It is our true pleasure to welcome back James Sutter, co-creator of Pathfinder and Starfinder, musician, and accomplished full-time author. Much as with our initial interview thirty episodes ago, James once again engaged us in deep and humane conversation about complex topics. Of course, we did invite him to explore the potential of moral ambiguity in writing and character development. James also shared with us some details regarding his upcoming book, Darkhearts, now available for preorder! Please note there will be no new episode on 1/2/23. More importantly, please check out James' varied work: James L. Sutter James' Books on Amazon And All Their Silent Roars (a free story to read)) Darkhearts (his new book available for preorder!) James L. Sutter is a co-creator of the Pathfinder and Starfinder Roleplaying Games. From 2004 to 2017, he worked as an editor and developer for Paizo Publishing, starting on Dungeon Magazine, moving on to do foundational work for Pathfinder, and eventually becoming the Creative Director in charge of launching Starfinder, as well as the Executive Editor of the Pathfinder Tales novel line for Paizo and Tor/Macmillan. In 2017, he left Paizo to write full-time. Indeed, his latest novel, Darkhearts, a YA contemporary romance, is now available for preorder from Saint Martin's. It will be published on June 6, 2023. Welcome to Dice in Mind, a weekly podcast in which we explore the meaning of life through the lens of RPGs!  In each episode, we will consider everyday stuff like science, religion, philosophy, and economics…through the lens of a specific roleplaying game and its dice mechanic. In this interview at the very beginning of Gencon, when you could still find Starfinder for sale at their booth, James Sutter from Paizo answered some questions about how the rules in this new science fantasy role-playing game have been simplified to speed up play. He also explains how starships have been integrated into the game, the level of backwards compatibility designed into the system and some of the evolutionary developments that led from Pathfinder to Starfinder. Lastly, he also doesn't not announce something you might be able to look forward to in before too long by way of an iconic adventure path.

Three days late for the beginning of NaNoWriMo 2016, here's a bonus episode about maps. Because nothing says "keep writing" like "hey, let's draw a map now!" Dan and Howard were joined by Maurice Broaddus, Mur Lafferty, and James L. Sutter, who wanted to talk about maps. As Napoleon Bonaparte is rumored to have said prior to invading Russia, "geography is destiny." We talk port dwarves, rolling glaciers, star systems, and more. Liner links: Logarithmic star map Tolkien's map of Middle Earth Center-Pivot Irrigation (75 years old, not 50 as Howard said) Credits: This episode was mastered by Alex Jackson, and was made possible by the generous support of the GenCon Indy Writer's Symposium, and the Writing Excuses patrons at Patreon.

Gaming and Speculative Fiction are inextricably linked... whether the tales of Conan the Barbarian led you to explore Dungeons & Dragons, or playing Warhammer 40K led you to the marvelous Black Library, the culture of Speculative Fiction is deeply informed  by gaming in all it's many manifestations. But does gaming influence Science Fiction and Fantasy literature. Is the genre altered somehow by the pervasive sensibilities of gaming culture? And, if so, how? // Amazon.com Widgets The nuances of the relationship between gaming and fiction will take more than one RTP Dialog session to fully explore... but you gotta start somewhere, right? And for an expedition of this magnitude, you better load up the roster with some of the deeply informed and articulate storytellers. That's why I asked Shanna Germain, Michael R. Underwood, Andrea Phillips, and James Sutter to join me in the sumptuous RTP virtual studio to embark on an most intriguing journey into two worlds that are so very distinct yet hopelessly intertwined. Rocker. Author. Editor. Gamer. Co-creator of "Pathfinder", the biggest selling role-playing game in the world. Managing Editor at Paizo Publishing, the good people who MAKE Pathfinder (for those of the non-RPG persuasion). If there is anyone who has been a contributing factor to the recent (and long overdue) trend of geeks being cool, it's James Sutter. From his early days as a journalism student to his current standing as author of the much (and justifiably) lauded "Death's Heretic" and it's sequel, "The Redemption Engine", AND Managing Editor of Paizo's fiction line, James has been all about the story.
