Ireland's largest distillery is celebrating 200 years since the original Midleton Distillery opened in 1825, along with the 50th anniversary of the “new” Midleton, which replaced the original distillery in 1975. Master Distiller Kevin O'Gorman joins us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth with details on two new whiskies commemorating the anniversaries. In the news, Old Elk is getting new ownership and a new home in Ohio, while the Dublin Liberties Distillery is shutting down because of the headwinds facing the Irish Whiskey industry.

Join us as we get “Lost Outside of Belfast” when we take a 25-minute cab ride from the city center to Hinch Distillery in bucolic County Down. With Head Distiller Will Stafford as our guide, we explore the sensory journey of whiskey making from the meticulous process of mashing, fermentation, and distillation to savoring the heady aromas of the “angels' share” seeping from the aged wooden barrels shacked ceiling-high in the cavernous Hinch whiskey warehouse.Next, Claire McLernon guides us through a tasting of Hinch's range of whiskeys and its Ninth Wave gin, highlighting the different flavor profiles achieved through the distiller's alchemy and artistry.Founder Dr. Terry Cross then joins in to share what it takes to succeed in the increasingly competitive whiskey business and talks up the business opportunities he finds at the Belfast International Homecoming, a yearly marquee business event that your co-hosts attended the previous evening, which we'll explore in a future Irish Stew episode.Pull up a stool and join us for a happy hour at Hinch.Hinch LinksWebsiteFacebookInstagramLinkedInHinchDr. Terry CrossWill StaffordX Episode Details: Season 7, Episode 12; Total Episode Count: 115
Are You In The Muff Market? Are You A Muff Liquor Man? Ok folks, we're going to have fun on this one. When I started the research for this episode, I wasn't sure whether the "Muff Liquor Company" name was a tongue-in-somewhere thing or a hard lean-in. Turns out it's the latter with a healthy dose of the former. It is a company based in Muff, Ireland that makes liquor, and yes they know what the name means. If you doubt it, check out their April Fool's Day post from this year...just delightfully dirty. Once you're past the name, though, you've got to have a good product for me to care, and boy do they. I'm joined by Laura Bonner, founder of Muff Liquor Company and probably the closest connection I'll ever have to Jimmy Carr and Ed Sheeran. She's made Muff Liquors of these men, joining Russell Crowe and other notable celebs as spokespeople and investors. The journey was long and hard, and nothing came easy (ok, last puns, I promise). COVID nearly put them under before they could begin. Now, they're thriving, and the US market awaits. Muff Liquor's Irish Whiskey is a delicious pour, smoked apples and gentle, sweet peat, at a ridiculously affordable price point (all of their products are $34.99 MSRP, give or take). Take a shot - see if you enjoy diving into the Muff as much as I did (ok, THAT's the last one). Thank you to Laura for entering to the Whiskey Ring! Send us a textMartin and Pat transformed a friendship at Burns Pub in Columbus into Bua, an exceptional Irish whiskey brand that competes with giants while maintaining local Ohio roots. Their Black Label expression, finished in Irish stout barrels at 94 proof, offers a unique sipping experience that showcases how Irish whiskey creates perfect harmony with barrel finishes compared to bourbon's typically more dominant base spirit.• Bua Irish Whiskey started when Pat (bar owner) and Martin (Tullamore Dew rep) dreamed of creating their own brand• The White Label expression (123 proof) is an OHLQ single barrel, while the new Black Label (94 proof) joins their core lineup• Irish whiskey accepts barrel finishing differently than bourbon, creating a true 50-50 flavor partnership• The Black Label features notes of vanilla, confectioner's sugar, and unique citrus characteristics• Roughly 90% of Irish whiskey is controlled by just four brands, making craft producers like Bua a rare find• Try making a Guinness reduction syrup with brown sugar for an exceptional Bua old-fashioned• Guinness surprisingly contains only 3.8% ABV, less than Bud Light's 4.2%Join us at Burns Pub to experience the full range of Bua whiskeys and discover why these small-batch Irish spirits deserve your attention.Behind every great whiskey lies a story of friendship, passion, and craftsmanship. For Bua Irish Whiskey, that story begins at Burns Pub in Columbus, Ohio, where bar owner Pat and former Tullamore Dew representative Martin transformed their "what if" conversations into a thriving local whiskey brand that captures the essence of Irish spirit-making while standing firmly on Ohio soil. The Scotchy Bourbon Boys dive deep into Bua's expressions, particularly celebrating their stout-finished offerings. What sets these apart is how masterfully Irish whiskey accepts barrel finishing – creating a true 50-50 partnership between the base spirit and the finishing barrel, rather than the subtle complementary notes often found in finished bourbons. This harmony of flavors allows both elements to shine equally, creating a unique drinking experience. Most striking is Bua's ability to compete with industry giants despite their small-batch nature. With approximately 90% of Irish whiskey sales controlled by just four major brands, craft producers like Bua represent a small but mighty force in the market, offering innovative expressions that challenge convention. Their White Label OHLQ single barrel (an impressive 123 proof) and the new Black Label core expression (94 proof) deliver complexity and character rarely found in standard Irish offerings, earning a remarkable 15/18 score in the hosts' "Barrel Bottle Breakdown" assessment.Whether you're a bourbon enthusiast looking to expand your palate or an Irish whiskey aficionado seeking something beyond the mainstream, Bua delivers with notes of vanilla, confectioner's sugar, and unique citrus characteristics that dance across the palate. The hosts even suggest trying a Guinness reduction syrup with brown sugar and chocolate bitters for an exceptional Bua old-fashioned – perfect for celebrating St. Patrick's Day or any day worthy of a remarkable pour. Flushed with their firestuffostered friendship, WAKE celebrates St. Patrick's Day by exploring all of the many ways that Finnegans Wake refers to whiskey: Ireland's beloved, potent créatúr. Joined by world whiskey historian and former Sweny's volunteer Fionnán O'Connor, we explode some myths regarding monks, St Patrick, and potatoes, brush off our pub stool wisdom, prepare the worm on our darling little stills, and consider the role trust plays in what is simultaneously the oldest and youngest whiskey industry in the world. So, tuck yourself into a snug in your local shebeen with a ball of malt, and don't forget to get in on a round: we bet you can't stay for just one. Inside you there are two wolves…and both of them are drunk. That would be due to the Writers' Tears Copper Pot Irish Whiskey which we've paired with this week's topic of conversation—The Witcher: The Ballad of Two Wolves, the Brothers Grimm-inspired graphic novel that features a young woman named Red, three sisters named Hogge and one big, bad, booze-fueled wolf. (And no, we're not actually talking about Geralt here, though he's in the story as well.) As ballads go, this proves to be a lively one, as we debate the blast radius of evil curses, delight in Dandelion's delirious behavior and reveal why gathering a bunch of people who hate each other in a locked room while you accuse them of crimes is usually a dumb idea. Oh, and Geralt hooks up with a sorceress. Because of course he does. Hold music: "Local Forecast - Slower" by Kevin MacLeod

