“Can miles truly separate you from friends... If you want to be with someone you love, aren't you already there?” Richard Bach I am thrilled to announce that our new book, the Kindness Daily Reader: Season One, will be available from July 1, 2024. Secondly, we are embarking on a new chapter with Season Three of the One Kind Moment podcast. In Season One, we primarily focused on broad topics of kindness and compassion, while in Season Two, we explored areas such as self-compassion, self-help, and self-care. Now, in Season Three, we're shifting our focus to a specific area of self-care that we call Practical Spirituality for Everyone. We'll be delving into topics like spirituality in nature, spiritual intelligence, everyday mindfulness, the science of consciousness, the mystery of life, the science of awe, and managing uncertainty. We're excited to take this new direction and are grateful for your continued support and interest in the One Kind Moment podcast. #onekindmoment #spirituality Yesterday by John Hobart - Music Design by Jason Inc. https://brucewaynemclellan.com/

Their story is incredible and along the way we learn about how beautifully they've built a truly organic fertilizer company from fish by-products that fuel the most productive gardens through nutrient-building. Ann invites us into her world by explaining how the fish fertilizer is made, how they run the business now, and how they've developed the products that work so magically, without compromising their organic and pure promise. Ann shares about giant pumpkins, combatting powdery mildew, roses, products that organically kill grubs and so much more. Ann's favorite books: Illusions by Richard Bach and The Secret Life of Lobsters by Trevor Corson For more information on Neptune's Harvest, go to www.neptunesharvest.com or ask your local nursery. But no book strikes me more than Verghese Kurien's autobiography, I Too Had a Dream. Kurien's story is of a genuine Indian folk hero. I have learned some of the most enduring lessons of business from a heavily underlined and dog-eared copy of the classic Made in America.”“A book I would like to recommend to everyone is Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It provides a step-by-step framework for living and working, based on some fundamental principles or natural laws.”“Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist and Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingstone Seagull have inspired many of us within the organisation and helped us achieve what others thought impossible”“Another equally motivating book is Anthony Robbins' Awaken the Giant Within. It explores how every human being can live up to their true potential."Further recommended readings:“Among my favourites is Howard Schultz's Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time. All the Links - https://linktr.ee/barbarafaison This is an episode about how I believe discipline and commitment trump inspiration and motivation. I've known Regenna London since 1995 and in those years we have experienced a lot of life together. As a fellow creative (she's a Gemini, so you know some creating is going on there) we have been each others talk it out partners for projects and life. I think it has been about 16 years since she created her Forty Day Plan, which is a journal with questions, reminders and encouragement to focus on something for forty days to help you live life better. Regenna and I have been using this plan since its inception, between 2 - 4 times a year. It's a great way to create structure for me and to have discipline to complete projects or goals. I also realize that it is winter, so I choose things that are not as challenging to do and I still feel like I'm moving forward in life. We are on Day 38 - Be Proud - Courage has its rewards is the encouragement for today. Indeed, it takes courage to do something for 40 days. Only two more days left! I know myself, so I chose three things to focus on: Read something daily. Journal or write my affirmations. Practice Qigong. I know me…I also chose to start cleaning out my pictures on my phone and tablet, so I've been doing that, just not every day. And sometimes I pull a card from my card deck. Lol. How am I doing with the plan? I finished a book called Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach and I'm reading a few other books as well. I also gave myself permission to not finish a some books I started reading. I get to decide how I want to spend my time. Why spend precious hours reading a book that I will most likely not remember days after I finish it? I'm sharing the Be Yourself excerpt from my book/eBook/audiobook, Why Struggle? Life is too short to wear tight shoes, today. Be Yourself I am very fortunate to have a great circle of friends. When you love yourself and understand who you are and what you bring to the world, you only want to be you. I am a great Barbara but not a good Suzanne or any other friend. Suzanne is my oldest friend, we've been friends over 50 years. I love her dearly for who she is. How many times have you thought, “If they really knew me, they probably wouldn't like me?” How long have you pretended to be someone else simply to please other people? Pretending to be someone you aren't takes a toll on us mentally, physically and spiritually. If I depended on being motivated or being inspired to do any of these things, it wouldn't happen. The Forty Day Plan gives me structure, accountability and encouragement. I'm grateful for Regenna who created The Forty Plan journal…it keep me committed and accountable. What keeps you committed? Jim Oliver founded Create Tailwind in 1988 in Denver, Colorado. Originally, a full-service financial planning firm, Jim and his team weathered two major corrections on Wall Street and pivoted Create Tailwind's focus to building wealth beyond Wall Street. Teaching clients to create wealth without Wall Street brokers and financial planners took off, to most people becoming their own banker was something they couldn't envision. Most people park their money in qualified plans or with a broker and hope that the money grows. Jim reminds his clients that hope is not a strategy. He teaches his clients that becoming their own banker means they accumulate money, and they deploy it to make it even more money, this is the mind shift. Under Jim's leadership Create Tailwind exploded to become a multilocation nationally recognized firm helping 1000s of individuals and businesses around the United States. Questions • So, we always like to give our guests an opportunity to share with our listeners a little bit about their journey, how they got to where they are today. So, could you take some time on share that with our