Huge AI News as we go hands on with Anthropic's Claude Fable 5, the most powerful AI model ever released. Spoiler: We found it very good. What happens next?   This week on AI For Humans, Gavin Purcell and Kevin Pereira break down everything you need to know about Claude Fable 5, the first publicly available model in Anthropic's frontier Mythos class. We share our own hands-on impressions, look at the one-shot demos blowing up the internet, and get into the messy parts too: the token burn complaints, the trigger-happy safety guardrails that route some prompts to Opus 4.8, and the reversal Anthropic made after the community pushed back. Towards the end of last year, Australia did something no other country had ever tried: it banned social media for kids under 16. And a bunch of others are following with similar laws, first Denmark, then France, then Indonesia and Austria. All in, there are now more than 25 countries that have either implemented, or are actively considering, social media bans for kids. It seems like Canada is moving there as well. In April, the Liberal party adopted a non-binding motion to restrict young people's access to both social media and AI chatbots. All over the world, you can hear parents breathing a sigh of relief. They've spent the last decade watching their kids become hooked on their devices, and now we're doing something about it. It looks like we're finally going to get our kids back. But researchers like Candice Odgers are skeptical. Odgers is a psychology professor at UC Irvine who's been studying the digital lives of young people for almost 20 years now, long before anyone was worried about what social media was doing to their brains. She says there isn't really any research to suggest these bans will work. But her argument goes even deeper than that: she says the idea that smartphones have caused a youth mental health crisis just isn't supported by the evidence. So as governments all over the world start to kick kids off social media, and maybe even AI chatbots as well, Candice Odgers thinks we're making a serious mistake. And I want to know if she's right. Andrew flies solo on today's show, which… coincidentally features a bunch of law from the 1980s. Learn how a 1981 advertisement for a soon-to-be defunct video game system shaped the law of copyright into what it is today after Atari sued Magnavox to pull a Pac-Man clone off the shelves.     In the second story, we talk about the death of antitrust law. What once broke up the phone company's monopoly is now so defanged that just two companies control almost all of the components that go into your PC. Oh, and the phone company basically reassembled itself.   The computer graphics monopoly set us on the path where computer are rented, not owned. And taking advantage of that was a company that targeted teenagers who want the latest and greatest gaming rig (but can't afford it).

2024 FanX Animation Voice Actor Panel Recorded live at FanX 2024, this episode of Conversations with Craig features Craig moderating a lively animation voice actor panel with Phil LaMarr, Spencer Grammer, Fred Tatasciore, Sean Chiplock, Khary Payton, and Jess Harnell. The conversation moves from career stories and fan questions to voice acting techniques, music, artificial intelligence, convention life, and the unpredictable comedy that happens when a room full of performers starts riffing off each other. The panelists discuss how voice acting has changed as fans have become more familiar with the people behind their favorite animated characters and video game roles. Audience questions lead to stories about auditions, musical inspiration, performance anxiety, AI, and the challenge of bringing emotion to even the smallest lines. The panel gets wonderfully ridiculous with dramatic Pac-Man, Call of Duty Zombies holiday music, cage-free zombies, emotional dot-dot-dots, and a surprisingly confident ruling on whether water is wet. “I'm damned displeased to be killed in this fashion.” - Fred Tatasciore Want more exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes stories from the people who bring your favorite characters to life? – The episode opens with a short introduction from Donald Trump praising “one of the most successful business leaders… Michael Dell” and his “really exciting announcement.” – Brett Butt follows with a nostalgic anecdote about growing up before the Internet and World Wide Web, and remembering early video games like Pac-Man, Asteroids, Wizard of War, Scrambled, and Defender. He jokes about wishing for something people now have. – Mike Dell then introduces himself (“Like Dell's World… That's me”) and frames the episode as covering two major topics: technology (how tech works and is used) and personal updates. He notes customer service issues he'd complained about previously have not improved. – Personal updates: – He reports attending multiple recent funerals: mentions having been to “three funerals in the last six months, or two,” and that he's about to go to another in Detroit that weekend. – He names specific losses: Todd Cochran, founder of Blubrry, who passed “late summer, early fall”; his wife's best friend Mary in Grand Haven, who died of lung problems and was younger than them; and his uncle Bill Busby, who turned eighty-eight at a recent party, helped start Motorola Semiconductors, was a US Air Force veteran (crew chief on a B-57 or B-58), and then passed away Monday morning. He says he and his nearly 98–99-year-old grandmother will be traveling to Detroit for that funeral. – Health