Joseph Fournier presents “part two” on how Pacific Walker circulation controls Earth's largest greenhouse effect: cloud longwave radiative forcing. He explains cloud radiative forcing terminology, cites literature claiming cloud greenhouse warming dwarfs CO2 forcing, and shows satellite-era links between trade winds, cloud shifts during ENSO, outgoing longwave radiation, and global/tropical temperature anomalies. He contrasts absorbed solar radiation, OLR, and Earth energy imbalance, arguing global averages can be dominated by regional Pacific dynamics. He reviews multidecadal “dimming/brightening” sunshine trends in Europe, Japan and the U.S., discusses aerosols vs natural drivers, and briefly addresses future uncertainty, AMO/IPO impacts, and solar/cosmic-ray hypotheses. 00:00 Welcome Back: Joseph Fournier & Why This Is “Part Two”02:15 Cloud Basics 101: Shortwave vs Longwave, Net Cloud Radiative Forcing05:51 Albedo Matters: How Small Cloud Changes Rival CO₂ Forcing08:40 Evidence in the Literature: Trendberth and Early Satellite Cloud Forcing Maps14:28 Clouds vs CO₂ Since 2000: Step-Change in Cloudiness and OLR16:56 Geography Over Global Averages: The Western Pacific Warm Pool Hotspot20:12 Warm Pool Size, SST, and Real-World Impacts (Winters, ENSO Timescales)22:48 Walker Circulation Explained: Where Deep Convection Sits in La Niña vs El Niño25:34 Warm Pool “Thermal Capacitor”: Thermocline Slosh, Water Volume, and Cloud Shift30:32 Sea Level Pile-Up and the Gravity-Driven Discharge During El Niño32:36 Radiation Signatures of ENSO: DLW/OLR Links to Niño Indices36:13 Cloud Forcing Ratios & Decadal Patterns: What El Niño Does to Warm Pool Clouds40:34 Global Signals: OLR vs Global Air Temperature and the ENSO Lead–Lag45:14 Trade Winds as the Control Knob: Linking Pacific Easterlies to Global OLR47:44 Tropical temps, OLR & trade winds: Walker circulation link48:42 Clouds as the “other knob”: absorbed shortwave (ASR) vs temperature50:29 2023 El Niño cloud changes: low-cloud cover & shifting albedo53:49 ASR vs OLR since 2000: the hiatus ends and the energy budget shifts55:44 Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) vs GAT: why the correlation breaks57:58 Seasonal cycle first: EEI swings, hemispheres, clouds & land–ocean contrast01:00:10 Wrap-up: two greenhouse effects & a call for academics to test it01:02:54 Sunshine hours & AMO: UK/Europe brightening over the 20th century01:07:26 Aerosols vs clouds: modern satellite trends and the “brightening” debate01:11:53 Global dimming/brightening goes global: Japan/China records & Pacific teleconnections01:12:56 Natural vs human drivers: when aerosols don't explain surface radiation01:18:13 Forecasting the next decade: sun, AMO/IPO, cooling claims & big uncertainties01:26:17 Closing remarks: slides, Substack, and the climate–energy–geopolitics linkMore information about Joseph Fournier: https://co2coalition.org/teammember/joseph-fournier/His 2024 presentation: https://youtu.be/P2hVW0R67CYJoseph's Substack: https://josephfournier.substack.com/X: https://x.com/JosephF55175005=========Slides, summaries, references, and transcripts of my podcasts: https://tomn.substack.com/p/podcast-summariesMy Linktree: https://linktr.ee/tomanelson1

Buying a business is hard. Holding and growing it for decades is even harder. Today, Gat Caperton shares how he acquired a struggling West Virginia furniture maker at age 29 and spent nearly three decades building Gat Creek into a resilient, American-made manufacturer. He discusses applying lean manufacturing, investing heavily in technology, and surviving the “China Shock” by differentiating on quality and values. Gat also reflects on tariffs, sustainability, and how domestic manufacturing supports rural communities, jobs, and long-term economic resilience.