listeners, Jim? • Could you take some time to share with our listeners a little bit about your company – Create Tailwind? I know I read about it in the bio, and in terms of what you help them doing, just share with us, what are some of the value-added opportunities that you are offering to your clients? • What are some of the key things that you try to do with your clients in terms of supporting them? I know you offer the courses and you're teaching them a theory. But let's say for example, you're working with a client, this mindset that you're trying to encourage or envision, it's not clicking for them. What are some strategies or techniques that you utilise, to kind of get those persons on board to transition them from where they are to where you want them to be? • What are some things that you found, give me three things that you find tend to be general obstacles that prevent persons from reaching their maximum potential when it comes to wealth? And then you listen to all of these podcasts and you listen to all of these or read these books, and they say there's a difference between being rich and being wealthy. How do you get people because if you look them up in the Oxford dictionary, they pretty much have the same meaning. So, how would you differentiate? • Could you also share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? • Can you also share with our listeners, maybe one or two books that have had a great impact on you, it could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you've read recently. • Could you also share with our listeners what's the one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about? Either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. • Where can listeners find you online? • Before we wrap our episodes up, Jim, we always like to ask our guests, could you provide us with a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you will tend to revert to this code, it kind of helps to get you back on track, if for any reason you got derailed. Highlights Jim's Journey Jim shared that he was born in Los Angeles. And he has five siblings, and he was a middle child, but he was given up for adoption. And this is kind of the PG version, but his mother, his birth mother said that she was raped, and her husband thought that she had an affair. He (Jim) found out at 55 years old that he was actually his father. But he grew up in foster care and then he grew up in a very poor area of Los Angeles. And he became fascinated with money and he also became fascinated with business owners because he started working in a casket factory when he was 13 years old, swinging a hammer and he watched the business owner and he knew that he lived on the hill of Palace Vertis, which was a foreign country to him. It was where people had wealth, they had abundance, they had all of these things, that the people in his neighbourhood, they didn't have any of those things. And he really just was driven by what do those people that live on the hill know and by the beach know and in Beverly Hills know that the people that live in Inglewood and neighbourhoods like that, that they don't know. And he went to school, did everything the way that he was supposed to, learned about Wall Street and investments. And he did that, and he was very successful at building a financial planning firm. But then he realized that his clients weren't getting wealthy in Wall Street. And he analyzed all of his clients and he threw out all the ones that got lucky. They were the janitor at Google and they just made millions of dollars. He threw the lucky ones out and he said, “What is it that my clients, my really wealthy clients, what have they done to become wealthy?” And it came down to two things, business owners and real estate. And he changed his whole focus to teach people how to be business owners, and how to own real estate, and how to build cash flow and assets, instead of Wall Street instruments and government-controlled plans. About Jim's Company Create Tailwind and Value-Added Opportunities for Clients Me: Could you take some time to share with our listeners a little bit about your company – Create Tailwind? I know I read about it in the bio, and in terms of what you help them doing, just share with us, what are some of the value-added opportunities that you are offering to your clients? Jim shared that the other thing that he realized is that every financial planner in the world is trying to sell something to their prospects, clients, customers, and he didn't like that, he didn't want to sell. So, what he decided is that the reason that he decided to personally start to build cash flow instead of instruments, assets instead of instruments, and not try to build up this lump sum, nest egg, is he became more and more educated about cash flow and assets, and banking, and becoming his own banker, and how he could control the banking function in his life. And so, he decided that what he would do is he would just educate other people. So, the way that they serve their clients, and really help them understand the landscape out there, and how to build wealth, is they educate them. They have a community, that's Create Tailwind community. And it's Create Tailwind, because they're all fighting a financial headwind, and he's showing you how to turn that around so that wind will actually push you forward, instead of fight against your progress. And at the community Create Tailwind, they just teach people, they teach people and the community members teach each other. But they have courses, they have discussions, they have book recommendations, they have book reviews, they have all of these different things that is intended to do one thing, educate their customers, and anybody really that is interested, anybody can join the community for free. And they learn about taxes and how to be more tax invisible, they learn about becoming their own bank, how a bank works, and how you can control the banking function in your life instead of the commercial bank. How your need for finance over your lifetime is much greater than your need for an investment. All of these things, they're basically teaching people so that if they choose, they can change their mindset. And they can change their path to where they're on the path of wealth, instead of the path of financial slavery, like most people are. Strategies and Techniques Utilized to Transition from Where They Are to Where They Want Them to Be Me: What are some of the key things that you try to do with your clients in terms of supporting them? I know you offer the courses and you're teaching them the theory. But let's say for example, you're working with a client, this mindset that you're trying to encourage or envision, it's