This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveFriend of Wisdom of Crowds and frequent podcast guest Samuel Moyn is a professor of law and history at Yale University, and author of several books, including Humane: How the United States Abandoned Peace and Reinvented War (2021, Macmillan) and Liberalism Against Itself: Cold War Intellectuals and the Making of Our Times (2023). He is also the author of a recent article saying that no, sorry, the courts cannot save American democracy. If you've been following our podcast lately, you'll know that Shadi and Damir think differently. Both are preoccupied with the question of whether we're in a constitutional crisis. And both have argued that it's the Judiciary branch which can stop Trump from becoming a tyrant. We are in a state of “brinksmanship with the Courts,” as Damir puts it. Moyn, however, warns that “Judicial processes can launder radical political change,” like the ones Trump is trying to make. The Supreme Court might cede a lot of ground to the Executive before we get a big decisive case that checks Trump. In fact, we might never even get such a case. The real test for democracy, Moyn argues, will come at the ballot box: “Do we have elections that stay competitive where the loser accepts his loss?” A lot will depend on whether Democrats can figure out how to make a popular platform. A lot, too, will depend on Republicans, and whether at least some of them will part ways with Trump. Shadi asks Moyn for some historical perspective. Is this the biggest crisis in US history? Probably not, but what can we learn from historical perspective? What is the baseline against which we should judge ourselves today? Moyn argues that “The only use of the past is to make a better future. … Let's try to understand why things broke before.”In our bonus section for paid subscribers, Moyn and our hosts discuss recent White House legal challenges against birthright citizenship; anti-Trump lawfare; why Moyn believes that “what the law is is decided in the present political struggle”; why a parliamentary system is usually more democratic than a presidential one; whether the US is culturally attached to a strong executive branch; and much more.Required Reading and Listening:* Samuel Moyn and Ryan D. What does it mean to be in a ever-present state of crisis? Many across the political spectrum denote this point in history as a confluence of crises points. On this episode of The Public Good, Dr. Rinaldo Walcott, Chair of the Department of Africana and American Studies at the University at Buffalo joins us to discuss the role of Black Studies and the history of Black people as a critical tool in confronting crisis and organizing for a better collective future.Dr. Walcott leads UB's Humanities Institute Annual Conference 2025: Black Studies and the Crises of Our Times, this week on March 12th-14th, free and open to the public. "Black Studies and the Crises of Our Times responds broadly to the impact of the field since its formal establishment over 50 years ago. This multi-day conference, organized by the Department of Africana and American Studies in conjunction with the Humanities Institute, will articulate why we need Black Studies more than ever for both its national critique and its global articulations of political community." An atheist, a radical for capitalism, a caricature of a greedy libertarian, a best-selling novelist, a difficult partner and passionate lover, and the self-proclaimed greatest philosopher since Aristotle: Ayn Rand was many things, and we talk about almost all of them in this epic episode. To do so, we called upon historian Jennifer Burns, whose intellectual biography, Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right , is enormously helpful in trying to understand an idiosyncratic writer who, both then and now, fits ambiguously into the "fusionist" post-war conservative movement. Rand remains a controversial figure whose ideas permeate our culture and continue to inspire some of the most consequential (and least appealing) political figures in the United States. To understand Rand and her influence, we examine her family's experiences during and after the Russian Revolution, her journey to the U.S. and early success in Hollywood, the arduous path she trod to become a writer, Rand's involvement in anti-New Deal politics in the 1930s and 40s, her ideas, philosophy, and scandalous personal life, and much more.Sources:Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead  (1943)— Atlas Shrugged (1957)— We the Living (1936)Jennifer Burns, Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right (2009)— Milton Friedman: The Last Conservative (2023)Whittaker Chambers, "Big Sister Is Watching You," National Review, Dec 28, 1957Murray Rothbard, "The Sociology of the Ayn Rand Cult," (1972)Mary Gaitskill, Two Girls, Fat and Thin (1991)Lisa Duggan, Mean Girl: Ayn Rand and the Culture of Greed, (2019)— "Ayn Rand and the Cruel Heart of Neoliberalism," Dissent, May 20, 2019.Adam Curtis, All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, (2011)Listen again:"Milton Friedman and the Making of Our Times," Dec 3, 2023...and don't forget to subscribe to Know Your Enemy on Patreon to listen to all of our premium episodes!

