Hunting dogs hold a special place in my heart. There's something about seeing the fire in a working dog's eyes, the purest of passion, not just for the kill but for the hunt. Hunting dogs fill a niche role no matter their quarry and they do it with an unmatched passion and willingness to please their master. This week we're sitting down to talk about retrievers, and how Don Goode, owner of Labrador Outfitters got his start in the world of duck dogs.HangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Dayton Archers Club- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/Mention UPO and get 10% off your membershipBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoors

Hosts Louise and Michelle are joined by Amy, founder of Track and Trail Canine Outfitters, for an inspiring conversation about how one dog changed her life and led her into canicross, community‑building and launching a specialist canine gear shop. Amy shares her personal journey with Max, a rescue cocker spaniel with behavioural challenges and boundless energy, and how discovering canicross transformed both of them — from anxious walks filled with zig‑zags and reactivity to focused runs, confidence building and partnership. Rather than take on the cheapest gear she finds on the high street, Amy's experiences with a lead breaking under stress inspired her to research strength testing and purposeful design. This leads to the creation of her shop — a place that prioritises tested quality, and supports owners with nervous or reactive dogs through private shopping sessions and accessible advice. What actually separates a professional guide from a good hunter?Cliff and Jay Scott break down how real experience changes judgment. Calm under pressure, controlling variables, and why most missed shots are process failures. Not shooter failures. The Tricer micro-panning device we discuss at the end of the video, Use CLIFFG for 10% off: https://tricer.com/products/tricer-360From there, the discussion moves into distance, animal awareness, and the concept of the “bubble.” Cliff and Jay explain why getting closer is not always better, especially for wary species like Coues deer. Staying outside an animal's awareness buys time, reduces mistakes, and creates higher-probability shots. This is not about extreme distance. It is about efficiency and control. The back half of the episode shifts into gear and optics. They break down real use cases for image-stabilized binoculars and spotting scopes, where they help, where they don't, and why tripods are not going anywhere. The conversation stays grounded in actual field application, not marketing claims. The episode closes on perspective. On Episode 171 of the Check Your Six podcast, I had the absolute pleasure of talking with 20 year veteran Mitch Vazquez from Southern Colorado about his business Rugged Mountain Outfitters and more importantly his non-profit, Heroes Harvest. Always love talking with fellow veterans, especially those that are doing work like Mitch and helping those veterans that are having issues and struggles, cope with their circumstances. We talked about the conversation he had with a fellow service member before he retired that basically called him out on being a father and husband. That led to a 30+ day walk about in the mountains that changed the trajectory of his life and his family. What they do at Heroes Harviest is not sit with a bunch of others veterans in a meeting talking about your issues, it is getting out and facing those challenges in the wilderness. I did ask if Air Force veterans would be able to handles something like this with no room service or comfortable beds but he seems to think maybe they could handle it! He shared a story of a vet that was ready to become a "22 Per Day Statistic" when he received the call from Heroes Harvest that he had been accepted to the program and passed along some great advice...don't let the last 20 years of service define what you are going to do for the next 20 years. A good conversation today about ice fishing today with Alex Welter of River Bent Outfitters. We talked about current ice conditions and how the fish are biting. Both have been challenging at times. Jeff Smith and Carson Odegard sit down with Dwight Jones, founder of Closaway Outfitters (Uruguay) and CEO of Okmulgee Fields Inc., to unpack a boutique, American-run operation built for wild birds, predictable shoots, and no-surprises pricing. From why shore blinds mean no waders, to how legal baiting and lead shape reliable duck hunts, to the perdiz over dogs that steal the show—this is a clean, honest look at South American wingshooting done right. Learn travel logistics (LATAM into Montevideo, 2h40 lodge transfer, hunt the day you arrive), what's truly wild vs. planted, and how Closaway keeps pressure low by resting ponds and limiting hunts. More at closaway.com/about-usEpisode highlightsWhy Uruguay, not just Argentina: high-quality mixed bag (ducks, dove/pigeon, wild perdiz) with shorter drives and afternoon duck hunts that “feel like a war at first light.”Predictable ducks, lower pressure: 30–50 ponds prepped each season, legal baiting, and ponds hunted only 2–3 times to keep birds finishing.All-inclusive, transparent pricing: airport transfers, daily gun rental, laundry, Wi-Fi, meals, and 125 shells/day included—no surprise add-ons at checkout.Guns, shells & safety: quality Beretta/Browning/Bennelli inventory, Magtech ammo, and shore setups that skip horses and chest-deep wades.Species & export notes: Rosybill, White-faced Whistling Duck, Speckled Teal—plus context on limited export rules for skins.Food & culture: Italian/Spanish-inspired meals, cook your harvest, and lodge life that feels like visiting a friend—not a hotel lobby. If you're curious about a wild, fair-chase South American hunt—without the shell-bill sticker shock—this one lays out the full playbook so you know exactly what you're getting into.