If you're looking for something different in the Irish whiskey category, make sure to check out Jameson Triple Triple. It's triple distilled like all Midleton whiskey, but then finished in three different casks, bourbon, sherry, and chestnut casks. The usual Jameson fruit, sweetness and drinkability takes on a mellow, nutty complexity with the addition of the chestnut casks, there's even a bit of toffee pudding, Chistmas cake spice on the finish that really adds to the depth. This would be an easy innovation or line extension to overlook or ignore because it's not at a luxury price point, but you shouldn't because it's really tasty.

Lets get our Irish on.
This week's episode of The Whiskey Trip takes listeners on a flavorful journey to Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a visit to O'Shaughnessy Distilling Co. Big Chief chats with distiller Kate Douglas about the brand's Keeper's Heart Whiskey. The family motto, "Fugit Hora" or "The Hour Flies," is a reminder to treasure every moment with loved ones, making their whiskey a fitting choice for any occasion, from celebrations to casual gatherings. The episode begins with a blend of Irish Whiskey and Bourbon, clocking in at 86 proof. This whiskey is described as having rich caramel notes, reminiscent of a freshly baked pecan pie, offering a unique and memorable experience. Next, they sample the 10-year Irish single malt finished in Malaga casks, which wows the host with its biscuity cereal flavors, alongside hints of apricots, honey, and almonds. It's so impressive that it's a contender for "whiskey of the year." As they move on, the team tries the Irish+Bourbon blend at 92 proof. The added strength brings nutmeg spice, heavy cream, and chocolate notes, enhancing the complexity of the drink. In the second half, they up the ante with the Irish+Bourbon Cask Strength at a potent 118 proof. This whiskey delivers a powerful combination of sweet caramel, vanilla, and charred oak aromas from the bourbon, mixed with earthy pot still notes and orchard fruits. To finish, they savor the Irish + American Surely Darkness single barrel, finished in barrels from Surly Brewery. At 110 proof, this whiskey offers a delightful sensory experience, sure to please even the most discerning whiskey drinkers. This episode highlights the craftsmanship of a northern distillery, combining various distilling techniques to produce remarkable whiskeys. Cheers to a memorable stop on The Whiskey Trip!
