In 2011 the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund launched its current program: building a series of ten advanced treatment centers for military personnel suffering the effects of traumatic brain injury. July 22, 2008KAREN PRESSLEY, a convert from the Church of Scientology to Biblical Christianity and Founder of Wings of Love Ministries will give her personal testimony: “ESCAPING SCIENTOLOGY: AN INSIDER'S TRUE STORY.” Prior to her 16-year involvement with the Church of Scientology, Karen worked as a Hollywood fashion designer, as well as a music publisher with her (then) husband Peter Schless. Their work included hit songs like “On the Wings of Love.” Their careers took a turn (early 1980's) when they fell prey to the deception of Scientology. After 16 years in Scientology, God's grace removed the veil of deception from Karen's eyes. After two prior unsuccessful attempts to escape (1990 and 1993), her third attempt in 1998 led to final disentanglement from the group, but resulted in ex-communication from her friends and divorce from her husband of 20 years. Grace also enabled her escape and miraculous freedom from the cult's entrapment—including her eventual discovery of the power of prayer and faith in Christ. Since Karen began her “new life” in 1998, she has traveled from coast to coast sharing the amazing story of her experiences within the Church of Scientology (1982-1998), her three escapes (final in 1998), and the challenges of rebuilding a new life after losing everything she had. Hers is a story of courage, hope, and building character through trials and perseverance. Reunited with her family in Atlanta, she has a new life: new career, resumed her college education, new marriage, and counts her losses as gain through her new found faith in God.With a passion to communicate and with boldness to share this story, she has been invited to speak around the country. Her story has touched the hearts of thousands at women's conferences, church and ministry events, youth groups, colleges and universities. Pieces of Karen's personal story as an ex-Scientologist who escaped and and found faith in Jesus Christ have aired on NBC Dateline, CNN (Paula Zahn segment), “Secrets d'Actualite” on M6 Network in Paris, and local Atlanta shows, as well as local and national radio shows. She's been interviewed by the Los Angeles Times, St. Petersburg Times, Atlanta's Sunday Paper, and many Christian publications including Baptist Press News, The Christian Index, Missions Mosaic, On Mission Magazine, LifeWay's Open Windows and more. Read along to learn the English phrases A BLAST FROM THE PAST and TO HAVE BLAST.In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase a blast from the past. When we say something is a blast from the past, we're talking about something that reminds us of something that happened a long time ago. The best example of a blast from the past for me would be hearing a song on the radio from the late 80s, because that's when I was in high school. If I heard a song from the late 80s, from the 1980s, it would certainly be a blast from the past. It would remind me of that time when I was younger and much lighter and thinner than when I was in high school and nothing hurt.My shoulder didn't hurt, my knee didn't hurt, my hip... Not that many things hurt on my body, but you know what I mean. So a song or a TV show from a long time ago might be a blast from the past. The other phrase I wanted to teach you today is to have a blast. When you have a blast, it simply means that you are having fun. If I said I went to visit my brother the other day and I had a blast, past tense, I had a blast, it would mean that I really enjoyed visiting him and I had a really enjoyable time when I was there. So to review a blast from the past is anything that reminds you of the past. An old photo album, a song, a TV show, something from when you were younger. We would call it a blast from the past. And when you have a blast, it simply means to have a very enjoyable time, to have fun.But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Jerry. Hi Bob. To be honest, I don't really get why your short videos have to be exactly four minutes long. Did I miss something? By the way, I love both your channels and watch all of your films regularly, regardless of the length of your videos. And my response, it is because of the transcript in the description. If I talk for more than four minutes, the words don't fit because there is a limit of 5,000 characters. I like the convenience for people of having the transcript in the description. So thanks, Jerry_sweden, for that comment. And yes, now you know. Now you know the secret reason why these short English lessons are exactly four minutes long. By the way, there is a bird up in the tree there. Oh, it just flew away. I can actually hear birds around me, which is one of the signs of spring. But yeah, below the video there is a box where I can paste the description for the video. And if I talk for more than four minutes, the transcript doesn't usually fit in the box below the video. And I like to include that because people enjoy having the transcript. Some of you like to read the transcript before you watch the video, some of you like to read the transcript after, and then you watch the video again the next day. But it's just a good way for you to practise your English. So that's why, yes, there is a box below and there is a limit as to how many words and characters I can put in that box.So now you know the reason. Sometimes I talk too fast and then it also gets a little challenging to fit all of the words in. But, hey, not sure if you can hear. But I could hear a number of different birds.I'm not sure if you can see them up there on the tree. There are birds on the roof of the barn. It really feels like spring is starting to happen. I'm outside without a coat on, but it's actually a little too chilly for that.Oh, by the way, there's also geese in the river. They're probably pretty far away on the camera. Probably a little too far for you to see, but yes, spring break here in Ontario, Canada. That means I have the week off work. And also, it's starting to just feel a little bit like spring. Not yesterday. Yesterday was minus 6. It was way too cold. Anyways, thanks for watching. Remember, there is a complete transcript below if you want to read it. And I'll see you next week with another short English lesson. Bye.

