What is joy vs happiness. Are they the same? Many podcasts say Joy is what you want. What gives you the warm fuzzies in life? Have you heard of 75 Hard? Let's talk about that too. Enjoy.
Send us a message! Really! On a special Election Day edition of the Get More Smarter Podcast, we've got nothing but nice, warm fuzzies for 25 minutes. We know you're probably freaking out a little bit about Colorado races and the big battle for President of the United States, so we're here to bring some calm(ala) energy and tell you why we both think things are looking good. NOTE: If you are rooting for Donald Trump, then this episode will likely not improve your mood.
Have you ever considered why the Bible asks us to fear the Lord? Scripture helps us understand who God really is. He is a God who saves and defeats His enemies. He is compassionate and yet also a consuming fire. He is a holy, perfect, and just God. He is the one we sin against, and because of His greatness, our well-deserved punishment is severe. Yet our infinite, loving God offers us grace through the blood of Jesus: an infinite gift we could never repay. For more information, visit lakepointe.church/dailydrive
Today, on Political Contessa, Jennifer dives deep into Election 2024, dissecting the bullshit from policies, or lack thereof, reminding people that facts don't care about your feelings and that what America needs in a leader is strong policies. Known for her candid and unfiltered opinions, Jennifer addresses the influence of celebrity endorsements, Kamala Harris's policy stance, and the Trump administration's dealings with Jewish voters and Israel. This episode promises to deliver a thought-provoking and no-holds-barred discussion on the issues that matter most to the American electorate. Jennifer shares her perspective on Kamala Harris's recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, highlighting the disconnect between celebrities and the everyday American voter. She criticizes the Democratic reliance on emotional appeals and stresses the importance of concrete policies. Jennifer also expresses her concerns about Kamala Harris's inconsistent stance on gun control and her controversial comments about Israel. She urges listeners to critically evaluate political candidates based not on charisma or identity but on their ability to improve the lives of American families. “Think about the things facing you and your family today, two years from now, four years from now.” ~Jennifer Nassour This week on Political Contessa: How celebrity endorsements influence the political landscape Kamala Harris's appearance on Oprah Winfrey The economic concerns of everyday Americans Kamala Harris's stance on gun control and defunding the police The Trump administration's comments on Jewish voters Kamala Harris's relationship with Israel and Jewish leaders The importance of policy over emotional appeal in politics The significance of staying informed and critically evaluating news sources Connect with Jennifer: PocketbookProject.org Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Political Contessa. Dan and Paul discuss the presence of drugs and alcohol in D&D and other tabletop roleplaying games. They'll touch on how state alterning substandces are represented in the fiction, rules for handling characters under the influence, and even what happens when the players themselves partake! According to addiction researcher Martin A. Plant, some people go through a period of self-redefinition before initiating recreational drug use. They tend to view using drugs as part of a general lifestyle that involves belonging to a subculture that they associate with heightened status and the challenging of social norms. Plant states: "From the user's point of view there are many positive reasons to become part of the milieu of drug taking. The reasons for drug use appear to have as much to do with needs for friendship, pleasure and status as they do with unhappiness or poverty. Becoming a drug taker, to many people, is a positive affirmation rather than a negative experience". The prevalence of recreational drugs in human societies is widely reflected in fiction, entertainment, and the arts, subject to prevailing laws and social conventions. In video games, for example, drugs are portrayed in a variety of ways: including power-ups (cocaine gum replenishes stamina in Red Dead Redemption 2), obstacles to be avoided (such as the Fuzzies in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island that distort the player's view when accidentally consumed), items to be bought and sold for in-game currency (coke dealing is a big part of Scarface: The World Is Yours). In the Fallout video game franchise, drugs ("chems" in the game) can fill the role of any above mentioned. Drug trafficking, gang rivalries, and their related criminal underworld also play a big part in the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise. College Football Week 10 lived up to the hype! In this college football podcast episode, Ty and Dan gather round the reaction campfire and let out their emotions as Texas edged Kansas State in overtime, Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma in the last ever Bedlam (at least for now), Washington outlasted USC in an epic shootout and Alabama ran past LSU thanks to a banner effort from Jalen Milroe. Also, a quick look at the scary stories from College Football Week 10, as Ohio State looked subpar on the road against Rutgers, the turf at the Coliseum looked like painted dirt and Iowa and Northwestern made a mockery of offense. This episode marks the beginning of what Jec and I believe will be intermittent commentary on a troubling trend we are seeing in the horse world. Led by certain entities - and by entities, we