How does one read the signs of the times? What does it mean to resist? How do we engage faithfully in the struggle? Dietrich Bonhoeffer has achieved iconic status as one who epitomizes what it means to struggle and resist tyranny and fascism and how one acts in faithful witness as a religious and political commitment. Bonhoeffer‘s witness and example is more relevant than ever. In this episode, I am joined by the preeminent historian of the Holocaust and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dr. Victoria Barnett. Jeffrey Pugh and I got to talk to her multiple times throughout our work for the Rise of Bonhoeffer, and our last conversation was so rich that I couldn't help but share it here. Our discussion focuses on a crucial essay penned by Bonhoeffer in 1942; "After Ten Years" is a succinct and sober reflection and remains one of the best descriptions ever written about what happened to the German people under National Socialism. We also let Vicki demythologize some popular ahistorical attributions around Bonhoeffer's life. Victoria J. Barnett served from 2004-2014 as one of the general editors of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, the English translation series of Bonhoeffer's complete works. She has lectured and written extensively about the Holocaust, particularly about the role of the German churches. In 2004 she began directing the Programs on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum until her retirement. Her published works include Bystanders: Conscience and Complicity during the Holocaust (1999) and For the Soul of the People: Protestant Protest against Hitler (1992). This conversation centers around her translation and significant introduction and historical analysis of Bonhoeffer's "After Ten Years": Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Our Times. How did Trump manage to get re-elected? In this episode Samuel Moyn, Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History at Yale University, explores what he sees as the profound crisis facing liberalism and why many in the West have become disillusioned with it. Drawing from his latest book 'Liberalism against Itself: Cold War Intellectuals and the Making of Our Times', Moyn traces the roots of this crisis to the Cold War. The liberalism of the Cold War, he argues, betrayed the radical and emancipatory hopes of the Enlightenment and paved the way to the excesses of neoliberal economics. In conversation with researcher and writer Adam McCauley, Moyn outlines what it would take to restore liberalism's original radical promise. -------------- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. As we enter a new year, many of us are thinking about fresh starts, big goals, and how we can make more meaningful contributions—whether in our personal lives or at work. But what if the key to achieving that isn't about working harder or chasing success the traditional way? What if the secret lies in something as simple and powerful as kindness? In today's episode, we dive deep with James Rhee, an educator, impact investor, CEO, and author of Red Helicopter: A Parable for Our Times. James is best known for his transformative leadership at Ashley Stewart, where he not only revived a struggling retail brand but turned it into a community-driven powerhouse by weaving kindness, empathy, and purpose into every decision. A Harvard Law graduate and former high school teacher, James has a remarkable ability to bridge the worlds of high finance and human-centered leadership. We discuss how a childhood experience with a red helicopter shaped his lifelong philosophy, his journey from teaching to private equity, and the surprising parallels between math and creativity. James also delves into the role of AI in shaping society and why now, more than ever, leaders must embrace humanity and creativity to drive lasting impact.

