Mark Devlin is the CEO of Leyton Orient, a team that's been riding the rollercoaster of English football right on the edge in recent years. From nearly going out of business and dropping into non-league football to bouncing back into League One playoff finals, the fans have been on a ride the few would choose. However, new ownership and big plans to build both on and off the pitch make this London club a hugely exciting football proposition for the next decades. What has this journey looked like from the inside and how is success being built into the fabric of the future? Having been so close to joining the list that no one wants to be near, alongside Bury, now Morecombe and even Sheffield Wednesday, Orient's struggles are another glaring reminder of the house of cards an owner financing model presents to the Football League. Mark is an experienced CEO, leading Brentford through the early years of their ride to Premier League consistency. His take on what is required to build a club for the community and fan while keeping the finance team happy is what sets the O's apart, and promises big things for a fanbase juggling the mixed emotions of just being happy to still have a football team alongside a want and expectation to win. On today's show we discuss: Recovering from Financial Disaster: They story of Leyton Orient's near terminal financial crisis; what happens when a club runs out of money and the owner will no longer cover the losses? Relegation to non-league football and the impact falling through the decisions has on a club. How do you claw yourself out of a situation like this. The stories are often of disaster, but Leyton Orient have more than recovered in the past few years. Are they in a better place now than they were before? The Value of New Ownership: What are the ambitions of new owner David Gandler and why did he decide to buy the club earlier this year? Where does the value lie in modern day football? What areas of the club need to be developed to both elevate the fan experience and make more money to fund the desired growth? What does it take to build a new stadium: from finding a site to financing a project in the hundreds of millions. Why this is an opportunity to build something that stretches beyond football; the value of a multi-sport model. Matching Ambition with Longevity: Finding the balance between financial sustainbility and ambition is the hardest part of modern football ownership/management; what is Orient's plan to chase promotion while ensuring the business is safe? How much does it cost to get promoted? The crazy finances of the Championship laid bare... What did Mark learn from his time in charge of Brentford and applying some of the model they have so successfully been able to implement to reach and thrive and in the Premier League. The ambition is to be a sustainable Championship club, but do they dare to look beyond this? Fast forward 150 years, and now NFL legend Tom Brady owns part of the club! How did that happen?! And how did they go from League One heartbreak to smashing records and storming back into the Championship? This one's got drama, goals, dodgy paperwork, and a team that never gives up. There is doom, there is outrageous positivity; it's that time of the year though, isn't it?Bring on Barnsley. COYG. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Vuskovic, that's it. That's the description. What on earth are we about to unleash unto the Premier League? Surely we won't be loaning him out. Not that we want to get excited about a 45 minute runout against League One opposition, but he may well be our best player already, say Jack and this week's guest Hunter Godson. It's worth mentioning the Kudus was also really great, and is spoken about at length.Where do they all play, you ask? Well, we try to answer that too. Some chat on potential transfers, what we need, what we're expecting from this season as things stand etc. Also, Sonny... what's going on there? As ever, if you've enjoyed the pod, please leave a rating and a review, and why not consider sharing it with your Spurs supporting chums?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/ruletheroost. Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Jason McGovern, TJ Ramini and Marlon via Spurs Kings TV as Luka Vuskovic registered a goal and an assist on his first appearance in our colours as we began a new era under Thomas Frank with a 2-0 win at Reading on Saturday. The 18-year-old defender, who linked up with the Club earlier this month after his move from Hajduk Split was agreed in 2023, was introduced as a half-time substitute against the League One side and wasted no time in making an impact, flicking on a corner from fellow new boy Mohammed Kudus - who also caught the eye with an impressive display - to tee up Will Lankshear for the opener four minutes into the second period, then picking out the bottom corner with a sharp finish from Kudus' pass a few moments later to double our lead. With two lots of 11 players deployed either side of half-time, it was a useful opening to our pre-season campaign and gave our new Head Coach a chance to run the rule over plenty of players. Forward Madison and their flamingo crest is one of the more recognizable brands in USL League One. As one of founding members of League One back in 2019, with consistent attendance numbers of ~4,000 fans, the club has been a model of what clubs can strive to be in the 3rd tier of Professional soccer in this Country. Rob Chappell has been following along since the beginning through his podcast, “Talkin' Flock.” The podcast has been giving Forward Madison supporters an inside look into their club since those early days of 2019. Rob and I dive into what has made this project so successful in the League One space.
Ray Bradshaw is joined by A View From The Terrace presenter and Stenhousemuir fan Craig Telfer and Spartans-supporting football writer Moira Gordon to preview the upcoming season in Leagues One and Two.
On this edition of SportsJam with Doug Doyle, Westchester SC owner Mitch Baruchowitz talks about his expansion team in the USL League One
In Part Two of our chat with the Argyle Chairman, Simon discusses the club's new football structure with Archie and Tom, before turning his attention to the loss of players following relegation — many due to release clauses — and how the club has since moved quickly to recruit new players in line with a brief for greater flexibility. He also shares his observations on the growing gulf between the EFL Championship and League One, and how the club intends to build on gains made through player trading to date. The trio then move on to the collapse of the transaction that would have seen new investors join the club, and discuss the fallout in terms of this season, future major projects, and the type of individuals Plymouth Argyle are seeking in the next round of investment. This week Jordan & Gaz are joined by former Blackburn, Bolton, Morecambe, Charlton, Burton & Carlisle defender...SAM LAVELLE! Sam sits down with the boys to discuss all things football from coming through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers to currently life as a free agent. The lads start the pod by talking about life as a free agent and what that looks like for footballers, including PFA Pre-Season, interest from clubs and ambition to play as high as possible. Sam then talks about his difficult few seasons at Carlisle as the club suffered back to back relegations from League One to the National League and why the club is far too good to be that low down the pyramid. Gaz then asks Sam which 3 people from football would he invite over for dinner & drinks which then leads to Sam's incredible impression of former Morecambe manager Jim Bentley. They then chat openly about Sam's time at Blackburn & Bolton and the casino gambling culture that was rife at the time and how both Gaz & Sam overcame their struggles. The trio then discuss the return of the infamous football footman, hilarious stories about him and how Sam ended up meeting him in person! Sam then chats about his big move to Charlton, that cup run where they played Brighton and Manchester United followed by a horror loan move to Burton. Finally they end the pod discussing the best players that Sam has played with and what the future holds next for the EFL defender. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