mean individuals, teams, and the programs and platforms they generate - there's an increasing focus on what we'll call for shorthand the warm and fuzzies. Let's define the warm and fuzzies here as strategies, practices, ideas, methods, marketing, and proclamations that may indeed serve the human and her need to feel connected and in a relationship, but, in fact, don't serve the horse one bit. Or, even worse, they confuse or neglect the horse. The target audience for the warm and fuzzies is the recreational woman rider. We sometimes see this audience sucked into the belief that they are making real connection and real progress with their horses. The reality looks a whole lot different. The horse is left in the dark and the so-called journey is nefarious at best. The result is a whole lot of sanctimonious feel-good sessions among this population of warm and fuzzy followers. How is the horse helped and what's getting accomplished? We are not sure. We'll be talking about this development in On the Fence segments as well as Coaches' Corner episodes with guest trainers. If we are striving make horses' lives worthwhile and productive, we feel it's incumbent on us to call out bad practices – even and really, especially, if they make us humans feel good. Who better to kick off the conversation than our own WiseAssWallace. WiseAssWallace is a long-time, beloved guest columnist for Cayuse Communications. From his pasture in southwestern Colorado, he's on a quest to improve horse-human connections and make lives better for his fellow equines. WiseAssWallace has a series of videos and articles. In this episode, we're featuring five short pasture monologues as WiseAss holds forth on the concept of feel, on gear, and naughty habits humans develop. We're running them one after another, in short order. You can read and watch all five here or if you're so inclined, just circle back and listen to Wallace again here. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Binding Fuzzies and Utilons Together, published by eleni on December 4, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." Attributed to Joseph Stalin. (Epistemic status: speculative) In this post, we argue that producing more emotionally appealing materials related to EA cause areas could yield some beneficial results. We present some possible research designs to assess the empirical validity of our claims, and call for EAs with a background in psychology to lead this research project. Introduction In Purchase Fuzzies and Utilons Separately, Yudkowsky argues that, if we want maximize our impact, we should be explicit about which of our "good deeds" we do with the intention of really helping the world to become a better place, and which are done in order for us to feel good about ourselves. By clearly separating these two types of actions, the argument goes, we could have both a larger positive impact on the world and get to feel even better about ourselves. We think that this is very valuable advice at the individual level. However, when considering the strategic approach the EA movement as a whole should have, we believe that merging warm fuzzies and utilons together, to some extent, might possibly be a good idea. Some ideas in the Effective Altruism movement are a deliberate attempt to correct a market failure in the "market" of doing good. Some cause areas and interventions, due to a wide range of psychological biases, are less emotionally appealing than others, which means that, when left unchecked, they would receive less resources than what would be optimal, and the opposite holds for the more emotionally appealing causes. The approach EA usually seems to take is to acknowledge this phenomenon ("neglectedness" in the ITN framework) and try to reallocate resources to where they would be the most efficient, without directly taking into account the emotional appeal of the cause. In this post, we argue that a further step in correcting this failure could be to explicitly targeting emotional appeal when designing the marketing of these neglected cause areas, in a way that would attenuate, in part, the very characteristics that make the cause neglected on the first place. We hypothesize that while trying to focus explicitly on improving the emotional appeal of EA cause areas could make the movement easier to promote to non-EAs, a significant part of the benefits of this strategy could come from the effect of increased engagement of those who are already EAs. If this hypothesis is valid, increasing the emotional appeal of marketing materials in EA organizations could prove to be a cost-effective intervention. In this post, we will develop this general idea in more detail. We will specify what kinds of interventions would fit what we have in mind, and we will present some potential upsides that these interventions might have. We have a simple idea in mind that should be empirically verified before being put into practice, and so we also tentatively present some research ideas that EAs with the necessary skills could pursue. We will also present some objections to our ideas and points of uncertainty as an important factor for our belief on the importance on further research. Finally, neither of us have a background in psychology, so take what is written here with a grain of salt. Binding Fuzzies and Utilons The hypothesis to be presented in this article is the following: explicitly focusing on increasing the emotional appeal in the marketing of EA organizations could prove to be a powerful tool to help move more resources towards these areas. As we will discuss in the next section, these could be both monetary and human resources, and we believe this effect could hold both for non-EAs and for EAs. A striking anecdotal ...