In the 1970s, one of the leaders of the Waldorf movement, Karl Ege, wrote in his essay "An Evident Need of Our Times." "What we are founding here is a seed, the seed of a living organism. The organism is essentially three-fold, pedagogical, artistic, and agricultural, as reflections of thought, feeling, and will. Each needs the others if the whole is to flourish. All are interrelated. For young and old alike, this work together will create a place in which to become, in the true sense, a full human being." We're back--we hope you missed us! And we brought scissors, and we are not afraid to use them in spatchcocking a turkey for Thanksgiving. "Spatchcocking?" You may well ask. It's not just a word for removing the spine of the turkey to make for a wonderfully evenly roasted bird in half the time--say goodbye to over-cooked, dry breasts and under-cooked thighs (the turkey's, that is). But it's more than that as chef, teacher and cookbook author Kim O'Donnel explains in "Spatchocking: A Culinary Term for Our Times." Written in 2022 after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but perhaps even more resonant today, O'Donnel reflects on her own freedom to make choices that have shaped who she is."The right to decide allowed me to become the woman I am . . . The choices that were mine to make allowed me to forge my own path. They've given me the wisdom to know this: Without safe, legal abortion, this country is spatchcocked."Kim O'Donnel, "Spatchcock: A Culinary Term for Our Times," Lulu Pork Chop, July 3, 2022But what about Rhinebeck?! While other podcasters might broadcast live from the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival, we prefer to wallow in the womb of time and reflect on our experience for a month. What did we conclude? It wasn't just fun, it was joyously inspiring. We met so many designers and knitters we admire--Aimée Gille, Vincent Williams, Patty Lyons, Sarah Schira, Jamie Lomax, Bristol Ivy, Gigi Queen of Orange, the Grocery Girls and Rosann Fleischauer. What about Andrea Mowry? Don't worry, her pattern "Framed" clearly caught the collective fancy this year and was everywhere in all colors and sizes. It was magical to see so many people wearing hand-knit their framed garb on the hill for the meet-up.

We dive deep into the escalating tensions in Israel, especially in Judea and Samaria, and explore these conflicts' historical and prophetic dimensions. Bill offers a biblical perspective, referencing [Jeremiah 12:14-17], and discusses God's peace plan, which involves addressing ancient hostilities and returning displaced populations to their lands. We explore the divine judgment and compassion embedded in these prophecies, providing a profound understanding of the current geopolitical landscape. Our conversation then turns to the historical re-establishment of Arab states and Israel post-Ottoman Empire. Was the creation of Israel in 1948 merely a political move or an act of divine intervention? We analyze biblical prophecies intertwined with these events, highlighting the importance of Israel's adherence to divine expectations amidst fragile peace agreements with its neighbors. The theological implications of these developments are immense, shedding light on the prophetic undercurrents influencing present-day Middle East politics. Finally, we tackle Israel's military and geopolitical challenges, particularly from Hezbollah and the broader prophetic landscape suggested by Psalm 83. We invite listeners to grasp the prophetic significance of unfolding events by discussing the future destruction of Damascus and Edom, the potential role of the Israeli Defense Forces, and the impact of modern-day conflicts on biblical prophecies. To view this interview:  See https://rumble.com/v5ejrud-pastors-round-table-its-about-to-go-nuclear-in-israel.htmlFind Us & Follow, Likes n Share helps our Reach.-Amos37 Website-Amos37 on Facebook-Amos37 on Instagram-Amos37 on Rumble-Amos37 on Gettr-Amos37 on Gab-Amos37 on Parler

FUTURE FOSSILS

Subscribe, Rate, & Review Future Fossils on YouTube • Spotify • Apple Podcasts✨ About This EpisodeThe world is getting hotter, faster, stranger, and scarier every year. Species disappear each day, life-critical diversity replaced with media, consumer goods, capital, and trash. And yet…what do any of us feel inspired to do about it? Why has humankind thus far failed to wield its religions as an instrument for biospheric action? Reading the above probably generated more distress than motivation. Might Western civilization actually be better off reclaiming what the modern world felt it didn't need — namely, the sacred? What if Christianity has ALWAYS at its core held teachings meant to stir up riotous love — the kind that gets us off our asses striving joyously to serve the living world we are?Endlessly subversive author and Rice University Professor Timothy Morton (Twitter | Substack | Patreon | YouTube | Instagram) thinks so — and their new book Hell: In Search of A Christian Ecology argues eloquently for a weird and wonderful postmodern nondual Christianity in which we give up trying to run the place and realign ourselves with Life. Hell is a rousing and reviving work I underlined extensively, and our discussion traces and retraces Tim's characteristically good-lurid and good-florid, stark-but-dreamy, mystically mundane, paradox-rich writing. We soar into romantic numinosity and dwell in body horrors, throw curtains open to pure light and celebrate the stains we can't erase. Trigger warnings plenty, here — but one of them is that in the high-brow, low-brow oscillations you might find yourself awakened to the nature of your being-as-the-God-shaped-hole-in-everything.I'll let them introduce what is easily one of the most potent episodes this show has ever published:“A wonderful three-dimensional podcast. Like, I can't thank you enough for wanting to go all the way around the mulberry bush and then into the mulberry bush and then outside the mulberry bush, then pulverize the mulberry bush into powder, send it around a particle accelerator, and watch the diffusion cloud chamber patterns as you compose another symphony using fractal geometry. I just love this.”If that's the kind of conversation you enjoy, then buckle up. Tim knows precisely the poetic mind-keys with which we can find The Garden in the flames of Hell itself, and Heaven in the sinful body of the Technocene.Over the next two hours, we round the bases on a Greatest Hits of all my favorite topics, all of which appear in some sublime form in Tim's wonderful new book. About the Guest: James Rhee is the CEO, educator, and acclaimed author of "Red Helicopter: A Parable for Our Times." Influenced by the caregiver values of his first-generation Korean immigrant parents, James has played a transformative role in business and education, notably reviving Ashley Stewart from the brink of liquidation while advocating for leadership rooted in kindness and numerical acuity. Episode Summary: Greg McKeown hosts James Rhee, an accomplished CEO, educator, and author of the transformative book, "Red Helicopter: A Parable for Our Times." Throughout the conversation, James Rhee uncovers his journey from a young Korean immigrant sharing his lunch in kindergarten to leading a monumental turnaround at Ashley Stewart. His story is rich with lessons on resilience, transformation, and the undeniable power of kindness in leadership and everyday actions. James and Greg delve into the themes of chaos and intuition, discussing how modern life's overwhelming noise can obscure our innate wisdom and kindness. James eloquently shares how the metaphor of the "red helicopter" symbolizes pure acts of kindness and navigates us towards simplicity amidst chaos. The episode also explores how the pursuit of success can sometimes stifle curiosity and diminish one's true self, with James reflecting on the years he spent following societal norms of success that ultimately left him unfulfilled. He challenges listeners to rediscover joy, connectedness, and meaningful human interactions in a world increasingly driven by digital distractions. Key Takeaways: The Power of Simple Acts: Small, intuitive acts of kindness, like sharing a meal, can have profound impacts and serve as a guiding principle throughout life. Navigating Chaos with Intuition: In a world filled with information overload, trusting one's intuition can help navigate the noise and make meaningful decisions. Distinction Between Intelligence and Wisdom: Being smart and being wise are distinct, with wisdom requiring lived experiences and the ability to ask deeper questions. Rediscovering Curiosity and Joy: Success shouldn't come at the cost of losing one's curiosity and joy in life. James encourages engaging in meaningful hobbies and reading for pleasure to enrich life. Human Connectedness: Emphasizing the Korean concept of Chung, James highlights the importance of genuine human connections that transcend time and space, vital for a fulfilling life. Notable Quotes: "The problem was very simple. There was a boy. I liked him. He made me laugh. He didn't have food. I had some. I solved the problem and I gave it to him." — James Rhee "I felt myself becoming less interesting, you know, like lost hobbies. I have a big passion for music. Stopped playing music, stopped taking lessons." — James Rhee "Most of the books that get written these days, they profit off of you being confused." — James Rhee "Intelligence is about information and skills, but wisdom is about the lived experience and connecting with the deeper aspects of life." — Greg McKeown "Chung is like a connectedness between people. Send us a Text Message.James interviews another James about a Marian apparition and prophecy all the way back from the 16th century and one you probably have never heard about.  