In this episode of the show we are beginning, albeit a little bit prematurely, our June excursion into the cinema of Robert Altman who would be celebrating his 100th birthday if he was still with us. And we are starting off with his anti-western McCabe and Mrs Miller. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how Altman fits into the landscape of New Hollywood, how he set out to deconstruct the form and bury the star under his aesthetic and perhaps the reasons why he did so. We also talk about the chemistry (or, ironically, lack thereof) between Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, the idea of watching a movie through a t-shirt and hiding a cultural commentary in a sparse and meandering deconstructed western. Finally, we lose our wits trying to figure out how to pronounce Warren Beatty's last name and we also, if you stay tuned long enough, end up sharing our Jack Nicholson impressions... despite the fact he was not in the movie at all. Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsFeaturing: Hillary White & Jak-Luke SharpIntro: Infraction - CassetteOutro: Infraction - DaydreamHead over to uncutgemspodcast.com to find all of our archival episodes and more!Follow us on Twitter (@UncutGemsPod), IG (@UncutGemsPod) and Facebook (@UncutGemsPod)Buy us a coffee over at Ko-Fi.com (ko-fi.com/uncutgemspod)Subscribe to our Patreon!

Dana and Tom welcome back guest, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IG) to discuss Shampoo (1975) for its 50th Anniversary: directed by Hal Ashby, written by Warren Beatty and Robert Towne, music by Paul Simon, starring Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn, Julie Christine, Lee Grant, Carrie Fischer, and Jack Warden.Plot Summary: Shampoo is a sharp, bittersweet satire wrapped in the glitzy excess of late-'60s Beverly Hills. The film follows George Roundy (Beatty), a womanizing hairdresser whose ambition is undercut by his inability to resist the charms of his wealthy clientele. On the eve of the 1968 presidential election, George juggles a tangled web of lovers—including his current girlfriend (Goldie Hawn), his wealthy benefactor's wife (Lee Grant), and his ex (Julie Christie)—all while trying to secure financial backing for his own salon.Shampoo disguises its sharp political and social critique beneath a surface of sexual farce, letting the characters' selfishness mirror the broader moral drift of the era. The film's humor is sly but never mean-spirited, and its direction, full of casual elegance, ensures that even the most ridiculous moments feel authentic. By the film's melancholic finale, Shampoo has revealed itself as more than just a sex comedy—it's a lament for lost opportunities, both personal and political.Guest:Sara SheaHost and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IGPreviously on 12 Angry Men (1957) Revisit, Barry Lyndon (1975)Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Our Guest02:04 Cast and Background for Shampoo03:32 Relationship(s) with Shampoo06:22 What is Shampoo About?16:15 Warren Beatty's Eclectic Film Choices22:05 Plot Summary for Shampoo23:32 Did You Know?24:44 First Break26:54 What's Happening with Sara29:05 A Listener Question30:42 Best Performance(s)39:01 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)44:09 Second Break45:12 In Memoriam46:28 Best/Funniest Lines49:36 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy52:46 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance56:36 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:02:28 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:07:21 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:14:03 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:16:06 Remaining Questions for Shampoo01:22:53 Thank You to Our Guest01:24:30 Final Thoughts for the Week01:28:00 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or

In our last episode we took a look at films that followed Alfred HItchcock's filmmaking style. This time around we're looking at films that have deep echoes of the work of Ingmar Bergman. We start with Away From Her (2006), written and directed by Sarah Polley. Julie Christie plays a woman whose Alzheimer's is starting to advance, and her husband (Gordon Pinsent) has to deal with the guilt, the loneliness and all the other unexpected complications that come with placing her in a facility. It's probably one of the best films about Alzheimer's you'll see, and it's simultaneously sad and uplifting. In Part 2, we'll talk about a movie that's a little more on the nose, with Bergman Island. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

