Hang onto your slipcases, because Blake Howard and the legendary @RufusTSuperfly aka Tom Reagan's Hat discuss the swashbuckling delights in the choreography and sound design of Criterion's new release, The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester. The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard LesterAlexandre Dumas's immortal tale of adventure and camaraderie received perhaps the finest of its numerous screen adaptations with this two-part swashbuckling spectacular from A Hard Day's Night director Richard Lester. Featuring Michael York, Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay, and Richard Chamberlain as the swaggering swordsmen, who thrust and parry their way through courtly intrigue in seventeenth-century France, The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers are also graced with an all-star supporting cast that includes Raquel Welch, Faye Dunaway, Geraldine Chaplin, and Charlton Heston. Lester's exuberant epic breathes new life into an oft-told classic through its boisterous slapstick invention, its meticulous attention to period detail, and a sense of pure, unbridled bravado that is thrilling to behold.Richard Lester's spirited adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's timeless novel immediately distinguished itself from previous film versions with its irresistible lightheartedness. It follows the brash, young wannabe musketeer d'Artagnan (Michael York) as he travels from the French countryside to Paris and befriends Athos (Oliver Reed), Porthos (Frank Finlay), and Aramis (Richard Chamberlain), famed swordsmen whom he must help to stop the conniving Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston) and his plot to undermine the king. The Three Musketeers sweeps viewers away with its exquisite sets and costumes, chivalric romance, and breathless duels punctuated by the ingenious physical comedy that was Lester's trademark. It may be “all for one and one for all,” but it took director Richard Lester two films to contain the sweeping spectacle of Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling adventure. This sequel—shot simultaneously with The Three Musketeers, since they were originally conceived as a single film—dials down the comic high jinks that distinguished the first installment in favor of a more somber tone, as our heroes are drawn into a deadly revenge plot orchestrated by the seductive Milady de Winter (a deliciously wicked Faye Dunaway). Upping the psychological stakes and deepening our sense of the characters, The Four Musketeers brings this beloved tale of honor and friendship to a close with a rousing emotional flourish.SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restorations, with uncompressed monaural soundtracksIn the 4K UHD edition: Two 4K UHD discs of the films presented in Dolby Vision HDR and two Blu-rays with the films and special featuresTwo for One, a new documentary by critic David CairnsThe Saga of the Musketeers (2002), a two-part documentary featuring interviews with cast and crew membersThe Making of “The Three Musketeers,” a 1973 featurette with behind-the-scenes footage of director Richard LesterTrailersEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by film critic Stephanie ZacharekNew illustration by Mattias AdolfssonThe legendary @RufusTSuperfly aka Tom Reagan's Hat can be found here.Support: JOIN THE ONE HEAT MINUTE PATREON FOR AS LITTLE AS $1 A MONTHFollow the hosts:Blake Howard - Twitter & One Heat Minute Website Alexei Toliopoulos - Twitter & The Last Video StoreSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Hang onto your slipcases because Blake Howard & Isaac Feldberg will discuss the canonisation of Sean Baker with the special CRITERION COLLECTION releases of ANORA and PRINCE OF THE CITY.AnoraContemporary cinema's foremost chronicler of American dreamers and schemers hustling on the margins of capitalist promise, Sean Baker, reaches new heights of mastery with this audacious anti–Cinderella story—a whirlwind neorealist screwball comedy with an aching heart. In an electric, star-is-born performance, Mikey Madison soars as Anora, an enterprising, ferociously foulmouthed Brooklyn erotic dancer and sex worker whose Prince Not-So-Charming comes along in the form of a Russian oligarch's wild-child son (Mark Eydelshteyn). This is the beginning of a fractured fairy tale—also featuring standout performances from Karren Karagulian, Yura Borisov, and Vache Tovmasyan—that turns the cruel realities of class inside out. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Anora confirms Baker as one of our preeminent auteurs.DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital master, supervised by director Sean Baker and producer Alex Coco, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and two Blu-rays with the film and special featuresTwo audio commentaries: one featuring Baker, Coco, producer Samantha Quan, and cinematographer Drew Daniels, and the other featuring Baker and actors Yura Borisov, Mark Eydelshteyn, Karren Karagulian, Mikey Madison, and Vache TovmasyanNew making-of documentaryNew interviews with Baker and MadisonCannes Film Festival press conferenceQ&A with Madison and actor-stripper Lindsey NormingtonDeleted scenesAudition footageTrailersEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and English descriptive audioPLUS: Essays by film critic Dennis Lim and author Kier-La JanisseNew cover by Bianca Parkes and GrandSon, with photography by Max AbadianPrince of BroadwayA raw, disarmingly moving slice of neorealism, this early-career triumph from DIY auteur Sean Baker plunges into the world of West African immigrant Lucky (Prince Adu) and his Armenian Lebanese boss Levon (Karren Karagulian), two unlikely friends who peddle knockoff designer goods in Manhattan's wholesale district. When a long-forgotten ex forces him to take care of a young son he didn't even know he had, Lucky must figure out how to become a father without losing his edge in the counterfeit-merch game. Hello New Hollywood hippies and malaise monkeys and all the ships at sea and welcome to A Very Good Year. If you've been listening you know we're retiring A Very Good Year and coming back with a whole new show for 2025.In the meantime we're looking back at the past 100 episodes by revisiting some of our favorite guests and our favorite movies by decade. Be thankful we did your Gladiator II homework, rewatching Ridley Scott's Gladiator 1 (2000) with amateur Russell Crowe historian Blake Howard. This is a Gladiator II-spoiler-free conversation: listen as we get into Crowe kissing disembodied feet, Scott's world-building, the technology of acting, Oliver Reed's digitized face (RIP), is anything better than practical effects, expressionism vs. historical accuracy, and more. Gladiator: a good movie. Further reading: here's Gladiator cinematographer John Mathieson on returning to the sequel after 24 years. We don't cover TV very often on Watch With Jen so you know that when my guests & I dedicate an entire episode to a television series, it's something we wholeheartedly recommend you seek out. (In fact, THE AMERICANS, COLUMBO, TERRIERS, HALT & CATCH FIRE, MR. INBETWEEN, & SUCCESSION are among the few exceptions to this film-centric show in over 200 podcast installments.)As the opposite of a true crime buff who usually avoids serial killer stories in entertainment (except ZODIAC), this season, my good buddies, actor-producer Rob Belushi & the prolific podcaster Blake Howard challenged me to watch & discuss Netflix's critically lauded series MINDHUNTER, produced by David Fincher. Although I warned them at the beginning of the experiment that if I started having nightmares, they'd get a phone call no matter what time it was, I soon found myself fully hooked on the marvelous series about the start of the FBI criminal profiling unit, starring Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, & Anna Torv.Coming together to hash everything out in this surprisingly rollicking, enlightening, & story-filled analytical chat, we investigate MINDHUNTER, bond over our affection for McCallany as Bill Tench (as well as the rest of the amazing cast), enjoy Rob's impressions, share some experiences from my life that scare the boys, & more. While unfortunately, we can't deliver the third season of the show so many of you want, we hope you'll consider this appreciation of MINDHUNTER the next best thing to tide you over.Originally Posted on Patreon (10/14/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/114006176Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveShop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi
Welcome to the second physical media episode of season five. Inundated by first-rate releases on disc over the last several months, this casual installment primarily consists of my takes on the stack of films you see in the cover photo, but I wanted to break up the rhythm of this one by inviting friends like Sean Burns & Blake Howard to help me cover a trio of titles as well. Additionally, Sean & Blake dive into a few bonus releases they've picked up or worked on (not included in the list below) that you might want to check out.Films Covered: DOGFIGHT, GIRLFIGHT, BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (with Sean Burns), PERFECT DAYS (with Sean Burns), THE LINGUINI INCIDENT, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, ENNIO, EL MARIACHI, DESPERADO, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY, & COLLATERAL (with Blake Howard).Guests: Sean Burns is a Boston-based film critic for WBUR. Why is drag being mainstreamed? To find the answer, we tell the story of Blake Howard – author of From Mascara to Manhood. Blake is a former drag queen that gives a unique insight into the twisted phenomenon sweeping the nation. The mainstream media loves a gender transition story - but they'll never air Blake's transformation…because it brings to the surface perhaps one of the most-taboo subjects in modern American culture. After Glassdoor's acquisition of Fishbowl in 2023, they enlisted the help of Deanna German, Creative Director at Koto, and her team to reposition them as more than just a workplace insight platform, but a place for community conversation. The catch: Glassdoor requested an open design process, meaning Koto would share design concepts with the public early and often.
