Emily and Edmund welcome to the Real+True podcast Dr. Petroc Willey, Ph.D, who has dedicated his life to studying and sharing the gift of the Catechism with our Church. This episode tackles the questions, “what's the difference between catechesis and evangelization? Do they overlap at all? And how do we encounter Christ in the Catechism?” Dr. Petroc Willey, Ph.D shares how he first encountered the Catechism, a powerful and practical way to pray with the Catechism itself, and how to appreciate the Catechism for the gift that it is to us. (00:10) Edmund and Emily introduce this episode, its mission and its guest. Today, they are joined by Dr. Petroc Willey, Ph.D, Ph.D. professor of theology at the Franciscian University of Steubenville. Dr. Willey is the Director of the Catechetical Institute at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, Consultor for the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation (now the Dicastery for Evangelization) in Rome, and is on the Board of Advisors for Real+True. Edmund shares how he encountered Dr. Willey and the impact of Dr. Willey(03:40) “How did you encounter the Catechism, Dr. Willey?” Our guest shares how a project to write a commentary on the Catechism introduced him to the book that would change his life. “It (the Catechism) was asking of me a response of faith, and it was challenging me into entering a relationship with Christ the whole time. It wasn't a book that could just stay on the shelf.” Edmundo then shares his personal story of encountering the Catechism. (10:20) Catechesis and Evangelization: what's the difference? And how do they overlap? Evangelization is a process, and catechesis is a moment within it. Dr. Willey explores this and details that the Church considers primary catechists to be parents. “The catechist needs what's in the catechism in order to introduce the other person to Jesus Christ and his saving truth.” The goal of catechesis is ‘insertion into the mystery of Christ.” (19:50) Introducing others to Christ: encountering the Catechism and encountering Christ. Dr. Willey shows us an example of how the Catechism speaks to the human heart, and the “depth of its spirituality.” Dr. Willey switches out the word “mankind” with the name of the person he's speaking to as an example of how powerful the Catechism is. Emily asks Edmund to explain how to pray with the Catechism, following the structure of Lectio Divina. An OSV Podcasts partner. The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden

In the fifth of our Merely Catholic podcast series, Dr Gavin Ashenden is joined from Jerusalem by Father Dwight Longenecker, the acclaimed U.S. author and speaker. They discuss Easter in the Holy Land as well as mounting tensions between Christians in the West and the increasingly secularised societies in which they find themselves. The worldliness of a Church in which the sex appears to many Christians to be more important than the supernatural is brought into focus, along with the dynamic responses to contemporary challenges initiated by others who seem more determined to deliver the authentic fruits of the New Evangelisation.

September 12, 2021 marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, the greatest poet of Western Christianity. While Dante has had a profound impact on art over the centuries, Canadian artist Timothy P. Schmalz has undertaken an ambitious project to sculpt Dante's magnum opus, The Divine Comedy. Mr. Schmalz is the artist behind the famous Homeless Jesusstatue, which can be found at churches throughout the world. He has also sculpted large public memorials such as Angels Unawares, the Canadian Veterans' Memorial and Golden Leaves. His latest project, sculpted amidst the COVID lockdowns, is possibly his most ambitious and will feature 100 individual sculptures walking people through Dante's work on Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. He will thus be the first artist to depict all 100 cantos of The Divine Comedy. Today on the Catholic Exchange Podcast, Timothy Schmalz describes his creative process and how Dante has had such an impact on his work. Mr. Schmalz also tells us about the parallels he sees between Dante-in-exile and the general feelings we all feel in our chaotic world. Through all this, we find in Dante a companion for the road who restores our hope in Providence of God. Today's episode is especially a great start if you have a love of Dante's work or want to dive into his great poem. ResourcesFind more info about the Dante gardens and sculptures at the site DanteSculpture.com, where you can see the many beautiful sculptures. You can also follow Mr. Schmalz's work at his website or Facebook. Evangelisation is not activism. It has nothing to do with the techniques, programs, and lobbying that defines social and political activism. Instead, it has everything to do with the witness of one who lives and embodies a kind of feeling, tasting, and savoring relationship with the faith they profess. To evangelize effectively, is to be a hobbit: it is to embody the small way, the long way, the slow encounter, the deep abiding. It is to first receive faith as a culture and practice of love, to be immersed and transformed here, and only then to offer this faith to the world as an act of love. “For the time will soon come when Hobbits will shape the fortune of all”.

On May 1, Pope Benedict beatified his predecessor, John Paul II. John Paul's legacy will be analysed by historians for years to come, but perhaps the best way we can honour his memory is to study and his teachings. With this in mind, the topic of this symposium is, 'The Conversion of the Baptised in the Thought of John Paul II'. Dr Carole Brown gave the lecture, based on her recent doctoral research. Dr Brown has been involved in many aspects of the 'New Evangelisation' in the US, Ireland and elsewhere. She was director of evangelistic outreach in Franciscan University, Steubenville and in more recent times has been an important figure in Youth 2000 Ireland, Kerygma Teams and Spirit Radio (www.spiritradio.ie).