Inspired partly by Jesse Romero, James Valois wrote about this time-defining apparition in his latest book 'Our Lady's Prophecies, God's Messages for Our Times.'  The conversation touches on topics such as the decline in faith and morals, the rise of communism, the importance of repentance, and the hope for restoration. Make sure you buy the book here!TakeawaysOur Lady's prophecies should be taken seriously and used as a guide for amending our lives and fighting against the cultural challenges of our time. The decline in faith and morals, the rise of communism, and the push for sin through legislative means are issues that need to be resisted and fought against.Frequenting the sacraments, attending Mass, and going to confession are important practices for spiritual growth and resistance against darkness.Food for Thought"When all will seem like it's lost in darkness, that will be the hour that our Lady steps in and plays her role.""We need to push back and resist that (sin) and spiritually resist and fight against what is wrong in our country.""Thank you so much for entering the fight. On May 4, the Supreme Court voted unanimously to overturn this decision, clearing the way for Trump to appear on the ballot in all fifty states. Naturally, at Wisdom of Crowds these events got us thinking about the big questions. When it comes to eligibility for office, who should have the final say — the Supreme Court, or the voters? What is more important for a democracy: Elections or rights? And where do rights come from, anyway? At the moment, these questions are mostly being discussed on the Left side of the aisle, so we invited two prominent left-wing writers to argue about them in a live show. Christianity's most potent and lasting advice on aging well comes from one of its most remarkable contemplatives: Hildegard of Bingen from the 12th century. She was an explosion of creativity: she wrote the first known opera (by hundreds of years). She was an architect, a physician, a poet, a painter, a composer, a theologian and a leader of women. This podcast will look at her pitch that "greening" is the road to joy, fruitfulness and vitality as we age.Mentioned on this podcast:Hildegard of Bingen: A Saint for Our Times, by Matthew Fox

You know when you have a conversation that provides you with a framework of a problem – one you may not have even known existed – and it opens your eyes in a whole new way? Yeah, today is one of those conversations.   Because it helps look at questions like this: Do we really know what freedom is? How about liberty? And if we don't know what those concepts mean, how do we know if we've lost them? And what role does the carceral system have in all of this?   This might seem like a lot, but in a year in which we're questioning everything - democracy and America, to name a few - if we don't know what those concepts mean, how can we imagine a world full of them?   That's one of the questions that today's guest asks - and answers - through her new book, Of Greed and Glory, which takes a look at her brother's incarceration in Angola and uses that as a jumping-off point to ask some larger questions that, in all honesty, we need to be asking ourselves if we really want to be engaged in this fight.    After you listen to this episode, please tell several friends about it, and look to support people doing this work in your community. As always, we'd love to hear what resonates with you - please do reach out and let us know.   What to listen for: How incarcerating an individual is actually incarcerating a family Does America even want to be a democracy anymore? The master-slave dynamic – including how that shows up in patriarchy, and yes, why we believe women understand the significance of this conversation.  Hello, Dear White Women podcast… How American enterprises are built on the same model as the slave plantation slate.  Corporate America, we're looking at you. Liberalism today is under attack, as it often has been. Samuel Moyn, the Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History at Yale University, believes that liberalism's failures, and a path to its better future, can be discerned through a study of how liberal intellectuals reacted to the rise of fascism and Nazism during the World War II period, and especially to Soviet communism during the Cold War. Jack Goldsmith sat down to talk to Moyn about his new book on the topic, “Liberalism Against Itself: Cold War Intellectuals and the Making of Our Times.” They discussed how and why Cold War liberals such as Isaiah Berlin and Gertrude Himmelfarb transformed liberalism, and why he thinks the transformation has had deleterious effects on U.S. foreign and domestic policy. They also discussed the aims of intellectual history and the relationship between his project and recent anti-liberal projects from the right.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