#855 Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/855 Presented by: San Juan Rodworks, On DeMark Lodge, Four Wheel Campers Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors If you've ever stood knee-deep in a Western river wondering whether a trout spey rod might change your whole approach, this conversation with Howard Cole will get your wheels turning. Howard's spent a lifetime shaping flies, shaping cast loops, and shaping anglers at JD High Country Outfitters — and he brings a river-smart perspective on everything from trout spey dry flies to yellow sally emergers. Trout spey tips show up often in this episode, and they sneak into almost every story he tells from the Snake to the South Fork. By the end of this episode, you'll probably be digging through your fly box looking for your own emerger patterns — or maybe even picking up a short spey rod for the next drift. Send us a textWhat if the quietest move you make is the one that matters most? We sit down with Isome Sapp from Trophy Hunting Blinds to explore how a simple idea—windows that open silently in any weather—evolved into a full system that solves noise, scent, and comfort without gimmicks. Drawing on decades of outfitting experience, we look at why hunters miss shots in real life and how a felt-lined aluminum track, five percent tint, and thoughtful ergonomics give you room to adjust, film, and shoot without getting busted. We break down the build from the ground up: LP composite siding that shrugs off water and time, a 30-year rubber roof that kills rain noise, and tight seals that keep scent inside and drafts out. The seven-foot octagon with 24-inch windows provides true 360-degree visibility, so you stop fidgeting and start observing. Field tests include gusty days with deer feeding at 20 yards, dry interiors after ice-storm hauling, and long sits that feel more like a plan than a punishment. Whether you're bowhunting a food plot or running a camera on a tripod, the interior space, carpet, and insulation make all-day patience possible.Access and customization matter just as much. We cover wood and metal stands at practical heights, inside-opening doors for safety, and options like double handrails, wide doors, and ramps for wheelchair users. Outfitters can specify window heights for seated bow shots or standing rifle setups, and re-order the same spec every time. Behind the scenes, lean manufacturing and smart jigs keep the fit and finish high while pricing stays fair—earning trust from hunters who've tried to DIY and from guides who need durable, quiet blinds that just work.Ready to rethink your hide? Hear the design choices, the real-world tests, and why so many hunters switch after one sit. Here at Christian Outdoors, we relish the opportunity to highlight other ministries. Whether their focus is on Veterans and First Responders, or "regular folks". We share the responsibility to bring others into the kingdom. Today is no different. Today's guest is Clark Bartee, and Clark has a passion for Pastors and church leaders and has a ministry geared towards helping them to decompress and get away by flyfishing in Eastern Tennessee. Clark Bartee is the executive director and founder of High Ground Outfitters, but the most important role is being a child of God, husband to Hannah, and father to Boone. On this episode, James Nash returns to do what he does better than just about anyone in this community, and that's bring his immense curiosity to bear on a variety of topics. You'll hear a harrowing hunting story from his first trip to Africa, his lessons learned over his elk guiding career, that to date, has resulted in roughly 150 bull elk tags cut, his perspectives on the gear that really matters, and why when push comes to shove, the best thing you can do is just get started, whether that's in hunting or some other goal you've set your sights on. NOTABLE QUOTES: “My best guess is that 50% - 60% of elk that are hit with arrows are not recovered and it could be higher than that. When I talk to outfitters, their experience is about 50% and that's with professional guides who are going to be looking extremely hard for those animals.” @6ranchoutfitters --------------------------- DEALS & PARTNERS: For over 100 years Leica has set the standard for premium optics. #818 Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/818 Presented By: Waters West In today's episode of In the Bucket podcast, we're joined by Trevor Covich and Ed Fuhrken of Waters West Fly Fishing Outfitters. Both are long-time stewards of Pacific Northwest steelhead, guiding anglers while battling issues like habitat loss, hatchery impacts, and river access. They talk about what it's like behind the fly shop counter: the tension between preserving wild runs and serving a growing demand for steelhead experiences. You'll hear stories about closures, managing stock versus wild fish, and how trout tactics don't always translate to steelhead crisis zones. Trevor and Ed also reveal the subtle art of timing your swings, staying wet when it counts, and treating every steelhead encounter like it matters—not just for you, but for the rivers downstream. Along the way, you'll pick up practical advice: what fly anglers can do to reduce mortality, how to engage with managers and neighbors about river health, and why education and access matter just as much as gear. If you care about fish, fair futures for rivers, and how fly fishing can be part of the solution, this episode lands hard and hopeful. #818 Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/818

Summer is a busy time for road trips and travel on the North Shore. But data from the Department of Transportation shows that fewer people are crossing from Canada into Minnesota. This June, there were about 16 percent fewer people traveling in by car compared to last June. That's about 26,000 fewer people who came to visit our state. Earlier this year, MPR News host Angela Davis and Minnesota Now guest host Chris Farrell traveled to the Minnesota-Canada border to talk about how the U.S. tariffs on Canada have affected the relationship between the two nations. Minnesota Now is checking in on how that relationship may have slowed summer traffic into the states. John Fredrikson is an owner of the Gunflint Lodge & Outfitters in Grand Marais, and Kirsten Brune is a manager at the restaurant My Sister's Place also in Grand Marais. They spoke to Farrell about the changes they are seeing.
