Episode Notes Early in his finance career, a budding C-suite executive had a job at a global corporate consulting firm that included bagel runs for his colleagues. The humbling experience taught him about the value of working in tandem with others, perseverance and other soft skills that exist beyond a spreadsheet. Tune into this episode of “Smarter” to hear how that executive, now a chief financial officer, saw skills in a whole new light because of a family member's job search, and the power of finding purpose in a profession.
Phenom CFO Davinder Athwal tells us that he has a personal connection to his company's mission. Near the beginning of our talk, he shares a touching story about his father, a highly skilled individual who struggled to find a job in the UK. This personal experience fuels his passion for Phenom's mission: to help a billion people to discover the right work. It's not just about finding a job; it's about finding the right job that matches skills with aspirations, as Athwal is eager to explain. The Phenom platform is not just another job-matching site, he points out. Using pattern recognition technology to match candidates with jobs, Phenom's approach goes beyond what's written on a resume to recognize all of the essential skills needed for a particular job—even those not listed on an application. Athwal joined Phenom during a challenging time in the industry, one that led to a strategic moment when he had to make the decision to prepare the company for cash flow break-even—a move that would turn out to be not only critical but also crucial for the company's future survival and growth.
In this hour-long episode, the Four Eyes hosts dive deep into a conversation with Dr. Davinder Sidhu, an Optometrist practicing in British Columbia, regarding business metrics that apply to business owners and associate doctors. This is a very rare topic of discussion for young Optometrists, as business training is not taught in most Optometry schools. Dr. Sidhu shares very detailed information about the numbers we should be paying attention to in a practice, and how we can use those numbers to increase profits as well as patient satisfaction. The best part about this episode is that Dr. Sidhu's advice applies not just to business owners, but also young associate Optometrists who are wanting to grow and become more involved within their practice location. You will not find the depth of this information anywhere else in the Optometry world, so be sure to listen to the entire episode and take down notes! The peripheral iridotomy (PI) is one of the most common procedures in ophthalmology. In theory, the PI is performed to open up a narrow angle, both to prevent the chance of angle closure glaucoma, and to treat any component of chronic angle closure. But what does the evidence actually show? Practically speaking, how effective is the PI in preventing angle closure? What would happen if we were a bit more conservative in when we chose to do PIs? In today's episode, Isabelle Imbert takes a small step aside from what is generally considered as Islamic art to welcome Davinder Toor, published art collector specialised in the artistic productions of the Sikh, a religion born in the hills of Punjab in India in the 16th century, and practised today around the world. Davinder first took an interest in Sikh art when he was 17 years old, and started actively collecting a few years later. In the episode, they talk about the conception of his extensive collection and how he approaches acquisitions and deaccessions, but also about the growing market of Sikh art, the inherent risks for new collectors, and storytelling through art for the current and the next generations of Sikhs.
