Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 2ú lá de mí Bealtaine, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1975 d'éalaigh príosúnaigh as a phríosún ach ní raibh aon ádh acu ag Punchestown. I 1997 tháinig an nuacht amach go mbeadh méadú de 1% sna rátaí morgáiste de bharr go raibh méadú sna rátaí sna bainc. I 1988 bhí Stockton's Wing ag canadh ag an Chaisleán Friary agus Dolores Keane ag Kennedy's, roinnt de na amhránaí ag canadh timpeall an chontae. I 1996 chaith Anne O'Hara bláthfhleasc don chéad uair – tháinig sí abhaile le curadh domhanda ag an World Floral Show sa Nua-Shéalainn. Sin George Michael le A Different Corner – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1986. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1981 chuaigh Sheena Easton chuig uimhir a haon I Meiriceá lena amhrán Morning Train (9 to 5). Bhí sí ann ar feadh dhá sheachtain agus d'athraigh sí an teideal den amhrán de bharr gur tháinig Dolly Parton amach leis a amhrán 9 to 5 sa bhliain chéanna. I 2006 tháinig Keith Richards ó The Rolling Stones amach as a ospidéal sa Nua-Shéalainn de bharr go bhfuair sé comhtholgadh beag nuair a thit sé amach as crann nuair a bhí sé I Fiji. Chuaigh sé chuig an ospidéal I héileacaptar agus fuair sé scanadh ar a inchinn. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh aisteoir Dwayne Johnson I Meiriceá I 1972 agus rugadh amhránaí Lily Allen sa Bhreatain ar an lá seo I 1985 agus seo chuid de a amhrán. Beidh mé ar ais libh an tseachtain seo chugainn le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 2nd of May, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1975: an escaped prisoners luck ran out at punchestown races yesterday. 1997: an increase of one percent in bank and mortgage rates was threatened last night after a shock rise in central bank rates. 1988 – Stockton's Wing at Friary Castle and Dolores Keane in Kennedy's at Puckane were some of the musicians gearing up for gigs in the county. 1996 - Having fashioned a garland competitively for only the first time, Nenagh flower arranger ANNE O'HARA from Millview, Ballygraigue Road, arrived back home o having been crowned world champion at the World Floral Show in Wellington, New Zealand. That was George Michael with A Different Corner – the biggest song on this day in 1986. Onto music news on this day In 1981 Scottish singer Sheena Easton started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Morning Train (9 to 5)'. The title of the song was changed to avoid any confusion with the Dolly Parton hit '9 to 5', in the same year. 2006 Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was released from hospital in New Zealand after the 62 year-old suffered "mild concussion" when he fell out of a coconut tree while on holiday in Fiji. He was airlifted to Auckland's Ascot Hospital for observation, where he underwent a brain scan. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – actor Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was born in America in 1972 and singer Lily Allen was born in th UK on this day in 1983 and this is one of her songs. I'll be back with you next week with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

Your Podcast Master, Andrew Lambert, brought another special guest into the studio for our February episode of Mind Yo Business. Not only is Friar Gabriel a Brother in the Fransican Church, he likes to shred on his skateboard and had a lot to share with us! Friar Gabriel, formerly known as Brandon, was born in New Hampshire and was raised Catholic with his brothers and sisters both there and, later, in Virginia Beach. He recalls the moment he found skateboarding “at the bottom of a mountain on a gravel driveway”. Since taking his vows and becoming a Franciscan Friar of the Immaculate (FFI), he has devoted his time to traveling the country and sharing the gospel message through skateboarding. He shares a story about his time in Australia when he steered a young man in the right direction, he discusses two Bloomington skater extraordinaires who he sees as elevating the sport, and Andrew and Brother Gabriel discuss the stereotypes surrounding skate culture and how Brother Gabriel is working to change that. This episode begins in a unique way and ends with a typical discussion of Lambert Rolls. Brother Gabriel gives Lambert Cafe a seal of approval for throwing bread at patrons. The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1772 Birth of Friedrich von Hardenberg (pen name Novalis ("NO-vol-liss")), the German romantic poet-philosopher. Friedrich's pen name, Novalis, was a nod to his 12th-century farming ancestors who called themselves the Novali, which translates to "people who cultivate new land," - and his first work under his pen name was Blüthenstaub (Pollen). In the book, Novalis advised his artistic