"There is a high global prevalence of hostile work environment in cardiology, including discrimination, emotional harassment, and sexual harassment.” Sharma G. et al. JACC 2021. Dr Naidu was at the beginning of his career when, having experienced micro-aggression, his chairman shared an insight that still shapes the way he thinks about addressing professional jealousy and bullying: “Don't let people bring you down, you just keep working and lift them up.” In this week's Parallax, Dr Ankur Kalra is joined by Dr Srihari S Naidu, Director of Cath Labs and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at the Westchester Medical Center and President Elect of NY ACC, for an honest conversation on a challenging topic within the cardiology community. Cardiology, a highly competitive field, still generates the sense that power is equal to strength. In this insightful and practical episode, Hari revisits his own experiences both as a leader and as a trainee, navigating complex situations. What can you do as a target when being bullied? How can hostile environment, cliques be best addressed? Ankur asks what skills are needed to help mitigate the emotional impact of intimidation. Hari elaborates on what it means to belong to a team, and how can leaders at a local level work for an inclusive community, a better cardiology for all. Cardiac imaging is important not only for diagnosing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) but also in making decisions about treatment and risk of future events. Dr. Milind Desai, Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center, takes you through the types of testing and what they show. Tests include basic echocardiogram, specialized echo testing, MRI and transesophageal echo. Patients require testing at baseline to diagnose HCM and monitoring over time – it is your friend for life!
Cardiac Consult: A Cleveland Clinic Podcast for Healthcare Professionals
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center specialists have recently published three papers related to a wide range of patients with HCM, including the elderly, pediatric and general population. Dr. Milind Desai, Director of the HCM Center reviews the implications for diagnosis, management and risk stratification based on the results of these papers.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) involves more than septal thickness. Dr. Nicholas Smedira, Surgical Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center describes what happens when a patient has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A team approach is used to understand the anatomy and cause of obstruction. Many surgical approaches are available to individualize the care for the HCM patient to address the obstruction or treat the heart when a patient has HCM without obstruction.

Cardiac Consult: A Cleveland Clinic Podcast for Healthcare Professionals
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in the majority of cases causes restriction of blood flow in the outflow tract of the heart caused by systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve. Dr. Steve Nissen talks with cardiologist Dr. Milind Desai and surgeon Dr. Nick Smedira, Directors of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center, about current treatment options, such as medications and surgical therapy, what we have learned from years of experience with HCM at Cleveland Clinic, and a new innovative medication that is being researched that may reduce the need for – or delay surgery.
After a webchat, Dr. Harry Lever, Director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center, reviewed common questions that patients asked about diagnostic testing, symptoms, when a patient needs surgery for HCM (myectomy and/or mitral valve repair), and genetic testing.
In this episode I visit with Dr Richard Bach, the director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at Washington University. We talk about everything from diagnosis, risk of exercise, medical management, indications for myectomy and alcohol ablations. Link to transcript on MedPage Today
