In our readings in Hebrews Paul is telling his fellow Jews about Jesus, that he is their one and only high priest. Priests had held important posts, playing a significant role in the life of Israel and had done so since the time of Moses, even when they were in captivity. All this was to be destroyed for their nation and its temple were about to cease. Paul's message was, “since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses …” [4 v.14,15] He understands and sympathizes because “in the days of his flesh … he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him …” [5 v.7-9] Jesus set the example for us, he knew what it was like to be human. But at the same time as being human his mind was ‘alive' to what God had caused to be written, he saw the real meaning of the God-inspired words of the prophets. This perception is behind Paul's lament that his fellow Jews “have become dull of hearing” [5 v.11] – and today the same thing has happened to all nations despite the fact that God's word is available in all language: but the final ingathering (Matt. 13 v.30) is taking place – and we sense it is nearly complete.. There is a near total failure today to appreciate how “the word of God is living and active …” [4 v.12] and provides “solid food … for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” [5 v.14] – nearly everyone, then and now had become “dull of hearing.” Paul also complains they are “unskilled in the word of righteousness.” [v.13] Let neither of these things be said of those who read and reflect on God's word every day.

It deserves especial notice, that the Apostle does not say, -Ye have need-- but, -Ye are become such as have need.- They were once in more favourable circumstances for spiritual instruction. They had, by their indolent neglect of the proper nourishment of the mind, spoiled their spiritual appetite and power of digestion, bringing themselves back as it were to a state of second childhood. They had forgotten what they had learned,-they had lost in a good measure the habits they had acquired.

Teaching on Hebrews 5-11-14
Elder Anthony Valentine preaches from Hebrews 5:11-14
11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. 6 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits. The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Heb 5:11–6:3.

God's Warning of Becoming Dull of Hearing: In our passage today, the Lord gives a warning to a people who were once on-fire for Him and His Word, but now have become dull of hearing. The Holy Spirit had to tell these people, who no doubt thought they were doing great, “hey you are not doing as great as you think, in fact you are dull of hearing”. Here is the great consideration for every one of us…..could we be dull of hearing of God's Word, and not even realize it? Today's passage gives us a spiritual health check, and if need be, a prescription and health plan on how to be well and stay strong. Calvary Chapel Anne Arundel | Pastor Ray Bollas

Many Christians are dull of hearing. They can't or won't concentrate and focus on learning God's Word. “We have many things to say but they are hard to be uttered seeing that you are dull of hearing” (Heb 5:11). You can become dull of hearing from a lack of exercising your mind. You develop your faith by hearing God's Word taught and applying it. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Rom 10:17). Spiritual growth takes time and concentration. Your pastor's job is to equip you so that you can be spiritually autonomous and stand-alone on God's Word. Jesus Christ tells us “Take My yoke and learn from Me. My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matt 11:29-30). You can't do this if you are dull of hearing. Deliverance and repentance in your hearing…
Scripture tells us that there are those who have ears to hear but do not hear! Our faith is dependant upon that hearing. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. There is more to hearing than our eardrum picking up sound waves and our brains deciphering those sounds. There is a spiritual side to our hearing and then the evidence of our hearing that brings forth fruit. Join us as we open up the gospel and discover how good our hearing is!

Spiritual immaturity over a prolonged amount of time will give way to accepting things that will bring corruption. Hebrews 5:11-14 warns against the dangers of becoming “dull of hearing” and not progressing from consuming spiritual “milk” to consuming “solid food”. To be fully prepared to face the evil in the world today we must grow […] The post Dull of Hearing- Part Two of The Deception of Immaturity appeared first on Christian Ministries Church.

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. 11 About this, we have much to say, and it is hard to explain since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God.
