Together, they discuss how the Data (Use and Access) Act creates a regulatory framework for digital identity to operate under government oversight. Rhiannon offers an overview of the Act’s provisions including the statutory trust framework, supplementary codes and a new register of digital verification service providers. She also discusses the profound security implications of digital ID and potential multi-regulation scenarios where financial services firms might have to report breaches to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) and the new Office for Digital Identity And Attributes. Fiona points out that, “the main impact of digital ID will be the enablement for citizens to access services in multidisciplinary ways”. For example, citizens will be able to choose how to access their benefits or records – physically or electronically. And she raises questions around resilience when businesses move to the cloud and the level of expectation (and trust) that citizens now place in digital wallets and ID.To listen to this and subscribe to future Data Bytes episodes, search for “Ashurst Legal Outlook” on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favourite podcast player. Two Mystery ID Cards Found in Bryan Kohberger's Glovebox — FBI Breaks Down Why In Bryan Kohberger's car — meticulously cleaned and disassembled for forensic examination — investigators still found something he left behind: two ID cards belonging to women who were not among his murder victims. Both women are still alive, and it's possible they have no idea their identification ever ended up in Kohberger's possession. Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke joins Hidden Killers to break down what this could mean. Were these IDs simply forgotten during cleaning? Or were they deliberately kept as trophies, mementos, or tools for intimidation? Kohberger's past includes suspected break-ins, petty theft, and a pattern of vengeful behavior toward women, making the latter theory harder to dismiss. Dreeke explains how offenders often compartmentalize their thinking — meticulously removing anything linked to the main crime while ignoring, or even protecting, other incriminating items they don't perceive as relevant. This “stovepipe” thinking could explain why the IDs remained, despite his obsessive cleaning. But the discovery also raises bigger questions. Were these IDs linked to earlier crimes? Could they point to unreported victims or incidents in Kohberger's past? And if he kept these in his glovebox, were there other trophies or stolen items hidden elsewhere? This episode explores the psychological side of trophy keeping, the escalation from smaller acts to violent crime, and how seemingly minor evidence can open entirely new investigative paths. #BryanKohberger #Idaho4 #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #FBIProfiler #Evidence #CrimeNews #TrophyKiller #CriminalPsychology #IdahoMurders Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The government is considering introducing digital ID cards as a way to curb illegal immigration and improve the administration of public services. But is it a good idea? Blunkett oversaw the introduction of identity cards under New Labour—before they were scrapped by the Tory-Lib Dem coalition—and thinks they could have a place. One of the most complex, and divisive, issues in modern politics is making a return under this government; ID cards. Advocates describe it as a potential way to improve public services, tackle illegal migration and modernise the state, but it remains intensely controversial, due to significant concerns over privacy, data security and equality. To discuss those issues host Alain Tolhurst is joined by Jake Richards, Labour MP for Rother Valley, Kirsty Innes, director of technology at the think tank Labour Together, Rebecca Vincent, interim director at the campaign group Big Brother Watch, and James Baker, campaigns manager at the Open Rights Group. My friend and former elementary school teacher, Kirsten Tulsian, found herself sitting on the floor of her classroom one night with her head in her hands and breaking down in tears. Feeling overwhelmed, overworked and underappreciated, she realized that she just couldn't keep going on this way. Although heartbroken about what that might mean for the kids she taught and loved, Kirsten knew if something didn't change, she wouldn't be able to continue to be the kind of teacher her students needed and deserved.Kirsten went on to write a children's book, “Sprinkle Your Sparkles” and also combined two of her passions to create Kirsten's Kaboodle - an online shop chock full of fun and effective resources for elementary educators. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking with this former educator and counselor who's always been a fierce advocate for little kids. From this passion came her newest venture, Inner Child ID Cards (aka: Self-Love Licenses) - where she advocates for the “inner child” in all of us.These cards are a fun way for adolescents and adults to honor, care for and support that “little kid” that still lives inside each of us.Plus they make fantastic personalized gifts, too!
