This week Dr. Syintist, Chump Slap, and Poppascotch watched a video game movie about a hidden gem called Echo Night. It was good. Come hear us talk about it!
Pause Musicale : MaidRips (The 11th One) - Wild Wild Rogues Gallery (Wikki Wikki Mix)
We check out Echo Night 2, a game never officially released in the west and only recently patched with a fan translation. We discuss the many ways in which it tries to build out the basic Ghost Friendship Simulator gameplay of the first one - with results that vary widely in quality - as well as its super-90s goth aesthetic and incomprehensible plot. It's Echo Night, alright!
We're throwing it back to the original Echo Night game, which also happens to be the original Walking Sim. We discuss the many facets of this 1998 PS1 classic, from its forward thinking design to its super crusty controls - stopping along the way to discuss, among other things, why all From Software NPCs end their sentences with "Heh heh heh..."
From Software might have set the world on fire in recent years with the game-changing Souls RPG series, but they've had a long history of innovation—even if their technology wasn't always up to snuff. And one of their more interesting creations of the PlayStation era came in the form of Echo Night, a first-person adventure game that bears a striking resemblance to the recent wave of "walking simulators" taking the indie world by storm. On this episode of Retronauts Micro, join Bob as he breaks down what makes this game so special—and why you should give it a try the next time you're browsing PSN. Be sure to visit our blog at Retronauts.com, and check out our partner site, USgamer, for more great stuff. And if you'd like to send a few bucks our way, head on over to our Patreon page!