We spreken over:
The Torah in Parashat Bo (12:40) states that Beneh Yisrael spent a total of 430 years in Egypt. Already Rashi notes the seeming contradiction between this verse and G-d's prophecy to Abraham Abinu that his descendants would endure a 400-year period of exile and oppression (Bereshit 15:13). Why did G-d predict a period of 400 years, if Beneh Yisrael were going to spend 430 years in exile? Rashi explains that the number depends on the starting point. The period from the birth of Yishak until the Exodus was 400 years, but Abraham received this prophecy thirty years prior to Yishak's birth, for a total of 430 years. The Shela Ha'kadosh (Rav Yeshaya Horowitz, d. 1630) offered a different answer, boldly asserting that G-d added thirty years to the period of exile. G-d informed Abraham that his descendants would live as foreigners for 400 years – but as a result of Mechirat Yosef, the sale of Yosef as a slave by his brothers, thirty years were added. The Shela explains that Yosef was brought out of the dungeon in Egypt and appointed the country's vizier at the age of thirty (Bereshit 41:46). In a sense, then, his first thirty years were stolen from him because of his brothers' cruelty. Therefore, it was decreed that Beneh Yisrael would endure an additional thirty years of oppression. The Shela's theory sheds light on the Gemara's comments in Masechet Sanhedrin (92) regarding the mistake made by the tribe of Efrayim. The Gemara says about the people of Efrayim, "Manu Le'ketz Ve'ta'u" – they miscalculated the end of the Egyptian exile. When they erroneously thought that the time for redemption had arrived, they left Egypt. But when they reached the Philistine region of Gat, they were attacked by the Philistines, and many were killed, while some managed to escape back to Egypt. The Gemara says that the remains of those people from Efrayim were the "dry bones" that were miraculously brought back to life in Yehezkel's famous prophecy. On the basis of the Shela's analysis, we can understand more clearly why the tribe of Efrayim made this mistake. If, indeed, an extra thirty years were added on account of the sin of Mechirat Yosef, then it stands to reason that the tribe of Efrayim – who descended from Yosef – assumed that they did not need to wait the additional thirty years. Since this period was a punishment for the crime committed against Yosef, they figured, it did not affect them, the descendants of Yosef. They therefore left Egypt thirty years early, at the end of the period of exile that was initially decreed. The question then becomes, why were the people of Efrayim wrong? Why were they killed for leaving Egypt early? The answer emerges from a passage in the Zohar regarding another consequence of Mechirat Yosef. Each year, on Tisha B'Ab, we recite a special Kinna (dirge) about the "Asara Harugeh Malchut" – the ten great Rabbis who were brutally murdered by the Romans. The Zohar teaches that these great Rabbis were Gilgulim (reincarnations) of the brothers, and they were killed to atone for the sin of Mechirat Yosef. Now in truth, only nine of the twelve brothers participated in Mechirat Yosef: Yosef, of course, was the victim; Binyamin, the youngest, was home and not involved; and Reuben was not present when the other brothers decided to sell Yosef, and in fact tried to rescue him. Why, then, were ten Rabbis killed to atone for the sin committed by only nine brothers? The answer is that Yosef himself bore a degree of guilt. While his brothers of course acted wrongly by selling him as a slave, he was partially responsible for their hostility. He reported to Yaakob about their alleged wrongdoing, and provoked them, arousing their hatred. Therefore, he, too, was accountable. This, then, was the tribe of Efrayim's mistake. The additional thirty years were decreed also for them, the descendants of Yosef, because he was partially responsible for what happened. Their decision to leave Egypt was thus a mistake, as they, too, were required to spend an additional thirty years in Egypt.

If technology is ruining the art of conversation, maybe it can save it, too. Anna Gat--poet, screenwriter, playwright, and founder of Interintellect--talks with EconTalk's Russ Roberts on how she's reviving the French salon in the digital age. They discuss why authority, moderation, and clear formats make conversation freer, not more constrained. They also explore why one of the greatest of modern plays--Tom Stoppard's Arcadia--is so resonant not only as a live theatrical performance, but also when read aloud, both alone and in a group. They conclude the episode by connecting Arcadia's themes to Gat's mission at Interintellect: Namely, preserving the value of thinking together across generations, disciplines, and worldviews.

