An EU ETS that liner shipping can live with?

IT'S now been two years since the EU Emissions Trading System was extended to shipping. But it hasn't always been a happy relationship. Shipowners are not necessarily keen paying extra taxes, especially the green variety. Meanwhile operators in Asia are not fond of having to create accounts in EU countries to report and pay their emissions bills, without seeing any of the revenue. On the other side, greens don't like the ETS because the extra cost per tonne — about €70 to €80 ($81 to $93) over the past year — isn't enough to make switching to greener fuels worthwhile. Shipping's share of ETS credits is about sixty to eighty million a year – less than 10% of the market, so the price of those allowances is outside the industry's control. It's considered a good regulation for emissions on land, but a poor one for emissions at sea. But now, an opportunity for change is on the horizon. To find out what changes shipping wants, Lloyd's List senior reporter Declan Bush spoke to World Shipping Council vice president of environment and climate, Simon Bergulf.

When the luxury liner SS Morro Castle erupted in flames off the New Jersey coast in 1934, it left behind 137 dead, a captain's corpse that vanished before it could be examined, and a heroic radio operator whose criminal past suggested he may have started the fire himself. | #WDRadio June 14, 2026==========HOUR ONE: Jeannie Saffin already had a tough life, being born with a birth defect that stunted her mental growth, leaving her with the mind of a child, never getting married and having kids, never dating… but that all pales in comparison to how she died: bursting into flames for no apparent reason. Was Jeannie Saffin the victim of spontaneous human combustion? (The Spontaneous Combustion of Jeannie Saffin) *** Sometimes it's easy to get a girl to go out with you – just be polite and ask. Some men resort to cheesy pickup lines thinking it will help their chances. But one man chose to call upon a woman in a very unusual way… by purchasing a gravestone. (Pitching Woo With a Tombstone) *** If a man demands his girlfriend give up the baby they conceived, otherwise he would no longer be with the woman – what is that newborn's mother to do? Sadly, Emily Dunn made the wrong decision – with tragic results. (The Durbin Baby Murder) *** The transplanting of an organ is almost a routine procedure now in the 21st century – even doing a transplant of an arm or a leg isn't uncommon. But when you talk about transplanting a living head onto a dead body – that's when things get tricky. But Robert White thought it could be done – and even tried doing it. (The Man Who Wanted To Do a Head Transplant) *** Imagine getting onto a plane and once in the air finding out that the pilot wasn't qualified to fly that kind of plane – and that he was only there because the original pilot wasn't available due to being dead. That's what happened in 1934 on the boat, the SS Morro Castle. And it was the beginning of tragedy after tragedy. (Mystery, Mismanagement, and Mayhem on the SS Morro Castle)==========HOUR TWO: In June of 2009 a man calling himself Peter Bergmann checked in to a hotel in Sligo Town. Five days later his body was found on Rosses Point Beach. But Peter Bergmann was not Peter Bergmann – so who was he? (The Peter Bergmann Mystery) *** Sharing stories from people who are frightened by a bump in the night or a strange shadow on the wall in their bedroom is one thing, but when you get professional ghost hunters telling of the scariest experiences they've had, you know it has to be some freaky stuff. (Scariest Experiences of Ghost Hunters) ==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: More of the scariest experiences of ghost hunters! *** I'll tell you about that time when a dam failed – and because of it, people were legally allowed to marry the dead. And still do to this day. (That Time A Failed Dam Led to Marrying Corpses) *** Personal experiences of those who have stayed at the Wolf Creek Inn, plus some hard evidence, seems to indicate that spirits who haunt the place are not only benign in nature, but even protect the guests and owners from other malevolent spirits which roam there as well. Replacement captain William Warms steered into gale-force winds and waited 38 minutes to send a distress call, paint-gummed lifeboats refused to lower, untrained passengers broke their necks jumping in faulty life jackets, and at least 137 of the 549 aboard died before the charred hulk ran aground at Asbury Park, New Jersey, where souvenir stands sprang up around the wreck. Suspicion later fell on chief radio operator George White Rogers, the disaster's celebrated hero, whose hidden history of arson convictions, an aquarium-heater bomb built to maim a police lieutenant asking too many questions, and a double murder ended with his sudden death in Trenton State Prison — and the disappearance of his prison records. From there the episode lightens briefly with a pair of newspaper accounts of courtship by gravestone: an 1896 story from the Cincinnati Enquirer about a widower who finally bought a $50 monument for his wife of five years past — not out of grief, but to impress a wealthy widow who had called him too cheap to mark the grave — and a 1924 item from the Kansas City Star about a Kansas woman who married a widower precisely because he kept his first wife's grave so well.Next comes Dr. Robert J. White, the Cleveland neurosurgeon who watched the first successful human kidney transplant in Boston in 1954 and spent the rest of his life pursuing something far stranger: transplanting a living human head onto a donor body. In March 1970 he performed the operation on monkeys, moving one animal's head onto another's decapitated body in an 18-hour surgery; the hybrid lived nine days. White, a devout Catholic who sparred publicly with journalist Oriana Fallaci and animal rights activist Ingrid Newkirk, came close to attempting the procedure on a quadriplegic human volunteer through Russia's medical system before he died in 2010, leaving behind questions about consciousness, identity, and death that medicine has yet to answer. The hour then turns to Jeannie Saffin, a 61-year-old London woman with the mental capacity of a child who, on September 15, 1982, burst into flames while sitting calmly at her father's kitchen table in Edmonton with her hands in her lap. Her father Jack and brother-in-law Don Carroll doused the fire, but Jeannie — burned to the subcutaneous fat on her face, hands, and abdomen — never screamed, slipped into a coma, and died eight days later. The chair she sat in was unmarked, the nearest flame was a shielded pilot light five feet away, and a police constable concluded it was spontaneous human combustion, a verdict the coroner rejected. Skeptic Joe Nickell's pipe-ember theory accounts for some details, but not how a human body ignited so completely in under two minutes while burning nothing around it.Then the mystery of Peter Bergmann: the tall, gray-haired man with an Austrian accent who arrived in Sligo, Ireland by bus on June 12, 2009, checked into the Sligo City Hotel under a false name and a fabricated Vienna address, and over three days left the hotel thirteen times carrying a full purple plastic bag — returning empty-handed each time, never once caught by CCTV disposing of anything. He bought ten international stamps, cut the labels from his clothes, folded them neatly on a rock at Rosses Point Beach, and was found dead at the water's edge the next morning near Dead Man's Point. The autopsy revealed terminal prostate cancer he could not have been unaware of, yet he died of cardiac arrest, not dr

