Today on the show, Boomer and Gio break down a lackluster World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium, detailing Spain's victory, Zlatan Ibrahimovic's blunt TV farewell, and the future of soccer in America. On the diamond, the guys recap the Yankees-Dodgers split featuring Jazz Chisholm Jr., Francisco Lindor powering the Mets past the Phillies, and the online heat facing Tommy Lugauer. Plus, they debate Bryson DeChambeau's controversial penalty at the British Open, roast Tom Brady's new "cornball status," guess 1998's highest-earning celebrities, and tackle everything from Cam Skattebo's backflip injury to Jordan Clarkson's nightclub heroism and Boomer's farting habits.

The topic of this episode is, “Who were the House Appropriations Committee Surveys and Investigations Staff and what did they do?”More than a decade ago, a friend and longtime veteran of Capitol Hill informed me that he had received a contract to work for the House Appropriations Committee Surveys and Investigations staff. I had no idea who these folks were, despite all the years I had spent working for Congress. When I asked him for details, he explained to me that he really couldn't share much about who they were and what he was doing. I thought that was odd, but I didn't cry and I let it go. I remember thinking it was something that I should look into, but I had more pressing research and life responsibilities, and I never conducted that research. As fate would have it, a couple of years ago, I ran into Professor Matthew Dull at an academic conference. He is a tenured professor at the Center for Public Administration & Policy at Virginia Tech University. To my wonder and delight, he informed me that he had written a lengthy paper on the history of the House Appropriations Committee Surveys and Investigation staff. We talked about what he learned about this mysterious corps of congressional staff, and I was riveted. I promised myself that I would not only read that paper but that I'd bring him on the Understanding Congress podcast, and finally, I'm making good on that.So Professor Matthew Dull is with me today to tell what he has learned.Read the full transcript here.Read the archival documents here.

Day 4 on the Croisette, and the Cannes Festival of Creativity is in full swing. The Cannes Cut series is proudly presented by System1.Vanessa Chin, VP Marketing at System1, opens with a live field dispatch: which campaigns are actually scoring at Cannes, what the new Creator Effectiveness Playbook says about briefing for emotional impact, and why Dunkin' took gold while Kit Kat posted one of the highest out-of-home scores System1 has ever recorded. She also tackles the question the industry keeps circling - is AI the creative revolution everyone promised, or just a better production tool? Then the feature interview.Orlando Wood, Chief Creative Officer at System1, argues that dull advertising is structural, not incidental.Media fragmentation, measurement frameworks calibrated for the wrong school of advertising, and rules-based creative thinking all work against artistry before a single brief is written. Drawing on advertising history from Toulouse-Lautrec to Bernbach, and neuroscience from Ian McGilchrist, Orlando maps the war between showmanship and salesmanship - and explains why applying one school's measurement philosophy to the other destroys the work. The episode closes with the Buzz Cut: the sights and sounds from the attendees. Ty Heath from LinkedIn shared her perspective on life inside the B2B Lions jury room, WARC APAC's Rica Facundo on the three ceilings of social, Hannah Riberdhal from Brand Marketing Sweden on what this year's Cannes sounds like compared to four years ago, and two Young Lions competitors fresh off a 24-hour brief.Timestamps0:00 Opening - Vanessa Chin (System1) on Cannes testing, AI, and the Creator Effectiveness Playbook12:23 Feature interview - Orlando Wood on why dull advertising is structural, not a talent problem23:06 Fluent devices, coherence vs consistency, and the living brand33:08 The history of showmanship and salesmanship - and why creators may be bringing artistry back37:11 Measuring creative: why salesmanship measurement destroys showmanship work40:10 Post Pod debrief41:18 Buzz Cut - Ty Heath (LinkedIn B2B Institute), Rica Facundo (WARC APAC), Hannah (Brand Marketing Sweden), Young LionsReferencesSystem1 https://system1group.com/Advertising Principles Explained (course with Sir John Hegarty) https://advertisingprinciplesexplained.com/System1 Creative Dividend Report https://system1group.com/the-creative-dividendSystem1 Creator Effectiveness Playbook https://system1group.com/the-creator-effectiveness-playbookLemon: How the Advertising Brain Turned Sour - Orlando Wood (book) https://system1group.com/lemonThanks for keeping us in your ears, stay sharp everyone.

STRAP IN!!!!! Star Wars is BACK!!!!!!! ............... But a what Cost $$$$$$$$$$ On the latest episode of Fandom Awakens Radio, your hosts David Senden and Kyle Wagner reaction to the latest trailer for the Mandalorian & Grogu, well *sigh* here we are a meer 7 days from the Mandalorian & Grogu, hype levels should be OVER the DEATH STAR this close to the release of a Star Wars movie Thus far initial reactions from early reviews out there have ranged from “Mandalorian and Grogu is a blast on the big screen. It captures everything that makes Star Wars special. Heart, adventure, and scale, while telling a story that actually feels worthy of theaters. This is Star Wars at its best.” To: “One of the weakest ‘Star Wars' movies. An emotionless, predictable experience that doesn't push Din Djarin anywhere interesting. Dull, unexciting fight scenes; just CGI monsters. Action figures mashed together. A long, colorless made-for-TV movie.” HA certainly sounds like yet another Solo: A Star Wars Story 2018 split LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL that went well last time BOTH yours truly and co-host Kyle Wagner are seeing in Thursday, and we will have on the REGULAR flagship Fandom Awakens Radio pod a FULL review in the coming weeks ............... Like our SHOW sign off says which is very Mando influenced obviously You can like Star Wars warm, you can like Star Wars cold, you can like Star Wars Mustafarian HOT but at the end of the day ............