In Week 3 of Songs For the Road, guest speaker Jason Workman leads us through Psalm 122—a song of gladness and longing for the gathered people of God. As pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem, God's people were reminded that worship isn't just about a place; it's about being built together into a spiritual home. From the earthly Jerusalem to the new Jerusalem, and from the temple built with stones to the temple of God's Spirit within us, we are invited to seek peace, unity, and the good of God's household. This message calls us to love the real church more than our ideal of it, and to look forward to the day when God makes all things new.For more information about Integrity Church, visit our website, http://liveintegritychurch.org Connect with us on social media throughout the week to stay up to date on events and things happening at Integrity! Amin. (Dod).

A Place Called Gethsemane The Passion Week account of Jesus happens during the annual feast of Passover for the Jews. This is one of three times that every Jew was required to travel to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. Jesus being a devout Jew went to the city as well not only for the feast but to complete His awesome mission. Not every Jew in the world could possibly come but it is estimated that 1 to 1.5 million people would be in the city during Passover. The picture below from the Temple Institute in Israel shows the 1000's entering the city at Passover. Since Jerusalem was a city of perhaps an estimated population 35,000 to 80,000 depending on the archaeologist, it is clear that the city could not handle such a dramatic increase in population. Every extra room was rented and those not finding rooms camped out on the hills nearby or they sought lodging in nearby towns like Bethlehem or Bethany. Many of those who camped out in the hills around Jerusalem would more than likely camp on the beautiful slopes of the surrounding hills like Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem. (Vander Laan 177) After Jesus and His apostles had completed the Passover Seder meal they went to the Mount of Olives to a place called Gethsemane at the Mount of Olives in an olive grove. The account can be found in Matt 26:36, Mark 14:32, Luke 22:39 and John 18:1. The word Gethsemane is the English transliteration of a Greek word which was based on two Hebrew words. (Picture below from Permaculture Research Institute, is a good idea of what the side of the Mt. of Olives would have looked like in Jesus' day). The first was GAT. The Hebrew word stands for a press. The second word is SHEMIN which means oil – like olive oil. The plural in Hebrew is Sheminim. Thus, Gat Sheminim means a press for oils and referred to in most cases an olive press. (Vander Laan 178) Today in Israel one can visit Tel Maresha in the Negev. At this tel archaeologists found the remains of a perfectly intact olive press. Olive presses were built in caves close to an olive grove. The cave itself would have “windows” cut into the walls and an air shaft in the roof. These “windows” and the airshaft were used to control the airflow and temperature since processing olives required a certain temperature range. The olives themselves were processed by first smashing them with a millstone to break open the skins. The smashed olives were then put into special porous bags and crushed under the weight of huge weighted down cypress logs in the main press room. The olive oil would run down into a basin which had a drain directly into a collection jar below the pile of bags of crushed olive pulp. The jar of oil would be sealed when filled and made ready to be taken to market. (Vander Laan 178) The picture below is of the Gat Sheminim at Tel Maresha Israel courtesy of Israel Travel Inc. Where is this exact location of where Jesus prayed and is there a connection to the Gat Sheminim and the word Gethsemane? As far as location is concerned, “Christian tradition has always placed Gethsemane on the lower slopes of the Mount of Olives – though today the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches hallow different sites.” (Reader's Digest 186) Recently, however, archaeologists working at the base of the Mount of Olives made a very interesting discovery. “A cave nearby was recently identified as containing an ancient olive press. Early 6th century tradition supports this cave as being Jesus' Gethsemane.” (Vander Laan 179) Moreover, no archaeological evidence nor evidence from ancient descriptions of the city of Jerusalem and its surroundings as ever found a place called the Garden of Gethsemane. This name is a modern label attached to an area that tourists would come to experience what the place called Gethsemane in the Bible was like. “The designation ‘Gethsemane' does not occur outside the gospels. Even Luke 22:39 omits the name, using the more general description, ‘the Mount of Olives.'”