update: Mike had a torn retina in his right eye, underwent emergency surgery, had to be face-down post-op while a bubble/oil was placed in the eye. At his second post-op checkup the doctor said things are looking good; vision in that eye is blurred by the oil bubble while the other eye is 20/20. He expects the oil to be removed and vision to clear later. He says this grounds him for about six weeks. – He mentions a lingering low-level cold over the past month. – Recent events and work: – He attended Military Creator Con in Arlington, Texas (several hundred participants, veterans/active military/spouses), where he saw Jamie Jay, Christopher Lochhead, Gordon Firemark (podcast lawyer), and others. The event ran long days and was busy but enjoyable. – At Blubrry he's been promoted to VP of Operations, overseeing teams and day-to-day work; Barry (another cofounder) is now CEO. He encourages podcasters to contact him for help, states he uses Blubrry hosting and the PowerPress plugin, and plugs Blubrry's services. – Technology and AI: – He discusses AI-generated content broadly: YouTube's proliferation of AI-narrated slideshow-style or AI-generated videos; his guilty pleasure of “AI Karen stories” on YouTube (which he knows are AI and mostly fiction). – He references a MacRumors article reporting YouTube will automatically label AI videos even if creators don't, and applauds the move, predicting many viewers will prefer non-AI content when labeled. – He raises concerns about AI in podcasting: AI-voiced podcasts and companies generating massive amounts of AI podcast content. He names a company, Inception PointAI, that reportedly generated a lot of AI podcast content and moved from Spreaker to Megaphone/Spotify; he says such AI content can hallucinate and produce factually untrue information, and that some AI podcasts present content as true. – He describes his own measured use of AI: he uses AI for transcripts and some artwork that he then tweaks, and he tried a cloned AI voice for one episode a few years ago but it didn't sound right. He notes telltale patterns of AI-written scripts and advises never to ask AI for its opinion. – He touches on scams: modern scam emails are harder to spot because language models clean up grammar; he warns about requests for immediate payment, iTunes/gift cards, or crypto as signs of scams. – Advertising and social media observations: – Criticizes YouTube mid-roll ads that interrupt videos, and the perceived decline in value of TV ads—locally seeing many online gambling ads in Michigan. – Observes AI activity on Facebook: AI agents entering groups to start conversations (sometimes inane or provocative) and AI-generated video shorts (e.g., airplanes doing impossible things). He dislikes Facebook's prompts to read more on Threads and says he doesn't want more social media accounts. He mentions being on LinkedIn, using X a little, and participating on Reddit, and says he plans to use a flip phone when he retires. YouTube Will Now Automatically Label AI Videos Even When Creators Don’t – Podcasting industry and advice: – Clarifies his use of “podcast” to mean generally audio (though he acknowledges podcasts can be video) and emphasizes that podcasting is a distribution method open to anyone. – Contrasts highly produced, broadcast-style podcasts (teams of producers and sound designers) with indie, authentic podcasts (one person talking into a microphone from a shed). He values indie authenticity and accessibility. – References a report by Tom Webster of Sounds Profitable noting people seek authentic-sounding podcast audio. He warns the industry is bifurcating between highly produced shows and indie creators. – Gives practical advice: podcasting is inexpensive and accessible (buy a microphone, record, compress to MP3, upload to hosting or WordPress to create an RSS feed). Suggests inexpensive cover art via Fiverr and mentions Blubrry hosting around fifteen dollars. Warns that podcasting generally won't replace a day job quickly—monetization takes time and consistency. – Lists three elements for podcast success: consistency, authenticity, and having content that is interesting/informative/compelling (he stumbles on phrasing but leaves the point authentic). He notes technology barriers are lower now; you don't have to be a geek. – Explains distribution parity: small indie shows can sit beside big shows like Joe Rogan in directories; one can succeed without becoming huge. His personal goal is to have a place to speak freely rather than chase large monetization. – Plans and format changes: – He says they will restart the Podcast Insider show with a revamped, more conversational format with two or three hosts discussing industry trends (e.g., trend toward video). – Discusses video: video has always been part of podcasting but is getting more prominent; video production is harder (lighting, appearance, editing). Blubrry is working on a video product to better support creators. – Mentions his short-form series “Cup of Traverse City” (daily, five minutes) which he took a month off from and tried to restart; he intends for it to be five days a week, five minutes, when resumed. – Reiterates he podcasts when it's fun and will take breaks when needed. – Closing: – He notes he has been talking for forty-five minutes, asks listeners if they're still subscribed and what they think about technology trends (is tech “going off the deep end” or is he being a curmudgeon?), invites feedback via email (mike at mike dell dot com), and signs off saying “Catch me later.”