Perhaps no one in the intelligent design research community of recent decades was more qualified to tackle the debate over Darwinism and design than Dr. Jonathan Wells. We lost Dr. Wells in 2024, but his work lives on in his groundbreaking books, articles, interviews, and even a full-length online course. Today's ID The Future out of the vault takes us all the way back to the summer of 2006 when Discovery Institute's Director of Communications Rob Crowther interviewed Dr. Wells about his new book of the time, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design. Senior Italian geneticist Giuseppe Sermonti has called Darwinism the “'politically correct' of science,” — that is, something that is held not because it is true but rather because of peer-pressure. Thus, Dr. Wells's book “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design” is aptly named because it ignores this peer-pressure to expose the weaknesses in the evidence for Darwinism with both humorous anecdotes and illuminating explanations of the most common sources of confusion. Greetings, Lowdowners—Deanna here. This spring, we're doing something a little different. Over the next few weeks, we're opening the gates a bit — giving free subscribers a taste of some of the exclusive stories, video, and behind-the-scenes Hightower that paid subscribers get regularly. If you've been on the fence about upgrading, consider this your invitation to see what you've been missing. And we're kicking it off with a doozy.Reader Elliot K. shared with us this video from C-SPAN that we didn't know existed—and it's a rollicking time capsule that you don't want to miss. Hightower hosts a storytelling evening over beers with friends Molly Ivins, Ed Wendler, Ty Fain, Buck Wood, and more, plus a surprise visit (and great story) from State Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos. Scholz Garten in Austin, the setting for this gathering, is historic for a number of reasons, but it's long been a watering hole for politicos of all stripes. As Buck Wood, then the director of Common Cause Texas, explains:Some of [the legislative bills] were literally hammered out right down here in the beer garden. There's been some great political fights here, there's been some pretty good fist fights here for years. Usually over political matters. There are too many stories in here nail the spirit of Texas politics, but my favorite is a spicy one from heroine Molly Ivins that I'd never heard before:One of great ongoing literary attractions of Scholz Beer Garden is the graffiti in the restrooms. And I myself have never frequented the men's room here, no matter how serious the cause. I do remember an exchange. This was back when Frank Erwin, he was chairman of the UT Board of Regents, he was Lyndon Johnson's man, and he really was in many ways a miserable sumbitch. I went to the ladies room one night and there was a note on the wall saying, “Do a good deed today, give Frank Erwin the clap.” Underneath which somebody else had written, “Give it to him? Hell, charge him for it!”Happy Friday everyone—let us know your favorite parts in the comments. In this final episode of Season 6 of The Living Artist podcast, we have decided to do a "Blast From The Past" episode, featuring an older, and never before heard interview, from around the time that the podcast all began. In this interview, the tables are turned and Preston is the one being interviewed by Mike Collins, of ShockBoxx gallery fame. During this interview, Preston talks about the business of art, building an artistic presence, his darker origins, fitting in with different communities, not taking yourself too seriously, movie references galore, podcast origins, and more. Above all, this interview embodies having fun with the interview process in general. We hope that you get something out of this episode, and stay tuned for Season 7, just around the corner! MONSTER PARTY WANTS YOU TO LAY BACK AND CUDDLE WITH A GOOD FILM. AND YES, WE MEAN THAT LITERALLY. JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, share a banquet of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films that always give them a case of the warm and fuzzies. Get ready to dig in as we present… MONSTER PARTY'S GENRE COMFORT FOOD!!! The film and TV tastes of the various hosts of MONSTER PARTY are as wide-ranging as the colors of the stars in Starcrash! Between the four of us, we go from high brow to low brow, mainstream to B movie, practical effects to CGI (within reason), and any other cool monster kid viewing we can lay our claws on. But there is a very unique class of cinematic serotonin that, during a stressful time or a lazy afternoon, can unfurrow our brows like a wet compress soaked in Romulan Ale. In this intimate and revelatory episode of MONSTER PARTY,  the guys reveal what special films have the ability to calm their nerves like a dog anxiety vest. But don't expect just the usual easy-on-the-system classics like Forbidden Planet or Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. Because for some, comfort can come from killer robots, murderous "children," or even some hills that have eyes. And speaking of which, what's the mystery meat in your comfort food? Joining us for this poo-poo platter of pleasing pictures is a guest making his MONSTER PARTY debut. And it's long overdue! He's not only a knowledgeable genre expert, but also the owner of one of the most amazing collectible stores in the country, BLAST FROM THE PAST! Please welcome… LARRY ROSS! Larry is a wonderful guy, and his shop is located at 3117 West Magnolia Blvd in historic Burbank, California. BLAST FROM THE PAST offers a stunning collection of new and vintage toys, comics, statues, movie posters, artwork, books, cosplay items, clothing, cards, and so much more. The store is also known for hosting a regular stand-up comedy show, as well as a challenging horror trivia night that always packs the house! Oh, and the staff is pretty outstanding as well! This week on The Bend Show: hiking headlines, we report on a deadly mountain lion attack and then how a drone delivered hope to a stranded hiker. Plus a blast from the past nostalgia. Retro fun—from “Rad” vs “6–7” to Red Rover and rotary phones—could Gen Z figure them out? Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Deadly Mountain Lion Attack Shocks Hiking Community Authorities have ended the search for mountain lions after a solo hiker was fatally attacked on a remote Colorado trail near Rocky Mountain National Park. The victim was identified as 46-year-old Kristen Marie Kovatch of Fort Collins. She was found dead on New Year's Day along the Crosier Mountain Trail, southeast of the small community of Glen Haven. Two hikers discovered her body around noon and reported seeing a mountain lion nearby, which they scared off by throwing rocks. One of the hikers, a physician, tried to help but could not find a pulse. An autopsy confirmed Kovatch died from asphyxia caused by compression to her neck. The Larimer County Coroner ruled her death an accident, saying her injuries were consistent with a mountain lion attack. It was Colorado's first fatal mountain lion attack since the late 1990s and only the fourth reported in North America over the past decade. Wildlife officers killed two mountain lions in the area later that day. Officials say one of the animals, a male, had human DNA on its paws. A third lion was reportedly seen, but after four days of searching with no further evidence, authorities called off the effort and reopened nearby trails. Kovatch's family described her as an ultramarathon runner who loved hiking and Colorado's public lands. Wildlife officials note there have been several mountain lion encounters in the region in recent months, including attacks on dogs and a runner who fought off a lion last fall. Colorado is home to an estimated 3,800 to 4,400 mountain lions, which are rarely aggressive toward humans but can pose a risk in isolated areas. Reference https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/search-ends-mountain-lions-after-hiker-fatally-attacked-128928116 Drone Delivers Lifeline to Stranded Hiker In a first-of-its-kind rescue, Phoenix firefighters used a delivery drone to help a stranded hiker on Camelback Mountain in Arizona last month. The hiker was spotted in the evening, just after 8 p.m., waving for help from the rocky Camel's Head area. With darkness setting in and the terrain too dangerous to navigate at night, rescuers knew they couldn't reach him until morning. Instead of leaving him without help, the Phoenix Fire Department launched a weight-bearing drone. The drone flew supplies directly to the mountaintop, delivering a cell phone, food, water, and a blanket to keep the hiker safe and comfortable overnight. Camelback Mountain sees dozens of rescues every year, often due to extreme heat and difficult trails. Until now, firefighters relied mostly on helicopters and ground crews. But drones—originally introduced in 2022 for wildfire monitoring—are changing how rescues are handled. The department's drones use thermal imaging and can carry up to six pounds. Each drone costs about $15,000, but firefighters say the technology is already proving its value. Crews were able to make multiple quick supply drops during the night—something that would have taken much longer on foot. Phoenix Fire officials say this mission highlights their commitment to using new technology to protect both firefighters and the public, and they plan to keep expanding how drones are used in future rescues. It is a solo this week with Rick out and a short one on top of it. Jack starts off with a focus on how different versions change the experience if you watch the English or Japanese versions. He breaks down the name swaps between Japanese and international releases, and he also points out major edits like censorship cuts and trimmed scenes, and compares how soundtrack and dialogue changes can completely shift the tone depending on which cut you watch. He also talks about how the movie feels more like a fan focused showcase where lots of characters pop in briefly, why the game style fight moments are the most fun part, and how the whole thing hit him as a nostalgic easy watch that made him want to pick up Street Fighter II again.About the anime:This movie straight up takes the Street Fighter II roster and builds a globe-hopping action story around them. Vega ( or M. Bison for the dub fans) is running Shadaloo (or Shadowlaw) and basically hunting down the world's strongest fighters so he can control or recruit them to help him with is goals, and Ryu sitting at the center of the target because of his pure raw potential. While Ryu's out doing his lone-wolf “I'm just here to get stronger” thing, Chun-Li and Guile are pushing the investigation and military side of the plot, trying to shut Shadaloo down before Vega can do any more damage. The movie's big focus is pretty straight forward, the fight scenes are well executed even if some of them pay homage to the game itself in a fun way and that “that character gets a moment” energy, more than deep mystery plotting.Next Week's Pick: “A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof”Have you had the chance to watch Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie or any of our previous selections?
