During this episode of the SIMM-podcast we focus on the role composers may play within participatory social and community music projects. You will during this episode hear 3 composers, who have different perspectives and ideas about the questions we ask them. They are practitioners within social music projects, as well as scholars developing research on this practice: Cathy Milliken from Australia (1:14->32:34), Michal Kawecki from Poland (32:37->51:28), and Fiona Evison from Canada (51:30->1:01). This is again a somewhat longer episode, of about an hour, but we think it makes sense to take the time to listen to the details Cathy, Michal and Fiona share with us about their practice and their research in this field.Cathy Milliken will be one of the facilitators of the 2nd SIMM research seminar on the role of composers in social and community music projects, organised from 9 to 11 May 2025 at the MusikFabrik in Cologne. Deadline for applications is 31st December 2024 (see call here).Referenced during this podcast-episode: Claire Bishop ('Participation'), Peter Brook, John Cage, Rebecca Cohen, Creative Minds in Song, Guildhall School, Mind Foundation UK, My Child Fell (Isobel Lane & Michal Kawecki), Gavin Roberts, Song in the City, Thomas Turino ('Music as Social Life - The Politics of Participation'),  The transcription of this episode can be found here.During this episode music is shortly heard from Steve Reich's 'Drumming' (played by the Ictus Ensemble), as well as rehearsal recordings of the Kinshasa based traditional drummers ensemble Beta Mbonda.Contact: info@simm-platform.eu

Healing Prolapse, Diastasis Recti, and Tearing with Rebecca Cohen Watch this episode HERE I've got Dr. Rebecca Cohen back on the show this week in celebration of our newest collaboration. One of the most common requests I've gotten from you all is to create a pelvic health course, that covers all the problems, so to speak, of the postpartum pelvis and pelvic floor, or bowl, as Rebecca calls it. Well, we did it, we've been working hard all fall behind the scenes to create the most info packed, helpful, comprehensive course on the postpartum pelvis. It's called, Your Postpartum Pelvis, and it is FOR YOU to have aid you in your healing, to keep you healing at home, outside of the medical system. This episode and our newest course YOUR POSTPARTUM PELVIS is crafted for you. Rebecca has now supported thousands of women over decades helping them come back into embodiment after childbirth, with the very wisdom within this course. You deserve to feel whole again, and I am just so proud to finally have this kind of resource on the free birth society platform. Go to freebirthsociety.com/yourpostpartumpelvis and start healing today. Here's what you'll hear: How Rebecca returned back to her medical residency, 4 weeks to the day after having her first baby, to work 100 plus hours per week. By Rebecca's third pregnancy, her cervix popped out, and she was told to just tuck it back in. At 36, her doctors recommended having a full hysterectomy, and 2 weeks before she was scheduled for surgery, she took the holistic pelvic care course that resulted in her canceling the surgery. Just because a woman gets sutures doesn't mean she needs them, and as an OBGYN, Rebecca was trained just to give them all the time, even if women didn't need them. How psychological tearing is okay and designed to heal an important part of the postpartum process. After learning about holistic pelvic care, Rebecca feels it's a delightful coming home and a continuing decision to honor ourselves and our bodies. How when people have prolapse, they feel broken and how they screwed up somehow. It's never too late to heal because Rebecca started this journey 10 years after having her first baby. And how you're capable of healing. Listen to Rebecca's first time on the podcast HERE Get Rebecca's new course and all our courses at HALF OFF with the code FBSHALFOFF at check out. After birth, our bodies are especially tender and rather "blown open."Not only has a babe passed through either your perineum or your belly, but your spirit has been expanded tremendously, too. And unfortunately, most of us have NO IDEA how to effectively tend "to the root of our bodies" as today's guest, MD-turned-holistic-midwife (and mother of 9!) Dr Rebecca Cohen describes it. We've all but lost the art of deep, replenishing convalescence that's so needed postpartum. Birth is a big experience, and whether it's physically, emotionally or spiritually - there's often a lot to integrate (on top of having a newborn babe)! So caring for the tender tissues and the tender spirit in this liminal time can be incredibly supportive. There are many ways to do so, from rest, to easy-to-digest foods, to herbal practices such as vaginal steams, to sitz baths, to teas, to hands-on and hands-in care. And today's episode goes into all of this and more. Listen in to learn:how Rebecca went from conventionally trained MD to herbalist and