(Flusser 251) What we know for a fact is that the Mount of Olives had an olive grove and near olive groves one will find a Gat Sheminim or an olive press. One might conjecture the following based upon the fact that in the Jewish culture God taught His people difficult theological truths with the use of pictures – as in the case of the word tekton and 1 Peter 2:4-6. Jesus went to the Mount of Olives and entered the gat sheminim, or the olive press, to find a secluded place to pray. He would prefer the seclusion of the press since there were many possible pilgrims camping out on the slopes of the hill for Passover and the press would be located in a quiet cave. Perhaps Jesus knew the owner and was able to gain private access to the olive press. Again, all of this is conjecture but it is based on the archaeological evidence that is factual. In the gat sheminim, or in a location very close, we know that Jesus prayed and was in deep stress and anguish. In the account found in Luke 22:44 Jesus' sweat was like drops of blood. What is intriguing about this picture is a verse found in Isaiah 53:5. This verse for us Christians says He was crushed for our inequities. When one makes the connection between the discovery of the olive press and how it was used and these verses it would seem that God is showing us how Jesus was crushed – like an olive crushed by the weight of a huge cypress log with heavy weights attached. It would seem that God Himself is making use of the archaeological discoveries to open up the world of the Bible to us so that its meaning is enhanced. Do we know for a fact that Jesus was in the olive press or the Gat Sheminim? No we do not. But, these discoveries perhaps are given to us to intensify our understanding of His word and the picture of the gat sheminim can simply be used to help us understand the scope of Jesus' stress and anxiety that horrible night.
Tuhan Yesus memberkati. Doa: Tuhan Yesus, Engkaulah andalanku dalam setiap pergumulan hidupku. Jangan biarkan aku goyah, tapi tetaplah ada untukku. Amin. (Dod).
The Sanctity of Life and the Sacred Role of Motherhood and Song ‘Chain Breaker' ACU Sunday Series. The Sanctity of Life and the Sacred Role of Motherhood In this heartfelt and respectful conference address, the Elder James E. Faust addresses the profound topic of the sanctity of life, advocating for the unborn and emphasizing the sacred responsibilities and unparalleled blessings of motherhood. Drawing on religious teachings and historical perspectives, the talk underscores the moral and ethical considerations surrounding the preservation of life, the responsibilities of procreation, and the evils of abortion. It calls for a reverence for the divine partnership with God in creating life, the incomparable value of each human life, and the adherence to chastity within the bounds of marriage. The conference address is deeply rooted in religious doctrine and highlights the necessity of respecting and protecting the most precious creation—human life. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chadcrouch.substack.comWapato Park is pretty great, partially because it's easily overlooked and therefore never crowded. Its full name is Wapato Access Greenway State Park. It's a sleeper park, the kind you stumble on if you like studying maps. The small gravel parking lot trailhead is on a dead end road, and easy to miss. Interestingly, it's the only trailhead on Sauvie Island that you don't have to pay $10 ($30/yr) to park at. In the winter the trail can be quite muddy, in the late spring and summer it can get buggy, and if you're really unlucky, your car can get busted into. Still, it's worth a visit. On a mild February day earlier this year I strolled around its shores, and down to the dock on the river. This soundscape records the wildlife and ambience of winter. You'll hear Common Raven, spirited and unusual vocalizations from Stellar's Jays, a Pileated Woodpecker, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, and all kinds of water birds. Sometimes you even see Tundra Swans in small numbers here.Reminiscences of Louis Labonte (1900) recalls life on Scappoose Creek near Sauvie's Island, as a teenage boy, from about 1833 to 1836. Labonte [Jr.] was the son of Astor expedition member Louis Labonte [Sr.] and