A former Prime Minister's backing the view that large-scale government housing ownership like Kainga Ora is problematic. A report by The New Zealand Initiative finds the Government's ownership of 77,000 state houses, has maintenance costs nearly twice that of a private landlord. It finds it also doesn't respond quickly enough to issues like rent arrears, and troublesome tenants. Sir Bill English told Mike Hosking his independent review panel into the agency found similar issues. He says the point of social housing is to improve the lives of the tenants, so it means focusing on the people, and who owns the houses, is less important. In this episode of Straight Talk, I sit down with former Prime Minister John Howard — Australia’s second-longest-serving PM — for an unfiltered conversation about leadership, politics, and the lessons that shaped his life. We start from the beginning: his early years in Earlwood, his education and early professional life, and how his interest in politics led him from a legal career into public office. John reflects on his early parliamentary years, his challenges as Treasurer, and the tax reforms that changed the nation. We discuss the introduction of the GST, his gun law reforms, and his relationships with world leaders, before turning to the media’s influence, recent election outcomes, and the state of leadership today. In classic Howard style, he opens up about stability in government, Australia’s immigration policy, and his personal passions — from sport to family life. Few people know the pressures of running Israel like Ehud Olmert. He was prime minister during the 2006 Lebanon war, in peace talks with the Palestinians in 2008 and (went) through a political crisis that ended with his resignation on corruption charges. Since leaving office, he has become one of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's fiercest critics, calling for him to face trial for war crimes. On this episode, we ask the former prime minister what he really thinks of Israel's current government, its extremist ministers and if Mr. Netanyahu's leadership has pushed Israel into dangerous isolation, even among its closest allies.

The sun came out in Britain for about five minutes so Marina and Jemma thought they'd better begin this episode with that incredible news. Maybe blue sky (not the social media platform) will take the edge of the new world order? But first, seeing as the news is borderline dystopian and jaw-droppingly surreal, it's only natural that the BBC should be focusing on Rachel Reeves' LinkedIn and whether or not she put £49 on expenses 100 years ago. TOTALLY NORMAL COUNTRY. Meanwhile, Trump appears to be blaming Ukraine for the fact that Russia invaded them. Worse than that, he's not just a Putin apologist, he's a fan. A fascinating clip of Former Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull on what he observed in-person when Trump met Putin illustrates this perfectly. Sadly, in the UK we have our own apologists, none more so ill-informed than Richard Tice who was taken to task by Julia Hartley Brewer for comparing the situation to Northern Ireland. Trump's appeasement has put Boris Johnson in a bind. How do you support Trump and Zelensky at the same time? You can only do so if you have zero integrity. So he manages perfectly fine.
