Review of Samuel T. Wilkinson, Purpose: What Evolution and Human Nature Imply About the Meaning of Our Existence (New York: Pegasus Books, 2024). 338 pages. $29.95 (hardback). Abstract: Many believers in God are troubled by assertions that the theory of evolution means life on earth is accidental and has no purpose. Additionally, some people worry that the theory's implied selfishness and “survival of the fittest” mantra have terrible implications for human society. Samuel T. Wilkinson's book Purpose is a thoughtful addition to the literature corroborating compatibility between creation by God and the theory of evolution. Evolution has a random component, but the critical selection step is non-random. Moreover, the process is iterative. As evidence for non-randomness, Wilkinson cites convergent evolution (where similar traits emerged in divergent organisms). Numerous examples suggest that natural selection has limited choices, not infinite or random possibilities as was once thought. Wilkinson discusses how human behavior and evolution imply that life has purpose. These purposes are compatible with teachings embraced by diverse believers in God. Behavioral studies strongly suggest human beings evolved to have both good and evil natures and to have ultimate happiness in loving family relationships. Such relationships build good lives and societies. Facilitating all of this, natural selection appears to occur at individual, kin, and group levels. When combined with the observation that we can freely choose, our dual nature suggests that this life is a test. For Wilkinson and others, harmony between faith in God and evolutionary theory came through epiphanies and by reasoning. These experiences increased their faith in God. Amid difficulties, persisting with faith is rewarded. The post Epiphanies and Reasonings: Compatibility between Evolutionary Biology and Divine Creation first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.

The word "epiphany" has at least two words, also appearing in Scripture, with related meanings: "advent" and "apocalypse." In this sermon, Pastor Chris led the congregation in a look at those terms and how they might found in three Bible passages-- two in John's Gospel and one in Acts. So many times with Jesus, who is the ultimate epiphany of all, we can see all three things at work at the same time. How might that be? Join us and find out! The painting associated with this sermon/podcast is "The Baptism of the Christ II" by Daniel Bonnell, a favorite artist of our church family.

Rev. Robert Brown was in the Chapter House to discuss epiphanies, an especially appropriate topic in this present Season of Epiphany. He and Pastor Chris took a look at three passages of Scripture, two in John's Gospel and one in Acts, to examine some important Epiphany themes. Along the way they also teased out aspects of Apocalypsis and Advent also present in the passages. What do you think those three terms might have in common (Epiphany, Apocalypsis, and Advent)? Jump in and join us! It was a delightful conversation. In this episode, Christian Keller joins Henrik and Jeremy to explain how world models are shaping the next stage of generative AI. He talks through how AI learns using different types of inputs, and why video adds a sense of continuity, change, and cause and effect that text alone does not provide. Christian shares vivid analogies and clear examples to show what multimodal models make possible. The conversation moves into how AI is now used throughout the research process, from generating synthetic data to evaluating model outputs. Christian shares how this loop is already in motion and how AI is helping scale and accelerate experimentation. He also reflects on the shift after ChatGPT launched, and how that changed the pace and structure of research work.Later in the episode, Christian describes how individual workflows are evolving, and how asking simple questions like “Could AI help with this?” often opens new possibilities. He shares examples from his own work and home life, including how his wife built and graded her own French exercises using generative tools.Key Takeaways:Text removes essential informationChristian explains that text compresses reality and loses detail, context and temporality. This week's episode is all about doing the damn thing. Inspired by Jen Sincero's You Are a Badass, we explore how to move from wishful thinking into real, consistent action. Because let's face it: Epiphanies are useless without execution. Self-help without follow-through is shelf-help. Trying to be an actor isn't the same as being one. From Passive Habits to Active Action Many actors fall into the trap of passive self-help habits. That looks like reading books, journaling, or attending seminars but never actually taking the uncomfortable, messy steps that move your career forward. Here's the three-part shift: Awareness – Notice your thoughts, excuses, and passive habits. Acceptance – Own them without judgment. Action – Act your way into right thinking and build your courage muscle. Every day, ask yourself: Am I going to the gym… or am I really going to the gym? Be in the 5% Here's a sobering stat: only 5% of SAG-AFTRA members qualify for health insurance. And of all the people who take courses (in any field), only 5% ever implement what they learn. We want you in that 5%. The ones who suit up, show up, and keep going. The ones who build resilience, embrace discomfort, and grow stronger by being brave. Stop Waiting. Start Acting. Waiting is the perfect recipe for self-sabotage. If you want a career, start now. Start messy. Start imperfect. But start. At Acting Business Boot Camp, that's why we've built: The Weekly Accountability Group – so you don't just learn, you follow through. Monthly Classes with Mandy – so you keep sharpening your tools and confidence. The Weekly Adjustment Group – to help you build bravery into your daily life. Because knowledge without action won't book you jobs. Action will. Episode Takeaways Epiphanies without execution don't create change. Awareness + Acceptance + Action = Transformation. Success is about getting comfortable being uncomfortable. Build your courage muscle daily. Don't “try” to be an actor. Be an actor. Resources and Links Book mentioned: You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero  Join us in the Weekly Accountability Group  or the Weekly Adjustment Group  to put this into practice. What if your rock bottom was actually a launchpad? Melissa Monte, host of the Mind Love podcast, shares how hitting her lowest point became the catalyst for building a life she truly loves. Melissa's journey wasn't a straight line to success. After facing trauma, bad relationships, and even a felony charge for someone else's crime, she found herself in a jail cell with a choice: let her limitations define her or use them as guideposts. She chose the latter, teaching herself digital marketing and eventually launching a successful podcast. This episode dives into the raw, messy process of self-discovery and how our biggest failures can become our greatest teachers. Ask yourself what you can do without anyone else's permission. Use your limitations as guideposts to steer you in a new direction. So here we are coming up on our 5th year of doing this podcast and we are still learning! This has been an amazing process and one of the most amazing things that we have learned is that for survivors of abuse the process doesn't end - but it can get better and easier. That doesn't mean that is always better or easy, but that as we learn more about ourselves and about our issues than we can have epiphanies that are exciting and transformational. These epiphanies come from self awareness and if there is one thing that we care about it is awareness, being aware of your issues, being aware of the lies that you were taught about yourself as a survivor, being aware that you are not alone and that you don't have to face your struggles by yourself.

A new approach to the theism-scientism divide rooted in a deeper form of atheism.Western philosophy is stuck in an irresolvable conflict between two approaches to the spiritual malaise of our times: either we need more God (the “turn to religion”) or less religion (the New Atheism). In Experiments in Mystical Atheism: Godless Epiphanies from Daoism to Spinoza and Beyond, (University of Chicago Press, 2024) Brook Ziporyn proposes an alternative that avoids both totalizing theomania and atomizing reductionism. What we need, he argues, is a deeper, more thoroughgoing, even religious rejection of God: an affirmative atheism without either a creator to provide meaning or finite creatures in need of it—a mystical atheism. In the legacies of Daoism and Buddhism as well as Spinoza, Nietzsche, and Bataille, Ziporyn discovers a critique of theism that develops into a new, positive sensibility—at once deeply atheist and richly religious. Experiments in Mystical Atheism argues that these “godless epiphanies” hold the key to renewing philosophy today. You can download the supplementary materials here.
