WAR on TOWNSVILLE: 29th. July 1942. In the early morning hours of the 29th. July 1942 a Japanese aircraft dropped eight x 250 lbs. bombs, supposedly on Townsville Q. Seven of the bombs fell in Cleveland Bay and the eighth bomb fell on Oonoomba, a suburb of Townsville. Thankfully the damage caused was a crater and the destruction of one palm tree. I, with other Members of TARC, operated two stations on ANZAC Day 2024 , Net Control by Gavin, VK4ZZ from the Green St. Headquarters. A lot of work has gone into dealings with the three levels of Government: TV and other media interviews with our Local opposition Member have all helped with securing written documentation of future support to preserve the Site in "some" form from destruction. Our transmission on the Anniversary of the Bombing, 29th. July 2024 from the Site will Start: 2.00 pm EST finish: 4.00 pm EST Freq. 7.100 LSB. Net Control VK4ZZ - Gavin TARC H'quarters. TARC Members to erect a portable station are all welcome. All welcome. I ask that we be inundated with DX stations from all over our Great Country and give us moral support. LEST WE FORGET. Kind regards, Ray & Wendy Schinkel Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. round my part of the world, despite what has been forecast, we are having delightful weather with blue skies, fluffy clouds and cool mornings. Only a few weeks go, I was reporting that we were in for a drier winter and a warmer one. With most days getting into single figure temperatures as the sun comes out I really can't say it has been warmer than average. Just like getting the sunspot figures, we will learn the truth as time goes on. I haven't been noticing that portable activity has increased, now that the rain has eased, and I wonder if many amateurs are prepared for activities away from the shack. There seems to be a level of people following the POTA and SOTA activities but maybe my sources aren't getting the whole picture. Here are ways of flying the flag for amateur radio when we appear in public and our equipment stands out like a super hero costume to the lay visitors. I am from the era when you caught up on the stories of fictional heroes at places like the barber shop with a better selection of recent but not new on the shelf magazines and comic. It made a trip to the barber much more entertaining than the outdated and dog eared collection in the doctors' surgery waiting room. This brings up the idea that has been raised over the years of getting places such as these to have material such as Amateur Radio magazine added to the collection of 4X4, fishing and other coffee table material available to read. There are plenty of places that we all visit periodically and where a variety of the local population also pass through. Just think of business and health services that have waiting rooms and here is an opportunity to spark the interest of someone new. There are is the fact that we don't currently have any body which will supervise the donation of material. This is something that surely can be rectified. Similarly, we don't have promotional material which could be distributed and placed for free in these venues. I am sure that in my region which is popular with tourists, that camping areas with areas such as laundries would appreciate some nice material for their clients to browse. What I am suggesting is that there are many opportunities to spread the word and even demonstrate our passion to the passing people who come for other reasons. The mechanic's waiting room benefits from the caravaning and camping magazines, along with the fishing and boating material. The hairdresser doesn't only have fashion on display and what you find at a dentist and doctor's surgery can be an odd mishmash of reading material which is no doubt dictated by what is unsold at the newsagencies. So who can think of a good way of putting something like this into action? I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 9. Activities and events from Friday July 5 through Thursday July 18 Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 9, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday July 5 through Thursday July 18. There are many activities and events in the Sandwich Weekly Podcast and I’m always looking for new ways to make it easier for you to find what you’re interested in. If you’re using a podcast player that supports chapter markers such as, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or the Apple Podcast app, you can skip directly to any day in the audio file. This, unfortunately, isn’t a feature that’s available on the podcasts web page. On the podcast web page you can scroll down the show notes to look for particular days of activities. You can also use the standard search keys (ctrl-f on pc or cmd-f on Mac) to enter your search terms. This week I introduced a new feature that will, hopefully, make the show notes easier to navigate. At the top of the show notes there are shortcuts to go directly to a particular day in the notes. This way you won’t need to scroll down the list to find the day in which you are interested. Here’s the schedule of activities and events for the next two weeks… Friday July 5 Saturday July 6 Sunday July 7 Monday July 8 Tuesday July 9 Wednesday July 10 Thursday July 11 Friday July 12 Saturday July 13 Sunday July14 Monday July 15 Tuesday July 16 Wednesday July 17 Thursday July 18 Friday July 5 American Legion Fish Fry- 5 to 7:30 pm Friday at the Sheridan American Legion Post 729. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 7. Activities and events from Friday June 21 through Thursday July 4 Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 7, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday June 21 through Thursday July 4. And now, this weeks tidbit of Sandwich history… It’s not commonly known, the Sandwich area played an instrumental role in the Underground Railroad. In case your knowledge of 19th century American History is a bit weak, the Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early to mid–1800s. It was used by African-American slaves to escape into free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and others who were sympathetic to their cause. The William Eddy home on Somonauk Creek was one of the underground stations (or safe houses), as were the Beveridge home in Somonauk and the Stewards’ home in Plano. Escaping slaves usually entered Illinois from Missouri and traveled north to Chicago on their way to freedom in Canada. One route passed along the present line of the Burlington Railway. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 5. Activities and events from Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 5, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Before I begin, I would like to thank all the listeners who have taken the time to visit and like the podcasts Facebook page and those who have sent some wonderful comments. Remember that this podcast is for you and if you have any suggestions for improvement, please send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. A special thanks to Geoff Penman who corrected the historical tidbit from last weeks episode. If you remember, I said that Davis Lake extended from Veterans Memorial Park to, what is now, Gletty Road. I didn’t believe that was possible since the buildings on Main Street existed prior to Davis lake being drained. I mistakenly thought that the Park referred to Veterans Park which is across from City Hall. Actually the lake extended from Sandwich Memorial Park to Gletty Road. Sandwich Memorial Park lies west of the YMCA and has an entrance on Water Street. This weeks tidbit of Sandwich history is about what once was an old train car and is now the Bull Moose Bar and Grille. The train car is a former Pullman Palace car that was built in 1893, at a cost of $25,000, and initially shown at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago later that year. It was placed into service by the Burlington (now the Burlington Northern Sante Fe) railroad and was part of their special “Pride of Burlington” train. In 1904, the train car was given to President Teddy Roosevelt to use during his presidential campaign and returned to the Burlington railway after Roosevelt was elected. The train car was put back into use for another presidential election in 1908 as William Howard Taft’s official transportation carriage. Taft won the election. During the next election, Roosevelt ran on his own Progressive Party (or “Bull Moose” Party) ticket Figuring the train car was good luck since it was used by the last two winners of Presidential elections, he got the car from the Burlington railway and used it to criss-cross the country during his campaign. Well, Teddy Roosevelt lost that election to Woodrow Wilson and the train car was returned to the railroad. The train car continued on the Burlington line until it was retired in the early 1930’s. In 1934, Sandwich resident Henry Tattersal bought the train car for $75 dollars and moved it from California to Sandwich, placing it on the southwest corner of Main and Church Streets. He redesigned the train car as a diner and opened it later that year and called it “The Diner”. In 1935, a man by the name of Wright bought the diner and moved it across the street to its present day location next to a house and renamed it “Wright’s Diner”. The train car diner has gone through a number of owners and name changes over the years, eventually incorporating the house into part of the restaurant It has been known as Paul’s Diner, Cucina Plata, Kelly’s Pub and the American Grill. The diner closed in 2008 and sat vacant for a couple years. That’s when Ron and Sue came into the picture. Ron and Sue bought the train car and house and painstakingly restored the inside building and car, as well as spruced up the outside that had deteriorated over time. Having had an antique business for over 25 years, Sue Saballus used her antique connections to find lighting fixtures and decorations to restore the train car to its original splendor when Teddy Roosevelt used it a century before. They even restored the original leaded glass windows along the top of the railcar. The family opened their restaurant in 2010 choosing the Bull Moose Bar and Grille name as a nod to the historical significance of the rail car. The Sandwich Weekly podcast, covering local activities and events for the period May 24th through June 6th. Here’s a little tidbit of Sandwich history thanks another podcast listener. Did you know that there once was a lake, Lake Davis, which stretched from Veterans Memorial Park to what is now Gletty Road. The lake covered approximately 100 acres, but was drained in 1912–1913 by installing tiles routing the water east to the Little Rock Creek. This was possible because Sandwich was built on a natural gradation due to a geological fault line known as the Sandwich Fault, so the city stands on a hillside. The southeast corner of the city is the lowest spot, roughly near the Harvey Creek Preserve, as well as near Little Rock Creek. It was drained because it was considered a “dead” lake. The lake didn’t have a sand beach, but was used for boating, fishing, swimming, hunting, and trapping. If you have some little-known history about Sandwich, send it to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. I’ll read it on a future podcast and give you full bragging rights. I have some