not clicking for them. What are some strategies or techniques that you utilize, to kind of get those persons on board to transition them from where they are to where you want them to be? Jim stated that that's a great question. And what they do is they do Zoom meetings, even way before COVID. They did Zoom meetings, and originally it was WebEx back in the day. And they will get on there and they will do Q&A…whatever questions you have….whatever things aren't making sense. And he has this board that he draws on, it's a graphics board. And he finds that people learn visually, a lot more than they learned verbally and so, when you're thinking about money and the way money flows, and the way that money works, they need to see numbers, they need to see the flow. So, he draws that out, or the team draws that out for them. And they can see it and they can say, “Hey, but I don't understand this. I don't understand that.” They can ask any question they want. They do that individually and one on one on a Zoom meeting, so you don't have to ask the question in front of a group. They also occasionally do live Q&A meetings where the community will ask questions live, and they answer those questions live. And so, that's really the big focus is that and they're always building more content, more content to help their clients understand what they need financially out there in the world, and how to protect themselves and their families and their businesses. Obstacles Preventing Persons from Reaching Their Maximum Potential When it Comes to Wealth Me: Now, Jim, you've been doing this for quite a bit a years now. What are some things that you found, give me three things that you find tend to be general obstacles that prevent persons from reaching their maximum potential when it comes to wealth? And then you listen to all of these podcasts and you listen to all of these or read these books, and they say there's a difference between being rich and being wealthy. How do you get people because if you look them up in the Oxford dictionary, they pretty much have the same meaning. So, how would you differentiate? Jim shared that the first is show them what is happening now. If you put money in a 401 K, or an IRA, or some government backed programme, that has rules, penalties, all this stuff, or if you put money in Wall Street, here's what's happening to it. Here's how inflation works. Here's how fees and expenses inside those funds work. Here's how commissions work. And so, it's kind of like, if you know what's happening, you'll know what to do. So, the first thing if somebody doesn't realize what's happening to their money, he has to show them how a bank works. And so, they kind of show them what really is going on. The second thing is, the second obstacle is that we've been filled with noise. And the funny thing is, he heard this number, and he really think that it's accurate, is that we see 5000 marketing messages a day. Now, it could be on TV, it could be a logo on somebody's shirt. But all of that is designed to get our money to flow away from us. We see a shirt that we like on TV and it has the logo, and you think I want that shirt, I want those shoes, somebody is wearing shoes, they're driving a car, if you think of all the input, all of that noise every day, but there's nothing that's designed to help us increase our cash flow. It's designed to get us to flow our money away from us to someone else. And the difference between wealthy people and poor people, is wealthy people get money to flow to them. And poor people, all their money flows away from them. And so, that's the second obstacle. And then the third obstacle is, “Okay, I understand what's happening, I get that I've been taught the wrong things about money. But I don't have anybody to help me, I don't have anybody to help me get from where I am to where I want to be.” So that's the third thing that he would say is that you have to find a coach. Whatever community that you're in, it doesn't matter whether you're in a lower income community, inner city, rural, it doesn't matter. There are people in that community that are buying assets that own the apartment complexes, the mobile home parks, the RV parks, the businesses, they own those things, and they are more than happy to help you if you ask. So, the third thing and how what he really believe that you have to have is you have to have a guide, you have to have a coach, if you think about it, in every movie that you've ever seen, the person that has a problem meets a guy, they need a coach and that coach helps them overcome their dilemma. Tiger Woods, the greatest golfer of all time, he has a coach and the reason is, is that so the coach can help him learn how to do what he does better and better and better and give him the confidence. So, those are the three things that he believes that are obstacles for people to grow their wealth and have everything in life that they want and have that abundant mindset that is limitless in creating cash flow to them. App, Website or Tool that Jim Absolutely Can't Live Without in His Business When asked about online resources that he cannot live without in his business, Jim shared that he would say that it's Zoom, because that's how they communicate with their clients and there are other competitors, but he finds Zoom to be the easiest for his clients and customers to use. It doesn't require that you join or login or anything else, you can just go to the www.zoom.us and plug in the meeting and plug in the password if there is one, and you're in the meeting. And you could be meeting with anybody at any time 24/7 and you could see the person, the person can share and use a whiteboard, and they can do all kinds of things. So, that's the one thing that he wouldn't be able to operate his business without. Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Jim When asked about books that have a great impact, Jim shared that he'll give one from a really long time ago and it always kind of surprises people, but it's Jonathan Livingston Seagull: The Complete Edition and it's by Richard Bach. He's the author and they used to, he's (Jim) 57 years old, so they don't make kids read this anymore. But here's the gist of the book is Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a seagull and seagulls don't have very exciting lives, they eat, they fly from here to there, they don't do anything. But Jonathan, he wanted to fly and do stunts, and he wanted to go out and see what was out there in the world. Well, when you grow up poor in Los Angeles, and you think, is this it? Do I just have to stay here and accept my life as it is, and be poor the rest of my life? Well, Jonathan Livingston Seagull taught him, “No I don't, I can go out and do other things. I can be anything that I want to be.” And so, that book had a huge impact on him. And then the second one is Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! By Robert T. Kiyosaki, because it gave him an example, he didn't like school very much. And so, if the path, the only path was to study hard, get a good job, get straight A's in school, and then work his way up the ladder and hope that he was in the good old boys' club. He doesn't think he could have done that. But Rich Dad, Poor Dad showed him an alternative, it showed him a different way that it didn't really matter about his formal education, it was how he educated himself outside of school, the mentors that he had, the people that had what he wanted, and that would share with me how they did it. What Jim is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something that he's really excited about, Jim shared that the one thing that he's really excited about is he has a book coming out in June 17, 2023. And like he said, he struggled in school. So, he was a stutter, he didn't write very well. So, for him to write a book, he's really excited and proud of the fact that he's telling his kind of life story in the beginning, in his humble beginnings, and kind of where he is now. And then if he can do it, you can do it. And so, he's excited to share that message with people and give them the foundation of how to start today to change their lives. Me: Nice. So, we will definitely ensure that we are able to keep in touch with you so that we will have first dibs on that book when it is released. Jim stated that he would love that. Where Can We Find Jim Online Email – jimoliver@createtailwind.com Website – www.community.createtailwind.com Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Jim Uses When asked about a quote or saying that he tends to revert to, Jim shared that one thing is there's an old quote that he changed it was, “Adversity introduces a man to himself.” Now, that's an old quote. So, he says, “Adversity introduces a person to themselves.” And it reminds him that in the Bible, it says that we are going to have trials. And that trials, it says that, that those trials will introduce us to ourselves, that it will create confidence, that it will create strength, that God is like stirring this pot of silver and getting rid of the impurities until He can see His reflection in us. And so, getting rid of those impurities is adversity and obstacles and they just make you stronger, they make you who you are, so when you're in the middle of it, just remember that that adversity is going to introduce you as a person to who you really are and it's only going to make you stronger. With traumatic events, I find myself going within and taking time to reflect, which I have been doing plenty of lately. Sharing my story has been on the agenda for a while. Still, I like to let things fall into place naturally, so that is up this week on AwakenYou in your marriage, my marriage mini-revival story.Richard Bach says it best, "We teach best what we most need to learn," and it is no secret that this is why helping others lead their marriage to a love revival intrigues me and lights me up so much.As I learn and help others achieve their relationship dreams, I keep doing that same work in my marriage, and I have BIG plans for Jeff and me
Ep- # 224 - Richard Bach's Life Adventure, A Revisit of a 2014 Interview with Author and Pilot, Richard Bach We have now entered into the month of April. It feels like Spring is finally in the air. The sun is shining and the flowers have begun to bloom, at least that's true for Southern California. I hope that is also true for your hometown as well. The theme for this month is, “Xiexie” which means Thank You in Chinese. So, all of this month's shows will relate to thank you, gratitude or being grateful. The show I am featuring for this episode of Empowering Chats is an interview I did in 2014 when I used to host a radio show called, “Living Your Inspired Life with Susan Burrell.” It features author and pilot, Richard Bach. It's the perfect show to kickstart this month's theme. In August of 2012 Richard Bach suffered a serious plane crash while flying solo in the San Juan Islands. We talk about this “life adventure,” and what it meant to kiss death and survive it. He spent a full year in recovery following this accident and he writes about it in his book: “Illusions II – The Adventures of a Reluctant Student.” Richard learned to be a pilot while in the Air Force in 1954. His other love was writing. And his life changed one night in 1959 as he walked home and heard a voice behind him say: “Jonathan Livingston Seagull.” He turned around to find that no one was there. He rushed back home to his apartment and when he sat down at his desk, a full movie played out in front of his eyes, showing the seagull's story. This was the beginning of his famous novel, “Jonathon Livingston Seagull.” He received 19 rejection letters before it was finally published in 1970 and became a best-seller. It catapulted Richard to stardom and it has remained in print for over fifty years.

“A genius is a man who has discovered how to increase the intensity of thought to a point when he can freely communicate with sources of knowledge not available through the ordinary rate of thought.” –Napoleon Hill, author of the Best Selling Classic Book, Think and Grow Rich. In PART 3 we cover: ✔ A look at Speed Learning with 2 strategies we can all use right away to learn faster, and remember what we have learned longer. ✔ Creative Sleep, and how to use our sleep to solve problems, improve creativity and intuition in our waking hours, with 4 steps to improving your ability to use and remember your dreams. Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast and PART 3 of our Review of Jose Silva's Mind Control Program. I'm Andrea Samadi an author and an educator, who like many of you listening, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind ANY high-performance strategy proven to increase our results in our schools, sports, or modern workplaces. If there's something NEW that I come across that can help us in any way, I'll investigate it, connect it with the most current research, and then share what I learn with you here. If you've been following the past few episodes, you'll know that I came across Jose Silva's work with Dr. Hasan Ibne Akram, from EPISODE #260[i], who has launched 7 successful companies, and mentioned that this book completely changed his world. I had heard of this book and Silva's Program over the years, and many of the concepts that Jose Silva mentions in his book, but had not read it cover to cover, or practiced the audio training that goes along with the book, so I decided to do a complete review of the program, like we did with Napoleon Hill's book at the start of this year, and see how this book, that was popular in the 80s and 90s could connect to the interviews we've done previously on this podcast. Especially when Friederike Fabritius mentioned on EPISODE #258[ii] that our mind can be trained to produce flashes of insight, that can help us in business and our personal lives and what Jose Silva would say could reveal “some astounding things” with a trained mind. I wondered how exactly could our mind be trained... Was daily meditation not enough? If it was, how do I even know if I'm meditating the right way? What was I missing from my current practice? What can we learn from the years of research behind Jose Silva's popular program that could help all of us to refine our current meditation practice? Then I thought back to a class I took with Jon Kabat-Zinn, the father of mindfulness, who reminded us in this class that we are already perfect, (as we are) and that mindfulness is not about “attaining a certain state, (that brings us to this new level of perfection) but that we are already whole and perfect.” Whatever program we are doing now, the idea of this book review is not to say that Jose Silva's method is better, or that we might be missing something from what we are already doing, but to see if there's anything NEW that we cover here, that interests us to dive deeper into, to further enhance our current practice. Jim Kwik, the founder of Kwik Learning[iii], has said that “we've discovered more in the past 20 years about our brain than we've known in the previous 2,000 years combined” and I think it's so exciting to share new strategies to help us all, which is the purpose of this podcast. When I learn something new, something that can help me to improve in any way, this energizes me, this gets me all jazzed up, and I know I can't be the only one like this. I'm sure for those of you who tune into this podcast, can relate to what I'm saying and I'm honored that you've chosen me to study with, wherever you might be tuning into this podcast around the world. I love looking at the statistics to see where listeners are tuning in from in over 168 countries, which is a Geography lesson for me when I look at the map of the world. For this book review, little263-INTRO did I know just how powerful Silva's program would be, when I recorded PART 1 of this series. As I began reading each chapter that Jose Silva wrote many years ago when he was on a quest to increase learning for his own children, I began piecing together many of the strategies that we've covered on this podcast for improving learning, focus, creativity, imagination and productivity, all backed by science, right within the pages of The Silva Method. I made many connections to past episodes and research, including Dr. John Dunlosky from EPISODE #37[iv] where he spoke about using “spaced repetition” as an evidence-based method for improving recall for students, that we will cover today. This research also appears in John Almarode, Nancy Frey and Douglas Fisher's recent book, How Learning Works: Translating the Science of Learning into Strategies in Your Classroom that we covered on EPISODE #161[v]. Or even the importance of mindfulness and meditation in the classroom, for athletes or in the workplace. The connection to current research was enough for me to see that Jose Silva was on to something with the methods he wrote about, years before the research would take off exponentially in this area. Daniel Goleman wrote about this in his book Altered Traits[vi] where he showed a visual with the research on Mindfulness and Meditation going up exponentially from the year 2000, to 2020. My goal with this review of The Silva Method[vii], is to help all of us to learn something new to refine our current meditation practice whether we are working in our schools to improve learning, in our sports environments for improved results towards a specific goal, or in the corporate workplace to generate new ideas. I wouldn't have picked this book to review if it hadn't made such an impact on the world, like Napoleon Hills' book, but I had no idea the concepts I would learn each week, would be so powerful, and life-changing. After releasing the first 2 PARTS of this program, I began to receive messages from our listeners around the world who have used Silva's Program, even from those who used it years ago. Then my good friend Hans Ajay from the UK, urged me to sign up for the full program through MindValley[viii], (where the course sits today after Vishen Lakhiani (the founder) revised and improved it in this current version. Hans wrote “It'll be transformative.” I don't need anyone to twist my arm if there's going to be transformation and learning occurring, so I signed up immediately taking what I'm learning in the pages of Silva's book to a whole new level. I'll stick to covering each chapter, but have to say that the experiential exercises have brought each chapter to life in a way that I don't think it's possible for me to show with my writing. I'll connect as many exercises as I can find online with each chapter review, and encourage those of you who want to learn more to explore the entire program further through MindValley. This course is unlike anything I've ever experienced in all my years of studying and learning. To REVIEW, In PART 1[ix] we covered: ✔ CH 1- Using More of Our Mind in Special Ways: An Introduction to the Silva Mind Control Method ✔ What this program has done for others. ✔ Ch 2- Meet Jose Silva ✔ Ch 3- How to Meditate: A review of the brain states (BETA, ALPHA, THETA, DELTA). ✔ How to quickly access the ALPHA STATE to improve creativity, and intuition. ✔ Using A Mental Screen in Your Mind for Heightened Visualization ✔ How to Help Yourself and Others Using a Mental Screen in Our Mind UNDERSTANDING HOW TO ACCESS THE ALPHA BRAIN STATE: Once we understand the different brain states, and how to access them, it makes more sense as we dive into the Alpha State, and practice visualizing on the screen of our mind in this state with the meditation exercises. Understanding the Alpha Level of Mind is the first step in Silva's Mind Control Program, and used by itself, had tremendous health capabilities. When you are daydreaming, or just going to sleep but not quite there yet, or just awakening but not yet awake, you are in Alpha Brain State that Silva calls the "inner consciousness” where he says is our mental world exists, with no time or space. With Silva's Mind Control training you can enter the Alpha level at will and still remain fully alert, which is where the exciting part of his program begins. I