I wish I got along with everyone and, for the most part, I do. I have great relationships with family, clients, and neighbors. But there are those few who, like ‘flies in the ointment,' ruin my otherwise flawless compatibility record. These detractors prove I do not qualify for the “World's Most Congenial Guy” award. Oddly many of them, like me, are professing believers and active church goers. I don't get it. When I am around these people I receive no ‘warm fuzzies,' only ‘cold pricklies.' Why won't Jesus wipe away all differences and help us achieve the unity between believers He promised and commanded? Am I doing something wrong, or are they the bad guys? Or, is there an explanation that, for the moment, eludes me? Only one thing consistently gives me the warm fuzzy feeling; and that is “the original message” of the gospel of Jesus Christ. When I “let it sink into my life” I feel better, more confident of His calling and love. When I press into Jesus and the truths of the Bible, I experience the personal benefits of living “deeply in both the Son and the Father.” To “live deeply in what I was taught” when I first met the Lord over fifty years ago brings an inner joy and peace that cannot be shaken, (1st John 2.24, 27d “The Message”). Living deeply for Christ is the only response that makes sense of the cold prickly people I know.
Light a fire, wrap a quilt around your shoulders, and hold that mug with two hands - this episode yr grls get in their comfies with THE CRAFT OF LOVE BY E.E. OTTOMAN. Benjamin is a silversmith in need of a quilt. Remembrance is a quilter in need of a tea service. Can I make it any more obvious (in the style of Avril Lavigne). Also, Benjamin is trans and Remembrance's ex is a woman and it is 1830. What makes a work of fiction cozy? How can authors talk about marginalized identities and the working class in historical romance without talking down about them? Why does romance produce more angst than cozies?

There's like, one dumb bug that's probably already been fixed. I often hear many of these points in discussions, but I wonder how many people know and consider them, so I wanted to share my pros and cons. This presentation will help convince you that libraries are not EVIL like so many haters believe. Choosing the right libraries will make you more productive and efficient, not lazy. We'll look at how to identify solid use-cases for using a 3rd party library in your application. It gives you a checklist of questions to help you identify the red flags of unsafe, unreliable, poorly supported, or ill-suited libraries. We'll even look at some examples in the CFML Landscape.https://www.meetup.com/coldfusionmeetup/events/286262739/ ICYMI - Ortus Webinar - May - Clearing the Fuzzies on Fuzzy Search with Michael BornMay 27th 2022: Time 11:00 AM Central Time ( US and Canada )Take a walk through the world of search in this webinar which will show why your database search is not smart enough, explain the basics of how fuzzy search works, and show how to use CBElasticsearch to bring the power of fuzzy searching to your CF application.https://cfcasts.com/series/ortus-webinars-2022/videos/michael-born-clearing-the-fuzzies-on-fuzzy-search View all Webinars: https://www.ortussolutions.com/events/webinars Ortus Webinar - June - Getting started with the Legacy Migration with Dan CardJune 24th 2022: Time 11:00 AM Central Time ( US and Canada )We will look at the process of converting legacy .cfm based sites into a more modern coding design which has less overall code, is easier to maintain and manage, mistakes and errors can more readily and speedily identified and fixed, and is easier to read.Registration Link: Coming SoonView all Webinars: https://www.ortussolutions.com/events/webinars June 2022 Seattle ColdFusion User Group MeetingWe are restarting our Seattle ColdFusion User Group meetings and are looking forward to meeting online with all of you. This month's meeting includes a presentation by Leon O'Daniel on sending SMS messages using ColdFusion and the Twilio API.https://www.meetup.com/Seattle-ColdFusion-User-Group/events/285974950/ Adobe WorkshopsJoin the Adobe ColdFusion Workshop to learn how you and your agency can leverage ColdFusion to create amazing web content. I had never heard of Liquid Tags before. Apparently, it's a syntax that some platforms use to enable dynamic content. One subset of this syntax allows users to embed external content within their own content. This piqued my curiosity since something like this might give me a way to allow readers of this blog to embed fun things within the comments. As such, I wanted to experiment with parsing and processing Liquid Tags in Lucee CFML 5.3.8.201.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4272-parsing-liquid-tag-embeds-with-jsoup-and-lucee-cfml-5-3-8-201.htm 5/25/22 Blog - Adam Cameron - A super-quick Observer Pattern implementation in CFML, and I skip TDD. Or do I?There's a possible "Betteridge's law of headlines" situation there. I'm not actually sure yet.A few days back I was chatting to someone about application-scope-usage, and how to trigger an event when any changes to the application scope took place. I mentioned that the application scope should never be accessed directly in one's application code, and it should be wrapped up in an adapter. And it's easy for one's adapter to trigger events if needs must. An implementation of the Observer Pattern would do the trick here. Then it occurred to me that I have never actually implemented the Observer Pattern, and I thought I might give it a go.