Elegant. That was the adjective used by Team Vintage Sand's own Michael Edmund to describe why the films of Joseph Losey are so important to him, and why he has been such a huge fan of Losey's for nearly all of his film-going life. Losey's was a name that seemed to keep popping up in a wide variety of contexts over the course of the podcast, so, after many delays, we are proud to present Episode 54—Director's Cut: Joseph Losey. Losey's is a unique career in the sense that it really was two distinct careers. After growing up in a life of privilege in Wisconsin (where he was a high school classmate of another pretty good director, Nicholas Ray) and an education at Harvard and Dartmouth, Losey made his way to Hollywood and directed a couple of interesting, low-budget films. Among these were the stilted but prescient "The Boy with Green Hair" (1948), and the rather senseless remake of Lang's "M" (1951), the latter replete with awful soundtrack music and LA sunshine. One possible reason that Losey might have gotten involved with this misguided effort might have been to give actors (Luther Adler, Martin Gabel) and other creatives (screenwriter Waldo Salt), who had been or were about to be blacklisted, a shot at getting some work. Losey himself, an unapologetic member of the Communist Party and an important creative associate of Bertolt Brecht, knew that when Brecht was called before HUAC, it was only a matter of time before he would meet the same fate. So before he could be summoned, he fled to London, and never again worked in the United States for the remaining three decades of his life. He began his English period with some low budget films, some of which, like 1954's "The Sleeping Tiger", still hold some interest. It was during this period, however, that he met two men who were going to help him create the reputation that he still carries to this day, that of a director of great style whose films, not surprisingly given his own life experience, were always political without ever dealing directly with politics: the actor Dirk Bogarde, and the legendary playwright Harold Pinter. Their first work together, 1963's "The Servant", is generally regarded as Losey's masterpiece. It is an absolute evisceration of a rotting class system that has yet to realize its time has passed and that the empire on which it was founded has disintegrated. The complex, ever-changing relationship between upper class twit Tony (the wonderful James Fox) and Barrett, the manservant Tony hires (Bogarde), is cold, chilling and surprising right to the very end. Losey continued his obsession with social class in the World War I drama "King and Country" (1964), a film with a setup similar to "Paths of Glory" that in some ways is an even more powerful anti-war statement than Kubrick's film. Losey teamed up again, somewhat less successfully, with Pinter and Bogarde for 1967's "Accident", and with Pinter for one more masterpiece, 1971's "The Go-Between", a gorgeous period piece featuring pitch-perfect performances by Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton, newcomer Dominic Guard as the titular young man, and especially by the never-more-luminous Julie Christie. There are no easy answers when it comes to Losey, but two things come to mind. As John notes in the episode, had Losey not fled persecution and stayed in America, he probably would have been nothing more than a more-talented-than-average studio hack. Exile turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him, and it may be a direct result of his outsider status that Losey was able to cast an even sharper eye on the follies and perils of the dying English class system more effectively even than the great native British directors of the 1960's. Whatever your thoughts on his work, in the end, it is that aforementioned elegance and intelligence that make Losey's best films worth watching today.

We admire the slapstick, break down the wildest version of Old Macdonald we've ever heard, and love one of the wildest turns in an Elvis movie so far. Elvis jumps through a window! We look ahead to Clambake.

