The Minnesota Vikings suffer another one-score loss to a team that they could have beat. The San Francisco 49ers proved to be too much controlling the ball and time on the clock, especially after a Kirk Cousins quasi-meltdown in the second half. Can the Detroit Lions replicate the same results? Jared Goff is playing a little better, but he has some no-names to throw to. The Kitties do have a decent run game though, and that could target a Vikes' weakness. With a depleted D-line, the part of the game that has suffered the most is defending the run game. The Vikings have some players that are in a questionable status as to whether they would play, like Patrick Peterson, Michael Pierce, and Dalvin Tomlinson. That doesn't include those we know are out like Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen. On the offensive side, Dalvin Cook will be out so most of the load will go to Alexander Mattison. He will be sharing time with Kene Nwangwu. That will be exciting to see.  The unspoken concern comes down to Kirk Cousins. He turtled in the second half of last week's game and reverted back to Captain Checkdown. Will he continue poor play or become aggressive again? On the good side of things, Cousins is from Michigan and tends to destroy the Lions when he plays there. Will he Sunday? …And you wonder why we enjoy our beverages so much? Another round bartender! In this fascinating deep dive with bartender and ice cream fanatic Iain McPherson, some of the topics we discuss include: How a childhood love of frozen treats, a fascination with lucid dreaming, and a stint at Italy's most hallowed gelato university led Iain to explore the largely untapped universe of freeze concentration. Why this process - first pioneered by German “Eisbock” makers - has affectionately and efficiently come to be known as “switching.” Then, we break down the process, including how to use switching to modify both ferments and distillates, what tools you'll need, and some of the experiments that have yielded the most interesting results at Iain's bars. We also cover why switching produces more pure flavors than heat- and pressure-intensive techniques that employ traditional stills or rotovaps, a few important precautions to keep you and your guests safe when making and enjoying switch-finished products, what the future holds for freeze-thaw mixology, and much, much more. There are more than half a million bartenders working in the United States, although it's a pretty safe bet that those numbers have changed in COVID's wake. Still, that's a heck of a lot of people mixing cocktails, pouring beers, and popping bottles for guests, all while also acting as therapists, entertainers, and occasionally bouncers for the mere privilege of serving us. But where do we form our collective expectations about the role of bartenders? In her latest piece for Good Beer Hunting, freelance writer Gloria Rakowsky describes her early introduction to the sometimes-illustrious position from places like The Love Boat and Cheers. Her piece, titled “Do It With Flair — The Changing Role of the Bartender in Pop Culture,” unpacks how society views the people between us and the drinks we love through a cultural analysis of movies, television, and other influences that have redefined the role over the years. As a writer who also serves beer at a local brewery in her hometown of Syracuse, New York, Rakowsky's perspective as both observer and participant gives her a unique insight into what it means to serve. During this podcast conversation, she discusses a range of topics from how to differentiate empowerment from exploitation, the disconnect between who we're shown as icons of hospitality versus who's actually behind the bar, and how society has influenced our perception of bartending as either a glamorous end goal or temporary stepping stone.

For this episode, we decided to open up about what is going on with what Amelia and I have been going through in regards to our marriage and her battle with addiction. On a lighter note, we also talk about getting hired at one of the industry's top bars. Organizations are increasingly adopting a Zero Trust model, which is based on the philosophy that there should be no implicit trust in a corporate network. Rooted in the principle of “Never Trust, Always Verify”, Zero Trust is designed to protect modern digital environments against successful data breaches. While it has existed for over a decade, Zero Trust is one of the most misused “buzzwords” in the industry today. Vendor marketing and other misleading data has unfortunately caused mass confusion about what Zero Trust really is and how to use it properly.Former Forrester Research analyst and creator of Zero Trust, John Kindervag, stops in to demystify the term, while explaining how it's a proven security strategy within enterprise security. Our conversation at the bar includes properly defining the term, the value of adoption, implementation techniques, exemptions, and more!Tony the Bartender develops a “Python”.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/barcodepodcast)

Got drunk and then got lost in Dublin... At night. We only got to see the southern towns all the way around the Southern portion. Beautiful places all over. We met a gal Bartender from Boston who went over there and hasn't left. I have your CD that has the resterant on it. Irish Dring Songs? Brodignagian Bards I think. I just love it. My daughter loves it too. She had seen a gentleman who told the story of "an Irish Christmas". You make it. I think your family might too. it's wonderful. Slainte," Ken Katen sent you a message on Patreon: "Hi, Marc - Listening to your Love of Planet Earth (#491- I'm catching up on my music podcasts), I thought it was well past time that I thank you for so many years of WONDERFUL Irish & Celtic music. I've been listening to your podcast since very nearly the beginning, sometimes more religiously than others. Sure, it's been grand to hear - and now to get to see a bit of - you, how you and your family have grown and, even tho we've never met face to face, I feel like I know you, just a bit. I remember when you moved (from Texas?) to New Orleans, when you met your LadyLove, and when your wee daughter needed such a grievous surgery (I believe I lit a candle). I hope you all are doing fine, and I'm glad I can help you here at Patreon. I wish I could do more, but I'm supporting a few artists here and [buying] music when I can. One of my favoritest memories, from many years ago now, is of bombing along the dirt ‘backcountry' roads of Joshua Tree National Park, in my then-new 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD, windows up to keep the dust out, a/c on and your podcast playing LOUD. That show was one when you played a pub-ish song (I think one of yours) that was a paen to Joss Whedon, over whom you also rhapsodized before & after the song. I'd tried “Firefly,” it hadn't resonated, but you convinced me to give it another try. By the second episode I was intrigued, by the third I'd fallen hopelessly in love, both with Serenity and her crew (WHAT? only 14 episodes??!!) and with all things Whedon. I had my own grievous surgery/recovery awhile after that, and I loaded up my Netlix CD queue with Angel, based on its description of a troubled vampire trying to navigate his way through the modern world, and when I realized it was a Buffy spinoff, I went back and started watching Buffy until Angel spun off, then watched them in airing order (compulsive engineer here) until they both wrapped up. And since then, Dollhouse, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (well, a lot of it, anyway) - he's so darn [prolific]. I'm not sure whether to say “Thank you” or “Curse ye.” ;) And along the way, I've learned so much about Celtic history and culture from listening to your show - Italian Celts - who knew?? Your taste and selections have grown more and more discerning, and the old favorites come around again too, and I'm always a sucker for a beautiful ballad or a stirring dance instrumental. And your commitment to showcasing diversity in the Celtic music world is outstanding - not only your women only shows, but now your commitment putting together a Pride show of LGBT+ artists. As a gay man myself, who went to the first ever Northern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire - in my defense, I WAS still in high school - and spent some time in my 20's hanging out with the SCA, I know we fae folk have always been a big, but more-or-less closeted part of the re-creationist/Celtic music and cultural world, which [can] present as overtly misogynistic and heterocentric. Just like in real life, sometimes, I guess. But closets are for kilts. And your hand made chain mail, if you've got it. So a big rainbow THANK YOU! .?? for all you're doing to bring out its beautiful diversity. All this has been a longwinded way (I'm Sicilian and Greek, so...) of saying “Thank you” for all the pleasure you've given me. Now that I'm retired, and locked down here in San Francisco, I plan to mark my calendar for the next Celtfather show. Once we're past this dratted Crown Virus thingy, p'raps I'll be able to join you on a Celtic Invasion Vacation, if you're still doing them. Bliadhna Mhath Ùr”