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/a-super-quick-observer-pattern.html 5/30/22 Blog - Adam Cameron - CFML: Implementing an ObservableScopeAdapter using the Adapter Pattern, Decorator Pattern and Observer PatternIn my last article (A super-quick Observer Pattern implementation in CFML, and I skip TDD. And, now that I'm done (crushing it), I need a little breather. As a fun code kata, I thought I might play around with calculating array interactions, unions, and differences in Lucee CFML 5.3.8.201. I've had 2 long demos of it this week, with one more left. It looks really, really good. I'm using the latest build for all my demos, and its like... right there. There's like, one dumb bug that's probably already been fixed. Look for at least one deep dive engineering talk about VS Code during Developer Week (and I'm pushing for 2 talks because, frankly, an hour isn't enough time to cover everything this tool does). Myself, Nolan and Dave F + the CF engineering team, Elishia and Kishore all spent a week together building the new one and it is HARD. I highly recommend it as a test of your skills, I guarantee everyone will learn something new.... Yes, but there's also over 100 hours of video to go over before the 1 day lecture + cert. So you watch videos, sit in class, then take the exam there. It is no joke, definitely challenging, but super satisfying to pass.Plus you get access to those videos for a year, which is nice for going back and reviewing things down the line.- So this is not the same certification as the specialist, the professional seems like a big step up.VueJS Forge June 29-30thOrganized by Vue School_The largest hands-on Vue.js EventTeam up with 1000s of fellow Vue.js devs from around the globe to build a real-world application in just 2 days in this FREE hackathon-style event.Make connections. I tend use a lot of SVG images when generating PDFs using WKHTMLTOPDF with ColdFusion 2016-2021 and Lucee. I thought I'd try writing a cross-compatible UDF to parse this information. I've added support for desc, title and id metadata. The dimensions will be pulled from svg.viewBox (if exists) rather than width and height tags as I noticed that these dimensions seemed to be used more often with some generators. (NOTE: While the "S" in SVG means that images "scaleable", the dimensions are still extremely beneficial when embedding so you can explicitly code the dimensions using the correct aspect ratio.)https://dev.to/gamesover/parsing-widthheight-from-svg-file-using-coldfusion-ljo 5/21/22 - Tweet - James Moberg - isValid doesnt support IPv4 but 20 year old UDF doesI'm validating an IPv4 value & just realized that #ColdFusion isValid() doesn't support it. (I know type="regex" can be passed, but I'm just surprised that it's 2022 and it's not already built-in.)NOTE: This #cfml UDF from ~20 years ago supports IPv4.https://cflib.org/udf/CheckPattern https://twitter.com/gamesover/status/1527782375580647430 https://twitter.com/gamesover 5/20/22 - Podcast - CFAlive - Are your Database Relationships in a Rut? with Dave Ferguson Dave Ferguson talks about "Are your Database Relationships in a Rut?" in this episode of the CF Alive Podcast, with host Michaela Light.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgklYsTkuk0 5/18/22 - Blog - Gavin Pickin - Why should I use 3rd party libraries vs Roll my own? There is always a trade-off between using a 3rd party library and rolling your version in software development. I often hear many of these points in discussions, but I wonder how many people know and consider them, so I wanted to share my pros and cons.TLDRThis article will help convince you that libraries are not EVIL like so many haters believe. Choosing the right libraries make you more productive and efficient, not lazy. This article identifies solid use-cases for using a 3rd party library in your application. The current technique for extracting initials from names is rather simplistic: we grab the set of tokens defined by the RegEx pattern, S+, and then pluck out the leading character of each match. As a code kata, I wanted to see if I could author a slightly more clever user defined function (UDF) that could take a name and return initials in Lucee CFML 5.3.8.201.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4265-code-kata-getting-initials-for-a-name-in-lucee-cfml-5-3-8-201.htm 5/19/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - SQL "Join Tables" Are Just "Entity Tables" With Hard-To-Name ConceptsOver the past few months, I've been incrementally modernizing the public-facing portion of this ColdFusion blog. And, all in all, it's been going quite smoothly! But, when I started to work on modernizing the administrative portion of the blog, things got a little hairy. Not only is the administrative code even older and jankier than the public code, it requires CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations on "join tables" in the MySQL database. And, up until now, I haven't had to think about modeling these join tables in a data access layer (DAL)https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4267-sql-join-tables-are-just-entity-tables-with-hard-to-name-concepts.htm 5/20/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Parsing Nullish