Bobby took a trip out to Bar 1661 - Winner of the Bar of the Year Awards 2022. There he chatted to the owner, Dave Mulligan, about what makes his establishment so unique and tried some of their wares.

Before Irish whiskey as we know it today, there was a different spirit, the precursor to whiskey, the spirit that every house in Ireland had a drop of or participated in the making of. I’m talking of course about Poitín (pronounced pot-cheen). If you think the story of Irish whiskey is the greatest rollercoaster ride in the history of Irish spirits, then you’ve not yet heard the turbulent, thrilling, story of Poitín.

With renewed enthusiasm in Irish whiskey, it is not surprising that interest in Ireland's other national spirit, poitín, has not been far behind. With a history that goes back hundreds of years, this once illegal spirit has always been seen as the drink of the people. To understand the spirit better, its history and future, we talked to Dave Mulligan from Bán Poitín about craft distilling, the potency of poitín, and of course the cocktails you can make with it.
