In this episode, I chat with Emiko Jean, the New York Times bestselling author whose journey from various professions to the realm of writing is nothing short of inspiring. Emiko sheds light on her latest page-turner, The Return of Ellie Black, and the meticulous care she gives to her Japanese American characters. The world of publishing is fraught with uncertainties, but Emiko's candidness about her path, which took her from feeling disconnected to books she saw in libraries and bookshops due to her heritage, to celebrating representation in her work. The thread of survival and resilience weaves through our discussion, as Emiko draws upon true crime inspirations to craft narratives that echo the human spirit's enduring nature. She opens up about her five-year commitment to storytelling, infusing her characters with psychological depth, and confronting the repercussions of trauma. The novel's gripping conclusion—a twist devised to keep readers guessing—is a testament to her ability to create suspense that lingers beyond the final page. Finally, Emiko reflects on the arduous road to publication—the rejections, the revision under the guidance of an editorial agent, and the triumph of securing a two-book deal. Her approach to reading, favoring nonfiction during the writing process, and the unexpected delight in branching into new literary territories, underscores the ever-evolving nature of a writer's craft. In the 2006 "Wicker Man" film, imagine a world where Nicolas Cage's facial expressions have more twists and turns than the convoluted plot itself. Picture Cage, clad in a bear costume and perpetually confused expression, stumbling through a remote island community where the locals seem to have a PhD in creepy rituals and questionable folk songs. As he investigates a missing girl, Cage's character finds himself tangled in a web of increasingly bizarre situations, culminating in a finale so absurdly unforgettable that you'll never look at bees the same way again. It's a cinematic rollercoaster where the only thing scarier than the titular wicker man itself is trying to figure out if Cage's performance is intentionally hilarious or accidentally brilliant. Short Mystery & Suspense Collections - Book 12 Title: Short Mystery and Suspense Collections Overview: Dozens of short mystery and suspense fiction stories are available through our Short Mystery & Suspense Collections series from classic mystery and suspense fiction authors Charles Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H. P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, Bram Stoker, Lewis Carroll, Gertrude Atherton, Mark Twain, H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling, Oscar Wilde, Joseph Conrad, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and many other classic mystery and suspense fiction authors. Mystery is a fiction genre where the nature of an event, usually a murder or other crime, remains mysterious until the end of the story. Often within a closed circle of suspects, each suspect is usually provided with a credible motive and a reasonable opportunity for committing the crime. The central character is often a detective (such as Sherlock Holmes), who eventually solves the mystery by logical deduction from facts presented to the reader. In a dramatic work, suspense is the anticipation of the outcome of a plot or of the solution to an uncertainty, puzzle, or mystery, particularly as it affects a character for whom one has sympathy. Mystery fiction can be detective stories in which the emphasis is on the puzzle or suspense element and its logical solution such as a whodunit. Mystery fiction can be contrasted with hardboiled detective stories, which focus on action and gritty realism. Mystery fiction can also involve a supernatural mystery in which the solution does not have to be logical and even in which there is no crime involved while some mystery books are non-fiction. A writer who never dreamed of writing fiction? An avid reader all her life, an editor, reviewer, speech writer, Max Folsom never envisioned herself an author, a mystery writer.“It was an impossible concept to me,” she says. “I couldn't conceive of how an author would come up with a story and all its details, just as I couldn't understand how a composer could hear the music and put it to paper. But one afternoon sitting in the back yard, the scene of private detective Baker Somerset finding the dead body at her office came to me full blown.” My husband said, “Write it down and see what happens.”A member of Crime Writers of Canada, Sisters in Crime, and the League of Vermont Writers she writes a column in the quarterly Sherlockian journal GROANS, CRIES AND BLEATINGS, and was a finalist in both the 2018 Daphne Du Maurier Award for excellence in unpublished Mystery/Suspense, and the 2020 Crime Writers of Canada Arthur Ellis Award for Best Unpublished Crime Novel. She is currently at work on her second Somerset novel, SEARCHING FOR PETER GRIFFITHS.  Married to a retired Canadian Military Officer, and owner of a large orange striped cat, she divides her time between their Ottawa Centretown apartment, and a stone house in Vermont. She drives a burnt orange Mini Cooper with black racing stripes.https://maxfolsom.com/Today's episode is brought to you by John's full series of crime thrillers available right now. ⭐ Hey there! Here's Episode 10 (woohoo!), where I talk about all my favorite books in the suspense/mystery category! One of my favorite genres ever is murder mystery/thriller set in the late 1800s/early 1900s with a strong female protagonist. Oddly specific, but maybe I'll do an episode later on these books, because trust me, there are a ton that fit in the category and it's one of my latest obsessions (along with Goodreads)! But in this episode, I'll read a summary of each novel to give you a brief overview of the plot, then move on to my own little commentary. Below you'll find a list of all the books and authors. :) Hopefully, you find one (or ten?!) you like and check them out! *Recorded in January of 2022, so some facts/details may be a little off! :)* *Just a note that some of the books may contain more mature topics/themes, so it would be best to read at your own discretion.* 1) Bad Girls Don't Die Trilogy by Katie Alender 2) Frozen Charlotte by Alex Bell 3) Charlotte Says by Alex Bell 4) One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus 5) One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus 6) Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus 7) Famous Last Words by Katie Alender 8) These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly (one of my favs