Date "0001-01-01T00:00:00Z" In Lucee CFML 5.3.8.201At work, one of the APIs that I consume returns data for a Date column that didn't always exist. And, instead of returning a null or an empty string for rows in which the value in the database is NULL, they return what I assume is a null-coalesced date: 0001-01-01T00:00:00Z. I didn't realize that this was happening until I started to see dates in my system showing up as 2001 - which is many years before the API in question even existed. It turns out, passing a date/time mask into the parseDateTime() function is kind of important in Lucee CFML 5.3.8.201https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4268-parsing-nullish-date-0001-01-01t00-00-00z-in-lucee-cfml-5-3-8-201.htm 5/21/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Dynamically Enabling / Disabling Session Management In Lucee CFML 5.3.8.201Currently, my blog is composed of two completely separate ColdFusion applications: one for the public facing functionality (you) and one for the content publisher (me). The public facing ColdFusion application has no session management. But the internal facing ColdFusion application has sessions and login-based authentication. As I've been refactoring this platform, I briefly considered combining the two ColdFusion applications and just dynamically enabling sessions for my user. I dismissed this approach as unnecessarily complicated; but, the fact that it's even possible is a fascinating aspect of ColdFusion. As such, I thought that I might quickly demonstrate that you can dynamically enable and disable session management in Lucee CFML 5.3.8.201https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4269-dynamically-enabling-disabling-session-management-in-lucee-cfml-5-3-8-201.htm Adam Cameron Corner 5/17/22 - Blog - Adam Cameron - Why I'm doing this TinyTestFramework exerciseI have listened to both Modernize or Die® and Working Code Podcast (the specific episode of the latter is not public yet: I get it early as I'm a patreon… which you should be too: Patreon: Working Code is creating podcasts) this evening, and I appreciate them both mentioning my series on TinyTestFramework, but they both kinda got my motivations for doing it wrong.I'm not doing it for these reasons. I mean… I am doing it, yes, obviously. But these are not my motivations:To work out how to write a testing framework. This is not really that interesting to me. How to do it within a single expression (the whole thing is one struct literal)? Yes, interested in that. Def.Because I think TestBox is doing anything wrong. It could not be further from the truth: I think TestBox is one of the best CFML projects out there. I am using it as inspiration, as I want code written in TinyTestFramework to be lift-and-shift-able into TestBox.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/why-im-doing-this-tinytestframework.html 5/18/22 - Blog - Adam Cameron - CFML: Filler article with code but no TDD at allI'm still working on the TinyTestFramework though: some things don't change. My test file for this work, which is the framework and all its tests in one is getting a bit weighty: >1200 LOC, and I'm finding it difficult to navigate about the place. Especially as I'm using trycf.com as my dev environment :-).Using the technique I recently documented to execute code on trycf.com remotely ("Running CFML code on trycf.com via a remote HTTP request"), I've split-out the framework and the tests into different gists, and wrote a wee calling-harness to run them all… and for completeness on both ColdFusion 2021 and Lucee 5.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/cfml-filler-article-with-code-but-no.html CFML JobsSeveral positions available on https://www.getcfmljobs.com/Listing over 89 ColdFusion positions from 50 companies across 45 locations in 5 Countries.4 new jobs listedFull-Time - Senior Software Engineer - Coldfusion/C# at Plano, TX - United States Posted May 24https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-states/Senior-Software-engineer-coldfusion/11475 Full-Time - Software Engineer-ColdFusion at Reno, NV - United States Posted May 18https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-states/Software-EngineerColdFusion-at-Reno-NV/11471 Full-Time - Software Engineer-ColdFusion at Bloomington, MN - United States Posted May 18https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-states/Software-EngineerColdFusion-at-Bloomington-MN/11472 Full-Time - Software Engineer-ColdFusion at Roseville, CA - United States Posted May 18https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-states/Software-EngineerColdFusion-at-Roseville-CA/11476 PATREON SPONSORED JOB POSTING!Hagerty - MotorSportRegSenior Software Engineer, MotorsportWe are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work primarily with Node/Vue.js, ColdFusion, and AWS to improve our platform and build greenfield experiences. We are a 25-person team supporting 1,600 organizations with our SaaS CRM, commerce and event management platform. So, yeah - that's not great. And then there's a war going on 2 countries down the road, which adds at least some economic uncertainties and concerns about sanctions, people willing to travel and spend money on events etc. Then there is all of the general annoyances around international travel - the organizers are being very careful and "wanting to do everything to avoid international