good news, you may remember in episode one that I made a reference to chapters. Well, through lots of trial and error, I was able to get chapters implemented. If your podcast player supports chapters you can now jump directly to any day in the audio file by selecting that day in the chapters list. Two excellent podcast players that support chapters are Overcast for Apple devices, and Pocket Casts for both Apple and Android devices. Don’t forget that the show notes contain all the information in the podcast. Friday May 24 Little Movers - Story and play time for toddlers is at 10:30am at the Sandwich Public Library. The Sandwich Weekly podcast, covering local avtivities and events for the period May 17 through May 30. Here’s a little tidbit of Sandwich history thanks a podcast listener. You may, or may not, know that Sandwich was established around a planned railroad stop built on land given to the railroad by Almon Cage. Mr. Cage originally named the city Almon, but then decided to change the name to Newark Station. The railroad had only a flag stop at first, but when “Long John” Wentworth, a Congressman and future mayor of Chicago, got involved, then the railroad established a full stop in the town. At the time the name of the town was Newark Station and it became confused with it’s nearby southern neighbor, the town of Newark. Since Representative Wentworth had played a large role in convincing the railroad to have a full stop in the town, he was given the honor of naming the town. The Congressman selected the name Sandwich after the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in which he was raised. Interestingly, an ancestor of Wentworth, Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, established the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in 1763 naming it in honor of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, said to be the inventor of the sandwich. One of “Long John” Wentworth’s greatest, and often overlooked, accomplishments when he was a congressman, was to push for the border between Wisconsin and Illinois as it currently exists. There was a big push to have the Wisconsin border established at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, bringing the border to the southern edge of DeKalb county. This would have meant that Illinois would have no access to the lake, and Sandwich would lie in two states. If you have some little-known history about Sandwich, send it to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. I’ll read it on a future podcast and give you full bragging rights. The Sandwich Weekly podcast, episode 2, activities and events from May 12 to May 23 Hello, this is the Sandwich Weekly podcast. I’m your host Robert and I’ve prepared a list of activities and events happening in and around Sandwich over the next two weeks. just a reminder that everything I mention in this podcast, as well as contact information, can be found in the show notes. You can view the show notes on your podcast player or on the web at sandwichweekly.com. Good news, the Sandwich Weekly podcast has been approved by Spotify. If you subscribe to Spotify you can listen to the podcast using the Spotify app or web player. Before I get to the event calendar I thought it would be fun to pass along a little-known historical fact about the city of Sandwich. Did you know that Bob Hope once headlined a benefit show at the Sandwich airport? The show was sponsored by Friends of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Aurora to raise funds to purchase a small plane for Father Tony Gendusa who was a missionary in New Guinea. The event also included a two-hour air show starring Jerrie Mack, the first woman to fly around the world solo in a single-engine plane. The show was emceed by WGN’s Eddie Hubbard. There were between 5,000 and 10,000 people in attendance that day. That’s pretty impressive when you find out that the date of the event was July 20, 1969 - the same day that the Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon. In fact, Bob Hope delayed his departure from Sandwich to watch the moon landing in the airport's administration building. If you have some little known historical facts about Sandwich, send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com and I’ll read them on an upcoming show (of course I’ll give you credit!) It has been rather fun watching the action on the field with such great music on instead of listening to the commentary." John Helminski emailed: "Hi Marc, Thanks for your great podcast. We’re back Cannonballers in our largest indoor studio yet! Augie and Uncle Stu kick off the 2019 podcast season (v. 2.0) at Mistwood Golf Dome in Bolingbrook, IL….also referred to by Uncle Stu as Heaven on Earth. Intro The boys start off with a 9-hole putting match at Mistwood Dome, ending with Uncle Stu up one bloody mary. That won’t stop Augie though, as he proceeds to boldly predict a season that will be “A Little Crazy” using his Revolution Brewing beer selection. The boys go for the drink hat trick adding Miskatonic Brewing Co’s pale ale Shield Maiden to the mix. We get an update from Augie’s personal life (Surprise! It’s twin girls!) and Uncle Stu provides a horrendous serenade from The Lion King. Happings in the Golf World [6:21] The big tour has changed the playing schedules around, and surprisingly we both approve! The Mo’ Majors we come upon, the less problems we see. “Rules!” We discuss our opinions on various items: Leaving the pin in on the green - Augie hits us with the “coefficient of restitution”. Uncle Stu attempts to provide statistical reasoning, but he is not a Mad Scientist like Bryson DeChambeau. Loose Impediments - [14:25] Augie reminds