midwifewhat "the root of your body" means (on a couple different levels)some simple practices to tend that part of your body postpartumRebecca's favorite herbs for the postpartum journey - internal + topicalwhy she considers vaginal steams a core part of holistic postpartum carehow to know when to return to sex after birthways to connect with your vulva and wombspace with tender love + carean invitation to offer yourself hands-in care to support pelvic muscle relaxationResources:Today's shownotes: Get link's to Rebecca's work + other resources Episode 25: Immediate herbal postpartum care with Liz PhilbrickEpisode 43: Vaginal steaming with Julia Demillones MooreEpisode 49: How to create a sacred window with Ashlee Sakaishi-WilkinEpisode 81: Deep restorative postpartum care with Rachael HollingerSign up for my Natural Contraception (Jan 2024) course waitlist! If you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdom.  And if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! Today I talked to Elizabeth Graver about her new novel Kantika (Metropolitan Books, 2023). Rebecca Cohen and her family live in Istanbul, until they lose all their wealth and are forced to leave. It's also no longer safe for Jews, and many are trying to find a place to go. Rebecca's father, once a successful businessman, now cleans a synagogue in Barcelona. Rebecca finds work as a seamstress and marries a man who is barely at home. He later dies, leaving her with two young sons to raise on her own, but she's already started her own business. A second marriage is arranged, but she has to get to Havana to meet her potential husband, and he has to lie to get back to the states faster than the usual bureaucracy allows. Finally, married and in her new home, she's challenged with helping her disabled stepdaughter, learning yet another new language, and building a new life. Rebecca was a tenacious heroine whose story has been lovingly fictionalized by her granddaughter, author Elizabeth Graver. Elizabeth Graver's fourth novel, The End of the Point, was long-listed for the 2013 National Book Award in Fiction and selected as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her other novels are Awake, The Honey Thief, and Unravelling. Her story collection, Have You Seen Me?, won the 1991 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Her work has been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards, The Pushcart Prize Anthology, and Best American Essays. We have a new podcast! It's called Universe Of Art, and it's all about artists who use science to bring their creations to the next level. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.   No, The Gulf Stream Is Not Collapsing A sobering climate study came out this week in the journal Nature Communications. It suggests that a system of ocean currents—called the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC)—could collapse sometime between 2025 and 2095, which could have dire climate consequences for the North Atlantic. SciFri director of news and audio John Dankosky talks with Swapna Krishna, a journalist based in Philadelphia, about what this means and what could be at stake. They also chat through other big science news of the week, including the detection of water vapor around a very distant star, a new image depicting the first detection of gas giants being formed around stars, a new theory for the origin of the world's “gravity hole,” why the fuzzy asp caterpillar packs such a scary sting, and what scientists can learn from ticklish rats.   The State Of Reproductive Health, One Year After Dobbs In the year since the Supreme Court decided Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, overturning the federal right to an abortion, states jumped into action. Thirteen states banned abortion with limited exemptions, and three others have banned abortion after the first trimester. A handful of other states have extremely restrictive abortion access, or otherwise remain in legal limbo, awaiting court decisions or new laws to be signed. Leading up to Dobbs decision, SciFri delved into the science behind reproductive health and the potential ripple effects on access to care. Now, a little over a year later, we're following up what's going on. SciFri guest host and experiences manager Diana Plasker talks with Usha Ranji, associate director for Women's Health Policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation, based in San Francisco, California, about her survey of 569 OB-GYNs across the country. They discuss the growing disparities in states between where abortion is banned and where it remains legal. Later, John Dankosky talks with Dr. Rebecca Cohen, chief medical officer at the Comprehensive Women's Health Center, based in Denver, Colorado, about providing abortion and pregnancy care in a state where abortion is legal, and seeing patients who are traveling from states with bans in place.   