On today’s Q&A episode, Leigh and Kelly tackle a listener’s fear that her $18 vitamin C might just be expensive water. Is there a minimum you should spend on actives to know they're working, or are those $200 serums just better at marketing? Plus, Kelly reveals the top-rated recommendations for tight-lining that she found in the depths of the internet, while Leigh shares the $4.50 Priceline gem that actually stays put on your waterline. And in a classic "do as we say, not as we do" moment, the hosts share a cautionary PSA about why you should never, ever try a new makeup technique (looking at you, underpainting) when you have exactly 25 minutes to leave the house. In today's episode, we leave the dockyards and engine rooms behind to step aboard the ocean liner as it appears not at sea, but on the page. From the gilded salons of Edwardian fiction to the psychological depths of modernist prose, ocean liners have long served as floating stages for human drama, capturing the hopes, tensions, and contradictions of the modern age. We explore how writers such as E.M. Forster, Noël Coward, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, and Agatha Christie used these vast ships as microcosms of society—places where class, desire, ambition, and anxiety collided in close quarters. Christie's fascination with liners, in particular, reveals how perfectly they lent themselves to closed-circle mysteries: isolated worlds where familiar social types gather, secrets simmer, and violence quietly waits beneath the surface. The conversation ranges from glamour and luxury to migration and the uneasy faith in progress that defined the early twentieth century. Ocean liners emerge as symbols of empire and innovation, but also of displacement, vulnerability, and transition—spaces where identities could shift and certainties dissolve. To find out more Dr Sam Willis is joined by the brilliant Professor Faye Hammill, whose work illuminates why these ships so powerfully shaped literary imagination, and why they continue to haunt it today. The forgotten liner that outshone Titanic in real life. What if the most dramatic story of the Olympic-class liners isn't the one you've seen on film?In this fascinating episode of Review It Yourself, we uncover the extraordinary true story of RMS Olympic — the ship often overshadowed by her ill-fated sister, Titanic — but whose career was packed with mutiny, collisions, U-boats, innovation, and wartime heroics.Sean and maritime historian guest Mark Chirnside dive deep into the remarkable history behind his definitive book, RMS Olympic: Titanic's Sister. First published in 2004 and expanded in its 2015 second edition, this meticulously researched volume restores Olympic to her rightful place in maritime history.Far from being the “boring older sister,” Olympic earned the nickname “Old Reliable” for good reason. She survived a major collision with HMS Hawke, served with distinction during the First World War, transported thousands of troops, and even rammed and sank a German U-boat. While Titanic's story has dominated popular culture, Olympic's 24-year career tells a powerful story of resilience, adaptation, and maritime safety reform in the early 20th century. In this episode, we explore:Why Olympic has been historically overlookedThe myths and misconceptions surrounding the Olympic-class linersThe ship's vital wartime service and technical innovationsHow historical narratives are shaped — and sometimes distortedThe research process behind writing a definitive maritime historyMark shares insights into archival research, the challenges of correcting the historical record, and why Olympic deserves far greater recognition among historians and enthusiasts alike.About the GuestMark Chirnside is a respected maritime historian specialising in White Star Line and Cunard liners of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dakota Collins was born the son of professional hippies - his mom worked in medicine, and dad in education - with construction on the side - and Dakota was raised largely free-range in the hills southwest of Fort Collins.  He was born with a club-foot, which required repeated casting to straighten, and which eventually caused him to develop scoliosis.  And then he discovered slacklining!  In a matter of months his spine was straight and his life transformed, and he soon travelled the nation and the world as a professional slackliner, motivational speaker, and adventurist!  He later co-founded Breathe - a mindful community featuring yoga, extreme slacklining, meditation and more - and met his now wife at a Breathe festival - where they spent the full week together, and then she immediately joined the man she'd just met on a 30-day backpacking trip in Alaska.  I write all this to share the notion that when Dakota Collins does stuff - he does it all the way!  Dakota founded Grey Rock Landscape and Construction in the fall of 2020, and hired his teenage sister to mow lawns, and built the business to 4 full-time employees before he quit his full-time job with Larimer County.  Now 5 years in and 18 employees strong, Grey Rock has become one of the premier landscape design and installation companies in Northern Colorado.  And it's all about culture.  It seems everyone loves Dakota, and you will too - so please tune in and enjoy my conversation with Dakota Collins.  The LoCo Experience Podcast is sponsored by: Purpose Driven Wealth Thrivent: Learn more