himself “I’ve hit it in places you could spend five minutes clearing the area there’s so much junk”. Dropping at the knee - [15:40] Augie asks “why are you doing this courtesy little thing?!” We get our first 2019 Masters winner prediction (hint: it’s not Tiger Woods) Interview - Eric & Ben from Mistwood Golf Club, Dome, et al [18:30] Studio Location: Mistwood Golf Dome Uncle Stu introduces his hometown neighbor, Ben Hutchison. Ben is a casual golfer, and former TV broadcaster and anchor (shout out to Rockford, IL and Milwaukee, WI). He recently joined the Mistwood family, and is now the Marketing Specialist helping to promote the entire Mistwood portfolio. Augie introduces Eric Russell, a Kalamazoo MI native who has been in the Mistwood family since 2012. Eric is a Performance Specialist at both at Mistwood Golf Dome and Mistwood Golf Course. Eric is Trackman certified, a Science and Motion Certified Putting Instructor, a certified Club Fitter, and part of the Mistwood team tagged as one of “America’s 100 Best Clubfitters by Golf Digest (yes, they are official!) The boys give a visual podcast tour of Mistwood Golf Dome (Bolingbrook, IL), the first golf dome in America with an EXCLUSIVE Top Tracer technology contract. We highlight the plethora of amenities and technology available for use during the cold winter months in the Chicagoland area. Eric also helps clarify the difference between Trackman and TopTracer technologies (don’t worry, they have both!), and Ben discusses the “What’s In My Bag” phone app. We discuss the Mistwood Golf Club (Romeoville, IL) in detail. A prestigious public course that also has memberships available - including unprecedented year round access to the Dome. Eric walks us through the Performance Center (5,000 sq. ft.), the Clubhouse (20k+ sq. ft.), and Augie shares his regretful Trackman story - it was in his backyard the whole time! Ben shares the History of Mistwood Golf Course and tells us about the owner’s - Jim McWethy - vision and Scottish Heritage. He also speaks to the Architect - Ray Hearn - who designed, and re-designed the course, and modeled it in the Scottish and St. Andrews feel. The course offers 19 stacked sod-wall bunkers! Eric provides additional details on the multi-phased renovations, and Uncle Stu speaks to some elements of design planning. Eric tells us how Mistwood sets a Guinness Book of World Records (YUM)! They were featured on Golf Channel for the delicious feat. Ben touches on the non-golf related sides of Mistwood - on course human 5Ks, a dog 5K “Ruff Run” - who doesn’t like dogs?! They are embracing the family side of golf. Ben rounds out the Mistwood portfolio with Green St. Grille (Bensonville, IL) and Joliet Ballroom (Joliet, IL). We double back to speak more about McWethy’s Tavern (Romeoville, IL). “It’s filled with rich Mahogany”....ya, “I heard these guys hand beat the wood with machetes!” Cannonball Golf Happenings [1:11:30] Augie and Uncle Stu dive into more details of the TaylorMade demo day experience at Mistwood Golf Dome as both boys hit the new M5 / M6 drivers. Thank you to Donald Tanski of TaylorMade for stepping us through the fitting experience. “We talked about a lot about the Twist Face last year…..but this year, there is a resin injected Twist Face”. Augie believes it’s “steroids”, Uncle Stu believes its “whatever Tiger has injected in his backbone”. Engage Rocket Thrusters! The boys end in usual fashion with their song additions.
West Ham round out December and 2018 with an ugly loss away to Burnley, but despite that poor effort the Iron's are onto bigger and better things in 2019. Although different industries run the city now, and different groups of people live in this neighborhood; as I approach my destination – which is across the street from a concrete mixing facility and the Chicago Tribune newspaper printing warehouse – I am reminded that old Chicago is still here…at least for now.The first sign that I was in for a quality experience appeared in the middle of Chicago Avenue, in the crosswalk that led to my destination. There were two millennial-aged people serving as crossing guards, equipped with hand-held stop signs and pausing the traffic for the streams of people walking towards a building set back from the street.I was warmly greeted by two more young people as I walked through the front door. The best way to describe my immediate impression is that it felt like I walked into a really dope underground silent party, film screening, or art show. This is a young and diverse crowd. The tables in the middle of the lobby remind me of the first week of college, where the campus is full of organizations promoting their work.It is 9:30am on a cool November weekend morning, and there are 350-400 people packed into this intimate theater-like venue, and they are mostly younger. College students, 20 and 30-somethings…and they are very much present, engaged, and enthusiastic. This was an inclusive atmosphere with the cool aesthetic of an exclusive setting. As the event began, the 12-person band on the stage began to perform a song with the chorus, “You Got Me.” As they sang, stage lights beamed concert like rays of light across the audience, and seven high-definition projection screens displayed the song lyrics overlaid on video clips of nature scenes and abstract light animations.I looked around and thought about the capital and resources that must have gone into this space. It was so clearly and intentionally created for the audience assembled here. Faith communities are often portrayed in popular media as people operating in physical spaces created by earlier generations. Yet this space was clearly designed by and for this current generation. The