friends to be prolific in their work, writing, Friends, the soil is poor, we must scatter seed abundantly for even a moderate harvest. Novalis is most remembered for his unfinished work Henry von Ofterdingen: A Romance. This work resulted in a nickname for Novalis as the poet of the blue flower. Henry von Ofterdingen was a fabled poet from the 13th century. In Novalis's story, his romantic yearning is symbolized by his love for a blue flower, which Novalis later revealed was inspired by a heliotrope. For centuries, Novalis has been seen primarily as a love-struck poet who mourned the death of his first love, Sophie, only to be reunited with her in heaven after he, too, succumbed to the white plague or tuberculosis. Today, blue flowers remain a symbol of desire and a striving for the unreachable. They also represent humanity's connection with nature - a rare and fragile relationship. Today, blue flowers remain among gardeners' most coveted color of blossoms - as in the Himalayan blue poppy, the delphinium, the cornflower, and the forget-me-not. In Henry von Offerdingen, Novalis wrote, I care not for wealth and riches. But that blue flower I do long to see; it haunts me and I can think and dream of nothing else... 1853 Frederick Arther Walton, English nurseryman, cactus collector, and jeweler. Born in Birmingham, Frederick owned one of the largest private cactus collections in England, and he started a cactus nursery called The Friary. He also created and edited The Cactus Journal - a monthly journal devoted exclusively to cacti and other succulent plants, which ran for 24 issues. Frederick also founded the first cactus society in England. In 1899, he traveled to America and Mexico to collect cactus, and he wrote, Possessing one of the largest collections in England, I decided to go to the native home of the cactus – California, Arizona, and Mexico. so on January 7th, 1899, I left Liverpool Fort New York; then I went to the great city of St Louis where there is a cactus a society and a very good collection of cacti in the Botanical Gardens. After spending a few pleasant days at St Louis I took the train to Kansas City… then through New Mexico and arrived at San Bernardino California where I met Andrew Halstead Alverson a very enthusiastic Cactus collector. He took me out into the desert, and for the first time in my life, I was in the midst of wild cacti. The trip was the adventure of a lifetime for Frederick. He battled snakes, scorpions, pumas, centipedes, and the harsh desert sun in an exploration of cactus country covering over 20,000 miles in the western hemisphere. In January 1900, for unknown reasons, Frederick's cactus journal and the cactus society abruptly ended. There was a mention in the final issues of The Cactus Journal that he was exploring the creation of a daffodil journal - but it was never printed. At the turn of the century, European gardeners outside of Germany had no real interest in cactus or succulents - that interest wouldn't be rekindled until the 1930s. And so, in 1905, Frederick's health was waning, and he sold his nursery. Frederick died in 1922. 1858 On this day, the poet, teacher, abolitionist, and writer Charlotte Forten started writing her poem called, To a Beloved Friend. Charlotte was friends with Sarah Cassey Smith and had lived with the Smith family while attending school. In 1856, Charlotte became Salem State's first African American graduate. Sarah and Charlotte shared a love for all flowers. The young women made and received May baskets in the springtime, and they both enjoyed spring nosegays or little bouquets. Once when Charlotte's teacher gave her a little bouquet, Charlotte wrote in her diary. Your voiceless lips, dear flowers, are living preachers. The day before this day, in 1858 (May 1st), Charlotte found herself homesick for Salem. She disliked the noisy city life in Philadelphia, and she also confronted more significant restrictions on her activities as an African American in the City of Brotherly Love. She had noted in her diary that she had been "refused at two ice cream salons." And so, when Sarah's bouquet arrived on May 1st, Charlotte quickly interpreted the meaning of each flower according to floriography or the language of flowers - a common way for people to communicate in the 1800s. Sarah's handpicked Mayflowers symbolized welcome. The little Violets represented constant friendship, and the delicate Columbine was a reference to separation. The message of friendship and love across the miles of separation was received loud and clear. From her diary, we know the bouquet lifted Charlotte's mood and inspired Charlotte's poem called To a Beloved Friend. 