The Kākāpō Parrot Returns To New Zealand Before humans arrived in New Zealand, parrots called kākāpō freely roamed across the islands. They are the world's only living flightless parrots, and they're a bit smaller than the average chicken. But the kākāpō's population started crashing centuries ago, due to human interference and the arrival of predators like cats, rats, and stoats. At one point, the species was teetering on the brink of extinction. For decades, scientists have been capturing and relocating kākāpō to safe islands, hoping their population would grow. It did, and the kākāpō's recovery team just reached a huge milestone: bringing four birds back to the mainland, a place they haven't existed since the 1980s. Guest host and SciFri events manager Diana Plasker talks with Deidre Vercoe, operations manager for the New Zealand Department of Conservation's kākāpō and takahē teams, about the history of kākāpō conservation, what this win means, and what's next for these beloved birds.   Far Beyond Their Native Habitat, Parrots Rule The Roost In many urban areas across the U.S. and abroad, feral, non-native parrots have become established. This is true in Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, where a colony of lime green monk parakeets have inhabited a massive nest on top of the gothic entrance gate. How exactly these parrots wound up here is a bit of a mystery. “The lore that's passed around is that at some point a box of parrots, perhaps at the airport, got overturned,” said science writer Ryan Mandelbaum. “What's more likely is a combination of people releasing their [pet] parrots and parrots escaping in some critical mass.” Mandelbaum wrote the cover story for July's issue of Scientific American all about the resilience of parrots. SciFri producer Kathleen Davis interviewed them at Green-Wood Cemetery, where they discussed why these parrots are not just surviving, but thriving.   To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Rebecca Cohen explained how Share My Journey “connects caring people to share knowledge and experience during challenging life circumstances.” She created a way for people who lived through a certain experience to give support to people currently living that experience. Whether the experience deals with family, career, or any of life’s endless enigmas, Share My Journey is filled with insights built from first-hand experience. Rebecca recalled the countless times she had no one in her immediate circle to discuss a problem with. She wanted to speak with someone who navigated the problem before her, and could understand what it’s like to go through similar circumstances. After eight years of sitting on the idea, Rebecca decided to launch Share My Journey after participating in a 48 hour social venture launch camp called Seed Spot.  A lot can be learned from Rebecca’s “just start” process. She would focus on diving into the next simple step, rather than overthinking the next five steps. When first starting, she sent a message out on a neighborhood app to find participants, and 12 strangers responded right away. She said in that moment, “I knew I was onto something.” Needs for connection and conversation unmasked itself to Rebecca through Share My Journey. She expressed the realization of how much impact a meaningful conversation can have on the giver and receiver. Share My Journey received positive feedback not only from the surveys taken by participants, but Rebecca shared that she receives unsolicited emails complimenting the initiative. “…an authentic connection or a conversation that's meaningful; it’s such powerful medicine, and this is a tool that's available to us now to add to our toolbox of things that can reduce our anxiety, or at least provide a way to acknowledge the anxiety that we feel with what's going on.”--Rebecca Cohen For connection, Rebecca asked people about their memories of receiving help. She found that each person she interviewed mentioned a time when they were offered help without asking. She expressed the power behind offering help and explained the ways she integrates this principle into her own life. Rebecca then talked about her pitching to mentors, and the feedback given to her ideas. The task of pushing her idea out for people to evaluate brought Rebecca lessons in pivoting the execution of her ideas. From this, Rebecca outlined general, simple steps in starting with what you have. Social venture projects seem to start very naturally and internally for Rebecca. She gave the background story on how she became an author, and the real life events that led her to write specific topics that relate to her own experiences. The growth of Rebecca’s projects also comes naturally. She explained what I like to think of as community support developing a project compared to the strings of investor funding. Then, she dove into what she envisions for Share My Journey as the initiative progresses. If you would like to learn more, you can check out Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or the official website.