travel for anyone when running an event" side of things when it comes to Covid. So, a lot of energy would have to be spent on making the event safe enough from our own point of view… so best to wait until hopefully Summer 2023More conferencesNeed more conferences, this site has a huge list of conferences for almost any language/community.https://confs.tech/Blogs, Tweets, and Videos of the Week 5/17/22 - Blog - Into the Box - Announcing Speakers for Into the Box 2022 - Round 1We are excited to announce the first set of speakers and sessions. Whenever I have an issue with some CFML that needs to be demonstrated to someone else; eg: I'm asking for help on Slack or Stack Overflow, or demonstrating an answer to someone else's question: I create a portable / repeatable repro case on trycf.com. I use it to demonstrate bugs and behavioural differences to Adobe or Lucee when both vendors don't give the same result from the same code. I use it every day.I believe trycf.com is the handiest resource available to CFML developers.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/if-yer-cfml-dev-you-should-consider.html 5/16/22 - Blog - Peter Amiri - CFWheels - CFWheels Announces a Bug BountyWe are happy to launch a new program that we hope will lead to a more stable framework for all of us. I recently needed to alert a Slack channel whenever an application was deployed, and found that using Eric Peterson's module Hyper along with Slack's Incoming Webhooks did the trick nicely.I'll share how to do this with a FW/1 application - just know that with ColdBox it would be even easier, and the general approach could even be modified to work without a framework.https://blog.mattclemente.com/2022/05/12/cfml-slack-incoming-webhook-hyper/ 5/12/22 - Blog - Gavin Pickin - Ortus Solutions - Tips, Tricks and Tools to write DRYer more Reusable Code in ColdFusionIn the last blog post, we learned many reasons why we wanted DRYer more reusable code in ColdFusion. Another exercise in TDDI have to admit I'm not sure where I'm going with this one yet. I dunno how to implement what I'm needing to do, but I'm gonna start with a test and see where I go from there.Context: I've been messing around with this TinyTestFramework thing for a bit… it's intended to be a test framework one can run in trycf.com, so I need to squeeze it all into one include file, and at the same time make it not seem too rubbish in the coding dept. The current state of affairs is here: tinyTestFramework.cfm, and its tests: testTinyTestFramework.cfm. Runnable here: on trycf.comhttps://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/cfml-adding-beforeeach-handlers-to-my.html 5/12/22 - Blog - Adam Cameron - CFML: for the sake of completeness, here's the afterEach treatmentThis immediately follows on from "CFML: Adding beforeEach handlers to my TinyTestFramework. Another exercise in TDD".Having done the beforeEach implementation for my TinyTestFramework, I reckoned afterEach would be super easy: barely an inconvenience. And indeed it was. Took me about 15min, given most of the logic is the same as for beforeEach.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/cfml-for-sake-of-completeness-heres.html 5/13/22 - Blog - Adam Cameron - CFML: adding aroundEach to TinyTestFramework was way easier than I expectedI'm still pottering around with my TinyTestFramework. Last night I added beforeEach and afterEach handlers, but then thought about how the hell I could easily implement aroundEach support, and I could only see about 50% of it, so I decided to sleep on it.After a night's sleep I spent about 30min before work doing a quick spike (read: no tests, just "will this even work?"), and surprisingly it did work. First time. Well except for a coupla typos, but I nailed the logic first time. I'm sorta halfway chuffed by this, sorta halfway worried that even though what I decided would probably work - and it did - I haven't quite got my head around how it works, or even quite what it's doing. So let's blog about that.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/cfml-adding-aroundeach-to.html 5/15/22 - Blog - Adam Cameron - CFML: fixing a coupla bugs in my recent work on TinyTestFrameworkLast week I did some more work on my TinyTestFramework:CFML: for the sake of completeness, here's the afterEach treatmentCFML: adding aroundEach to TinyTestFramework was way easier than I expectedOn Saturday, I found a bug in each of those. Same bug, basically, surfacing in two different ways. So, a lot of energy would have to be spent on making the event safe enough from our own point of view… so best to wait until hopefully Summer 2023More conferencesNeed more conferences, this site has a huge list of conferences for almost any language/community.https://confs.tech/Blogs, Tweets, and Videos of the Week5/10/22 Tweet - Charlie Arehart - Shame on you, Adobe!Shame on you, Adobe! Following on my earlier post, I've learned these May 2022 #coldfusion updates DO NOT include any bug fixes--for things that have plagued us since the Sept 2021 updates. Worse, they remove special hotfixes if added. Now, it could be argued that any programming language that costs more than $0 is “expensive”, as generally languages are free to use. But, of course, Adobe ColdFusion isn't “just” a language. It is an entire ecosystem of functionality, including an incredibly useful administrator, performance monitoring toolkit and (if you use