his native wife, daughter of Clatsop Chief Coboway.Game on the ponds of the island was very abundant, consisting of deer, bear, and panthers and wildcats; and beaver were still plentiful; but the waterfowl of the most magnificent kind, at their season of passage, and, indeed much of the year, almost forbade the hunter to sleep.Indeed, the lake was so covered by the flock as almost to conceal the water. So we can forgive Capt. William Clark for his 1805 journal remark referring to the swans, geese and cranes: “they were emensely numerous and their noise horrid.” Here we have another recollection of wildlife din riotous enough to make sleeping difficult. And, here I am thinking about this place prior to Euro-American settlement again, prior to industrialization and the inescapable anthropogenic noise coming from the commercial aircraft corridor above, the highway to the west, and the motorboats in the channel. Now, you might be thinking to yourself, boy Chad sure brings up indigenous people a lot, for being a field recording and music guy. It's true. I think it's because I get so tuned into natural soundscape, that I'm curious to imagine all the details of what life was like two hundred-plus years ago. When I'm editing my field recordings with splices and EQ filters and cut & paste techniques to approximate a pre-industrial quietude, I can't help but think people used to be much more in tune with wildlife and weather. In the vicinity of Wapato Park, human history goes deeper than is often discussed. According to amateur archeologist Emory Strong, there are three archeological points of interest nearby:MU 6. Cath-la-nah-qui-ah. six houses and 400 inhabitants. Nathaniel Wyeth built Fort William near this town but the residents had all died in the pestilence by then. Dr. Mclaughlin had all the houses burned. Excavations reveal everything covered with a film of cedar charcoal.MU 7. The site of Wyeth's Fort WilliamMU 8. One of the prehistoric sites that appears to be very old. There are no game or fish bones, and the midden has a different character from the more recent sites. (Stone Age on the Columbia River, 1958)[“MU” here is just an archeological prefix indicating Multnomah County. The modern trinomial standard now includes a code for Oregon as a prefix: 35 MU 6 and so on.] Each is an interesting story. Let's discuss. (35 MU 6) Cath-la-nah-qui-ah (or Gat-la-na-koa-iq), was a Multnomah tribe village on Multnomah Channel. The size estimate of 400 inhabitants belongs to Lewis and Clark. This would have been about half the size of the main Multnomah village on the other side of the island, in that time period. This is what that milieu looked like on the day I visited. This is what the plank houses looked like 200 years ago. They varied in size from 15' x 30' all the way up to 30' x 400':This is what the inside of a plankhouse looked like:Today, if not obliterated by erosion, or dike building, one would only expect to see slight depression in the soil on the site where one of these plankhouses stood. In the early 1800's there were hundreds of them on the lower Columbia. The pestilence of the 1830's is now widely regarded to have been a malaria epidemic. Sauvie Island tribes—perhaps owing to the marshy landscape— were particularly devastated. The Indians believed it had been introduced by an American ship involved in the salmon trade, the Owyhee, commanded by John Dominis. They may have been right, as the ship had visited malarial ports before sailing to the Columbia. The impact of fever and ague on Native people in Oregon was earthshaking. In the 1820s, they had been by far the majority population in the region; by the early 1840s, they were in the minority. (Disease Epidemics among Indians, 1770s-1850s)Dr. McLoughlin was the Chief Factor of Fort Vancouver, upriver about 10 miles. This was the center of operations and trade for the entire Pacific Northwest, on behalf of French-Canadian Hudson's Bay Co (HBC). In addition to the to the Cath-la-nah-qui-ah village, HBC men also burned the larger Multnomah village (35 MU 2, 800 inhabitants, originally much larger) on the east side of the island, presumably in an effort to curb the epidemic. In an 1895 article for The Oregonian, pioneer John Minto reminisced about the “old Multnomah nation” and its appearance fifty years before, in 1845. We landed and camped for the night at the site of the last Multnomah village, but at which that time there were no Indians nor sign of recent Indian life. There was however an extensive city of the dead, a cemetery laid out in streets as wide as the plat of