1923 On this day, Robert Frost's poem "Our Singing Strength" was first published in the New Republic. The poem begins, It snowed in spring on earth so dry and warm The flakes could find no landing place to form. Hordes spent themselves to make it wet and cold, And still they failed of any lasting hold. They made no white impression on the black. They disappeared as if earth sent them back. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Land Gardeners by Bridget Elworth and Henrietta Courtauld This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Cut Flowers. Let me begin by setting the table for you - because that's precisely the cover of this book. There's a table with a beautiful tablecloth and then a variety of porcelain vases on the table, all of different sizes and shapes. Behind that is a gallery of botanical art. Resting on the table are cut tulips, all kinds of tulips. And, then in two of the vases are different arrangements of these beautiful, fresh-picked tulips. It's just an absolutely stunning cover. The Land Gardeners is a five-star book on Amazon as well. Together, Bridget and Henrietta are English gardeners, and they established a firm that they call Land Gardeners. So, the book references their work - as well as their shared passion - which is, of course, flowers. In the real world, The Land Gardeners is a cut flower operation. The book, The Land Gardeners, provides everything you need to know to set up your own cut flower garden - and then everything that comes after, including gathering the flowers, even arranging. Vogue was a fan of this book, saying, A peak into their blossom-filled world. The book reads like a meander through their tumbling English gardens. The Sunday Times wrote, One of the Best Gardening Books of the Year. And The Oregonian said, Packed with ideas and inspiration, passion and beauty... This large-size, hardcover book is filled with stellar photographs that will also inspire you to display a vase filled with flowers you grew and arranged yourself. This book is a big one. It's almost five pounds, 391 pages of cut flowers from the garden to the vase. You can get a copy of The Land Gardeners by Bridget Elworthy and Henrietta Courtauld and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $23. Botanic Spark 1893 Birth of Norman Bor, Irish botanist and explorer. He was awarded the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society in 1962 and served as an Assistant Director of Kew. His wife, Eleanor, accompanied him to Assam and Tibet and then wrote a fabulous book about the adventure called The Adventures of a Botanist's Wife - a book I own multiple copies of - it's a favorite of mine. In 1952, a newspaper in Melbourne, Australia, featured Eleanor's book in an article called "On Top of the World." Here's an excerpt: Mrs. Bor had expected to share exciting plant discoveries and, at least, to give her name to a rare orchid. Instead, she found her husband was a specialist in grasses, and it was a new species of grass - extremely rare - but, to her, looking no more than a "mangy bit of fur" that finally bore her name. Once [ on a mountain] stepping from mist and snow, they saw below them... a blaze of rhododendrons and magnolias, and In their camp that night burned rhododendron logs. Their mountain trips were often dangerous... The Rupa bridge was especially terrifying, with only strands of cane for a foothold and tall hoops set a yard apart for the hands to grip. More menacing than cane bridges and cliff tracks were the insects. Wild animals were not alarming, but the hornets, centipedes, horse flies, dam dims, and above all, the leeches made camping in the jungle foothills a nightmare. One reviewer wrote: Here is a story told with the charm and simplicity of a life spent in the foothills of the Himalayas where Eleanor Bor and her botanist husband tramp through jungled terrain establishing friendly relations with hill tribes and villagers, discovering the enchantments of mysterious undergrowth and carrying with them the domestic problems of household pets and family happenings. Their years in the jungle...are those of a true traveler. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Finally, there really is some light at the end of this bleak, year-long tunnel. The Covid -19 vaccines are here and the rollout is underway. The over-80's were the first recipients of the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine, and they made their feelings on any controversy surrounding the vaccine known, by voting with their feet. There was an unprecedented 100 percent turnout at Dr Francis O'Hagan's Friary surgery in Armagh, and she says there was a joyous and celebratory atmosphere amongst her patients and a sense of freedom returned. For this episode of Armagh I's podcast, proudly sponsored by Blackhill Energy, we spoke to Dr O'Hagan about the pressures of the past year, which have never been worse than they are right now for frontline staff.
Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Lectionary: 451All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is St. Pio of PietrelcinaOn Sept. 23, the Catholic Church remembers the Italian Franciscan priest St. Pio of Petrelcina, better known as Padre Pio and known for his suffering, humility and miracles. The man later known by these names was originally named Francesco Forgione, born to his parents Grazio and Maria in 1887. His parents had seven children, two of whom died in infancy. They taught the five surviving children to live their faith through daily Mass, family prayer of the rosary, and regular acts of penance. Francesco had already decided at a young age to dedicate his entire life to God. At age 10, he felt inspired by the example of a young Capuchin Franciscan, and told his parents: I want to be a friar with a beard. Francescos father spent time in America, working to finance his sons education so he could enter the religious life. On Jan. 22, 1903, Francesco donned the Franciscan habit for the first time. He took the new name Pio, a modernized Italian form of Pius, in honor of Pope St. Pius V. He made his solemn vows four years later, and received priestly ordination in the summer of 1910. Shortly after, he first received the Stigmata Christs wounds, present in his own flesh.Along with these mystical but real wounds, Padre Pio also suffered health problems that forced him to live apart from his Franciscan community for the first six years of his priesthood. By 1916 he managed to re-enter community life at the Friary of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he lived until his death. He handled many duties as a spiritual director and teacher, covering for brothers drafted into World War I.During 1917 and 1918, Padre Pio himself briefly served in a medical unit of the Italian army. He later offered himself as a spiritual victim for an end to the war, accepting suffering as a form of prayer for peace. Once again, he received the wounds of Christ on his body. They would remain with him for 50 years, through a succession of global conflicts. Against his own wishes, the friars reputation for holiness, and attending miracles, began to attract huge crowds. Some Church officials, however, denounced the priest and had him banned from public ministry in 1931. Pope Pius XI ended the ban two years later, and his successor Pius XII encouraged pilgrimages to Padre Pios friary.Known for patient suffering, fervent prayer, and compassionate spiritual guidance, Padre Pio also lent his efforts to the establishment of a major hospital, the Home to Relieve Suffering. Padre Pio died in 1968, and was declared a saint in 2002. Three years after his death, Pope Paul VI marveled at his simple and holy life in an address to the Capuchin Order.A worldwide following gathered around him ... because he said Mass humbly, heard confessions from dawn to dusk and was it is not easy to say it one who bore the wounds of our Lord, Pope Paul explained. He was a man of prayer and suffering. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency

This week we were privileged to welcome Brother Samuel to Top Church. Sam is a Franciscan friar who currently lives in a Friary in East London. He was with us to share talk about why we share ashes on Ash Wednesday and he also distributed ashes with us as part of the service.
In this episode I chat with Michael Jones from Inspiring Philosophy about his recent debate with atheist Aron Ra on the question, "Is Christianity Dangerous?" Enjoy the show!!! -------- Here are some excerpts from peer reviewed articles on the role of Atheism in Albania and the former Soviet Union: From the article, “Violations of Freedom of Religion in Albania” by Barbara Frey, OPREE, vol IX, no. 6. 1989. “Belying the Constitution, however, anti-religious activity commenced almost immediately after the new government was formed. In August 1945, the government passed an agrarian reform law which deprived religious institutions of much of their property. A series of show trials and executions were held, following which the Jesuit order was banned in 1946 and the Franciscans in 1947. In 1946, all Catholic priests, nuns, and monks were expelled. Many priests were imprisoned, executed, or assassinated.” pp4-5. “At about the same time, the Ministry of Education banned the teaching of religion in state schools. In April 1947, the Party of Labor recommended introducing anti-religious teaching in schools. The government also attempted to halt religious instruction by clerics and lay-people even in homes.” p5. “Once the statues were passed, criminal penalties which had formerly protected the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion were removed from the Albanian Penal Code.” p5. “Public meetings were held at which the public denounced the clergy and vowed never to practice religion again. People's tribunals decided which