The outlook for the global container rates isn’t encouraging for fleet owners, with supply expected to outpace demand next year. The Trump administration’s protectionist policies are only complicating matters for the industry. In this Talking Transports podcast, Peter Sand, Xeneta’s chief analyst, joins Lee Klaskow, Bloomberg Intelligence senior transportation and logistics analyst, to share his outlook for the liner market. The backdrop will weigh heavily on rates in 2026, with spot declines outpacing longer-term decreases. Though not Xeneta’s main scenario, a reopening of the Suez Canal would increase capacity by about 10-15%, putting additional pressure on rates. Sand also talks about USTR and China port fees, air-freight markets, emerging trade lanes and his love for death metal.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Because, I think we ended up right where we started, realizing that small stream fishing leads us into everything there is to love about fishing, and maybe helping to teach us some of the most important lessons of all.Wherever you are, wherever you fish, take some time to hike upstream into a narrow, shaded valley. You just might fall in love.My friend, Austin Dando, joins me for a great conversation.ResourcesREAD: Troutbitten | Favorite Small Stream Leader -- Formula, Reasons and StoriesVIDEO/ AUDIO: Riverside | Twelve Small Stream Casting TipsREAD: Troutbitten | Category | Small Stream FishingREAD: Troutbitten | Tag | Small Stream FishingREAD: Troutbitten | This Is the EndVIDEO: Troutbitten | Fish and Film - Mountain Water MemoriesARTICLE/VIDEO: Troutbitten | The River Doesn't Owe You AnythingVisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten FacebookThanks to TroutRoutes:Use the code TROUTBITTEN for 20% off your membership athttps://maps.troutroutes.com Thanks to SkwalaUse the code, TROUTBITTEN10 for 10% off your order athttps://skwalafishing.com/

We're here to break down small stream dry fly fishing. We're tackling dry flies first in this series, because fishing dries on small water puts you in a great position, with the necessary skills, to fish the other disciplines of nymphs, streamers and wets.In this episode, my friend, Austin Dando, and I walk through the gear, the approach, the casting, some philosophies and strategies for fishing dry flies on small streams. This topic is at the heart of the Blue Liner's Bible. The Blue Liner's Bible -- Finding the Right Water

