At least until now, that is. Academic and professor of business history at Osaka University, Pierre-Yves Donzé is the author of The Making Of A Status Symbol, A business history of Rolex translated and published in English this year. We wanted to start our new podcast, The Business of Watches, by talking about the most important Swiss brand, and Donzé serves as an ideal guest, explaining the decisions and events that shaped Rolex into what it is today. The episode is full of revelations, from how Rolex dealt with the business challenges of a strong Swiss franc and the arrival of quartz, to how the brand overtook Omega in sales, and the critical role the U.S. has played in the company's history and success. Thanks so much for listening, and be sure to drop by the comments section if you have any thoughts or questions on the episode. We'll be back in two weeks with another episode of The Business of Watches. If you have any questions for an upcoming Q&A episode, please leave them in the comments below. “Bromance” is a term that is often used to describe close friendships between men. These relationships contain elements of emotional intimacy, but physical intimacy may occur as well, such as cuddling. Sometimes there's even a sexual component, such as when two male friends participate in a threesome together. In today’s show, we’re going to discuss the psychology behind bromances. We'll also talk about why a lot of men struggle when it comes to being vulnerable with their friends. I am joined once again by Mark McCormack, a Professor of Sociology at Aston University. His research examines how social trends related to gender and sexuality map onto everyday experiences of individuals. To date, he has published more than 80 scientific works. Some of the specific questions we answer in this episode include: What does it really mean to have a bromance? What do these relationships look like? Why do a lot of heterosexual men find it difficult to open up to their male friends? How common is physical intimacy in bromances? What are bromances like among men who identify as something other than heterosexual? You can click here to connect with Mark on Twitter/X. Got a sex question? What does it really mean to be “kinky?” It can be difficult to say because kink is a subjective term that means different things to different people. Kink can also be a fantasy, a practice, or even an identity. It’s time for a new way of thinking about kink that can capture all of this complexity. In today’s show, we’re going to explore the brand new Kink Orientation Scale, a scientific quiz designed to measure how kinky a given person is in a comprehensive way. My guest is Mark McCormack, a Professor of Sociology at Aston University. His research examines how social trends related to gender and sexuality map onto everyday experiences of individuals. To date, he has published more than 80 scientific works. Some of the specific topics we discuss in this episode include: What does it mean to have a “kink orientation?” Is kink itself a sexual orientation? What are the five different components that make up a kink orientation? Why is it important to think about kink as running along a continuum instead of being a binary thing (i.e., kinky vs. vanilla)? You can click here to take the Kink Orientation Quiz for yourself. Got a sex question? Mark McCormack served in the Scotland, Edinburgh Mission from November of 2000 through November of 2002. Mark had a unique experience on the mission, which was split in half after breaking his back early in his mission while playing basketball. He returned home to have surgery and serve in Delta, Utah, before returning to Scotland to finish the last year. Mark had the attitude of work hard, play hard on the mission, with his funniest story coming from singing Christmas music in the large Glasgow mall to a crickets response. Mark currently lives in Bluffdale, Utah, with his wife and their 3 children. Recorded April 2, 2024

Andy and Joseph start out with what they are IN and OUT on this week. including gambling ads, Paddy Harrington's social media, and the absence of match play on the PGA Tour. Hughes Norton, a famed professional golf agent, then joins Andy to discuss the new book he co-authored with George Peper, Rainmaker. Hughes worked for Mark McCormack, founder of IMG, and was the agent for players like Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, and Bobby Clampett. They dive into stories from his career in golf highlighted in the book and some that didn't make the pages. Topics discussed include the origins of a world golf tour model, Tiger's early years and working with Earl Woods, the start of the OWGR, Seve Ballesteros' double swoosh visor, and much more. Finally, Joseph returns for recommendations.