Daphne du Maurier was a prolific English writer of novels, plays, and short stories resonant with what she termed "a sense of unreality." In this episode, JF and Phil discuss her great short story "Don't Look Now," which Nicholas Roeg famously adapted to the screen in 1973 in a film starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Recorded live at Shannon Taggart's Lily Dale Symposium on July 25th, 2024, the discussion takes a number of turns, exploring the ghost as an "image of itself," the phenomenon of "deathishness," the experience of derealization, the human capacity to break time, and grief as a rift in time. We kick off a new mini-series this week celebrating the work of the late Donald Sutherland, who passed away last month. We start by one of the most highly regarded horror films in his whole catalog: the dread-soaked, melancholy tale of grief and premonition called DON'T LOOK NOW.Set in Venice amidst the tragedy of a deceased child, married couple John and Laura (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) are trying to move on with their lives when two older women approach them with the news that their daughter is in a happier place now, but is trying to warn them. The encounter sparks a chain of events that touches on matters of memory, intimacy, faith, and ultimately horror as they seek to make sense of what to do next. Also featuring our preliminary thoughts on Ti West's recent thriller MaXXXine, exclusively for our Patrons, this is a thoughtful, contemplative, and often disarmingly funny conversation that we really hope you enjoy.Patron Only Segment: Ti West's MaXXXine4:00 - DON'T LOOK NOWSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week (and next) we'll be looking at films that use genre as an overlay for their larger message. And we begin with two films that use the Western genre to convey their messages. We start with McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971), directed by Robert Altman and starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, along with several others from the Altman stable of actors. We often see this film listed as an "anti-Western" because it inverts so many tropes in the genre, and we can't really argue with that. In Part 2, we'll look at a perhaps lesser-known film, The Claim, from 2000. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

In Today's Episode of the podcast I chat with Julie Christie about creating engaging content, especially for family photographers. We discuss the impact of connection content, building trust with the audience, and the value of authority content. You'll learn how to develop a photography brand with a personality, appeal to introverts in business, and strategically navigate the balance between connection and sales content in your marketing efforts. The Big Ideas:Connection Content: Share glimpses of your values and personality without revealing private details to build trust and likability with your audience.Brand Personality: Create a photography brand that reflects your values and personality, emphasizing connection with the audience over price or quality.Introverts in Business: Market with integrity, emphasize empathy, and cater to like-minded introverts in your marketing to build trust and loyalty.Authority Content: Utilize website for authority content to address buyer's questions and concerns, efficiently converting them into customers.Implementation Plan:1: Create Connection Content: Julie emphasizes the power of showing your personality and values through connection content to engage your audience, especially for family photographers. This approach helps clients feel like they know you, which can be a strong factor in their decision to book your services. Photographers can harness this insight by showcasing behind-the-scenes snippets of their work life, sharing personal but not private anecdotes, or even their philosophy on capturing precious family moments.Exercise: Share a brief story or insight on your social media that relates to why you love capturing family moments. It could be a throwback to your childhood family photos, a recent warm interaction with a client, or why you cherish the candid in-between moments. This helps potential clients see the person behind the lens and fosters a sense of familiarity and trust.2: Showcase Authority: As per Julie's experience, authority content might not rake in high engagement but is crucial for conversion. It establishes you as a knowledgeable expert, which can be especially persuasive when potential clients are considering who to trust with their memories.Exercise: Write a blog post or create an infographic for your website that answers a common photography-related question you've encountered, such as "How to prepare your kids for a photo session" or "The best time of day for outdoor family photos." Include helpful tips that showcase your expertise and experience.3: Embrace the Learning Curve:  There are so many advantages to the mistakes you make in the journey of growth as a photographer. For new photographers, this lesson is vital: being unafraid to make and learn from mistakes is what ultimately refines your craft.Exercise: Select a past photo that you're not particularly proud of and analyze it to understand what didn't work. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Amirreza Tayebi, Author, “A Very British Revolution”, about the British Invasion About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Amirreza Tayebi, has written a compelling and insightful book entitled, “A Very British Revolution” about an often misunderstood and sometimes unappreciated decade in the life of every baby boomer: the 60s – better known as the Swinging Sixties, which put London, England at the center of a cultural phenomenon.   The book discusses the genesis, development and global impact of the fashions, social attitudes, movies and music that became known as “the British Invasion”, which defined and exemplified 60's pop culture.  He writes about iconic music artists like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Animals and the Kinks.   He discusses the influence of groundbreaking movies like “The Servant”, “A Hard Day's Night”, “Alifie”, “Blow-Up” and “Georgy Girl”.  And he talks about trendsetting celebrities like Julie Christie, Dirk Bogarde, Michael Caine, Lulu, Twiggy, Marianne Faithful and Mick Jagger.  And of course, we can't forget those colourful psychedelic fashions coming out of Carnaby Street.    Our guest is a contemporary historian who studied politics and international relations, and is currently working in the broadcasting industry.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Amirreza Tayebi, go to:https://www.amazon.ca/Very-British-Revolution-Amirreza-Tayebi/dp/1803814934 #AmirrezaTayebi   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