Enterprise), the API Manager. Many folks have covered the fantastic features of the API Manager, but what is talked about less is what someone might use instead of API Manager. I'm going to look at a few common 3rd party tools and compare the costs.https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2022/05/comparing-adobe-coldfusion-enterprise-api-manager-to-3rd-party-options/5/5/22 Blog - James Moberg - Identifying Random Uploaded Form FilesThe benefit to this approach is that it returns a single struct containing keys that match all form "file" field names with extra information identifying the original filename, type, size and temporary file path. Enjoy!https://dev.to/gamesover/identifying-random-uploaded-form-files-57n75/6/22 Blog - Brad Wood - Java regression and UndertowIn the most recent updates of Java 8 u333 and 11.0.15, there was a regression introduced that affects the XNIO libraries that power Undertow, which CommandBox uses. This issue appears to only affect Windows. If you are getting any of the error messages here, the TL; DR; is simply to update to CommandBox 5.5.1, where we have a workaround already in place.https://community.ortussolutions.com/t/java-regression-and-undertow/92285/6/22 Blog - Brad Wood - Lucee 5.3.9 losing sessions over SSLIf you've started using Lucee 5.3.9 for your CommandBox servers (which is the new default in CommandBox 5.5) and you have SSL enabled, you may have noticed your session scope getting lost in your application as well as the Lucee administrator.https://community.ortussolutions.com/t/lucee-5-3-9-losing-sessions-over-ssl/92295/6/22 Blog - Brad Wood - CommandBox 5.5 and injecting models into Task RunnersCommandBox 5.5 has a lot of new features, but there are just as many bug fixes and improvements. Sometimes these tickets unintentionally change some internal behavior you may have been depending on, but was never guaranteed. One such change that caught a couple people out was that the underlying “web root” that Lucee uses under the covers changed from the folder box.exe was started in to the root of your drive (C:/ or / in *nix). This was done for a handful of reasons, one of which being a super annoying Lucee bug where it's literally impossible to create a CF mapping that points to / on Linux.https://community.ortussolutions.com/t/commandbox-5-5-and-injecting-models-into-task-runners/9230https://xkcd.com/1172/CFML JobsSeveral positions available on https://www.getcfmljobs.com/Listing over 76 ColdFusion positions from 44 companies across 37 locations in 5 Countries.1 new job listedFull-Time - Senior Application Developer UK at Remote - United Kingdom - Work with Adam CameronMay 03https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-kingdom/Sr-AppDeveloper-RemoteUK/11463 PATREON SPONSORED JOB POSTING!Hagerty - MotorSportRegSenior Software Engineer, MotorsportWe are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work primarily with Node/Vue.js, ColdFusion, and AWS to improve our platform and build greenfield experiences. We are a 25-person team supporting 1,600 organizations with our SaaS CRM, commerce and event management platform. Once again we are growing our team, and the equivalent job has opened again (this is in addition to the successful hire we made after the January round, not "instead of ~" ;-).So if you're in the UK, and fancy leveraging your existing strong (strong) CFML skills to get into a position where we'll migrate your capabilities to Kotlin, this could be a good opportunity.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/work-with-me-here-revisited.html 5/3/22 Blog - Ben Nadel - Considering Approaches To Handling MySQL Key Conflicts In Lucee CFMLRelational databases are magical. And, as I've become more experienced as a software engineer, I've begun to lean more heavily on the database as a means to enforce data integrity (with UNIQUE KEY constraints) and to drive idempotent workflows. That said, I'm still trying to figure out where in the software stack it makes sense to put all the finer details. As such, I wanted to take a moment and consider my options for handling key conflicts in MySQL and Lucee CFML.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4259-considering-approaches-to-handling-mysql-key-conflicts-in-lucee-cfml.htm 5/3/22 - Blog - Peter Amiri - CFWheels - CFWheels 2.3.0-rc.1 ReleasedThis version has been cooking for a while and there have been many contributors. But since this is my first release a the helm with a new CI pipeline in place, I felt more comfortable doing a Release Candidate first.https://cfwheels.org/blog/cfwheels-2-3-0-rc-1/ 5/2/22 Blog - Adam Cameron - CFML: with Lucee, true isn't necessarily the same as trueYesterday I decided to improve my "Tiny Test Framework". I wrote an article about developing the first iterationof this as a TDD exercise six or so months ago: "TDD: writing a micro testing framework, using the framework to test itself as I build it". I use this framework on trycf.com, so I can include tests in my code samples. The first iteration of this only had the one toBe matcher, and yesterday I decided to add in toBeTrue, toBeFalse and toThrow: just to make my sample code on trycf a bit clearerhttps://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/cfml-with-lucee-true-isnt-necessarily.html 5/2/22 - Blog - Eric Peterson - Ortus Solutions - ColdBox Elixir v4 ReleasedHot off the presses, ColdBox Elixir