Marcus Buckland and Tom Barclay pore over Tottenham's 5-3 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, asking whether - despite the five goals conceded - it was the response Thomas Frank had demanded, highlighting the performance of Randal Kolo Muani and looking ahead to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday. Apologies for the sound quality of Tom B's contribution on this pod - unfortunately he didn't have his mic out in Paris and that's the reason for the poor sound. We've given Tom a yellow card and warned him to ensure he has mic next time! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Don and Tom tackle investor “magical thinking,” especially the belief that private equity, non-traded REITs, and other illiquid “exclusive” investments offer hidden superior returns. They walk through Jason Zweig's recent reporting on a Florida pension fund that locked up money, paid higher fees, and earned under 1% a year. The conversation underscores why liquidity, transparency, and diversification matter far more than complexity or exclusivity. In this episode of The Sleeping Barber Podcast, Marc and Vassilis sit down with Adam Morgan (Eat Big Fish) and Dr. Karen Nelson-Field (Amplified Intelligence) to talk about one of marketing's most overlooked money pits — dull media. You've heard of dull ads — but what about dull media? From perfume that smells like burning money to attention metrics that flip our measurement logic upside down, this conversation exposes how marketers might be wasting more budget on where they show up than what they show.Together, they unpack:Why the real cost of dullness might live in your media plan, not your creative. The massive gap between viewable and actually seen impressions. How cheap CPMs can quietly destroy ROI.Why challenger brands suffer most when attention is lost. And why the smartest marketers start from one brutal truth: nobody cares — so make them. It's a lively, insightful, and often hilarious conversation that will make you rethink everything from your media mix to your measurement frameworks.Key TakeawaysDull media wastes more money than dull creative.Attention metrics are becoming the new standard.“Viewable” ≠ “Seen.” Stop confusing impressions with impact. The cheapest media often delivers the lowest ROI — a false economy.Challenger brands face double jeopardy when cutting corners on attention.Budget pressure is no excuse for bad planning.Attention isn't a metric — it's a design principle.Marketers must challenge models built on impression volume.Setting the bar higher is the only way to make media work harder.Removing waste and reinvesting in effective attention drives better results.Chapters00:00 - Introduction to Dull Media and Marketing Waste03:06 - The Cost of Dull Media vs. Dull Creative06:00 - The Impact of Media Delivery Mechanisms08:55 - The Concept of Seen vs. Unseen in Advertising12:02 - Innovative Approaches to Highlighting Media Waste15:01 - Attention Metrics and Their Importance18:06 - The Challenge of Changing Industry Standards20:53 - The Role of Budget Pressures in Media Choices26:48 - Challenging Assumptions in Media Engagement30:34 - The Cost of Dull Media34:06 - The Double Jeopardy for Challenger Brands38:46 - Understanding Attention as a Design Principle42:30 - Setting the Bar Higher for Media EffectivenessSupporting Links:The Extraordinary Cost of Dull - System1 GroupThe Cost of Dull Media | Dr Karen Nelson-Field (amplified.co)Le Cout Dennui - The 198bn Cost Of Dull Media

So many of us (pet parents and pros) get tangled up in “shoulds”. My dog should behave better. I should know how to fix this.People shouldn't think my dog is “bad.”But what if some of the hardest parts of living with our pets aren't really about their behavior… but about the pressure we put on ourselves? In this episode of Enrichment for the Real World, Emily and Tiffany unpack how our beliefs about control and perfection can make the whole family miserable, and how giving our pets agency and ourselves grace can bring the joy back.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 1️⃣ Let Go of Perfection – So much stress with our pets comes from our own expectations. When we stop trying to be the “perfect” pet parent and allow room for mistakes (theirs and ours), we create more joy and less shame for everyone involved.2️⃣ Let Dog Be Dog – Dogs are beasty beasts. They are real animals with real emotions. They're not little furry humans or obedience robots. Giving them agency, honoring their full range of feelings, and embracing their quirks helps build trust and connection.3️⃣ Play, Curiosity, and Chaos Are Healthy – Enrichment isn't just prescriptive, structured activities. Enrichment is curiosity, communication, and shared silliness. Lean into the chaos, celebrate the weird moments, and remember that play and joy are just as important as training plans. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.More from Pet HarmonyPet Parents: enrichment ideas and practical behavior tips
What does it mean to live a life that is never dull? For Chris Jordan, the answer has been unfolding since he was twelve years old, standing in front of his grandfather’s headstone. Etched into the stone were six words his grandmother chose: It was never dull. What started as a simple phrase became a mantra that shaped every risk, every leap, and every choice Chris has made since. How a childhood visit to a cemetery planted a lifelong guidepost Why dropping out of college and leaving comfort behind felt more true than staying safe The ways creativity, storytelling, and encouragement became his life’s real work Chris shows us how even small words can carry us through fear and uncertainty, helping us choose the path that feels alive. His story is a reminder that our lives don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Listen now and consider what phrase you’d want etched on your own life. Guest Bio: Chris Jordan is a personal brand strategist who helps entrepreneurs establish their authority and grow their business through intentional storytelling and content. For more than five years, he worked alongside top thought leaders including Lewis Howes, Daymond John, and Dr. Benjamin Hardy on their podcast and content strategies. Today, Chris runs his own consulting business, supporting entrepreneurs who want to share their stories, connect authentically, and build lasting impact. https://www.linkedin.com/in/imchrisjordan/
Think Quakers are all pacifism, porridge and quiet meetings?
Pastor Hans reminded us that Jesus does not want His followers drifting through life spiritually dull. In Mark 7 He challenged the Pharisees and His own disciples not to trade God's truth for empty tradition. What about us? Are we sharp to sin, to the condition of our hearts, and to where our lives are headed, or are we slipping into dullness? This message will push you to sharpen your faith where it matters most.

You've got information. People need to hear it. It's useful ... and it's dull. This circumstance is a common problem for people who work in communications, such as today's guest, Mark Deamer. One way to draw the disinterested is humor, if you get the balance right, which is why we open this week with Floppy and Cow. They're a couple of screwball characters — well, Cow is deeper than that — that Mark helped create to present basic messages around tech and cybersecurity at UC Davis a few years ago. They won a couple of awards from a university tech trade group. Mark, a Davis lifer who moved to town when he was 3, is a designer and illustrator by trade, has designed stage sets for local theater, and has created interpretive illustrations for locations and clients ranging from Davis Central Park to the Cache Creek Conservancy. He's one of those people in Davis whom you might not have met, in other words, but you might have seen his work. We talk about it all — design, art, where ideas come from — today on Davisville. Sloppy seams. Sagging walls. Zero strategy. If your booth looks like you don't care, that's exactly what your audience will believe.Too many companies treat trade shows like a checkbox, not a channel. They work with order takers, cut corners to save costs, and focus on the wrong things… then wonder why the event didn't deliver. But on the floor, it shows. Dull design. Generic messaging. An experience no one remembers. And the worst part? You're spending real money on that.In this episode, Pablo Gonzalez joins Matt to talk through what a high-impact booth actually looks like, and how to flip the conversation from “just get it done” to “make it count.”Learn:✅ How to spot order takers vs. partners who elevate your strategy✅ What truly great booths have in common (hint: it's not the size)✅ Why booth ROI starts way before install—with the right people in the roomIf you're serious about turning your trade show into a real growth driver, start here.----------------------------------Connect with Pablo GonzalezLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pablotheconnector/ Connect with Matt KleinrockLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matt-kleinrock-9613b22b/ Company: https://rockwayexhibits.com/
