An MOU and an agreement signed by CEIBS on Jan 10, 2018 are expected to help boost business ties between China and France. CEIBS signed an MOU with the Charles de Gaulle Foundation to set up the Charles de Gaulle Chair in Global Leadership at CEIBS and enter into a strategic partnership with the Foundation. The chair will be held by Former Prime Minister of France Jean-Pierre Raffarin, who is a Member of the CEIBS Board. The signing ceremony was attended by Gaetan Messin, who is Science Attaché of the French Consulate General in Shanghai and an expert in AI, as a show of the French government’s support for the collaboration. “We live in an increasingly complex international environment. China and France are playing increasingly important roles in the international arena, so the signing of this agreement is a significant event as leadership is important for both political and business leaders,” said CEIBS President Professor Li Mingjun. He also noted the Chinese admiration for Charles de Gaulle who – working with China’s Mao Zedong – was instrumental in establishing diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1964. “I believe the Charles de Gaulle Chair in Leadership at CEIBS will help our two countries play an even more important role in the international arena,” added President Li. Meanwhile during a seminar headlined by French Member of Parliament Olivier Veran, a member of President Emmanuel Macron’s delegation on his first official visit to China, CEIBS and the Center for Prospective and Strategic Studies (CEPS), France’s longest running think tank, signed an agreement to set up the CEIBS+CEPS Shanghai Club. Its focus will be on promoting cooperation between China and France in AI, VI, Smart Health Care, Smart City, New energy, etc. CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan sees it as an excellent platform through which to further deepen ties between China and France, as well as the business communities of both countries. The events were attended by Members of the de Gaulle Foundation and the CEPS, CEIBS leaders, alumni, students and staff, along with representatives from the Chinese and French business communities. The Munich stop of CEIBS 3rd Europe Forum 2017 focused on the topic Belt and Road Initiative: How Germany Benefits from China's Economic Growth. With the global economy in a slow recovery phase, regional cooperation has become a driver of economic growth. In response to economic globalization, China introduced its Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to boost the prosperity of China and participating countries by focusing on economic cooperation through cross-border direct investment. During the forum, experts shared their perspective on the characteristics and trends of China's outbound investment in light of the Belt and Road Initiative. Germany has long been a favoured destination for Chinese investors due to its investment climate and the complementary economic advantages between the two countries. Given this solid foundation for cooperation, how will China and Germany move forward on investments to continue further developing industrial integration and complementarities? Will the synergy between China's “Internet Plus” initiative and Germany's “Industry 4.0” strategy create new opportunities for cooperation? CEIBS and CHKD invited top-level officials and experts from China and Germany, as well as a delegation of Chinese entrepreneurs and investors for this China-Germany Dialogue. The forum combined discussions centred on investment with case studies, providing insights into new business models and prospects for China-Germany cooperation as well as opportunities for interaction with enterprises from the two countries. Keynote speakers included Jiang Jianqing, Chairman of the vitally important Sino-CEE Fund and former Chairman of ICBC; Romano Prodi, the former Prime Minister of Italy and former President of the European Commission; and CEIBS Vice President and Dean Prof. Ding Yuan.

In the coming one or two decades CEIBS Vice President and Dean Professor Ding Yuan predicts we’ll see at least US$ 100 billion in outbound investment each year from China. What motivates Chinese companies’ global ambitions? Which deals make sense? What are the challenges in making these cross-border mergers and acquisitions work?In a talk recorded at the CEIBS Europe Forum in London on July 6, 2017, Professor Ding shares some of the findings from more than 30 case studies done by the CEIBS Centre for the Globalization of Chinese Companies that explore Chinese outbound investments across a wide range of industries and countries. As he explains in his talk, when they began their research, the CEIBS faculty found that the frameworks for globalization followed by Western multinationals do not apply to Chinese companies going global. Their reasons for pursuing foreign acquisitions and joint ventures, and the way they manage them are quite different. He explains the differences and provides some practical examples in this talk.To learn more about CEIBS 2017 Europe Forums in London, Paris, Munich & Warsaw, see here.

Chinese conglomerate Fosun Group’s acquisition of the French resort company Club Med, and the acquisition of the UK department store chain House of Fraser by China’s Sanpower Group are both successful examples of the unique ‘light touch’ approach that many Chinese companies take in managing their overseas acquisitions. CEIBS Vice President & Dean Ding Yuan weighs in on the benefits of this approach, and senior executives from these companies share their experiences to illustrate why it has worked in their cases. Managing Director of International Business Development at Deloitte Mr. David Percival moderates this discussion which was recorded at the CEIBS Europe Forum in London on July 6, 2017 at a roundtable titled “Mergers & Acquisitions: Generous Returns from the Chinese Market”.