found 2 meditations on YouTube that I've listed below to help us to gain access to the experiential activities and take the first steps to applying Jose Silva's program into our daily life. ALPHA MEDITATION 1 How to Enter the Alpha Level of Mind, This first video is an introduction, helping us to understand how to enter the Alpha state of mind easily. Jose Silva explains what one needs to do to reach the Alpha, or meditative, level of mind, and this video illustrates his words beautifully. ALPHA MEDITATION EXAMPLE 2: Here's a second example I found on YouTube of entering the Alpha State and practicing our Mental Screen, with the 3, 2, 1, countdown method in a (25 minutes meditation) with Sommer Leigh, who reads Silva's Alpha Meditation exactly as he would, but obviously this time, it's with a female voice and peaceful music. Sommer does address the fact that someone new to meditating should begin with counting down from 100 to 1 to reach the Alpha level, using the countdown method that Silva suggests. If you prefer a male voice for this activity, you can sign up for MindValley.com where Vishen Lakhiani goes through this same exercise, that he calls “Tapping into Alpha with a Centering Exercise” or you can hear Vishen's YouTube version of The 20 Minute Silva Centering Exercise here from MindValley's Channel. Once you reach the Alpha level, (either in the morning, or a night or any time of day that you have to spend 15 minutes) Silva explains this is where we envision a peaceful place to help us to relax our mind, and body for improved health. This is also the place where we can practice solving a problem that we will go deeper into in PART 2. This meditation ends with the 1-5 countdown method to exit the meditation, where we feel better than we did before. Jose Silva reminds us that if we did nothing other than practice going to this peaceful state of mind, it would have tremendous health and wellness benefits that research now proves to be true. In PART 2[x] of our review, on our last episode, we covered: ✔ Ch 4- Dynamic Meditation (where we actually DO something while meditating, instead of it being a passive practice). ✔ The 4 Laws that must be in place BEFORE we visualize a goal. ✔ How these 4 Laws mirror Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich book. ✔ 3 STEPS to SOLVE ANY PROBLEM Using the Silva Method on the Screen that We Build in Our Mind. ✔ Ch 5- Improving Memory ✔ Where Silva's Memory Hacks have been seen on previous episodes and in the motivational speaking industry. In PART 3 of our review, today's EPISODE #263, we will cover: ✔ Ch 6-Speed Learning ✔ Ch 7-Creative Sleep For Chapter 6: Speed Learning I couldn't begin writing about Silva's strategies, without referring to Jim Kwik[xi] first, the founder of Kwik Learning, who created his entire business around how to reader faster, work smarter and think better by accelerating your learning and your life by unlocking what he calls our “superbrain.” Jim Kwik reminds us something I'm sure we've all heard of a million times, that school teaches us WHAT to learn (History, Math, Science, Languages) but “there are ZERO classes on how to learn, listen, focus, concentrate, solve problems, read faster or remember things.” We mentioned Howard Berg, The World's Fastest Speed Reader on our last episode, who taught us on EPISODE #189[xii] many skills that school never taught us, like speed reading or memory tricks. Jose Silva was ahead of his game when he began looking for ways to teach his children, and eventually thousands of others who studied his methods, to learn faster, and be able to remember what they learned for longer periods of time. He offers two strategies in his book: STRATEGY 1: THE MENTAL SCREEN FOR LEARNING PAIRED WITH THE 3 FINGER TECHNIQUE Silva suggests using our Mental Screen for learning, to speed up and deepen what we learn. He also uses the 3 Finger Technique to help us to reach the Alpha State quicker, which can be done while reading to help with focus, concentration and retention, and he outlines a teacher from Denver who used this Three Finger Technique to teach her students spelling with a list of 20 words. To test them, she would ask them to write down the words they studied that week, recall the words using the Three Finger Technique, and see the words on the screen of their minds. She was able to teach all of her students to remember their spelling list with this method. STRATEGY 2: RECORD YOUR VOICE The second method for Speed Learning, I'm most interest in, as I had heard about this strategy in the past. Silva suggests recording your voice when you need to learn something new. When I worked in the seminar industry, we called this a “loop tape” and this strategy was for anyone who wanted to take their results to new heights. Whether they were studying for a test, and needed to learn something new, or an actor who needed to memorize their lines quickly, a loop tape was recommended. I even remember it was suggested to me when I first moved to the US, and found life in this new country to be challenging. The first thing our offices said was “has Andrea created a loop tape of what she wants her life to look like?” Sounds a bit off the wall, but if you don't think something first, on the screen of your mind, you'll be less likely to know what you are looking for when you see it. It's crazy to look back now, because my current life looks pretty much the way I imagined it to look 20+ years ago, when I created my first loop tape, and even drew a sketch of what I envisioned the house I would live in, would look like. PUTTING THIS INTO PRACTICE: For someone who want to apply this strategy to learning something new, Silva suggests to read the chapter that you are studying out loud (or whatever it is that you want to remember) and record it while you're in the beta brain state, or wide awake and focused. Next, he says, go to the alpha brain state (by counting backwards using the 3, 2, 1 method, or with the 3 Finger Technique and listen to what you recorded while in this state, concentrating on your voice. For added reinforcement, he suggests to let a few days pass and then do it again. Read the material in your beta state and play it back in alpha. This is also in line with Dr. John Dunlosky's research, using spaced repetition. Chapter 7 of The Silva Method on Creative Sleep. Silva took the dream world very seriously, and he was interested in using dreams to solve problems. His programs teach us to first of all remember your dreams and suggests writing them down as soon as you wake up. We've covered dreams on this podcast with EPISODE #224[xiii] with Harvard Neuroscientist Dr. Baland Jalal on “Sleep Paralysis, Lucid Dreaming and Premonitions” or