public celebrations were religious in nature and how to replace them with appropriate national atheistic holidays. During public proceedings, crowds turned over their crucifixes, icons, bibles, and other religious items. Children whose fathers were priests denounced them as fakes, and “thunder sheets” (fletë-rrufe) were posted attacking those parents who had given religious names to their children.” p6. “All possible signs of religion were eradicated. Graveyards and tombstones were cleared of religious symbols: only the Communist star was permitted. Religious phrases were attacked too: the term “P.K.” meaning Përpara Krishit (in English, B.C.) was replaced with “P.E.R.” for Para Erës Sëre (“Before the New Era)... Despite stated constitutional guarantees, the People's Assembly passed Decree No. 4334 on 13 November 1967 (Published in Gazeta zyrtare on 22 November) which cancelled the legal status of religion... Radio Tiranë announced that Albania was now the “first atheist state in the world.” Religious freedom was removed from the statures; it would shortly be removed from the constitution as well.” p7. Speaking of the 1976 Constitution: “Article 37: The State recognizes no religion whatever and supports atheistic propaganda for the purpose of inculcating the scientific-materialist worldview.” p8. “Article 55 of the 1977 Criminal Code: Fascist, anti-democratic, religious, warmongering or anti-socialist propaganda, as well as the preparation, distribution or the possession for distribution of literature with such a content in order to weaken or undermine the state of the dictatorship of the Proletariat are punishable by imprisonment of between three and ten years. If these actions occur in time of war or if they have caused particularly serious consequences, they will be punished with imprisonment of not less than ten years or with death.” p9. “The government had already instituted another facet of it's anti-religious campaign. On 23 September 1975, it passed administrative Decree No. 5339 (also the similar Legislative Decree No 5334...) which stipulated that, ‘Citizens who have inappropriate names and offensive surnames from a political, ideological, and moral standpoint are obliged to change them...' therefore, it is legitimate to insist on the use of national names so that... the names of people do not become an indicator of the religious affiliations and divisions of yesteryear in the eyes of future generations.” p9. -------------------------------- From the article, “Soviet Books and Pamphlets on the Theme of Atheism: Statistics and Crucial Points” by Paul Roth, OPREE, vol V, no. 4. 1985. “Indeed, the Soviet constitution permits public atheistic propaganda but not religious propaganda. A religious book offered to the public would be an offense against the constitution. Thus, it is not surprising the Soviet authorities consider so-called “illegal” importation of Bibles into the Soviet Union as an offense against the laws of the state.” p9. “Those books and pamphlets which belong to the categories ‘Marxism-Leninism,' ‘Social Sciences,' and ‘Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology' are based on atheism. Those which belong to the category ‘Atheism and Religion' are anti-theistic, often militantly atheistic, with the exception of those texts which are intended for export to foreign countries.” p10. “Most of the titles, 17, are concerned with ‘atheistic education of the population' (total number of copies 761,000)... Some publications deal especially with the question of how a person can accomplish atheistic education goals in mathematic classes by using films.” p14. “In connection with the previously discussed group, we must also observe the following thematic category which presents ‘Atheism as a provision for a fulfilling life' to Soviet citizens... Religion is presented as the reason for spiritual and intellectual problems. Religion is to be replaced by a life based on atheistic principles with an atheistic value system and holidays and rituals free of religious content.” pp16-17. “If we attempt to draw a conclusion from the statistic taken from “New Books,” which, we reiterate, are obviously incomplete, we can state the following: 1) Clearly, atheistic literature in the Soviet Union belongs to the category of prescribed literature, not popular literature.” ------------------------ From the article, “The Current Situation of Religion in Albania” by Peter Prifti, OPREE, vol III, no. 3. 1983. “Questioning the zeal, if not the integrity of critics of Albanian atheism, Hoxha said that there are hundreds of millions of people in the world who do not believe in religion. Why then all the astonishment at socialist Albania? He closed his defense by saying, ‘Our state is atheistic by the will of its people.'” p2. ------------------------ From the article, “Grave Violations of Religious Rights in Albania” by Gjon Sinishta, OPREE, vol III, no. 5. 