This week, I was so honored to welcome back my favorite crime writer working today. Novelist Megan Abbott is the Edgar-winning author of such acclaimed, rich works as "Give Me Your Hand," "You Will Know Me," "The Fever," "Dare Me," "Queenpin," and more. Her latest novel - "The Turnout" - was a "Today Show" Read with Jenna book selection as well as a "New York Times Bestseller" and most recently the winner of "The LA Times" Book Prize for Mystery/Suspense.An impressive film buff who is as delightful as she is intelligent, I had so much fun celebrating Judy Holliday and Martin Scorsese with her last year and am so glad she returned to get the band back together to discuss five of her favorite underrated movies from one of her most beloved filmmakers - Mr. Billy Wilder. In this fast or one could even say "Wilder-paced" episode, you'll hear us explain why the films "The Major and The Minor," "A Foreign Affair," "One, Two, Three," "Love in the Afternoon," and "Kiss Me, Stupid" deserve just as much love as some of the most famous classics from the director of "Some Like it Hot," "Double Indemnity," and "The Apartment."Originally Posted on Patreon on 5/3/22 here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/65951851Logo: Kate Gabrielle (KateGabrielle.com)Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

B8E8 - His Last Bow - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Book 8, Part 2, Episode 8 Title: His Last Bow Overview: His Last Bow, née His Last Bow: Some (Later) Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes is a 1917 collection of previously published Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, including the titular short story, "His Last Bow: The War Service of Sherlock Holmes" (1917). The collection's first US edition adjusts the anthology's subtitle to Some Later Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes. All editions contain a brief preface, by John H. Watson, M.D. as follows. "The friends of Mr. Sherlock Holmes will be glad to learn that he is still alive and well, though somewhat crippled by occasional attacks of rheumatism. He has, for many years, lived in a small farm upon the Downs five miles from Eastbourne, where his time is divided between philosophy and agriculture. During this period of rest he has refused the most princely offers to take up various cases, having determined that his retirement was a permanent one. The approach of the German war caused him, however, to lay his remarkable combination of intellectual and practical activity at the disposal of the Government, with historical results which are recounted in His Last Bow. Several previous experiences which have lain long in my portfolio have been added to His Last Bow so as to complete the volume." His Last Bow is composed of 10 episodes née chapters with the first two episodes being a lengthy, two-part story consisting of The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge: B8E1 - The Singular Experience of Mr. John Scott Eccles, B8E2 - The Tiger of San Pedro, B8E3 - The Adventure of The Cardboard Box, B8E4 - The Adventure of the Red Circle - Part 1, B8E5 - The Adventure of the Red Circle - Part 2, B8E6 - The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans, B8E7 - The Adventure of the Dying Detective, B8E8 - The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax, B8E9 - The Adventure of the Devil's Foot, and B8E10 - His Last Bow: The War Service of Sherlock Holmes. Carole Brown, prolific author in several subgenres of mystery and suspense, chats with me about her books, the books she loves to read, and her new Nursery Rhyme Suspense Series. You won't want to miss these books about a young woman determined to find out who murdered her brother years ago and the other cases she solves along the way. As one of Carole's reviewers said, "A girl's gotta eat!" (or something like that!). If you like small-town mysteries... she's got them. If you like intense suspense, she's got one of those too.  Western?  Yep. WWII?  Oh, yeah.  Listen in to what she has for your TBR pile. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. If You Love Suspense or a Great Mystery, You'll Love This Author's Books I was first introduced to Carole Brown through her book, Undiscovered Treasures (reviewed HERE). Since then, I've read most of the Appleton mysteries, but during our conversation, I was excited to learn that Carole also writes suspense and... not just contemporary. Brown writes western and historical (WWII... EEEP!) as well. Her first book, The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman, won awards and finalized in multiple contests. Carole says that of all of her books, it is the most intense, which makes sense considering it focuses on a mother's quest to avenge her daughter's murder by a cult. Her most recent release, Catch Me if You Can, is the first in a trilogy about a young woman on the hunt for her brother's murderer and the cases she solves along the way. Catch Me if You Can by Carole Brown The big cat sat on the oversized rock, ears pointed toward the sky, every muscle taut, every sense at the ready. “S-s-shut up and f-f-forget it! You've s-s-seen nothing and know nothing! I won't warn you again. G-g-got it?” His head swiveled, his ears twitching as if catching the hint of threat in the whisper. A soft hiss slid from his open mouth and reinforced the overtone of evil pressing in upon the scene… Coaxed into finding the animal killer at Jamieson's Outfitters, Tara Layne, with her sidekick, Boet, is welcomed by a threatening whisper and the unfriendly eyes of a gruff manager. Within hours, lies and dark secrets are slithering all over the campground. Intermingled with her search, Tara deals with her own buried secrets when a strange old Native American probes into the recesses of her heart forcing her to face her bitter feelings. And Wesley Clarke, manager/guide, both interesting and frustrating, holds an attraction for Tara that is primitive and exasperating. When Tara gets too close, she finds herself—and Boet—the target of someone who's determined to keep from getting caught. His theme: Run as fast as you can, you can't catch me. The question: Can Tara run fast enough to catch this real-life gingerbread boy before he decides to get rid of her and Boet? You can learn more about Carole Brown on her BLOG where you can find links to her books and other social media.
