You know those really cool, helpful, insightful, meaningful, intelligent and chill people you meet who make you realize just how… inept you are? Yeah, that’s Hank for us. Kidding. About the inept part. Kind of. Long story short, we had the best time chatting with Hank about all things fuzzy, business, finance and creative. You’re going to want to grab a notepad, pen, sweatpants AND cocktail for this one, friends. Oh, and don’t worry, this episode still has its fair share of HORRIFIC client experiences, too. Because what would a Per Our Last Email episode be without one? We also mentioned pie a lot. Send your stories, questions and thoughts to perourlastemail.com. We promise to read through them as cryptically (and judgmentally) as we’re asked. Meet Hank Washington, the owner of Hank Design Studios. His studio’s mission is to help brands turn strangers into friends, and Hank does this through the design and illustration. I was glad to catch up with him recently, not too long after his move to Atlanta. We spoke about weathering the pandemic, and Hank shared how the first few months of business has went for his studio. He also talked about growing up in a small Southern town and being exposed to design as a kid, moving to Alabama to consider pursuing his dream, and gave some great advice for any designers out there looking to hone their unique style.Hank’s illustration style is a good indicator of what kind of designer he is — creative, playful, and willing to think outside the box. And now that he’s struck out on his own, there’s no telling where his skills will take him! This week I had the opportunity to sit down with illustrator and art director Hank Washington. Hank is not only a designer, illustrator, and art director but also gives talks at design conferences like Creative South and Canceled Con. In our conversation, Hank and I talked about his introduction into design, how he formed his style as a designer, and how to find your voice as a designer. Hank has also had the chance to work heavily in social media and we had some great conversations about how useful and dangerous social media can be as well. He had some awesome insights into how you can be on social media but make sure you protect yourself from comparing yourself to others or creating for an algorithm.