Riverview Cemetery at Portland. The dead were deposited on structures of wide split cedar boards three or more inches thick, set upright; sometimes three tiers of horizontal boards one above the other, mortised into and secured by twisted inner bark of cedar. On these the dead were laid wrapped in cedar bark. He included this remark about what he heard:It was rare that a traveller should pass a village at night without hearing at the same time the women wailing for the dead and the monotonous beat of a tom-tom. Now, I know that maybe this all seems like a tangent. But, these are testimonials both to the look and sound of that time that I think is not just interesting, but worth sharing, particularly on public lands where these events happened. And for my part, why not include them with narratives about my soundscape recordings also bearing witness to the land?Just 8 years after Minto's observations of the Multnomah village site, in 1853, Simon Morgan Reeder settled the donation land claim (originally belonging to one N. D. Miller) on which once stood the largest village of the island. Today the main road on the east side of the island, Reeder Road, bears his name. Now let us turn to (35 MU 7) Fort William, the abandoned effort to set up a trading post on Sauvie Island by Nathaniel J. Wyeth, rivaling HBC, on behalf of American investors in 1834. Two roadside monuments have been erected nearby. Let's be clear: these are monuments to a failed business venture. Upon arrival, Wyeth saw opportunity in the Natives' misfortune, writing in his journals "providence has made room for me and with doing them [Natives] more injury than I should if I had made room for myself viz Killing them off."[3]Wyeth had many setbacks in his attempt to establish Fort William. In 1835 one of his men was killed at the hands of another. Reading a correspondence from his investors, one might surmise Wyatt was a poor communicator, if not lacking the temperament of a leader. Finally there is (35 MU 8) “a prehistoric site that appears to be very old. There are no game or fish bones…” Here we are to understand the bones decomposed in the intervening time span. These weren't the original vegans of the Portland basin. My best attempts to research this further yielded nothing. Were these the ancestors of the Multnomahs, the Chinookan peoples? The landscape holds a lot of mysteries. I think about them when I listen to it. Thank you for reading and listening. I hope you enjoy Wapato Park Soundwalk. Wapato Park Soundwalk is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) tomorrow, Friday, October 18th.

4 Doch gerade […]
DEVOCIÓN MATUTINA VESPERTINA“SALMOS”Narrado por: Joyce VejarDesde: Arizona, USAUna cortesía de DR'Ministries y Canaan Seventh-Day Adventist Church29 DE JULIO SALMO 57:6-11 «Firme está, oh Dios, mi corazón; firme está mi corazón. Voy a cantarte salmos» (SAL. 57:7).

S5-E11, Ever found yourself chuckling at a wedding proposal gone hilariously awry or swapping tales of sticky brewery floors with fellow ale aficionados? Well, you're in for a treat! My mates and I kick back with a couple of choice Irish brews — Solomon's Brewing Company's Irish Gold Ale and Rising River's My Red Heads Ale — and let the laughs flow as freely as the beer. From taste-testing these hoppy delights to sharing a serendipitous moment of generosity with a fellow beer lover, this episode is as much about the joy of good company as it is about the complexities of a fine pint. Now, picture a birthday party that's so stealthily planned, the birthday girl herself nearly misses the signs — that's the kind of shindig we're talking about here. Gat's big day was a surprise of epic proportions, with root beer soup gags, DJ-worthy tunes, and speeches that hit every emotional note. And if pet-owner pandemonium strikes a chord, you'll sympathize with my pre-work doggy debacle. Imagine trying to leave for work only to find a mess that proves life's little surprises aren't always pleasant.Wrapping up, we switch gears from party tales to platefuls, sharing how our culinary adventures with air fryers and instant pots have been game-changers. But let's not forget the brews — our palates dissect the nuances of an Irish red ale that leaves us thoroughly impressed. We also entertain some wildly random topics, from the cost of daily showers to the anatomy of gorillas, proving once again that life is as rich and varied as the beers we love to sip. So come along, grab your favorite mug, and join in on a chat that's as enlightening as it is entertaining. Cheers!Support the showwww.anotherreasontodrink.com