1983. “Enver Hoxha again set the stage for action with his infamous speech of February 6, 1967, urging the Albanian youth to fight “religious superstitions.” A ruthless campaign against all religions followed. Everywhere churches were burned or turned into sports arenas, dance halls, movie theaters, apartments, etc. Priests and bishops were publicly beaten. The Franciscan church of Arrmadhe in Shkodra, together with the Friary, was set afire one evening and four elderly Franciscans were burned to death. During 1967, according to the journal of Albanian writers, Nendori (November), about 2200 mosques, churches, chapels, monasteries and other religious buildings were vandalized and closed. Of that number, 327 were Roman Catholic. On November 22, 1967, the government published Decree No. 4337 ordering the annulment of the religious charters and of all laws pertaining to state-church relationships. All religious rites were prohibited and grave penalties were imposed on violators. The remaining priests were sent to forced-labor camps for ‘re-education.' The Albanian Party and government boasted that it had become the first totally atheistic state in the world.” p13. “With these articles Albania became the only country in the world where the suppression of religion and the propagation of atheism have become a constitutionally mandated state policy... Prior to the actual enactment of such official acts, the government manifested the same kind of suppression of religion. Fr. Stephen Kurti was executed in 1972 for baptizing a child in a labor camp at the parent's request. In 1974 the government also sentenced the three remaining Catholic Bishops to detention camps for conduction religious services in private. Following the constitutional outlawing of religion, in 1977 Fran Mark Gjoni of Shkodra was brought to trial for the possession of Bibles. Gjoni admitted, when presented with the Bibles taked from his home, that he had found them in parks and at the seashore where they had been left by tourists or floated in by sea. For his ‘crime' Gjoni was sentenced to 12 years in prison... For religious criminals such as Gjnoi, according to reports from recent refugees, the government has at least six prisons, nine concentration camps and 14 areas of external exile.” pp14-15.

Publishing two magazines, Cycling Journal and NZ Mountain Biker, Liams story is one of opportunity and determination. Explaining his story from obese to athlete, Liam shares what it takes to be creative and publish every month. A unique part of Liam’s story is how he became the owner of these two national magazines. Listen to the latest podcast to hear how Pedal Press was born and how he took on two poor performing magazines and breathed new life into them. He also shares advice on creating your own magazine and if you’re a content producer, either illustrator, writer or photographer, hear his advice on the best ways to get your work published and start a relationship with a publisher. What is Pedaling Podcast? Im John, I created Pedaling Podcast as a way to document the cycling stories as I cycle all the way from Auckland, New Zealand to London, United Kingdom. I became interested in the industry almost recently, when I spent a brief period working in Auckland’s oldest bike shop called T Whites. I mulled over this idea of collecting the stories, politics, business and social side of the cycling industry. I run everything either through the website, http://www.pedalingpodcast.com or via my Instagram https://www.instagram.com/pedalingpodcast If you have any feedback on my journey home, the show itself or recommend anyone I should speak to on the journey, follow the above links and get in touch.

Part two of our series on the Capuchins of Church Street, this special episode takes us inside the Friary as it is today, and speaks to those involved in running it
A trip with noted historian Dr. Bob Curran to Ballycastle inevitably lead us to the local friary and its most famous resident, known as the Black Nun, where he eloquently tells us more about her activities. Julia McQuillan was the reclusive mystic known as "the Black Nun"who is supposed to have lived in Bunamarghy Friary. The Black Nun lived and died at this spot during the 1600's. Her last wish was to be buried near the entrance to the church so that all who entered the friary would tread on her grave as a token of her humility. Legend has it that she is buried under the noteworthy holestone cross of which Bob tells us more about. The friary was built in the early 1500's and was occupied by the Third Order of Franciscans until roughly the mid-17th century. It is now a ruin in State care under the wing of the Environment and Heritage Department of the DoE. The Friary lies south of Ballycastle on the Cushendall Road. Apologies for the sound quality at times on the recording. #Ballycastle, #BlackNun #BobCurran, #Antrim
