How did Tokyo—Japan's capital, global city, tourist hotspot and financial center—get to where it is today? Tokyo–or then, Edo–had a rather unglamorous start, as a backwater on Japan's eastern coast before Tokugawa decided to make it his de facto capital. Eiko Maruko Siniawer picks ten distinct moments in Edo's, and then Tokyo's, history to show how this village became one of the world's most important cities. Moments like a brief crackdown on kabuki theater, or the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics make up the chapters of what's appropriately titled Ten Moments That Shaped Tokyo (Cambridge University Press: 2025) Eiko is the Charles R. She has also published articles in leading academic journals, such as “‘Affluence of the Heart': Wastefulness and the Search for Meaning in Millennial Japan” in the Journal of Asian Studies, and “‘Toilet Paper Panic': Uncertainty and Insecurity in Early 1970s Japan” in the American Historical Review.

Send us a textEpisode 225 of the Hey You Guys Podcast is here, and this week, Liam and Rob look back at 1991's underrated martial arts classic, Showdown in Little Tokyo. Possibly the most 80s movie to be released in the 90s, whether it be Brandon Lee's scene stealing performance, Dolph Lundgren's almost alarming love of all things Japan (except Yakuza, of course), or the movie's fantastically brief 79 minute runtime, this wonderful throwback deserves to be revisited by anyone with a love for 80s-style cinema. See what we made of it via the link in the bio.

The one where Green Blooded Bastard watches Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League. This movie did ninja and yakuza shit shit too, I guess! haha
This week- films about people escaping prisons of both the emotional and physical varieties. Herb McGwyer arrives at a remote island off the coast of Wales for a lucrative gig for a small group of fans. When he arrives he finds a stage that is just a pallet on the beach and the group consists solely of widowed superfan Charles Heath. Soon Herb will learn that isn't the only surprise Charles has planned... he's forcing a surprise reunion show with Herb's former partner, Nell Mortimer. Will the concert proceed as planned? What is Charles motivation for this scheme? Who will hear The Ballad of Wallis Island? Nami Matsushima is set up for a brutal assault by her police detective boyfriend, Sugimi, to get a Yakuza payout. After failing to get revenge, Nami is sent to a prison run by sadistic and lecherous guards. After a failed escape attempt, Sugimi and his yakuza connections plot to use the inmates to eliminate Nami. Will Matsu get her revenge? Can the tenuous hold of the guards keep the simmering tensions from boiling into a full riot? An expressionist exploitation that ranks among the best women-in-prison films, Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion. All that and Tyler makes Dave feel old, Kevin embraces cottagecore, and Craig gets the warm fuzzies. Join us, won't you? Episode 424- Ballad of Vengeance

This week brings MORE Superman chit-chat now that our resident comic-book expert has seen the film! Brad talks about Promise Mascot Agency which feels like a bizarre mini-game ripped straight out of Yakuza. Of course, we also dig into Donkey Kong Bananza; The Nintendo Switch 2's first "killer app!" Nick also delivers early impressions of Luto which feels like a bizarre cross between PT and The Stanley Parable. There's loads to talk about but for some reason, Chris Davis didn't bring us footage of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4! WTF? So why has Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii fallen out of the conversation, even among series diehards? Did the heat check connect, or is it the beginning of a downturn? All that and more in this great conversation. Nathan, AKA KUBARK Stare, @postcyborg on Twitter, an organizer of a film club in London which listeners should check out, joins me for a conversation about noided proletarian filmmaker Imamura Shōhei's 1968 film Profound Desire of the Gods. Former Ozu disciple Imamura rejected the neat and clean nationalist family values of his early mentor to explore the deepest and most powerful forces slumbering fitfully at the bottom of fourth-reich Japanese society. Here he goes back to the “dawn of everything” (as he conceives of such things) to take up some prime paleo-parapolitical material—outcast shamans, tribal secret societies, masked death squads—so you know we have to check it out. "Hommikumaa vägevate" IX hooaja keskmes on saladused; salaseltsid, salamõrvarid ja salaagendid. Neljas saade kõneleb Jaapani maffia ehk yakuza tekkimisest ja ajaloost, ülesehitusest ja tegevusest. Ning loomulikult kõige kuulsamatest maffiapealikest.
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Everyone's back in the house once again this week and we've all been doing plenty of gaming lately, so let's get rolling! Kevin gets things started off with a little Lonely Mountains: Downhill action, and is having a much smoother experience on Nintendo's new console. After that, Randall digs into his resolution game for this year, after getting some quality time in with Yakuza 0, which he's also playing on his Switch 2. John picks things up from there, and has a wonderful time poking around & making music in the adorable ODDADA. And finally, Kevin closes things out with Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines — the sequel to one of his favorite indie platformers in recent memory. Johnny, Johnny. Angry Johnny? Maybe not angry but goal oriented. Johnny (Keanu Reeves) has some crucial data stored all up inside his head, and he's got to get it delivered or the Yakuza or synaptic seepage is going to kill him. Who hasn't risked massive seepage in a dystopian future? The kicker is that Johnny is someone only concerned with himself, and now his dome contains the cure to save all of humanity. Spider (Henry Rollins) is helping in the good fight. Jane (Dina Meyer) is beating baddies down when she doesn't have the shakes. An assassin preacher (Dolph Lundgren) looks like He-Man (again). J-Bone (Ice-T) is here! DAMNNN! RTS gets some sweet tech upgrades to their future bods courtesy of Takahashi (Takeshi Kitano). La-Mar and Collin check out the club with Ralfi (Udo Kier). They were never seen again. The world is not ready for Internet-2021!

The history of the Yakuza is one clouded in a little mystery. You have the story the Yakuza promotes, that they were the collection of peoples who banded together to defend the helpless from the terrors of the Shogun and his Samurai. Then there's the more likely version, they were a group of merchants, hustlers, thieves, and racketeers who adopted a code of honor and started to branch out into more lucrative ventures, both legal and illegal. They adopted a family structure with all power held by the Oyabun, the boss, and everyone else at varying levels depending on how long they've been in the life. The Yakuza have had their hands much deeper into business and politics than the Italian Mob and even stole their style to boot. The rituals, the tattoos, the missing fingers, we'll cover it all and then some. Support the show

On today's show we talk all about the Nintendo Switch 2 and what we have thought about the first few weeks of enjoyment. This episode is a double show where the first episode is about our feelings about a week after release and we focus primarily on the device and Mario Kart World. The second part of the show we talk more about Yakuza 0 as well as Fantasy Life I and other Switch 2 releases and how we feel a few weeks after release. Of course we also talk about the PlayStation State of Play and the Xbox Showcase. All of that and a ton more on VGP!!!
This week: we take a look at the genre of the yakuza movie, or ninkyo eiga, which started off as a branch of the samurai film genre before becoming very much its own thing--and, for a decade or so in the 1960s and 1970s, dominating the Japanese box office. Show notes here.
