We discussed a few things including:1. Their career journeys2. The mental health crisis3. Jen's vision/promly4. Danielle's research and vision for Thrive Genetics + The Child Code5. Trends, challenges and opportunities in healthJennifer Libby has been a psychotherapist for over 20 years treating at-risk adolescents. Jennifer has been sounding the alarm for many years about the rapidly emerging youth mental health crisis exacerbated by less than responsible social media platforms. Frustrated by the slow movement by the social media industry to “do better” for kids, and in response to her own family tragedy, Jennifer founded Promly as a healthier alternative to legacy social media. Jennifer's advocacy for better treatment of youth by Big Tech was well received recently in Washington, D.C. where she spoke to a large group of U.S. House Representatives regarding her on-going efforts (informed by client experience and Promly's Gen Z advisory board) to have YouTube remove and/or disrupt the algorithm for the “how to tie a noose” and “how to hang yourself” videos that provide step by step video instructions often created by teens themselves. Of note, suicide by hanging in children and teens has increased by exponential numbers in the last 10 years. It is examples like this that drive Promly to re-imagine how social media can “do better” for teens. Jennifer also speaks publicly on a variety of other mental health concerns impacting teens and has provided consultation with numerous agencies including Center for Humane Tech (producers of the “The Social Dilemma”) on best practices for teens and tech. ---Danielle Dick, Ph.D. is the Greg Brown Endowed Chair of Neuroscience and a Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers University, where she directs the Rutgers Addiction Research Center. When you watch ICF's videos on Youtube, what you see publicly are representatives from a city celebrating when their city is named Intelligent Community of the Year. Sometimes, you see Eindhoven representatives from The Netherlands donning red shirts in celebration or Columbus representatives from Ohio storming the stage behind their mayor like a football club. What you do not see is the incredibly hard work done by a group of people from around the world to analyze the information from these cities, assess it and judge them for you, the world's media and other aspiring places. They are the ICF Analysts and Jurors, the heart and soul – and the brains – of the ICF Awards program. Meet Niurka CastanedaNiurka Castaneda grew up in Cuba and came from a family of entrepreneurs and artists. Her grandfather was a poet, and her parent's Cuban entrepreneurs. They were very resourceful people, which is why she believes she has always been enterprising and artistic. She loves to talk about art, music, books and all things that provide smiles and hope. She loves to travel the world, learn and go on adventures. She is a Veteran Entrepreneur, a filmmaker, an author, a logistician, a photographer, a media producer/host (TV / Podcast / Film) & the founder of AMOR Umbrella…I guess you can call her a “Multipotentialite.” She felt the call to serve her new home, and a year after arriving in the US, she joined the Army to serve her great country. The military offered her many new experiences, and she learned skills like resilience, flexibility, self-motivation, determination, self-discipline, goal setting, and risk tolerance. It was only natural to transition from the military to becoming an Entrepreneur. Niurka Castaneda leveraged her education combined with her military skills and 20+ years in the field of logistics, in addition to personal life experiences, to create her company AMOR Umbrella, which once upon a time started as a class project at a Global Supply Chain Program at Miami Dade College and quickly became a life-changing endeavour that ignited an entrepreneurial spirit and a journey of creativity, problem-solving, personal empowerment, constant innovation and evolution.Entrepreneurship was her way to find a new identity after transitioning from the military and building a brand out a heart-shaped bright red umbrella. It was a defining moment because it unleashed her imagination. She is the author of the “How to Launch the Business that Fits Your Lifestyle”© series (HLFYL) (From Idea to Implementation©, “A Better Business Launch Guide©” and It's All About Time Management© that was created with the goal of helping 1M+ new entrepreneurs launch their dream business, and teach them the skills and strategies needed to scale and succeed in business. She is the co-author of Venture into the Everglades©, which seeks to highlight the benefits of recreational, therapeutic adventures by taking chances, exploring new environments, and connecting trauma survivors on a deep soul level, and it helps unlock healing, discovery, history, and education. Amor Umbrella has evolved to become a global media heart-centered enterprise that focuses on serving the military-veteran community thru programs, products & services that educate, entertain and empower our community. When our founder found that misinformation of available resources was and still is an issue for active military and veterans alike, so often in the dark of where to go for that much-needed help, she was there too. The reason why she took it upon herself to be a bridge builder and help correct the gap by launching her own Veteran - Entrepreneur Focus media shows & events: Umbrellas of Hope TV & Founders Time Podcast. In our veteran - Entrepreneur focus tv show, Umbrellas of Hope, She personally curates the content and the accuracy of the information and resources shared and bridges the gap between veterans and the civilian world by initiating and facilitating conversations of Hope, Empowerment and Creativity and avenues to elevate the experience of transitioning out the military. Senior Products, Innovation & Entrepreneurship - John Zapolski The Not Old Better Show, Business Buildout Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Business Buildout interview series on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang and today's show is brought to you by MD Hearing Aid. As we in The Not Old Better Show audience know well, age can be an advantage. And, today, entrepreneurship isn't just for the young. Experts say that more adults over age 60 are starting their own businesses than ever before. And, as a matter of fact, older adults are finding that starting a business can be the perfect way to turn a lifetime of experience into something meaningful, take control of their time, counter workplace ageism, and, in some cases, make a lot more money. There are challenges, though. Lots of them, but that's not surprising. If it was easy, we'd all be doing it. One who has done it is our guest today, John Zapolski. He's here today to talk about the myths of senior-related products, how to research senior opportunities, and how to motivate yourselves to do what you love, alongside people you respect, in later life. John Zapolski is the founder and CEO of Alive Ventures. As a serial social entrepreneur, John has long worked at the intersection of new ventures, philanthropy, design, and culture. He previously co-founded and led several new social purpose ventures, including Fonderie 47 and STEAM Carnival. John Zapolski founded and created Alive Ventures to bring focus, creative energy, and new investment to the aspects of life worth looking forward to as we age. We're talking about how to design new products for the older age community, market opportunities in the older age demographic, and assumptions and misconceptions about building a startup targeted at older adults…what you think about this may be wrong…stay tuned…Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show Business Buildout interview series on radio and podcast, John Zapolski. My thanks to MD Hearing Aid for sponsoring today's show. Please support our sponsors and learn more at our website, NotOld-Better.com. My thanks to John Zapolski for his generous time, expertise and inspiration. My thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience on radio and podcast. Please be well, be safe, be kind to one another and let's talk about better…The Not Old Better Show on radio and podcast. See you next week…thanks, everybody.
Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. David Schonthal is an award-winning Professor of Strategy, Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Kellogg School of Management where he teaches courses on new venture creation, design thinking, healthcare innovation and creativity. Along with his colleague Loran Nordgren, David is one of the originators of Friction Theory – a ground-breaking methodology that explains why even the most promising innovations and change initiatives often struggle to gain traction with their intended audiences – and what to do about it. This work is popularized in David's Wall Street Journal and National Bestselling book, The Human Element: Overcoming the Resistance That Awaits New Ideas (Wiley). THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… people who want to innovate businesses products and services with new ideas that put people first. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… Whitney doesn't think the term “The Great Resignation” accurately describes the workplace culture shift, rather she believes in “The Great Aspiration” - the idea that people are aspiring to jobs that give them greater fulfillment and more opportunities for learning and growth. At the heart of any business lies a product that helps people and it's our job as business leaders to focus on the humanity these products can deliver. But sometimes there are challenges we face in implementing new ideas - what David calls “frictions” - that stand in the way of innovations. Ultimately, he believes that by identifying those sources and addressing the issues, we can pave the way for growth and progress. WHAT I LOVE MOST… David understands that at the core of customer service, design thinking must place the customer first. Human-centered design must consider not only the functional value the product brings, but also the social and emotional value for people as well. Thanks for joining us on another episode of Government in Plain Language with your host, MaBinti Yillah. This episode, we're talking to Conrad Hollomon, Senior Technical PM at Unity Technologies, a leader in creating and operating 3D content in real-time. Conrad's journey to entrepreneurship took him through multiple potential pathways, including playing gigs as a musician, and the next morning standing in formation with the Army ROTC. In doing so, he positioned himself to hold two careers-one as an infantry officer and the other blending his passion for technology and music. The biggest challenge, Conrad notes, is the translation between different cultures. Having the agility to execute, partnered with the flexibility that comes with certain roles, makes for innovation at the highest degree. Conrad works with the military from a tech perspective. At the junction of innovation and entrepreneurship, he was able to help solve challenges that the Dept. of Justice faces every day. That developed the two main pillars of success for teams he worked on: diversity of thought and psychological safety. Being able to incorporate different perspectives and backgrounds is key to innovation. The biggest part is the team's ability to communicate effectively with everyone, the ability to see and respect the different perspectives, and value what everybody on that team provides. Organizational transformation on a large scale can look two different ways. The first, Conrad illustrates, is when a team of innovators--the brightest of the bright in an organization, are given room to innovate. This is about the autonomy, purpose, and mastery of the work they do. It also requires the organization to follow suit in culture. If there are innovators at a non-innovative place, there will be clashes of interest. Transformation also happens quietly. Often the biggest shifts don't come from a big splash, they come from a small, highly motivated group of innovators. There is always risk in giving a team a budget and letting them run with it, but the only way to invite success is by allowing them to work. The challenges here come with communicating the right thing at the right time in the right level of detail. Socializing new ideas is a difficult hurdle for innovation. This change is often reactionary, not intentional. This has much to do with the size of the organization. The bigger the organization, the more specific the tasks. There has to be something chasing that organization to get full alignment on change. Urgency can get slowed at dozens of points, so getting the change to happen can be a hard mountain to move. Conrad understands the importance of seeing other perspectives. It's about getting in line with the leadership, those who are looking to connect dots, and the execution, those who are focused on one dot. When change is being looked at, the people aspect is often overlooked by large organizations. Success happens when leadership is looked at as its own skill. What makes a leader is people's trust in you. This happens with training and investing in people first. Demonstrating through the organization's actions that they are committed to their team's personal success motivates those leaders. In government, we often have leaders who are mission driven competing with those who aren't. There is a massive technology gap between the government and private sectors. Catching the government up could mean building a team to grow alongside current processes to help introduce new steps. There are people who will view this as a threat. It falls on leadership to find a way to transition team members from one way to the next. It's no wonder there is distrust of the government when we consider the generations raised understanding the government is either malicious, incompetent, or lazy. This is combated by electing members of the government who represent and lead the charge as civic servants. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mabinti-yillah/message

While Covid-19 has offered a devastating blow to the world economy, it's also accelerated digital transformation across a slew of industries. This has created exciting new opportunities for innovation in tech, which is often criticized for a lack of diversity in Silicon Valley and beyond. But while many firms have stepped up their inclusion efforts, some still argue the sector has a long way to go before it reflects society at large. Nigerian-raised June Angelides is trying to change this. A former banker turned early-stage investor, she is working hard to help entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds gain easier access to venture capital. It's a mission that certainly hasn't gone unnoticed. The Financial Times has named her among the most influential minority leaders in UK tech and she's even been honored by Queen Elizabeth II. In this episode, June shares her journey innovating in spaces that many overlook and how she is creating opportunities for entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds to do the same.