Troutbitten

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2025 60:05

We're back with Season 16, with episode two of the Blue Liner's Bible. This one is all about finding the right water. We mean this in two different ways. First, you need to find a small stream that has public access (or you have private permission). But the stream also needs cold water and a good population of trout (hopefully they're wild trout). That's the first thing — find a good stream to fish. And honestly, that may not be as easy as it sounds. If you do start to explore new territory and get into the small stream game, you'll quickly understand what we mean, first hand, when we say that the exploration is part of the reward. The failure to find good water on one trip makes the next trip, where you find what becomes one of your favorite places in the world, even more specialSo we'll talk about that tonight — how to choose your next adventure. Identifying primary and secondary water, and kind of how to balance that risk vs reward.Meaning, you could fish the small stream that everyone talks about in Montana or Pennsylvania, because you can be sure that trout are present in good numbers. But would you rather take the chance on the stream that no one mentions? It has all the variables you're looking for in your research, and because it has no name, you can be sure no one else will be thereUnderstanding those variables and knowing good sources for research is part of our topic here tonight. And then, the other part of finding good water is from an on-stream perspective. Once you're there, what section should you choose? And even within that section, what water types should you target the most? Do you expect trout in the deep pools or the riffles, in the fast water, or the slow, shady, deep undercuts?A lot goes into these choices as well. Much of it is seasonal. Some of it is about matching your tactics and your fly choices, and another part is just experience and instinct. Again, all of this stuff is why we love small stream fishing.None of it is laid out for you. A good fly shop will not lead you to these places. And even a good friend, with the best intentions, may not have even half the intel that you really need for a good day of small stream fishing. Like we said last time, the small stream game is do-it-yourself in nature. So, that's what we have lined up. My friend, Austin Dando, joins me for a good look at finding the right small stream water.ResourcesREAD: Troutbitten | Category | Small Stream FishingREAD: Troutbitten |  Tag | Small Stream FishingPODCAST: Troutbitten | What to Love About Small Stream Fishing - S7,Ep6VIDEO: Troutbitten | Home WatersVisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten FacebookThanks to TroutRoutes:Use the code TROUTBITTEN for 20% off your membership athttps://maps.troutroutes.com Thanks to SkwalaUse the code, TROUTBITTEN10 for 10% off your order athttps://skwalafishing.com/

With cold flows and eager trout, mountain water and small stream fishing can provide the perfect setup, the perfect escape, if you're willing to put in the effort. There are some truly wonderful things about small stream fishing, and learning to work these waters teaches us everything we need to know about fishing any trout water. But the challenges can turn many people off as well.Small stream fishing can be tough. In truth, you cannot fish the same way as you fish an average river. You cannot use the same gear, the same approach or the same mindset and expect to have the same success. Things are different on small waters. So begins the Troutbitten Blue Liner's Bible series. We've had this idea in the works for many years. I've created the rough outline in book form, but let's kick off the Blue Liner's Bible with this podcast skills series. In this first episode, Austin Dando and work through the advantages and disadvantages, the good and the bad, with an honest look at what you can expect from small stream fishing — the challenges and the rewards. Last year, 9,000 deceased donor kidneys were discarded due to storage and time limitations. A kidney “life support” machine could change that. Also, the SS United States will join Florida's 4,300 artificial reefs—human-made places for fish and other marine life to live. How do these reefs work? The Effort To Save Thousands Of Donor Kidneys From Being WastedSylvia Miles was diagnosed with lupus in 2006, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the body's immune system to attack healthy tissue—including her kidneys.Miles, who lives in Indianapolis, was later diagnosed with advanced kidney disease, and was in need of a kidney transplant.Kidney diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the United States with 37 million people living with chronic kidney disease. Together with advanced kidney disease—the later stage of CKD—it cost Medicare billions of dollars in recent years.People like Miles, who need a kidney transplant, wait an average of five years—often on dialysis. But despite the long waitlists and organ shortages, around 9,000 kidneys from deceased donors last year were discarded due to perceived issues with their viability. A new Indiana-based organization, 34 Lives, is working to limit that waste and rehabilitate the organs.Read the rest of this article on sciencefriday.com.Ocean Liner SS United States Will Become An Artificial ReefThis week, after a notable career, the SS United States, a 1950s ocean liner, took her sunset cruise. Like many retirees, the ship is heading south—from Philadelphia to Florida—where she'll be reinventing herself. In this next chapter, the SS United States will have new passengers: fish and other marine creatures. The ship will be sunk to the bottom of the sea and turned into an artificial reef, joining more than 4,300 artificial reefs off the coast of Florida.Other sunken ships have become artificial reefs in the past, which have helped boost marine life as well as scuba diving and fishing tourism. Host Flora Lichtman speaks with Scott Jackson, a regional specialized agent with the Florida Sea Grant and University of Florida IFAS extension, about the science behind artificial reefs, and what has been learned from decades of research.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