Hughes Norton and George Peper, authors of RAINMAKER: Superagent Hughes Norton and the Money-Grab Explosion of Golf from Tiger to LIV and Beyond, join the LINKS Golf Podcast to chat about the book, dealing with golf's biggest power players, and the state of today's game. Norton was once one of the most powerful men in golf. During his tenure as head of the golf division of Mark McCormack's International Management Group (IMG), he was the lead agent for six world-number-one-ranked players, including both Greg Norman and Tiger Woods. Before Tiger ever struck a ball as a professional, Norton did deals with Nike and Titleist that brought him more than $60 million, a then-unprecedented sum for a professional athlete. Less than two years later—and for reasons never explained—Tiger fired Norton. McCormack then did the same, giving him a multi-million-dollar parachute tied to a 10-year non-compete clause and a gag order. Now, for the first time, Norton is talking—about his clients, his boss, and his role in fostering the era of unbridled greed that now threatens to destroy professional golf. Long-time golf super agent Hughes Norton has just released a book, "Rainmaker", detailing his history with some of the big names in the history of golf. Working with IMG, and founder Mark McCormack, he was the first agent for Tiger Woods, worked with Greg Norman, and many others. The book and conversation touches on the idea of LIV before LIV that McCormack had back in the 1960's. A lot of the conversation touches on what drove Tiger and Norman in particular, their similarities and differences, and the balance an agent must play in the lives of those they represent. In the episode, "On the Polycrisis with Mark McCormack: Psychiatric Coercion, Hegel, A.I. and Saving Humanity (S5, E13)," Mark begins with sharing his intimate experience with psychiatry and its oppressive structure. A peaceful protestor of 20 years, while on a hunger strike protesting the polycrisis, Mark describes how the institution overtook his life through forced hospitalization and a list of human rights violations. He speaks of his pressing class action lawsuit, which holds accountable the mental health care system in Canada with potential to go global.Mark also reveals his passion behind the German philosopher, G.W.F Hegel, whose work may pave the way to creatively and strategically confront head on the polycrisis, which includes climate change, artificial intelligence, and Crispr technology, among others. With the coming AI age and possible reality collapse in our future, Mark addresses the oncoming mental health crisis or possible mass psychosis that may emerge. He believes incorporating Hegel's philosophy into A.I. research on alignment issues, may help create a benevolent AGI, which can reach the only outcome with which humans can co-exist. Hegel arrived just before modern psychiatry took a more reductionist road, and returning to his holistic and spiritual philosophy may hold the answer for our future. Mark believes in this path so whole heartedly, that he has called out for experts in their fields to unite and claim as a team the upcoming 6 Nobel prizes to legitimize the seriousness of the situation we are currently facing today existentially.Bio:Mark McCormack is a philosophy enthusiast at the University Of Alberta. He is passionate about social justice and led a group named Make Poverty History for many years. His studies have ranged across all religions and systems including the German philosopher G.W.F Hegel. After a few thousand hours studying the Science Of Logic, Mark believes there is a way to create a peaceful revolution and New World Spirit for society which would require transformation of the mental healthcare system. Having gone on a hungerstrike as part of a union initiative of Uber drivers, Mark discovered deep fissures in the system which allowed his human rights to be violated in several ways. His goal now is to make this peaceful revolution a reality to address the escalating mental health crisis arising from reality collapse as the polycrisis continues.#polycrisis #artificialintelligence #realitycollapse #mentalhealth #mentalillness #Hegelianswhowanttochangetheworld #livingphilosophy #NobelsurprizeReferences:Nobel Surprize (10 hour No Cree Council)https://youtu.be/cKEtPIryrNYFollow Mark at:Facebook: www.facebook.com/peacefulrevolution23LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mmccormack23/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@spiritpeacefulrevolution3523Please visit my website at: http://www.notascrazyasyouthink.com/Don't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenConnect:Instagram: @ jengaita LinkedIn: @ jensicilianoTwitter: @ jsiciliano