8 more movie reviews for you today, and lets dive right in. Wait! Hold up for just a second, cause today we also do a lil mini celebration of having reviewed over 225 films here. Just about halfway for film reviews according to my ever expanding list. So we share some of our favorites and not so favs from the list. Ok back to it. We start off today with (Cold Turkey 1971). Here we have Dick van Dyke Pippa Scott and pretty much every big character actor workin in the 70's. This was directed by Norman Lear, who actually did not direct much, he was more of a writer and producer, and can y'all believe he is still with us at 101. He showed up the oscars and I was pretty amazed. Damn let's go, this is a movie about a town that wants to make a name for itself by taking an odd bet from big Tobacco that a town can't quit smoking for a month. Will the succeed/ is this film any good, well we will certainly give our hot takes on this 52 year old movie. Here I screwed up the chronological flow of things and engaged in our Pink Panther movie early, apologies, but it's (the Pink Panther strikes again 1976) More apologies to slapstick fans, for my treatment of the so called genre, just imagine me falling down a lot and having a rake hit me in the face……. While I solve crime, that could make you happy again. Moving on to (the Snow Goose 1971) spoiler with little remorse, it's the most trippy 70's way to tell the story of Dunkirk ever. Listen to our review of the snow goose then listen to Camel's amazing progressive rock masterpiece, the snow goose, for some musical insight into this. Why not? Next up is (the Other 1972) Ha, we couldn't quite figure it out while reviewing this drama horror mystery film, but right here on IMDB it says it takes place in 1935, and that's very important to know, NOT. It can bug us when we just can't tell while viewing, when a movie is supposed to take place, I thought that Touched by Love just had everyone dressing basic and a lil hipster, but it took place in the 50's apparently. What else to say………… I think this kid might be trouble. Let's continue with another creepy one we wanted to get on the tape before halloween but as usual didn't. Please enjoy now our review of (Don't look now 1973) Ha, no review here, you gotta listen, but why would you be here and not. This one is weird and I think it's meant to be. Fans of Julie Christie, Donald Sutherland, and director Nicolas Roeg, must sometimes find their way here, whether they love it or not. Moving on again to (Conduct Unbecoming 1975). The guy from sound of music who was apparently at least half drunk the whole shoot is here in this, he was also in Star Trek 6, also the guy from Jurrassic park that says “welcome to Jurrasic park.' Is here too sooooo it's got to be great of course. F**k don't forget the guy from Logan's Run, the guy from Cheech and Chongs Up in Smoke, and the Officer who says “my vow of celibacy is on record.” In Star Trek the motion picture, she's here, as well as Susan York from superman 2. Everyone's here so this is just gonna rule, right? Next up is Henry Wrinker in (the One and Only 1978). Will the Fonz who is the absolute most annoying self obsessed college student, find balance, and have a healthy home and work relationship? Let's see, Henry is a great actor so even in cringe it's nice, at least for me to watch him cook. Kim Darby from the STOS episode MIRI and True grit is here, along with Mrs Deagle from Gremlins who gets sent through the roof in the stair chair device. Finally today we review (GoldenGirl 1979). This, long long on my list of buried 70's films with a very intriguing premise has finally been re-released on DVD. Will it live up to the hype in my head? Susan Anton is here, singing the theme song, and training constantly. Hey, 70's film fans, I hope this finds you well, and seriously, thanks for reading this, and listening.
