What is spiritual direction?
Radically following the Lord's leading.
Carole Brown, prolific author in several subgenres of mystery and suspense, chats with me about her books, the books she loves to read, and her new Nursery Rhyme Suspense Series. You won't want to miss these books about a young woman determined to find out who murdered her brother years ago and the other cases she solves along the way. As one of Carole's reviewers said, "A girl's gotta eat!" (or something like that!). If you like small-town mysteries... she's got them. If you like intense suspense, she's got one of those too. Western? Yep. WWII? Oh, yeah. Listen in to what she has for your TBR pile. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. If You Love Suspense or a Great Mystery, You'll Love This Author's Books I was first introduced to Carole Brown through her book, Undiscovered Treasures (reviewed HERE). Since then, I've read most of the Appleton mysteries, but during our conversation, I was excited to learn that Carole also writes suspense and... not just contemporary. Brown writes western and historical (WWII... EEEP!) as well. Her first book, The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman, won awards and finalized in multiple contests. Carole says that of all of her books, it is the most intense, which makes sense considering it focuses on a mother's quest to avenge her daughter's murder by a cult. Her most recent release, Catch Me if You Can, is the first in a trilogy about a young woman on the hunt for her brother's murderer and the cases she solves along the way. Catch Me if You Can by Carole Brown The big cat sat on the oversized rock, ears pointed toward the sky, every muscle taut, every sense at the ready. “S-s-shut up and f-f-forget it! You've s-s-seen nothing and know nothing! I won't warn you again. G-g-got it?” His head swiveled, his ears twitching as if catching the hint of threat in the whisper. A soft hiss slid from his open mouth and reinforced the overtone of evil pressing in upon the scene… Coaxed into finding the animal killer at Jamieson's Outfitters, Tara Layne, with her sidekick, Boet, is welcomed by a threatening whisper and the unfriendly eyes of a gruff manager. Within hours, lies and dark secrets are slithering all over the campground. Intermingled with her search, Tara deals with her own buried secrets when a strange old Native American probes into the recesses of her heart forcing her to face her bitter feelings. And Wesley Clarke, manager/guide, both interesting and frustrating, holds an attraction for Tara that is primitive and exasperating. When Tara gets too close, she finds herself—and Boet—the target of someone who's determined to keep from getting caught. His theme: Run as fast as you can, you can't catch me. The question: Can Tara run fast enough to catch this real-life gingerbread boy before he decides to get rid of her and Boet? The New Evangelization invites baptized Catholics to renew their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church (according to the USCCB). Started by Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI, it’s a call for the Church (aka, you and me) to reach out to fallen away Catholics and bring them back to the sacraments. We want to talk about how to bring this movement to your parish and community. Starting with Carole Brown’s Gems for the New Evangelization: Shamelessly Pilfered from Various Treasuries of Church Teaching, we then add some additional points that we’ve discovered along the way. There are a lot of different things you can do, but the important thing is to start. Snippet from the Show “My favorite thing is to take every part of the Catechism and tie it back to the Cross and resurrection, because you can do it with everything.” We want to hear from you! Email us at eksb@ascensionpress.com with your story, question, or comment—or if you’ve got a new nickname for Dave. SHOWNOTES The Five Points for the New Evangelization * Recover the importance of kerygmatic proclamation. * Build explicitly Christ-centered witness testimony into everything. * Talk in the explicitly evangelical language of the New Evangelization popes. * Saturate yourself in the world of God (Bible studies, lectio divina training…) * Establish a permanent discipleship track in the parish. Dave and Mike’s added points for parish evangelization * Establish a formalized intercessory prayer group to bring about conversions. * You can’t do it alone. * Start with the programs that people must attend, to draw in people who might not be involved otherwise. * Start trying to meet everyone at your parish and learn their names. The Five Practical Takeaways * Read paragraphs 1- 21 of the Catechesi Tradendae by Pope John Paul II. * Consider joining or starting a Bible study at your parish. * Begin a conversation with the pastor, DRE, or director of religious evangelization about evangelization at the parish. * Look for touchstone moments (baptism class, marriage prep class) and how you can be a volunteer in those ministries. * Buy a Catholic Bible for someone who doesn’t have one in your life. In the second hour, host Fr. James Gross sat down with Tom Parlin of Catholic Charities of Southern MN to talk about his special role with bringing the Church's social mission to life. Fr. Gross then spoke with Jesse Zyskowski about the 177 Project and how it seeks to draw our attention to the Lord in a unique way. Finally, our host visited with Dr. Carole Brown about helping young people get a jump start on discerning their vocation.
In the second hour, hosts Andy Shaw and Fr. Michel Mulloy joined Carole Brown to talk about her new role as Director of the Sioux Spiritual Center in Howes, SD. Our hosts then spoke with Mark Houck, founder of The King's Men, about how men in our area have a chance to go "Into the Wild" this fall.
In a perfect world, we’d bring thousands of souls closer to Christ in our lifetime. But in reality, we'd be lucky to help even ten people grow considerably in their faith. In today’s episode, Dr. Carole Brown explains how our impact may seem insignificant, but if we focus our efforts on building up small groups of disciples, a serious ripple effect may lead millions of people to Christ over the course of time.
Luke and I discuss Confirmation retreats, failure in Catholic schools and ministries, and the ongoing need for evangelization. Luke uses the "Who do you say that I am?" verse like 60 times in this episode, and he relates a sad story about the phrase "personal relationship with Jesus".Here's the great Dr. Carole Brown article: The Problem with 'Not' Having a Personal Relationship with Jesus. This was a rebuttal piece to Dr. Jay Boyd's article critiquing Forming Intentional Disciples. But in catechetical practice, this model order must allow for the fact that the initial evangelization has often not taken place. A certain number of children baptized in infancy come for catechesis in the parish without receiving any other initiation into the faith and still without any explicit personal attachment to Jesus Christ; they only have the capacity to believe placed within them by Baptism and the presence of the Holy Spirit. — Pope John Paul II, Catechesis in Our Times, 19 Find Us Online!facebook.com/catchingfoxespodcasthttps://twitter.com/cfoxespodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/catchingfoxes/@LayEvangelist@theLukethe (Twitter only on the weekends! On May 1, Pope Benedict beatified his predecessor, John Paul II. John Paul's legacy will be analysed by historians for years to come, but perhaps the best way we can honour his memory is to study and his teachings. With this in mind, the topic of this symposium is, 'The Conversion of the Baptised in the Thought of John Paul II'. Dr Carole Brown gave the lecture, based on her recent doctoral research. Dr Brown has been involved in many aspects of the 'New Evangelisation' in the US, Ireland and elsewhere. She was director of evangelistic outreach in Franciscan University, Steubenville and in more recent times has been an important figure in Youth 2000 Ireland, Kerygma Teams and Spirit Radio (www.spiritradio.ie).