journey continues in River West, at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Green.Intro Theme Music: Victory Lap by QSTN ft. Robert Carson, "Bob", is a well respected lawyer in our community. He's also a hunting and fishing enthusiast. In our interview, he shares a few stories of being a kid in Havre de Grace including 17 cent movies and summers spent on and in the water in Charlestown, MD. He remembers some of the effects of WWII on a young student, the joy of fishing, and memories of downtown, including 17 cent movies! Bob well remembers segregation and the Brown vs Topeka Board of Education Supreme Court decision in 1954. He also shares his thoughts on the need for citizens to be involved in their communities. Since I've known Bob mostly as a professional, it was delightful to enjoy a laugh or two during the interview while enjoying his stories of years gone by and learning of some of his interests 'outside the law.' Camay Calloway Brooks Murphy is a beautiful lady inside and out. In her full length interview she shares part of her life story from her auspicious beginnings as the love-child of famed jazzman Cab Calloway and Zelma Proctor, to an esteemed educator, and an avid citizen of the communities lucky enough to have her living within their boundaries. In this podcast excerpt, I will share snippets of her life, rich with experiences from the days of the Harlem Renaissance in NYC to her early years in Baltimore. She shares stories of living in Baltimore under the guidance of her grandmother, spending wonderful times being pampered by the lady customers at Poindexter's Beauty Salon. She shares the attitudes of her mother's and father's families towards their relationship. We hear a funny story about the 'alien' praying mantis! And she shares her love and not-so-loving relationship with technology. She gives us a few simple words to live by in closing, while easily admitting that it's difficult to tell anyone how to live their life. In Havre de Grace, those who have met her enjoy the easy laugh, twinkling eyes, and always enthusiastic energy of this amazing 90 year old woman. She may have slowed a tiny bit, but you would never notice as she enjoys jazz, talks about her play created for Havre de Grace of the fictional tale of a black jockey during our race track days, or shares her desire to see a statue built to celebrate the life of a local legend, Ernest Burke - speaker, humanitarian, and superb athlete of the Negro League. She is a remarkable addition to our community. (c)2017 Thriving Owl Publ., Ellie Mencer, 343 Green St, Havre de Grace, MD ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
Born in Salisbury, MD in 1934, Phil Barker never expected to go to college. Although poor, his childhood was rich in experiences. He and his friends were creative and ambitious. He shares the story of learning to drive - literally - while taking his driver's test! Do you know what 'doffing' is... keep listening. Entering the Army toward the end of the Korean War, he discovered that he had the ability to learn a language - and chose Russian. He worked for the Army Security Agency*. *Human resources (1945–65) The ASA, during the majority of the years of its existence, was largely a "Cold War" operation. ASA enlisted troops were usually recruited from those scoring in the top 2% of scores in aptitude tests given during initial induction. американский шпион Hear the story ... A bit of history on the ASA and it's role in Korean War He returned to DuPont in Seaford, Delaware and realized he wanted more than factory work. Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, he entered college at Salisbury. Oh... there's much more. Played baseball, married and had two children, and enjoyed a 31 year career with J.M. Huber Corp. in Havre de Grace. When his children were in their late teens, he married "Charlie" (May) whom he lost to cancer after a long fight. Phil Barker has been active in many community organizations since moving here in 1961 as well as having spent a total of 8 years on city council, was Mayor, and also sat on the Harford County Council. Susan Page Carroll Asher was born in Baltimore, moved to Bel Air in high school. But once she married her late husband, Art Asher, they settled in their home in Havre de Grace, raised two children, and became an active part of our community. In this excerpt from her full-length audio, Sue talks about joining VISTA, the domestic Peace Corps. She mentions interesting items like her dad being the first to ‘ride in the nose cone of a missile’, a bit of history regarding the warehouse (beer distribution) on St. John St. and their building on the corner of N. Washington and Congress (where Asher’s Paint Store was),plus an interesting insight about the relationship between Art and the Dutch Boy (paints). And did you know that she and Art once owned a skipjack, the FIESTA! Listen to the podcast and follow along with the transcript if you like. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED (c)2016 Thriving Owl Publ. Although Kathryn Louise Schott Hill was not born and raised in Havre de Grace, her childhood stories of growing up in Cornwall, PA are quite fun to listen to. She shares a tough farm life of survival, remembers the depression era and bums/hobos that followed the railroad, chuckles over childhood games, and even shares a story of sibling rivarly!!! In the full length interview, she shares how her parents chose Bob Jones University for her, teaching at Norwich, NY and Havre de Grace and Aberdeen, MD. Really fun is how she met Cecil and the fact that she has moved 10 - yes 10 - times all within Havre de Grace! Check out our website and subscribe. Enjoy the podcast!