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1349: Today we talk about Mitsubishi cutting weak dealers while betting on a product comeback, the growing FTC pressure pushing vendors toward all-in pricing transparency, and Pizza Hut discovering the hottest new trend in retail… 1990s nostalgia complete with red cups and Pac-Man.Mitsubishi is shrinking its dealer network while promising a future product comeback. The brand has cut underperforming stores, frustrated some retailers with low profits and aging products, but says a new EV and refreshed lineup could turn things around.Mitsubishi's U.S. dealer count has dropped 16% since 2019, falling from 355 stores to just under 300 today.CEO Mark Chaffin says the strategy is “quality over quantity,” replacing low-volume stores with higher-performing operators expected to sell 3-5x more vehicles.Dealers say profits are razor thin, with many relying on used cars to stay afloat while struggling with an aging lineup and heavy fleet sales.Mitsubishi is betting on its “Momentum 2030” plan, including a new electric crossover this fall and several electrified models through 2030.One frustrated dealer summed it up bluntly: “Eventually Mitsubishi may get there with the new product, but it's going to have to commit more to the U.S. if it wants to do well here.”As regulators tighten the screws on vehicle pricing transparency, vendors are racing to help dealers stay compliant. S&P Global Mobility and TrueCar both rolled out new tools designed to simplify fee disclosures, standardize pricing, and avoid FTC headaches before they become lawsuits.S&P Global Mobility launched “FeeSync,” a free industrywide tool that lets dealers update fees across vendors and marketplaces from one central hub.The push comes as the FTC continues sending warning letters to nearly 100 dealer groups over pricing and advertising practices.TrueCar updated its platform to display all-in pricing upfront, including dealer fees and add-ons, with expandable disclosures for shoppers.TrueCar CEO Scott Painter said the platform's goal is “a transactional price that is good for both the dealer and the car buyer upfront, without negotiation.”Pizza Hut is leaning hard into retro vibes, remodeling stores to look like peak-1990s dine-in restaurants complete with Pac-Man, stained-glass lamps, and those iconic red cups. Turns out millennials will absolutely drive three hours for a little childhood comfort food.Since 2019, Pizza Hut has converted 144 locations into “Pizza Hut Classics” with throwback décor and dine-in experiences. Some remodeled stores are now top performers, with customers traveling long distances just to relive the experience. The nostalgia push comes as Pizza Hut closes underperforming locations while rival Domino's continues expanding aggressively.Pizza Hut is also reviving its legendary “BOOK IT!” reading program, rewarding kids with pizza for summer reading goals.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast  as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Send us Fan MailA single quarter on an arcade cabinet used to mean something. It meant you were next, you were staying, and you were about to prove it in front of everybody. We chase that feeling from the jump, starting with a Mortal Kombat movie check-in and sliding straight into a real debate about the best fighting games of all time: Street Fighter, Tekken, classic combos, and why some games got “worse” once the super strings took over. If you love retro gaming, arcade nostalgia, and the culture around classic video games, this one turns into a time machine fast. From there we zoom out into the whole era: Pac-Man at the laundromat, Donkey Kong patterns, Tetris obsession, Contra codes, and the wild speed run of consoles from Atari and Intellivision to Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and Xbox. We also get into why gaming felt more social back then and why today's online party chat still isn't the same as a room full of people waiting their turn with quarters in hand. And because we can't stay in one lane, we pivot into sports talk and the way the NFL schedule release can swallow an entire night. Then it gets real: pickup basketball, old heads versus young legs, clock management, ball movement, and the one athletic ability we'd keep forever as we age. We close with Netflix recommendations, guilty-pleasure scripted drama, and a quick run through movies we're ready to see next. If you enjoyed the laughs and the nostalgia, subscribe, share this with a friend who lived at the arcade, and leave us a review. Recorded May 8, 2026 This week on Off the Rails, the gang celebrates finals week the only way higher ed AV/IT knows how: by watching a major cloud platform wobble and quietly whispering sweet nothings to the on-prem rack. The Instructure Canvas mess kicks off a discussion about cloud dependency, LMS integrations, sketchy APIs, cyber insurance, and the comforting lie that "hosted" means "not our problem." Then it's on to upcoming NWMET and InfoComm sessions about building local AI tools for AV design, documentation, math, and workflows… because sometimes the best cloud strategy is "don't." The main topic tackles higher ed media production studios, virtual production spaces, visualization labs, esports rooms, and all the other shiny innovation boxes campuses love to build before remembering someone has to staff, fund, maintain, and explain them. The crew digs into automation, realistic expectations, revenue potential, student involvement, and why your $3,000 LED volume is adorable. Finally, a listener's question about HyFlex classroom audio leads to ceiling mics, Catchbox, lectern mics, Dante, and the timeless truth that microphones are happiest when they're disappointing someone.   News story: https://www.kcur.org/education/2026-05-07/hackers-hit-university-of-missouri-system-and-9-000-other-canvas-schools   AVSF Presentations: NWMET Conference: https://www.nwmet.org "Weaponizing AI for AV and IT Design" Weds May 20, 100p InfoComm: https://www.infocommshow.org "From Prompt to Project: Applying AI to Higher Ed AV Design" Thurs June 17, 1000a   RDL Dante Headphone Amplifier: https://rdlnet.com/product/av-nh1/   Alternate show titles: It's just text / and 9,000 other schools!  Find me every vulnerability This is real; it could happen It's a really cool concept There's so much leakage that can happen What is happening in North Carolina?
