Today's episode is a candid conversation at the Water Garden Expo between Eric Triplett and Jim Nicholson from BTL Liners. Eric explores his misconceptions about BTL, initially associating them only with large-scale liner projects. Jim clarifies that while BTL is known for its large custom fabrications using reinforced polyethylene, they also cater to smaller applications and offer other liner types like EPDM. The discussion covers BTL's history, product variety including drop-in liners, installation techniques, puncture resistance comparisons between different materials, common contractor mistakes in measuring liners, and the company's focus on customer service and technical support. BTL Liners: https://www.btlliners.com/   Key Takeaways:   Explore beyond initial assumptions and investigate the full range of solutions a provider offers. Prioritize material characteristics like puncture resistance over thickness alone when selecting liners. Always double-check critical measurements with reliable tools to avoid costly errors. Consider innovative and durable materials like reinforced polyethylene for diverse project needs. Last year, 9,000 deceased donor kidneys were discarded due to storage and time limitations. A kidney “life support” machine could change that. Also, the SS United States will join Florida's 4,300 artificial reefs—human-made places for fish and other marine life to live. How do these reefs work? The Effort To Save Thousands Of Donor Kidneys From Being WastedSylvia Miles was diagnosed with lupus in 2006, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the body's immune system to attack healthy tissue—including her kidneys.Miles, who lives in Indianapolis, was later diagnosed with advanced kidney disease, and was in need of a kidney transplant.Kidney diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the United States with 37 million people living with chronic kidney disease. Together with advanced kidney disease—the later stage of CKD—it cost Medicare billions of dollars in recent years.People like Miles, who need a kidney transplant, wait an average of five years—often on dialysis. But despite the long waitlists and organ shortages, around 9,000 kidneys from deceased donors last year were discarded due to perceived issues with their viability. A new Indiana-based organization, 34 Lives, is working to limit that waste and rehabilitate the organs.Read the rest of this article on sciencefriday.com.Ocean Liner SS United States Will Become An Artificial ReefThis week, after a notable career, the SS United States, a 1950s ocean liner, took her sunset cruise. Like many retirees, the ship is heading south—from Philadelphia to Florida—where she'll be reinventing herself. In this next chapter, the SS United States will have new passengers: fish and other marine creatures. The ship will be sunk to the bottom of the sea and turned into an artificial reef, joining more than 4,300 artificial reefs off the coast of Florida.Other sunken ships have become artificial reefs in the past, which have helped boost marine life as well as scuba diving and fishing tourism. Host Flora Lichtman speaks with Scott Jackson, a regional specialized agent with the Florida Sea Grant and University of Florida IFAS extension, about the science behind artificial reefs, and what has been learned from decades of research.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.   Another stellar guest mix comes our way courtesy of loyal listener, Erwin Broers. He asked if I was interested in a mix of  electronic music from Innovative Communication, the label founded by Klaus Schulze in the late 70s. Yes, please! Here's what Erwin says about this fantastic mix: "I was in my teens when I got in touch with Electronic Music by means of well-known artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk and Vangelis. Searching for more similar music in the local library, I came across an LP with on its sleeve just a mysterious picture of a huge radio telescope. The album was Robert Schroeder's "Galaxie Cygnus-A" ! Liner notes on the back of the sleeve explained that the music was commissioned by the Austrian Broadcasting Service (ÖRF) and performed live at the 1982 ARS Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. The idea behind the project consisted of capturing sound waves coming from the Cygnus-A galaxy with the help of the Effelsberg 100 meter radio telescope, the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world at that time. Schroeder used those sound waves as basis and inspiration, and created a magical soundtrack for stargazing and floating in outer space. Needless to say, I was blown away by this album, and from then on I fanatically sought out other releases on the Innovative Communication label, which - by the way - was founded in 1978 by the late Klaus Schulze, one of the godfathers of Electronic Music. To honour my memory of that exciting period, I chose to start this label retrospective with the first two tracks of this special album - including some of the white noise straight from space ! The mix is rather heterogeneous and gives a good impression of the kind of EM that was published on IC in its heydays, ie. the 80s. From the early 90s the label quickly became more commercial edging towards mellow new age and average electro-acoustic instrumental fusion (aka NAM)." Thanks, Erwin, for this trip back in time. Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Robert Schroeder - Galaxie Cygnus-A Part 1 & 2 (Galaxie Cygnus-A, 1982) 12:18    Klaus Schulze - Silent Running (excerpt) (Trancefer, 1981) 20:36    Peak - Nightmist (Ebondàzzar, 1982) 26:52    P'Cock - The Prophet (The Prophet, 1980) 32:45    Peter Seiler - Serengeti (Sensitive Touch, 1987) 37:51    Mind Over Matter - Paradise: 1st. Chemical Damage or Floating Liner? The Real Story

Send us a Text Message.Welcome to another episode of the Talking Pools Podcast! I'm your host, Dan Lenz, and today we dive deep into a critical issue facing our industry: the state of education and the accuracy of information circulating within the pool community. In recent years, we've seen a surge of self-proclaimed experts on social media platforms. While many have good intentions, the reality is that misinformation is rampant. This poses a significant challenge for pool owners and professionals alike who rely on these sources for guidance and solutions.I want to address a concerning trend I've noticed. Often, those in need of help are presented with incorrect diagnoses and misleading advice, which can lead to further complications and expenses. It's more important than ever to vet the information you receive for accuracy. To illustrate this point, let me share a recent conversation I had. A pool owner was experiencing issues with liner wrinkles. The advice they received online was that they were dealing with a floating liner. However, upon closer inspection, it became evident that the real culprit was chemical damage. This misdiagnosis could have led to unnecessary and costly repairs, not to mention prolonged frustration for the owner. It's cases like these that highlight the need for proper education and the dissemination of accurate information within our industry. In today's episode, we'll explore how we can improve the quality of education, identify reliable sources, and ensure that the advice we follow is both accurate and effective. Let's get started!