EPISODE #104[xiv] with Antonio Zadra and his book “When Brains Dream” and I even took a stab at explaining “Why Our Dreams Are So Weird, Highly Emotional and Often Forgotten” on EPISODE #226[xv] as I'm personally been interested in deciphering the messages that come through in our dream state. I mentioned on our recent episode with Dr. Hasan Ibne Akram about how motivational speaker Bob Proctor would encourage all of us to write down our dreams to see what we could learn from them. I've got quite the dream log that goes back to the late 90s, and while no one other than myself would understand the significance within my scribbles, they are very clear to me. Here's an example: I was planning to move from Toronto, Canada, to Arizona, USA in January 2000. I had applied to come to the USA on the H1BI VISA for the work I was doing with teenagers, and I didn't get the paperwork I needed until April 2001. You can see a dream I recorded Dec 14th, 2000 where I wrote “Bob at office putting in new computer telling me how I should set up my Phoenix office” that to someone else might be just a bunch of jumbled words, but to me, that was a clear sign that I was going to eventually finally make it to Arizona, with some suggestions on how to set up my office when I got there. I remember this dream clearly, with Bob actually hiding the wires behind my computer under my desk. With each log I've written, I can now go back over the dream in my head whenever I want, and the messages within each dream are obvious…at least to me. HOW TO USE YOUR DREAMS AS GUIDANCE: I've used this dream log to guide me in my personal and professional life and highly encourage anyone who wants to gain more self-awareness to try this activity. Silva began using dreams to solve his problems back in 1949 and said the more he studied, the more humbling it became as he realized he knew less and less as time moved forward. He was always looking to learn more to help others with his research. He writes an incredible story about how he dreamed of 3 numbers, and couldn't figure out what they were, until a string of events led him to a gas station, where someone he was with saw the numbers on a lottery ticket. He bought the ticket, and went on to win $10,000 that he used to fund his research over the years. This isn't the only story where dreams have had a significant importance. Richard Bach, the author of the book “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” an important book in the field of personal development, was almost never was written. Richard Bach explains that he couldn't figure out the ending to this story, until he saw the ending in a dream he had, helping him to finish the book. This book made the cover of Time Magazine, and Bach credits The Silva Method for the mental discipline and visualization he needed to complete this book. PUT THIS STRATEGY INTO PRACTICE: BEGIN BY WRITING DOWN YOUR DREAMS as soon as you wake up. I used to keep a notebook next to my bed, to do this, but now, with a phone nearby, I wake up and use the notepad on my phone. But what if you don't recall your dreams? Dreams are hard to remember, and Stephanie Gailing, the author of The Complete Book of Dreams says that “on average, within 5 minutes we forget 50% of what we dream and within 10 minutes, only 10% may remain”[xvi] and “there are certain neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) necessary to transform short-term memories into long-term ones; some of these including norepinephrine are at a very low level while dreaming, therefore create an innate blockade to having our nighttime visions etched in our mind.” TAKE THE DREAM WORLD SERIOUSLY: If you can be like Silva, and put value on your dreams, Gailing says “those who revere their dreams and accept them as an integral part of their life remember them more often.” I learned from Vishen Lakhiani, in the Silva Ultramind Online course that some indigenous cultures that he's come across in his studies, wake up and begin their day by discussing their dreams and what messages they can see from their dream state. I know we are far off from starting our corporate meetings this way, but if you can do this on your own, I do promise you will see things that will help you in your everyday life. MAKE SURE YOU ARE SLEEPING LONG ENOUGH: Gailing reported in her Complete Book of Dreams that “since dreams that arrive in the early morning are thought to be more vivid and complex” be sure you are sleeping long enough that you don't miss out on this last REM stage of sleep. How would you know WHEN your REM sleep is? You can use a sleep tracker to see. I put a screen shot of my REM SLEEP from last night that shows at what points in the night I was in REM. My report showed last night's REM sleep to be 21% higher than my 30 day average, but I unfortunately did not remember my dreams from last night. HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT YOU WILL REMEMBER YOUR DREAMS: The strategy of having the intention of remembering your dream works well, and also not worrying if you don't remember them every night. My dream log has weeks of gaps where I didn't remember anything at all, or it just wasn't something I thought was important to remember at the time. To bring this episode to a close, and REVIEW Chapter 6 on Speed Learning and Chapter 7 on Creative Dreams, In Chapter 6 on Speed Learning we looked at 2 Strategies that included Using the mental screen paired with the 3-finger technique if you want to learn something quickly, using the Alpha Brain State. Silva also covered recording your voice, or creating what I knew of as the “loop tape” of whatever it is that you want to remember. You would record what you want to remember in the BETA State, and then listen to it in the Alpha state (using the 3 finger technique or counting backwards). In Chapter 7 on Creative Dreams we covered 4 strategies for remembering our dreams, and taking them seriously like Jose Silva himself did. In the resource section, I've put the links to the three meditations I found online that can help you to take Silva's ideas to new heights in your own life. I hope that you take the time to go through the meditations where you will see what Hans Ajay told me. They are transformational. I wanted to learn something new with my current meditation practice, and had no idea just how deep Jose Silva's Program would take me. Next episode we will cover: Episode #164 ✔ Ch 8-Your Words Have Power ✔ Ch 9-The Power of Imagination ✔ Ch 10-Using Your Mind to Improve Your Health Will see you next episode. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Adriana Barragan grew her passion for life, beauty, science and freedom. During her childhood and teens, she was exposed to disciplined arts and sports that would let her develop her spirit and realize the power of the mind. Raised near the International Airport of Guadalajara, airplanes made her wonder. She had a revelation while learning basic aerodynamics on the internet. She was filled with pure passion and excitement. This was the most amazing applied physics she had ever read and represented the greatness of invention. Her learning and joy for flight only grew from that day. At age 15, Adriana confirmed her vocation for aviation while feeling reflected in the book “Running from Safety: an Adventure of the Spirit” by Richard Bach. Soon she realized that Flight Testing combined everything she loved, defining her pursuit to become an Experimental Test Pilot. After making her vocation public, her family could only show concern. Regardless, she took the steps to become proficient in English and applied to MIT, ERAU, and Wichita State University. After receiving letters of admission, she camped on her roof during a clear night where she made her affirmation. This journey promised her everything – adventure, growth, romance, achievement, freedom, joy – and so her family understood this “bug”. Six months before coming to the US, her family supported her to get a private pilot's license in Guadalajara. Later, she graduated with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Wichita State University in December of 2014. She worked as a research engineer at the Computational Mechanics Laboratory of the National Institute for Aviation Research for 3.5 years, 3 years as an Experimental Flight Test Engineer at Gulfstream Aerospace, and 2 years as a Maneuver Loads Engineer at Gulfstream Aerospace. Adriana has been flying since 2010, besides her Private Pilot Certificate, she paid for her Instrument rating, Commercial Pilot Certificate, Flight Instructor Certificate, Glider rating, and a bunch of aviation specialty courses including tailwheel, aerobatics, soaring events, and sea planes. After almost 10 years working as an engineer, Adriana “retired” the corporate world to start ORKA. She currently helps people obtain Private and Commercial Pilot Certificates, Tailwheel endorsements, and supports many students through her remote Online Course. Her vision is to lead those with a burning aviation desire to the finest flight instructors/coaches/teachers and aviation specialty courses. Because in her aviation journey, aiming for elite training and education, she found most training institutions were leaving gaps of knowledge and experience. ORKA will be the trusted platform to find effective, high quality training and vocation to teach. ORKA shall connect people, specially those new to aviation, to the richness of the aviation community. A network of humble, caring, available and talented individuals with deep knowledge and sharp skills. ORKA shall bring together educators, flyers, engineers, competition pilots, recreational pilots, etc, who have something to teach and want to teach. Like the flight test of an airplane, Adriana found developing skill and knowledge in a pilot benefits from the disciplined approach we use in Flight Test to expand the envelope. But this time, she was to dedicate her career to develop ”ability” to fly an aircraft to its full capabilities. Today I finish reading Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.
Today I continue reading Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.
Today I want to share with you a very special book. It's Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. It doesn't have anything to do with traditional meditation, per se. But it does have some profound lessons. I recorded it to be shared in the sleep section of Insight Timer. Hoepfully, if you save it for bedtime, it will help you sleep. Today I start by reading part one. Enjoy
I am super excited about this interview because I've become a huge fan of the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach and of Dr. Larry Arias. They're both THAT special. Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a bird that tries to perfect the art of flying. He may be a bird, but he's a badass, who's gonna-become-a-renegade bird. He has an unbounded passion for flight despite the rebuke of his clan or flock. He's bored with his life, disheartened by the passionless lives of those around him, and he's made an outcast because he can't conform. This book shares a profound truth about our existence. And I get to discuss this special book with Dr. Larry Arias. Larry is a pharmacist and would-be creative person who lives with his husband, dog, and two cats in magical Santa Cruz. His interests include discovering beauty and humor in unusual places, finding the perfect balance in things that are “weird” and “cool,” and rooting for the underdogs of society. He hopes to one day move from his professional career and pursue a path that allows him to amalgamate his interests into artwork that can be shared with the world.
This episode is a follow up to Latter-day Faith 137, “The Hero's Return,” which was released this past August. That episode featured a discussion between Stephen Carter and LDF host Dan Wotherspoon about an aspect of the Hero's Return model that is one of its lesser studied elements: the decision by the hero/heroine to return to their society of origin, bringing with them the insights and power they have gained from their journey. In this follow-up, Dan Wotherspoon adds a few additional insights about that pivotal decision that weren't explored in the first podcast. In order to help understand the cycle and the return better, Dan introduces and tells the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, penned by Richard Bach some fifty years ago. The fable is about a seagull who understands that there is more to a gull's life than being in the large flock that follows fishing boats and feeds on its scraps. Jonathan gains the sense that the key to unlocking a higher form of life is through flight for flight's sake, and through great effort, experimentation, risk, and practice he comes to new and rich understandings. After more and more training by other gulls on a similar journey, Jonathan differs from many of them by eventually choosing to return to the flock in order to serve other gulls who are interested in flight more than fighting for fish discarded by boats. Dan then focuses on the struggle to return, which most heroes only do reluctantly and that requires them facing different inner and outer obstacles. And if and when they do return, he introduces Joseph Campbell's notion of their ability to be a “master of both worlds.” There is much in this episode that relates closely to spiritual journeys in general, including Mormon ones.