Named the most powerful man in sports by Sports Illustrated in 1990, Mark McCormack founded the International Management Group in 1960. He started with Arnold Palmer and grew a sports management empire. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners, the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is well it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Summers & Zims Ad] Dave Young: Here at The Empire Builders Podcast. Stephen Semple, you gave me the topic for this podcast and I'm flummoxed. International Management Group. Well, it sounds very, very important. Stephen Semple: Well, it is. Dave Young: I mean, because they're international and they're managing, they're a group. Sometimes we talk about ourselves as the wizard of ads group. We've got some partners that just have their name and group after them. So I get it. Who are these people? Stephen Semple: Well, here's what's really cool about this podcast. Believe it or not International Management Group and cool. I'm going to put together. So watch me, watch me as I do this. Dave Young: Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Stephen Semple: It's actually an invention of an entire industry. We are going to actually witness the birth of an industry. That's pretty cool. A whole industry. So this business was founded by Mark McCormack in 1960, and it's now owned by a business called Endeavor. They bought it in 2013. It was sold to William Morris Endeavor for $2.3 billion. Dave Young: That's empire sized. Stephen Semple: That's empire size. So this guy started something that never existed before and ended up selling it for $2.3 billion. And there's 3000 employees in 25 countries. Dave Young: And I think you gave me a clue, but when you said Endeavor, it's a talent agency, right? Stephen Semple: Gold star. Ring the bell for Dave. Yes. Yes. That's exactly what it is. Dave Young: I somehow have heard of them, but these international folks. Stephen Semple: You hadn't never heard of them. Because what they do is sports management. Dave Young: Well, see if I were a sportsing fan, then I would've known that. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So there you go. So when Mark was young, he was a sports nut, absolute sports nut. And at the age of six, he got hit by a car and when he recovered from that, he was told by his doctor, you'll never fully recover. You can't do anymore sports. Sports are done. Now, his dad didn't view golf as a sport. So his dad bought him some golf clubs and said, hey, you can go play that. And this became his passion so much so that he qualified for the US Open in 1958. So the guy knew how to play the game. And when he was playing at Virginia College, he met another young golfer. And even though you're not a sports nut, you've probably heard of this guy, his name was Arnold Palmer. Dave Young: Oh yeah. I have his tea every now and then. Stephen Semple: I had a really special opportunity a number of years ago, I had a chance to play a little bit of golf with Arnold Palmer, Dave Young: Oh, no kidding. Stephen Semple: And I'll put a picture on the show notes of myself with Arnold Palmer. What it was is he was celebrating, his first professional victory was in Canada and he was back celebrating that. And I had an opportunity to participate in that. So that was pretty cool. But so basically one of the people that Mark met when he was at Virginia College was Arnold Palmer. Arnold Palmer headed off to be a professional golfer, Mark headed off to Yale Law School. Then he became a lawyer in Cleveland, but they kept in touch. They were buddies,

The Smartphone: Nearly 90 per cent of British adults now own a smartphone and ownership among those aged 55 and over has soared from 55 per cent in 2019 to 70 per cent in 2020. Laurie Taylor explores the ways in which this ubiquitous object is transforming everyday life, from China to Ireland, & considers its impact on intimate relationships. He's joined by Daniel Miller, Professor of Anthropology at UCL and co-author of a new study involving 11 anthropologists who each spent 16 months living in communities in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, focusing on the take up of smartphones by older people. They found that smartphones are technology for everyone, not just for the young, and are transformed by their users & national context. Also, Mark McCormack, Professor of Sociology at the University of Roehampton, considers the impact of smartphones on relationships in the UK. Are they keeping couples together when apart, and driving them apart when together? Producer: Jayne Egerton
This episode we hear from Fred Ridley, a well-recognized partner at the law firm Foley & Lardner LLP. He is also the current chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and its annual tournaments, which includes The Masters in April. Fred is also well known for being the last US Amateur champion not to turn pro - having won in 1975. He grew up in Lakeland, Florida, learning to play golf on municipal courses. He went on to play collegiate golf at the University of Florida on a team that eventually won a national title, played once and served twice as Team captain in the Walker Cup, and played once and served as team captain once in the World Amateur Team Championship. He has also served in various executive roles for the USGA including President in the mid-2000s. So - incredible record - why not turn pro? Fred made a firm decision at a young age to work toward a career in law, and points to his role model and Augusta National founder, Bobby Jones, as his inspiration. After graduating from Stetson Law, Fred went to work for IMG, Mark McCormack's sports agency in Cleveland. Eventually, he came back to Tampa - in that transition he stopped playing competitive golf, dug into work, and found his way to Foley & Lardner where he has been since 2001. Fred and I discuss his foundations in golf, his transition from being known as a golfer to becoming known as a working professional, the commonalities in his executive roles on and off the golf course, and his definition of “grow the game.”