v4 is now available on NPM. This is a massive upgrade under the hood, but it shouldn't require any API changes if you are using just Elixir methods. (If you are customizing Webpack directly, you may need to make additional changes.) Please check out the Migration Guide for help upgrading.https://www.ortussolutions.com/blog/coldbox-elixir-v4-released/ 5/2/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - For Consideration: An ArrayFrom() Function In ColdFusionIn my previous post, I took a look at the Array.sublist() method in ColdFusion; and, demonstrated that in order to use it safely you have to create a copy of the .sublist() result. This got me thinking about JavaScript and the Array.from() method. The Array.from() method allows you to create shallow copies of other arrays and Array-like values. Would it be worth having something like an arrayFrom() built-in function (BIF) in ColdFusion? https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4258-for-consideration-an-arrayfrom-function-in-coldfusion.htm 5/2/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Safely Using Array.sublist() To Generate Slices In Lucee CFMLThe other day, in the comments of my post on the performance overhead of arraySlice() in Lucee CFML, Brad Wood mentioned that it would be much faster to dip down into the Java layer and use ArrayList.sublist(). But then, in the comments of the Lucee Jira ticket, Pothys Ravichandran cautioned that .sublist() actually returns a wrapper to the original array, not a new array. As such, mutating the results of the .sublist() call would not be safe. That said, we can easily generate a new ColdFusion array from the .sublist() result in Lucee CFML to keep things running smoothly.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4257-safely-using-array-sublist-to-generate-slices-in-lucee-cfml.htm 5/1/22 - Tweet - Scott Steinbeck - CFDocs GoodiesSome goodies added to cfdocs.com #cfml #lucee #Opensource https://t.co/v5DYIuconu https://t.co/N0RFWu8O4R https://t.co/iy4aVkGFwnhttps://t.co/mrwULlbWoh https://twitter.com/uniquetrio2000/status/1520548007157985280 https://twitter.com/uniquetrio20004/29/22 - Blog - Peter Amiri - CFWheels - CFWheels Fully Embraces ForgeBox PackagesAs you may know, many years ago CFWheels embraced the distribution of Plugins via ForgeBox packages instead of maintaining our own directory. But the framework itself remains illusive. There was some work done in the last few months to put up packages for the framework but those packages were being maintained by hand which made them a show stopper for a long term solution.Well, thanks to a new CI workflow based on GitHub Actions we now have the building and publishing of the packages fully automated. Giving credit where credit is due, the new workflow borrows heavily from the ColdBox workflow. It used GitHub Actions, Ant, and CommandBox to automate the process.https://cfwheels.org/blog/cfwheels-fully-embraces-forgebox-packages/ 4/27/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - R.O.P.E. And Battling Post-Deployment DepressionYesterday morning, I enabled a feature-flag in production that quietly released a new feature to all of our InVision customers. This was the culmination of a week's worth of incremental builds and deployments. And while a week doesn't sound like a long time, every day leading up to it was exciting—every line of code that I wrote was exhilarating. And when it all finally went live, I was dropping party parrot and rocket ship emojis all over the place! But, when the dust settled, the post-deployment depression set in. As it always does.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4256-r-o-p-e-and-battling-post-deployment-depression.htm 4/27/22 - Blog - Gavin Pickin - Ortus Solutions - New Dates for Into the Box 2022 and Why we changed themOrtus Solutions is happy to announce we have new finalized dates for Into the Box 2022 and the venue. There are clears benefits and drawbacks to wearing a lot of hats. Knowing a little bit about a lot of things can cut down on communication overhead and enable teams to move faster. But, without specialization, solutions will almost certainly be sub-optimal; and, "best practices" may not even be known to the engineer. Ideally, a team should consistent of both generalists and subject-matter experts (SME). This kind of balance creates a "healthy tension" that tempers perfectionism with pragmatism and keeps everyone moving forward at the right pace...https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4255-working-code-podcast-episode-72-wearing-too-many-hats.htm CFML JobsSeveral positions available on https://www.getcfmljobs.com/Listing over 75 ColdFusion positions from 43 companies across 36 locations in 5 Countries.0 new jobs listed this weekOther Job Links Ortus Solutionshttps://www.ortussolutions.com/about-us/careers Consortium Inchttps://www.dice.com/jobs/detail/-/10183574/7322396 Senior Application Developer UK with Easy Direct Debitshttps://www.easydirectdebits.co.uk/job/senior-application-developer-uk/ You'll be working with Adam Cameron https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/05/work-with-me-here-revisited.html There is a jobs channel in the cfml slack team, and in the box team slack now too ForgeBox Module of the WeekCFWheels - EverythingCFWheels removed a couple of their old packages, changed things up and re-deployed all of their packages again.
